This place is well known for their unique donuts. However I wish they'd take the time to improve on the basics of donuts. I love powdered sugar donuts, and every time they're so incredibly dry. The Hostess powdered sugar donuts you can buy from the grocery store are more moist. I keep ordering one thinking maybe they've improved and I just got a donut on an "off day". Nope. Voodoo Doughnuts have been around in Austin for years. It's nice that there is one outside of Downtown. It's more accessible for folks in the North burbs. Also, it's just easier to park. I recently stopped in with my Mom. We had just finished lunch, and we wanted a sweet treat. We were also going to stop by a friend's house so we couldn't go empty-handed. We got a few different doughnuts. I was only able to take a photo of a few of them. The Homer is my son's favorite. It's a strawberry frosted with sprinkles. It's a classic. We also got Viscous Hibiscus. The frosting is hibiscus with black frosting. It had a nice tart taste, and the sprinkles added a nice crunch. We also had the Mango Tango, which was a mango-filled donut with a crunchy mango topping and icing. It was so delightful. We brought over the Banana Cream Pie and a Voodoo Doll doughnut to share with a friend. They looked delicious, but we could not taste them. I can only imagine how great those would have been. It took us a while to make our choices because we kept watching the carousel. The guy working the counter was so nice and patient. Thankfully, no one else was there, so we could take our time. I loooove donuts and so was very excited when Voodoo opened up in my neighborhood. I tried the bacon maple donut and it looked amazing but it was pretty disappointing: it didn't taste fresh (probably it didn't help I visited in the late afternoon) and a cake-type donut that's not recently made doesn't get any better over time. The icing was very sugary and the bacon was stale. I tried to engage a little with the staff but they just seemed annoyed by having to take my order, despite me being their only customer. Assessing their mood I decided not to ask, hey what's your best seller? or what's fresh? (which I obviously regret). (And last World Vegan Day, they ran a special, $20 for a dozen rather than the normal $30.) (3) Lowest suggested tip % on the display is 10%, which is proper for counter service. Some places put the minimum at 18%, part of making tip inflation out of control. (I tipped 15% b/c the display offered me a 10% option. Had the minimum been 15%, I would have tipped only 10%.) CONS: Chocolate is not Fair Trade, which means the cocoa beans were likely harvested with child labor, slave labor, and/or child slave labor in Africa. Minus two stars for that. read more

I have tried to give voodoo donuts so many tries & I will say this place is literally all hype! I've gotten the classic captain crunch donut, the voodoo doll stuffed with raspberry filling, maple old fashioned and sprinkled.. all of which I usually take a bite of and tossed. I give this place 2 stars cause they do make essentially cute donuts... but that's about it. The donuts are never fresh, usually dry stale and gross. Again, they look cool and they come up with great ideas and designs for donuts, but do not go here expecting to satisfy any sort of donut craving.. the last time I went they stacked my donuts together in a bag and the icing got everywhere.. Stopped at Voodoo Doughnuts to pick up something sweet to share with my family. There's a big sign out front so it's easy to find. When you go inside there are a few small tables to sit at. They have a variety of Doughnuts to choose from. You can look at their menu and order individual doughnuts or you can buy them by the dozen. They have voodoo dozen, classic dozen, and vegan dozen. They have two rotating trays for you to look at the Doughnuts. You go up to the register to order. The person at the register who took my order answered my questions. I decided to get a birthday cake doughnut to try and a voodoo dozen to share with extended family. The birthday cake doughnut was really good. It was super sweet as it had sprinkles and vanilla frosting on the outside and a sweet strawberry filling on the inside. It tasted like a birthday cake. These doughnuts are very sweet and they are priced reasonably. So if you like variety and have a sweet tooth this is the place for you. read more

Reviewing Voodoo Donuts today. Regular Glazed - Good. Birthday Cake - I have never enjoyed cake donuts yet I enjoyed this one. I took a bite earlier in the day and got that regular cake flavor and I was like whatever. But then I woke up in the night and it was a different story. Ugh, what a waste of prime real estate! Even though Lucy's started going downhill in the past few years, we'd still take them over this doughnut nonsense. We've been to the downtown location of Voodoo a couple times to grab stuff to go and aren't the biggest fan of their over-the-top style, but our daughter was excited to try the this spot, so we grudgingly agreed to take her this past Sunday morning. First thing to observe: the layout is stupid beyond belief. There are two doors, so people who walk in with one just start queuing up at the nearest register instead of forming a single line. We happened to walk into the correct door and there's a window (to their detriment) where you can see the "room where it happens" re. doughnut making. Honestly, it looked like a scene out of CSI but instead of blood, there was frosting EVERYWHERE and it looked like a coyote had ransacked the place. So, sanitation?: not so much! We ordered four doughnuts from an grumpy worker and wanted to get some iced coffees, which they had, but guess what: there was no ice in their ice machine! Good thing you guys seem really prepared to be open. Because it was chilly out, we wanted to sit inside, and here's another stupid thing about their setup: their are only three tiny high top tables smooshed together at the end when there is PLENTY more space for more tables. We had to wait for one family to clear before we could sit down. Doughnuts themselves: meh. The sprinkle cake one was probably the most enjoyable since it was the simplest. Our daughter's "voodoo bubble" was cloying beyond belief, and the "voodoo doll" had way too much jelly in it, which, no surprise, squirted everywhere. We do have to say that the apple fritter was decent, and did seem somewhat fresh. Best part: we asked for a knife...and yup, you guessed it: they didn't have any!!! So, big picture: unfriendly service, poor logistics, no ice, no cutlery, limited seating, and overpriced doughnuts that are only OK. NO THANK YOU! I've been here twice now and both times I asked (politely of course!) what was fresh. And both times I've gotten a response stare that was as if I asked them to recite pi to 100 digits. The first time she eventually basically said everything was fresh, but the apple fritter was actually totally stale as were all the other donuts we got. The 2nd time the guy finally said he didn't really know but luckily someone working in the back heard and told us she had just made the apple fritters, and this time it was indeed nice and fresh. I don't know, I feel like "what's fresh" is a totally normal question to ask a donut shop that makes donuts 24 hours a day and they should be able to tell you. read more

So here's my voodoo doll donut cut in half as you can see with virtually no filling. There was a squirt of filling at the base good for like one bite. This is a $4-plus donut. And not a one off. Very dirty inside. Everything was grimey, smudgey handprints everywhere. Extremely filthy inside. The station with drinks looked so gross with crumbles and filth all inside it. The lady taking orders was very slow. Veeeeeeery slow. Only one person ahead of us and that took 20 minutes, which is forever when you have kids in tow. We ordered 4 donuts. When we got home, she got our order wrong. She also smooshed our donuts together so the icing (from a donut we didn't order) was all over my apple fritter. First world problems, but may be this will help management get it together. read more

Haven't had a bad donut here yet. I visit every few months when I want an over the top tasty treat. The working is a bit rough (downtown and 6th street) but if you can manage it and don't mind a bit of waking then try them any time of day. They used to sell a huge bucket of day old donuts for a really small price but I cannot imagine eating more than 3 donuts in one week since they are so decadent. read more

Visited with my daughters and, unfortunately, didn't enjoy it as much as we'd hoped. Some cool ideas, as you'd expect, but everything was way too sweet and over the top. The kids loved the wacky choices, but even they couldn't get through the single donut they'd chosen. The biggest sin was that the base donuts were very mediocre and dry. Too often, these types of places suffer from style over substance. It's fun to do once, but I don't usually need a dessert on top of my dessert. read more

Such a cool place with great vibes. The doughnuts are ridiculously good and have some funny names. Careful with little ones because some of the doughnuts names and shapes might spark a conversation that you're not ready to have yet lol. My little boy asked me about the shape and name of one and I was chuckling inside but somehow managed to keep up my parent facade by answering 'Yeah, that's inappropriate for you.' Thankfully he left it alone. We didn't even make it out of the parking lot before destroying our doughnuts. They were that good. Unfortunately, one cannot purchase a spell at voodoo doughnuts, but the donuts are out of this world. Amazing variety. Love the glazed old fashioned because I get that one every donut shop I go to. They have the old standbys (glazed raised etc) but also lots of fun and funny innovative donuts. Took some photos here to share. Staff were friendly and courteous and seemed happy to be there. The place seems very clean and well kept up. Fun to be able to watch them make the doughnuts fresh. This is such a beautiful new shop with gorgeous donuts. I keep going in hopes something would change. Unfortunately the staff is extremely slow / incompetent - I mean just terrible - I Don't know how hard it could be to Operate a cash register!!! You'll wait 30 minutes in line because they can't figure out how to give change and every order they give the wrong donuts so people have to come back for their missing/correct order - and the donuts are AWFUL tasting :( we threw all 3 out today.
