Kessho is always great for a hot summer day. Today was no different. The hubs and I grabbed a pineapple upside down cake gelato for a nice afternoon treat. The gelato was cool, smooth and oh so delicious. You can taste the fresh pieces of pineapple and the Taiwanese pineapple cake embedded in the gelato. It's layered for enjoyment. Service is always fast and easy no matter how long the line. Fortunately, today we were able to walk right up. Pretty chill today...no rain and not too much sunshine. read more

I have stopped by Kessho a few times now to grab pints of gelato to go. So far I've tried their Black Sesame Cookies and Cream, Ube, and Mango Sticky Rice (vegan) and every single flavor has been spot on. All three have half bold flavors without being too sweet (this is probably the best compliment an Asian dessert can get). In addition, all of their gelatos have the perfect smooth consistency without melting too quickly. They are located in the same food truck park as Asado's Taqueria so there are plenty of picnic tables to sit at. Between the small lot adjacent to the park area and street parking, I have never had an issue finding somewhere to park close by. read more

I had a sample and I was sold! Kessho gelato had a booth said up at the East Village Market tasting. I tried the black sesame butter cup flavor. It reminded me of cookies and cream. It was so tasty. I stopped by here for a casual date night for burritos and looked over and saw this Asian inspired dessert stop that i knew i needed immediately after we wrapped our dinner. I let my husband know their menu offering had an abundance of amazing Asian selections and needed to sample all the gelato flavors, but didn't want to get too wild. Their portion scoop sizes for their cups is lovely and the service was swift. I absolutely loved the black sesame and can't wait to go back! Parking is shared with asado's small lot and street parking and love their presence up north and hope more folks find out about this hidden gem! Got the mango sticky rice and black sesame. Both were delicious though I'm partial to the mango. Could potentially be a little sweet for some though. I loved the variety of flavors that were not your typical ones, and would definitely come back to try others. It's in a very small food truck area, next to a coffee place and a very tasty burrito truck (recommended!). Parking was ok, also can park a block or so away in the neighborhood if needed. Plenty of tables, some with cover for the heat. Service was quick, and they let you sample, too. Overall highly recommended! read more

My teen is obsessed with all things ube (the pretty purple yam native to the Philippines, used in many tasty Asian sweet treats), so when I saw that KESSHO had opened a new location on the north side of town, I knew we needed to head over to try their ube gelato at the next opportunity. KESSHO means "crystal" in Japanese, and you'll see this shape referenced in the molds for their gourmet chocolate bars. The founders Liang and Mark have put their passion and expertise for creating high quality "bean to bar" chocolate into 2 post-pandemic locations in Austin serving candy, pastries, and frozen treats that blend Asian and Western flavors. The original is in South Austin on Live Oak, and this new location is up north, near the intersection of Justin Lane and Burnet Road. We came over after 3pm on a Sunday and that was our mistake, because they were already sold out of 3 gelato/sorbet flavors and handed the last serving of the mango sticky rice gelato (the one I really wanted to try) to a person in front of us. Wahhh! The sweet lady at the window said yes to our request to sample a couple of flavors, and we pivoted to ordering a couple of pints of what was left, black sesame chip and cookies & creme to take home. We waited under one of the shaded picnic tables to be called back to pickup our purchases. The teen's beautiful ube double scoop cone ($5.50) was served quickly. He loved it and scarfed it down, while we waited for the 2 x $12 pints. They were packed into a great little cooler bag for the 10 mile ride home. Needless to say, they were quite soft by the time we got to try them, but WOW, what delicious gelato! I'll be back later this week for that mango sticky rice gelato and one of the decadent chocolate bars that started it all. Shut up and take all of my money! It is rare to find a boutique sweets place that has high-quality sweets in more unusual flavors. Kessho has pricy chocolates that we tried out at the grocery store, and wanted to try their gelato here because the chocolate bars are some of the best we've ever had. Definitely a splurge because prices are HIGH. You are paying for quality. You are getting quality. The sesame is to die for (the cookie and the gelato). I'm not really someone who ever craves ice cream, but hearing about all of Kessho's interesting flavors, I knew I had to stop by. I'm also really glad they opened this location, because the Live Oak one always seemed a bit too far for me to make the drive out. And the flavors are so amazing! The lychee rose is probably my favorite, but the yuzu watermelon was so refreshing and I'm sure it'll be a great hit for the summer. The mango sticky rice was also really addicting. But I found myself leaving the mango swirls to the side and going more for the sticky rice swirls instead. I would still eat it all and enjoy it if the scoop was just the sticky rice flavor. They also have a lot of cool chocolate flavors. The worker was really nice and allowed us to sample some, so def a great choice! read more

possibly my new favorite ice cream/gelato spot! its not too sweet (which is perfect) and the scoops are big. there are so many unique, asian-inspired flavors to choose from that i was sooo indecisive. the black sesame cookies and cream was my favorite. so nutty and fragrant, with generous bits of cookies mixed in. the azuki bean came in second; it had real red bean throughout and tasted incredibly comforting. the mango sticky rice was also amazing, super refreshing with a great balance of mango and coconut, and you could even taste the sweet, steamed fragrance of the sticky rice coming through! the lychee rose raspberry was our least favorite of the four, but still really good. it mostly tasted like lychee with lychee jelly, and we couldn't really pick up much of the rose or raspberry. overall, we were obsessed with the nuance in each flavor and the creamy richness of the gelato. already planning to go back and try the ube next :D read more

Kessho cells, Asian flavored chocolate bars in multiple places around the city, but I only recently visited their truck where they have really tasty and rich Asian themed ice cream flavors. There were so many good options on the menu that it was hard to pick ones to try, but we ended up choosing their seasonal yuzu cheesecake and miso caramel flavors. Both so good and it would be really hard for me to eat one serving by myself so I'm glad that we shared because their portions are very generous. Whatever stars aligned for Kessho to share a spot with Asado's Taqueria, I don't know, but thank goodness for it! After a deliciously filling meal at Asado's, your stomach will find the space to make room for the Asian flavor inspired gelato creations at Kessho! With generously sized scoops, you will not only get your dollars' worth, your flavor palate will be thanking you! The ube and strawberry matcha are some of my favorite offerings I've tried so far. You can tell they use real matcha in their gelato, and I honestly felt the caffeine hit - placebo or not, the matcha flavor was bold, not bitter, and exactly what I had hoped for! The only gelato flavor I'm not a huge fan of so far is the mango sticky rice. The gelato itself is delicious, but the "toasted" rice bits are actually quite hard, and ruins the experience as it actually feels like you might chip a tooth on uncooked rice. Seating is fully outside and often has a line, but service moves along at a steady enough pace. At night, the picnic tables fill up with a lot of lively chatter and couples/groups, which makes for a great vibe to end your day out and about. read more

This might be the pinnacle of gelato. It's so hard to find Asian inspired ice cream flavors but Kessho nails it with their perfectly smooth, not too sweet flavors. I really liked the matcha ice cream - you have to pay extra for it but worth every penny as the matcha is strong but clean. The ube was very purple but it has that slight cookies and cream vibe to it if you haven't had it before. The black sesame is awesome - nutty and complimented well with the white chocolate scattered throughout. Also their cookies are excellent - they were sold out of the chocolate chunk when we went, but the black sesame one is excellent as is, and more unique to boot. All that said, the chocolate chunk is probably the more interesting because this place is known for their chocolate and odd that I barely ate any of that here haha. Pretty quick service. Parking is street and might be a bit further into the neighborhood but worth swinging by for sure! read more

I absolutely love the asian flavors of ice cream that Kessho has to offer! The Banana Shoyu Caramel is a limited edition flavor and it tastes exactly like it says. The Mango Sticky Rice swirled in with puréed mango and coconut milk is fantastic. Both were so creamy and not too sweet either! Get a chance to check out their chocolate as well; their Mala Szechuan Chocolate and Lamb Chocolate is a flavor explosion in your mouth. Overall, 10/10. read more

These Asian ice cream flavours are so cool! I got the peach oolong and lychee rose flavours, and they tasted exactly like their names. A medium bowl (2 scoops) was about $6. This is such a unique ice cream shop for Austin. This ice cream truck shares a space with another food truck, and the picnic tables were dirty with tons of flies and mosquitoes. It was packed though. Food trailer is located in the parking lot behind a Cheri coffee and flower adjacent to Asados food trailer. There are picnic tables with umbrella shade in the front. You can park in a couple of private lots or on the street. The lady at the window was very friendly and sweet. You are able try samples of the gelatos, sorbets, cookies, and chocolates before buying. My faves were the black sesame, ube, and mango sticky rice. The black sesame gelato reminded me of a stracciatella gelato, but it had chucks of a black sesame bark that just made it even better. Ube was creamy and delicious. The mango sticky rice gelato tasted like my favorite Thai dessert. Definitely will be back. read more

Wow! Had no idea that gelato could taste THIS good!! Skated by this trailer on a warm Saturday afternoon and walked right up to order. My wife and I shared a mango rice gelato and a purple yam gelato. Listen, if you would have told me the yam gelato would be good beforehand I would have laughed. I'm not laughing now! It was amazingly good, as was the mango rice one. Prices really weren't too bad and the person working was very nice and helpful.
