My wife picked this place for dessert/ice cream after a Father's Day meal with one of my daughters and son-in-law. Had not been in a long time. My initial impression was not good. Parking was a chore as I missed that you could park in the back as well as up front, and there was only one person working the counter, so the line was longer than it should've been. So, first impressions can be misleading, as I was able to park in front of the storefront and another person joined the soul Employee 2/3 of the way through the line. But, it was absolutely worth the wait! Truly, the best ice cream I have eaten in a long time. I had the coffee flavor and a coconut offering. They have fancy names with unusual ingredients for the most part so I can't tell you what went with the coffee or the coconut. All four of us really enjoyed our ice cream and talked about how over-the-top excellent/tasty it was. Portion size was good. We each had two scoops. I think I'm a special case here bc I got the ice cream for free, and who doesn't want free ice cream?! For the price I didn't pay, the experience was worth it! I got the Back Porch Iced Tea, Rumchata (seasonal flavor), and Bourbon Pecan Blondie (seasonal flavor). I enjoyed the Bourbon Pecan Blondie the most of the three! Back Porch Iced Tea sort of tastes kind boba, Rumchata has a coconut and slight alcohol taste to it, and Bourbon Pecan Blondie has a strong pecan flavor to it (obviously). The workers were very nice, and it's a bit small inside with limited seating, but it's nice and clean. Lick was celebrating its 13th anniversary which is why I got the ice cream free if you wanted to know! It is pretty pricey ice cream though. read more

Lick Ice Cream is tucked away between Bufulina Due and Finley Barbershop, all of which are next to Barley Swine on Burnet Road. Finley and Lick share parking spots. In the back, there appears to also be extra parking. If you enter in the late afternoon on a sunny day, expect sunlight to stream directly through the windows. There are two freezers where all their available flavors are presented to you. You won't find any run of the mill flavors here. Instead, the flavor creations here are more interesting. A strong point here is that their ice cream is not overly sweetened; you taste the goat cheese, the herbs, or the fruits used. We opted to order a small (up to 2 flavors) with Grapefruit Paloma and Goat Cheese, Thyme, & Honey. Surprisingly, they paired together quite well. However, where was interesting was that even though the flavors came through without being excessively sweet, both flavors still tasted very similar. We were able to determine that the Grapefruit one was on the bottom and the Goat Cheese one was the top scoop. Together, they were quite refreshing. Besides, who doesn't like goat cheese and grapefruit? Service-wise, they do offer samples if you'd like to try any flavors. And is a tiny seating area inside. I would definitely come back here are try more flavors. I'd describe the ice cream as being on the lighter side--they must use both milk and cream, rather than cream alone. So as a base, it's lighter (in fat) than what you'd get from Cayuga Lake Creamery up in Interlaken, NY, but it's able to still carry a good amount of flavor, although lighter. I would still say Cayuga Lake Creamery's ice cream packs a more powerful punch of flavor. read more

We were in Austin for the weekend and after dinner, the kids wanted some ice cream so we found this place. I've been to various Lick locations but I've never been to this one and I've never taken my youngest child with me when I went. He has multiple food allergies to wheat, eggs, avocado, peanuts, tree nuts, pineapples, and kiwi. My quick search through their website lists simple ingredients so we decided on Lick since it had potential. First off, we went at night and it was DARK. We missed it the first time and had to do an awkward u-turn to go back. I don't know if the small center doesn't have parking lot/building lights or they were broken the night we went, but the place was hidden. I thankfully spotted the black LICK on the building against the shadowed background as we passed. It is a smaller center with other eateries and what looked like a barber shop. I saw a sign saying there was additional parking in the back but I didn't see an entrance because I simply didn't see much when I was there, haha. Perhaps in the daytime, then. However, because of that, we literally got the last free parking spot in the front and those spaces are small. It could be a struggle if you go when it's busy! (We were there at around 9 pm so I was surprised.) Inside was small and cozy with a few seats, but not much. The decor looked like every other Licks I've been to, but I admit I completely walked past the wall of flavors without seeing it (there was a theme that night) and I only saw it once I sat down with our ice cream. Just to let you know: they're right across the counter with the ice cream. The good news is if you have the food allergies I mentioned, you can eat here. My kid could choose about half of the flavors (and pretty much all the basic flavors), but with him being 3 years old, he stuck with his trusty chocolate. This time: milk chocolate. He managed to eat half! My daughter got the fresh mint and chocolate chunk and she finished it all! I was amazed. My husband and I shared a medium and he got coffee and cream whilst I got roasted beets and fresh mint. Yum! A perfect treat to end the day. I love how Lick uses as many local ingredients as they can and the flavors are always fun and delicious. They also have a few vegan options (they're coconut based) and seasonal flavors. When I went, they had fall inspired flavors and I tried Hazel's pumpkin pie that I did try and enjoy because I love pumpkin pie, but I really felt like it was missing flaky pie crust in there, so I opted out. When we left, the shop was full, so looks like they're doing well on a Sunday night! The staff were helpful and thought it might seem slow (there were two people behind the counter and they both work with whoever's next... each person did not take on their own customer), it is fast when you're up there. I remember speaking to one and asked to test flavors and I'd get a test spoon within a second because the other person would get it. I did not expect that, haha. I think of all the gourmet ice cream shops in the area their line-up is the most limited and basic. There's about 15 flavors and I'll be honest, some of them just straight up don't appeal to me. However, there's usually there are a few flavors that seem interesting enough to sample and two flavors that I enjoy enough that I'll go with dual flavor combo. I also get the waffle cone as well just to keep it more interesting. I will say that the folks who work at this particular location have always been nice and friendly. It doesn't matter if there's no one else there or the line is at the door. Always a great spot for some ice cream. They change some of their favorites every few months so check out their website for their flavors. The parking lot is small here but there is a parking garage next door where you can park on the first floor and walk over. Service is pretty quick. I was able to sample a couple different flavors and thought most of them (dark chocolate and olive oil, goat cheese, spicy peanut butter, date cake) were not good flavor and some of them were very icy and had poor texture. I love fun interesting flavors but I don't think their execution was done very well. We did come in 30m before closing, but they had already wiped down and put all of their chairs in the corner, so we had to stand. I get that it's very close to closing, but for an ice cream shop where you're probably in there eating your ice cream for 10 minutes, I wish they hadn't put away their chairs a good half hour before closing. Also, solicitors from a church came in and tried to sell us digital painting as well, which was just a bad experience and should not be allowed. read more

They sound different than your typical ice cream flavors, but sample them all because they will taste surprisingly delicious! It can be pricey, but for the level of flavors you get and the perfect consistency of the ice cream, it is definitely worth a try. Finally took the opportunity to stop in and try this place as I've heard such rave reviews and honestly...I just don't see it. The ice cream was decent enough and it definitely has an Austin vibe with some very original flavors, but nothing really blew me away. I tried several samples before deciding on the Caramel Corn, which was subtle and sweet, but not overly flavored and I believe that was my biggest dissatisfaction with Lick. Everything had a very mild flavor and was mediocrely tasty, but not actually delicious. Maybe it was just the flavors I tried, but I did sample around 5-6 flavors before just deciding to go with the best of everything that I tried.
