Dehydrated and desperately needing something sweet we dropped by Jim Jim's to see what the high reviews were all about. Located on 6th Street, Jim Jim's is surprisingly accessible with parking spots available out front and just around the corner. It's not a sitdown place so keep that in mind for your stop, but the line does move fast and they are very efficient. There's a good variety of flavors and things they serve from italian ice to ice cream and shakes. We opted for a strawberry italian ice with condensed milk on top. From the first bite we were in heaven. The flavor is very thorough which is not always the case for Italian ices where it can sometimes be a bit muted. Every single bite of this was packed with flavor. They also carve out a bit of the middle to put the condensed milk which makes every bite much more equal than if it was just placed at the top. This was by far one of, if not the best, Italian ices we've ever had. We would very much recommend it to anyone in the Downtown area looking to cool off. read more

Went here for the first time last weekend due to someone else wanting water ice, sad to see its temp closed right now. I got the mango, passion fruit, and cotton candy flavors. By far, passion fruit was my favorite out of the 3, the other 2 were refreshing, but not personal favorites. If your particular about flavorings the definitely have some artificial taste to them so choose wisely. It's a cute hole in the wall shop for a grab and go water ice. So many flavors to choose from, hope they open back up soon so I can try some more! read more

I've been coming to Jim-Jim's long before moving to Austin. It's an Old 6th Street staple and there's a reason for it. Or should I say many glorious reasons? They have so many fun and yummy ice cream and water ice flavors to choose from. It's almost like being at a carnival in the middle of a city. This is a good thing because it brings back all those delicious memories associated with fairs and carnivals. Nice little walk-up with window service. My little Sir Benjamin even got some vanilla ice cream! read more

Finally stopped by to try Jim Jim's. Enjoyed mango and peach ice with vanilla soft serve. It was very tasty. My wife enjoyed her pina colada ice as well. The woman serving was friendly and helpful and the storefront was clean and charming. Reminds me of something you'd see in the northeast. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood. read more

I went on two different occasions: once to try the soft serve ice cream because they didn't have the premium ice cream flavor available and second time was to try the premium ice cream flavor. The service was solid, the ice cream ranges from mid - to good, and the pricing is more expensive than I'm used to. First trip- I got a vanilla soft serve cup with Oreo toppings (4.60$ after taxes) and it wasn't very good, it was average soft serve at best. Second trip- I got 2 scoops of the Oreo premium ice cream ($7.52 after taxes). The ice cream was good but definitely overpriced, I've gotten better and more ice cream for less the price. The place is okay but I definitely wouldn't come back. read more

It was scorching hot in Austin and we spotted Jim-Jim on yelp when we searching for a cool treat. The place is a small stand that seemed quite popular. Despite the size of the shop, they had lots of flavors for the water ice and homemade ice cream. Honestly I was torn about what to get. I really wanted to try the ice cream but also I want the water ice and I knew I could not eat both. So, since I had ice cream earlier in the day, I went with the water ice. I was definitely not disappointed! The flavors were sweet but not cloyingly so. The ice was packed well, the cup made it easy to eat, and the small size was just enough. This was a perfect way to cool off as we walked back to our hotel. All five of us were very pleased with our choices! read more

I just love me some Jim-Jim's! It's a staple in Austin, and it's a go-to on 6th Street, they've been there for a very long time so their sustainable, and the product is always quality good as well as the customer service - always nice and friendly. It's the best damn Italian Ice in town, hands down. There's so many options to choose from, my usual go-to is choosing from the plethora of yummy flavors from their water ice list. Strawberry Lemonade and Mango are their top sellers, I usually get mine 80% filled with Sugar Free Cherry and Sugar Free Watermelon - both of which are just superb. Then I top it off with a couple of other flavors to mix it in. I totally dig the Sour Apple, Orange Cream, Dragon's Blood, Grape, Lime, and Blue just to name a few. I've had their soft serve - it's really good. They have ice cream as well which I have yet to dive into. You can mix in a little soft serve with your water ice for a creamier version. But overall you cannot go wrong here, it's very refreshing and I've always had a good experience here. Get the punch card and after 10 visits you get a few bucks off - woo hoo!! A little window that could pass as an ice cream truck if you didn't see the building attached. A dizzying array of flavor choices. They all seemed quite artificial tasting and surprisingly faint on the taste though. It's refreshing on a hot day for sure, but I'm probably spoiled by having had so many real fruit gelatos and sorbets over the years. Blue Blast: Tasted like the typical "blue" artificial flavor that you get in blue drinks and blue candies. I loved the novelty of anything bright blue as a kid, so these are still fun from a nostalgia perspective. Sour Watermelon: Only had a slight watermelon flavor and wasn't that sour. Usually watermelon is my favorite Italian ice flavor, but this one was too mild. Passionfruit: Oh, I absolutely love passionfruit. I always order it if a cocktail or dessert is flavored with it. Sadly, theirs's was very artificial tasting and didn't approximate the real tartness and crispness of passionfruit. read more

Mm sweet and refreshing water ice! You can get split flavors and they have punch cards, which is a plus. I got the mangoberry (flavorful, fruity, perfect level of sweetness) and black raspberry (flavor was kinda faint, watery). Parking is a bit tricky so I suggest bringing a friend so they can hop out and buy the water ice while you circle around the block! read more

Stopped by here during the pecan street festival and I forgot how good water-ice is. A little more juicy than a snow cone with more of a texture of a blended iced (think icee) but more solid. The flavor is well incorporated so more than a snow cone or snowball. This place is on the tail end of dirty duct closer to the freeway. There's a window where you order. The only negative is they have one location and it's on dirty sixth but I guess that's what makes it special and they've been around since 90s and there are not too many Austin institutions that are still around from back then. read more

Snow comes spots in Austin seem so hard to come by and I was excited to find Jim-Jim's. Now I will say if your looking for a cooling snow one this this your spot. But by no means is this the best snow cone or even what I would consider a snow cone. First everything is premade and drowning in sweetness so the fresh shaved ice is missing. Jim Jim's Italian ice is a famous Texan staple - different from the typical Asian shaved ice / bingsu or Hawaiian shave ice, the various fruity flavors integrate super well with the ice like a slushie but softer and better! I got the Peach and Strawberry Lemonade water ice in a medium cup ($4) but the Mango and Strawberry Lemonade are the most popular flavors. Have you ever seen someone eat it on a scooter? Most likely, yes. Today's victim is my gf (see attached photo). I came to this store after treating several cuts and bruises. After several washes of blood off my hands, they were finally clean. But then I remembered, I can treat cuts and bruises with first aid... but the soul requires ice cream. After this realization we immediately ceased medical care and proceeded to find ice cream. Unfortunately, we had no ice cream near us, but a water ice place? What was that? I had no time to think. As an eagle scout, we were taught to react under pressure. My gf's soul was wearing thin, and we rushed to order a mango and passion fruit water ice cup. And my god. It was delicious, at a relatively low calorie index, this water ice thing did the trick. Rejuvenated, we continued our journey through life, safely putting this bump in the road behind us. In the summer heat this is definitely something you want to get. However, you would have to eat it quick as it will melt pretty fast. I got the Italian ice with vanilla ice cream. I love the mix between the icy and vanilla. As it melts, it makes a very creamy drink as well, they have a lot of flavors, so definitely have to go back and try. When I went, you can only order outside and eat it outside, as indoors was not open. read more

Wonderful stop for ice cream especially post meal. Hot night, still a tad hungry, sweating, queue ice cream stop! Jim-Jim's was on the way, so I figured it would be a great idea. Don't think Jim-Jim's could make it any easier as well with their street side ordering window and straight forward ordering with flavors (All posted on the window). I had opted for a butter pecan, which was quite tasty and very affordable. They also offer water ice, but I have never been a big fan of water flavored desserts, so cannot comment on it. To sum up a short review, your basic run of the mill water ice and ice cream stop and positioned in the perfect spot (6th street). read more

I was reading some of the two and three star reviews and thought to myself "what fun haters. How can anyone leave a bad review about popular ice cream place?? ". And then my experience was a 3 -tops :( I had hoped for so much more. I walked .4 miles in 103 degree Austin heat... and I'd have paid that much just for the brief periods of cold in my mouth- but actual deliciousness would've helped greatly. The orange "creamsicle" tasted like a bunch of chemicals, I thought it was supposed to be of real fruit. And Very little ice cream. Definitely kind of sketchy looking giving so much has closed down on 6th Street. However, the ice cream was good and despite seeing one or two guests approach without a mask, I felt fairly safe. What a place! I am a fan of snow cones and can be quite picky. Now before you correct me, I know this is Italian ice so isn't exactly the same as snow cones but it's SO GOOD! I get the orange dreamsicle with soft serve stuffed inside and it's to die for. read more

Roasted Beets & Fresh Mint (F, E) - delicious, subtly minty, with a very creamy, mild beet flavor. I never had such a refreshing ice cream that wasn't sorbet. The mint really made a difference. I'm a huge fan of places that curate exotic flavors (a vegetable, really?) into their menu, which only increased my opinion of this place. Hill Country Honey & Vanilla Bean (E) - one of the smoothest vanilla bean ice creams I've had. It reminds me of a traditional ice milk soft serve. It wasn't the most impressive vanilla ice cream I've ever had, but it was still very good in its own right. Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil & Sea Salt (E, D) - such a great balance to the sweetness of the rest of the ice cream options. I always love little chunks of salt in sweets to cut through the sugary intensity, so this one was an instant favorite. GOAT Cheese, Thyme, and Honey (E, D) - a complete 100% hit. Probably my top, alongside the beets. My BFF said it tasted too much like a meal rather than a dessert and couldn't give it a high rating, but as a charcuterie fan, I know there are plenty of "dessert" cheeses. I mean... cream cheese, for example? But is that really a cheese...? Uhhh. Very Strawberry (F) - a clean strawberry flavor. A bit artificial, but still so great. It far outweighed the Sweet Cream w. My beautiful girlfriend, traveling home from Vancouver, had a morning layover in Austin just recently on a weekday, and I got us a reservation to Paperboy East. Compared to the weekends, their schedule was a lot more open. On the weekends it can be nearly impossible to get a spot unless it's a few weeks in advance. We had a reservation at 8 am right when they opened, and when we walked in, we were seated immediately. The place looks like a modern twist on the old-school diners your grandparents love. There's also an upstairs and downstairs patio. Plenty of space! We were sat at one of the two-person tables. To start, I ordered their house drip coffee while my girlfriend got their "Lil Remi," an iced cappuccino with salted caramel. The black coffee was excellent and flavorful, while my girlfriend thought her Lil Remi was like a milkier shaken espresso that she really liked. From their starters, we ordered their Blueberry Lemon Pop Tart to share. I am a sucker for a homemade Pop Tart, and the jam on the inside was extremely fresh, and the icing and crust of the Pop Tart itself was sturdy and full of flavor. For our entrees, I ordered their Texas Hash with added avocado while my girlfriend ordered their famous Paperboy Pancake with chocolate chips as a full breakfast with bacon and two over-hard eggs. It wasn't a long wait at all to get our food. The Texas hash looked great and was presented quite nicely, which is a shame because I immediately proceeded to mash it all together to make sure every bite had a perfect balance of the roasted pork, sweet potatoes, egg, and avocado. It was very filling and substantial, which is great because I needed it to last me up to dinner. The pancake is the star of the show and is worth the order alone. The flying saucer they serve rises like a cake in the oven and is extremely fluffy. She was surprised with how it was a traditional pancake but loved how moist it was for its size. A perfect pancake to her. A perfect pancake to me because she couldn't finish it, so I took it to go and ate the last few bites immediately after dropping her off at the airport. For being an upscale diner in the prime area of Austin, I knew Paperboy was going to be pricey, but I honestly thought that it would crack $100 before tip between the two of us. I was very happy to see it was not even close to that and cost us about $80 with tip. To me, that felt fair for Austin, and I would pay that price any day of the week for a breakfast like we had. I've had a few of the locally owned brunch and breakfast spots in Austin and concur with the masses that this sits strongly at the top of the list. Best pancakes, best atmosphere, and the best times. This is such a velvety, flavorful, cold treat. I recommend the grape, black cherry, mango and peach (also, ask to have a taste of the chocolate...you'll be surprised how good it is). My friend had some of the sugar-free flavors and wasn't impressed. Unless you're diabetic, you have no worries! read more
