Whenever there's an excuse to go to Hui Lau Shan, I'm in. I love that the desserts are tasty but not overly sweet. We typically stop by if we're having dinner next door and I've been lucky to come here a few times without a wait. THE FOOD that I've tried: Mango Romance (meh), Pomelo Mango & Sago (I would get this again), Mango Mochi (Kid favorite), and Pomelo & Mango with Saga drink (I think this will become my regular order). THE SERVICE has always been consistently friendly and helpful. I was never rushed for a decision and usually got good recommendations or answers to my questions. THE AMBIANCE feels like a HK dessert shop. It's modern and clean inside with a variety of seating options should you come with a big group or just an individual. Overall, Hui Lau Shan is a win in my book; however it can get pricey with an average price of $8-10 per item. Our family of 4 easily can spend up $30-40 on desserts and/or drinks. read more

I was craving a mango dessert drink and Hui Lau Shan popped up in my head so here I am. I got the Mango & Coconut with Sago and it was a blended drink. Even though mango is out of season, the drink was still really good and refreshing, no sourness at all. My friend got the Mango Swirl and he was alright with it, he said it's just mango smoothie but he wished he added toppings to it. The prices for the drinks are pretty cheap, between $6-7. Came here to try some mango Asian dessert and it was pretty good. The dessert depends a lot on whether or not the mango is ripe and sweet. I got the mango triple delight which was mango, coconut and black glutenous rice. The combo together was unexpectedly good though I wish it was a tad sweeter. This is definitely not one of my favorite dessert places but a good option to try on days I want a more fruit based dessert. They're definitely good at what they offer. My friend and I met at 6:30 pm on a Thursday night and the shop was empty when we went in, but by the time we paid and got our orders people started rolling in. Our deserts came out fast; I tried a mango sago and it was delicious. The serving size for the price is reasonable. Despite the mangos not being in season, they were still sweet and ripe. The shop was bright, airy and clean. There were a variety of tables to sit at, and even an outdoor picnic table. Remember to put in your phone number into the table when you order so you can earn points to their rewards program! I also ordered a black sesame soup before I left and they gave me the option to get it hot or cold. I had heard of this place that makes desserts using mangos. Thought I would check them out and see what the hype is. It's a small side street. There is street parking. I did notice they open at noon. And I had arrived right at 11:56pm so I waited a few minutes until they opened. After looking over the menu I decided on the mango ice cream in a bubble waffle cone. The bubble waffle is made fresh. It's pretty large in size. The mango ice cream is good. It's creamy and tastes like mango. There is also small bite size chunks of mango as well. There is also these clear jelly clumps. They sort of had a coconut flavor. They were chewy and clear, and totally foreign to me. But they were good. I thought it was a nice dessert. And it wasn't that expensive for the amount you get. $8.50 Cute little dinning area with table and chairs. After I had sat down a group of people came in. Another small group came with their laptops. I am a huge mango lover, but unfortunately the mango did not deliver. :( The mango romance had 3 different smaller size desserts and I think it would've been so much better if the mango, which is the main star, was actually ripe. It was so sour and hard, which made me not want to keep eating it. 2/5 The best dessert of all was the mango coconut duo mix, it had black rice at the bottom which reminded me of mango sticky rice, but its own flavor to it. I've never had a dessert like it anywhere else in Austin. It's not overly sweet, but incredibly addictive! It's the main reason I keep coming back. The interior is bright and nice, though the chairs are way too low for the tables. Cleanliness can vary depending on how busy it gets, but service is good and I never wait too long for my order. This place is a pretty unique spot for ATX since we do not have many mango type dessert spots here. It is a chain from Hong Kong that makes desserts out of a specific type of mango so obviously their signature items are any of the mango desserts! I absolutely love the coconut jelly with black rice. TBH, this is the one item that keeps me coming back. I do enjoy their mango mochi but I think it is a pretty high price point to justify. And we were a little disappointed in their drinks, they have always come out slightly lukewarm. I will always pick to grab a drink at a boba spot over here. There is a decent amount of searing but usually it's a little busy so it can be hard to get a seat. But we often come in and grab stuff to go. We had finished eating dinner and we were looking for some dessert in the area and stumbled upon Hui Lau Shan. The restaurant is limited on seating inside, but does have some seating spaces outside. Parking wasn't too much of an issue, it shares a lot with an apartment complex among other businesses that are next to it. We ordered the Mango Chewy Ball and split it. It was the perfect size for two. The dessert was super fresh and definitely made (along with the rest of the menu) for mango-lovers everywhere. I loved the different textures within--the mango, the chewiness of the white ball pieces, and the ice cream/gelato-like scoop in the middle, surrounded by mango juice/syrup. It was really good. I been so excited to try this place! First in Houston, then Dallas but when they came to Austin, I finally got the chance to. I came maybe a week after their grand opening on a weekday morning and no wait. I got the mango sago. So good and refreshing! The staff recommended the pomelo mango one and it honestly tasted the same as the mango one but with hints of pomelo pulp bits here and there. Finally got to try multiple things from HLS. The best times to go are daytime or early evening on weekdays. Lol... This popular place gets slammed on the weekends and after dinner hours. But somehow they have implemented a great system for ordering and waiting. Outdoor seating is rough.. there are a ton of mosquitos at night in this area. Probably a better idea to sit in your car than the patio if you can't get a spot to sit inside. I've ordered the coconut jelly with chewy balls and a mango coconut sago drink. The coconut jelly was not sweet enough, in my opinion but the mangos have been consistently sweet and refreshing! They were really efficient and the food comes out fairly quickly. Not all menu items were available but we went with the Mango Romance ( basically a sampler of everything) and the Mango Coconut Duo. At around $8 an item, I was pretty disappointed in the portion sizes of the to go containers. It definitely is smaller than the online menu pictures and the display at the front of the store. They made up for it with mango flavorbomb desserts. The desserts were not too sweet and perfectly refreshing for the summer. I have been wanting to try out this place since I heard it opened. So happy to know it was next door to where we were having lunch so we hopped on over after lunch. It was busy but no lines. The rest has milk. Oh well busting out the lactose pills lol We ordered, 3 drinks all dairy free. The mango passion fruit and passion fruit green tea. Not sure they liked it. They said it was to thick and the passionfruit seeds were hard to not swallow. And the goo gel clumped in the bottom making it hard to drink. Another person also ordered their mango special that had a little mix of everything. Idk if they thought we said to go but everything was packaged so cutely. The ice cream was ok. The goo clump again was unique and odd lol reminded me of snot. The mochi was mochi. I got the rice balls and taro in milk. It tasted like coconut milk. I wonder if it was because in that case it's really not dairy. I am a big rice balls fan and make my own. I was disappointed because the rice balls weren't soft. How can they make that wrong? It was edible just not gooey soft like I like it. The taro too was good but couple were not done and in huge chunks and too hard. The sago in milk was good but everything is just so small. For the price it felt too small. All our deserts costed nearly $50 and that's because the payee accidentally pressed 18% tip. That seemed way too high a tip since they just pretty much brought out or dished out the desserts not sure if they were the ones making them all in the back by hand. Anyways I am glad I tried and wish I can give them more stars. But felt the price didn't justify the product at least what we ordered and had. No one raved about it and it's really just mango and cheap rice balls. The mochi and ice cream wasn't anything too too special and can be bought elsewhere. The whole place is cute but small and quaint. Not too much seating especially if it got packed. They have lemon water if you got thirsty which I appreciated. THE BIG: Hong Kong mango dessert shop in the "new chinatown" district of Austin near the 99 Ranch grocery store. Small space and there's always a line out the door. Parking is available in the lot for 2 hrs. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The wife and I came here around 7pm and the line was already out the door. When we left the shop, the line was even longer! Crazy. Total wait time was around 20 minutes for us. We ordered the Mango chewy ball and the mango mochi balls (comes in 6s). If you're not a mango lover like my toddler, well consider yourself lucky that they do have a strawberry yogurt smoothie option lol. But otherwise, your selection will be quite limited. Although they have been in soft opening because the lines have been out the door, when we went Sunday evening, the inside was packed but the line was tolerable aka inside.
