We ordered a nice spread: Bacon Maple Bar, Old Dirty Bastard, Apple Fritter, Blueberry Cake, Portland Cream, Strawberry Shortcake, Oh Captain My Captain, and a few more that basically stared us in the face and dared us. Every donut is oversized and huge. Sharing is your only option...there is no other way. The flavor combinations, though over the top, actually work together and it always surprises me somehow. It looks like random sugary trash thrown together, but nope. There is a method to the madness. Nothing TASTES like it's thrown together for shock value although it LOOKS like it is. I remember the first time I got Voodoo Donuts in Portland, OR. It was maybe my first vegan donut ever, and needless to say, it left a big impression. I'm happy to report that while I've had many, many more vegan donuts since, Voodoo still stands up to scrutiny, even after launching in dozens of different locations nationwide. This particular outpost is a genuinely fun spot to hang out in, with indoor and outdoor seating, and pinball machines for the kids. Plenty of parking around back, too. Word to the wise: If you have your heart set on a particular flavor, come early, and give them a call in advance just to make sure. This is especially true of the vegan options which are further limited. It seems I am having a Mandela effect moment about what I have believed was the first time I discovered voodoo donuts existed. In my memory, it was a magazine article, but I don't remember reading magazines after high school. Voodoo donuts was not established until 2003, and I graduated high school in 1997. I know that Portland, Oregon has been on my list of places to travel for a long time primarily because of this memory, voodoo donuts and the way that I learned they had magical donuts covered in cookies and cereal, which was the thing that didn't exist in the 90s or early 2000s not New York not then. I didn't realize Austin had Voodoo donuts and was SO EXCITED!! unfortunately the strawberry go tart I wanted was sold out. I selected a jelly donut type instead and the cereal one. I am so glad I finally had a chance to try them. It's definitely worth it if where you are visiting from doesn't have anything like, plus I believe they are the trailblazers !!! Voodoo Doughnut (VD) does have that doughnut magic! This was the first time I tried VD and was pleasantly surprised. First, the building is eye -catching in bright pink. Half of their doughnuts are mutant large starting about $4.50+ each. There are so many choices I felt like a kid trying to decide on an ice cream flavor. The cashier was very helpful in helping me to discern between a yeast v cake doughnut. Ultimately, I decided on the butter fingering. Very unique doughnut...it tasted like cake inside and very crispy on the outside. The cake part of the doughnut was mildly sweet. The topping was super sweet...a delicate balance. If you have the sugar cravings of a pre-diabetic then this is your spot. We've had numerous donuts from here from the glazed to chocolate glazed to, well, you get the point. All the donuts are always perfect in texture and packed with toppings and flavor. It's definitely a great specialty donut spot. We got them delivered and they were still very fresh when they arrived. The only knock I would say is how messy they can be, but hey, they're donuts. We've been to both locations but we're specifically rating the Burnet Road location on delivery. Excellent donut! And so funny... So these donuts are BIG and the dough is fluffy and very delicious. Add to this the very imaginative toppings and fillings and you have a pastry experience, not just a "donut". This time we went to this new (to me) location that is super easy to reach and with a large parking lot. I can report that at 3 pm there was no line... just a steady stream of customers walking in for their sweet treat. First we got 2 donuts to eat inside (there are 3 small tables indoors and more outdoors but it was a very cold day so we chose to stay inside). We got one donut filled with Boston cream and one that had a peanut butter topping and was filled with a white banana tasting cream... the combo was unusually delicious! So we shared and got to taste an oldie but goodie and a new combo. I paid about $8 all in. This location on Burnet Road sits directly next to Hat Creek burgers (which is one of my favorite stops) and across the street from thundercloud subs. They definitely have an extremely wide variety of donuts and you can also get a helping of espresso here as well. Some things you will not find here is kolaches, breakfast sandwiches and croissants. The donuts are great, but I wish they had more to offer than just donuts. When you go to pay for these somewhat pricey pastries, that tip screen will be waiting to add a little more to your total bill. read more

I love this place so much. The donuts are so good and always taste fresh. The staff is always incredibly kind. The atmosphere is just fun and quirky. They have normal donuts as well as some vegan options as well. They are definitely my favor donut shop. My personal favorite is the maple blunt which is a cinnamon sugar donut dipped in a maple icing with red sprinkles on one end of it. My bf's favorite is the c*ck and balls which is a huge filled donut dipped in black icing. Service was great! But that's not what I went for, I went to get a good donut and that is not what I got. I've been going to voodoo donut since I went to Portland. And they are normally delicious donuts! But today's donuts were gross. You could taste oil from frying them, and it tasted old and almost rancid. The chocolate on the chocolate ring donuts was not tasty, and it was so thickly put on, the ratio was so off. And the maple bar we got had SO much maple frosting, it squished the donut down. And it just did not taste good. After eating a few bites, I did not feel good and was sick most of the night after that.. unfortunately will not be going back. This new location just opened today in the building that used to be Lucy's Fried Chicken. This chain from Portland also has a location on 6th Street that I've seen but since this is a much more convenient location I was happy to try them for the first time today. They have a huge variety of flavors and colorful presentations like doughnuts with breakfast cereal on top. I love that, but the menu doesn't tell what any of them are supposed to taste like so you'd have to ask about each one. The menu instead gives you titles for each which often have tasteless innuendo or jokes, and there's even a doughnut with a pentagram. Yikes! The building works well for them with display cases on the counter and plenty of registers for when it's busy. There's a logo mural on a brick wall inside, a $6 photo booth, and perhaps three tables if you want to eat inside. There are also several picnic tables on the covered front porch if you want to eat on the premises, but there's no wifi and I assume most people will take their doughnuts to go. Which is for the best since the bad 90s rap music and ugly decor are very off-putting. I ended up getting a Banana Cream Pie doughnut which tasted very nice. It's larger than an average doughnut from Krispy Kreme or Dunkin but half of it is bread with not enough filling in the middle, but the banana cream is delicious. Unfortunately it's $3.75 which is way too much for a single doughnut, even with inflation. And some of the doughnuts go up to $6 each! And with a particular dozen selling for $25 this is about double the price of a regular chain. I also had a hot chocolate which was the wateriest, most flavorless hot chocolate ever so I definitely recommend not ordering one! When all is said and done I don't think I'll go back. Which is sad because the actual doughnuts seemed intriguing and the one I tasted was nice. But at the crazy prices and the unpleasant vibe of the place I'd rather go anywhere else. read more

I got a crew neck sweater, and two hoodies, one zipper and one pull over. The ambiance, was normal, I'm not good at describing ambiance. The service. This is why I did four stars instead of five... They aren't very welcoming. I did sense annoyance...but weren't rude at all. I did go twice in one day. Morning and evening. Two different shift and notice the same energy. I had only ever been to location on sixth Street, but this was a great addition to the Voodoo Doughnut. This location has free parking available, and the same grade donuts as the other location. I love that you can see the way they are adding the toppings to the donuts. Staff has always been very friendly. I'd say that Voodoo is a 3.5/5. It's always good and it's fun to get such a large variety of donuts, but no donut here is that memorable, to the point that I can't even decide on a favorite one. None of them are disappointing but they're also exactly as good as your good local donut shop. Certainly better than the other donut chains, but I don't know if that's saying much. But all that being said, Voodoo is always solid and I do think they make good cake/old fashioned donuts. I don't think their fillings are very good though. read more
