First place I've seen in Austin that has rolled ice cream and in a truck at that! I am glad that they have the coconut ice cream version for a dairy free option. Also if you're not very hungry the portions are huge so sharing is a good idea! I got the Sticky Mango. Honestly was not a fan, the ice cream was very hard and difficult to eat. Also the coconut flavor from the ice cream was extremely overpowering and I couldn't taste the mango. Good service and cool flavors. read more

I love rolled Thai style ice cream, I have been to many places and this is by far the worst that I have had. First of all, the service is terrible. I was passing by this place and there was no line and there were two people working inside and not one of them acknowledged, me instead one of them said "hold on" as he looked for his phone charger and proceeded to connect his phone. Clearly customer service isn't important to them even though they have a jar saying "we work for tips". He put no effort into my item. Moving on to the ice cream, I ordered the sticky rice. It tasted icy and watery and not creamy as this type of ice cream should be. The rolls were not aesthetically pleasing, in addition to not having any toppings (every place I've been to except this one includes toppings). As well as lacked in flavor. Basically tasted like milky water. I thought about returning and saying something but I was running late, and honestly I didn't think it would get any better. An observation I made is their rolling surface had a layer of ice on it. This place is definitely not worth it. read more

Simply put, it's not worth it. I will first share the combo I made which actually tasted quite good: organic coconut milk, sweet cream, toffee and chocolate, coconut flakes, and honey. If you're going, trust me and try that combo. Well, if you STILL go after what I have to say... So you go up, order your combo, and they get to work. They make a liquid base and add your toppings into it, then throw it on the freezing plate to begin turning it into ice cream. You have to work fast and keep the liquid/ice mixture always in motion to avoid some parts being too frozen, causing them to stick to the plate and making it difficult to scrape off (that was meant for the girl that was working the night that my friends and I were there). The goal is to get the ice cream evenly frozen to a certain point, then scrape it up into rolls to place in the cup. The owner does it right, but the girl doesn't...and it's obvious. Also, don't touch the ice cream with your glove that's on your hand that's used to hold the scraper. We don't know where the scraper has been. The wait is long as there are only 1-2 workers each time. I applaud the owner for bringing this style of making ice cream here as it's the first time I've seen it in the states. Like I said, he actually makes the ice cream as it should, but of course is not as skilled as the vendors that do it in Thailand. As someone else mentioned, you're paying for the experience here... just, don't take this to be what Thai-style ice cream really is. For starters, the rolls suck. Notice how there are 3-4 uneven rolls in all the cups in the pictures? In Thailand they can fit 5+ is a nice and neatly shaped bundle. Proportions are seemingly off too, for the combos at least. My friend ordered the Thai...coffee I think? It was supposed to have cardamom in it but neither of us could taste any hint of it. Balance the portioning of the toppings in accordance to the strength of the base flavor please (coffee is strong, y'all should know that.) Speaking of flavors, the ice cream itself isn't anything special. It's not extremely creamy nor is it very icey. It's quite normal ice cream actually, and the rolls and look of your ice cream totally morphs within 5 minutes anyway as the ice cream melts and it becomes...well, normal ice cream... So in terms of price, prepare to drop 6.50-7.50 here for a cup. No, it's not as big as you think, and I personally would rather just help myself with a nice pint of Haagen Daz or even Blue Bell. 4/10, would not come again...unless someone was paying for me...just kidding, I'd tell them to pay for me for some other dessert ice cream truck. read more

It got me. At first I was very skeptical. Thai style ice cream is very different from normal ice cream... it's much icier! I got birthday cake and there were nothing but tiny delicious sprinkles and cake pieces in the icy rolls. With whipped cream on top! Very very unique way of making ice cream. You have to try it already once and she how they make The ice cram into rolls. The staff here is not nice and I had this one blonde older lady just absolutely rude and was not personable at all. I've been here three times. The third time the wait was 20 minutes. Left and came back and had to wait another 20 minutes. Overall it was a 2 hour ordeal. Parking sucks because of the other restaurants around it. Won't be making a special trip to come back just because of the staff and the wait. And it's pretty good, but not worth it. I love the snow one place behind it. My favorite place. Get ice cream in the bottom and sour apple with Carmel on top. Amazing at the snow cone place. read more

I've been to Holla Mode quite a few times since moving to ATX. I do have to say, it's delicious, it's unique, and they're in a great location, but almost every time I visit, the service is slow and not bad, but not good. For example, I took my younger cousin who is 9 years old and she wanted whipped cream. We were told they ran out by one employee and then the other employee said they had some. Basically, the first employee didn't bother to ask or check. I didn't think this was a big deal until I went again today and they told me the same thing. They also ran out of half the menu at 6pm. I enjoy Holla Mode, but they need to get their act together. read more

Based on the reviews, I knew coming in not to expect great service. However, they've definitely taken care of the service aspect by putting up a sign that completely excuses them of having really awful service! (See attached photo). Good job Holla Mode. Pushing customers away with your excuses :-) Similar to other reviews, the ice cream itself is good. I really enjoyed the firm texture with a bit of an icy crunch. I ordered the sticky mango and it wasn't too overly sweet which is what i was worried about. I do feel like it was a bit plain though, and they could've topped it with some additional cubes of mango or something. It's a bit overpriced imo. They don't have much seating besides 2 picnic tables, and the wait can be pretty long! The service wasn't anything too bad when we came, but it took quite a while considering that there weren't too many people in front of us in line. TBH I was just a bit peeved after seeing the sign because I feel like customer service is one of the most important parts of food service (besides the food ofc) and it doesn't look too great on the company to not take actual care to address the issues relevant to their service. Good job on the ice cream, Holla Mode; but maybe you should start looking internally to improve your culture :/ read more

I've always wanted to try this. Finally did and I wasn't impressed. I got the 'Sticky Mango' and I wasn't sure what to make of it. It just tasted sweet and cold (hardly any mango flavor) It is pricey! ($7 for a serving) and it takes a long time for them to make it. With about 5 people ahead of me, I took more than 30 mins for me to order and get my ice cream. With the price and the time I waited, I expected something spectacular. Im glad I tried it but I won't be going back. read more

Great ice cream but doesn't make up for the bad service we got. The employees were not helpful to us when my Apple Pay didn't work (because their register wasn't working and I've never had any prior problems). After we thought we had paid, we went to wait and 10 minutes later, a lady came out and told us our payment didn't go through and that we had to reorder and get back in the at least 30 minute line- she should have had us back up to fix it- not have to get back in line when it was her fault. Even though the ice cream is great and Holla Mode makes it clear that it takes a while, having to stand in the long line (in the Texas heat with no shade twice) made us regret coming. Also the employees (who weren't even wearing masks to serve ice cream) were not friendly, this day. Edited: the owner reached out and instead of being defensive, apologized. He also assured me that they are following all precautions for Covid-19 food places. I didn't see employees wearing masks but hopefully he can correct this. I appreciate this is a hard time for the food service industry. read more

Pretty pricey, but the flavors were so fresh! Not to mention it was a very hot day in Austin during that month if May. I would've taken a picture of my ice cream if I didn't devour it before we sat down at a bench nearby. So instead we took this picture while we waited since there was a lot of people in front of us. I got the mint chocolate flavor, which is normally my go-to flavor for ice cream. But like I said. So much flavor and freshness! This used to be mine & my husband's favorite ice cream place to bring our child to, but sadly I think today was our last visit. After we ordered & paid for our ice cream one of the workers sprayed cleaner all over the fridgerated cold slab where they prepare the ice cream, literally Purell cleaner landed on the fridgerated tops where they prepared our ice creams 1 minute later. I can see maybe spraying the rag and then wiping the surrounding area down, but this woman literally sprayed the cleaner onto an ice top that did not get scraped down before food was prepared (the frost is usually scraped off before they make an ice cream, this wasnt done, pure laziness), which means not only was frost in our ice cream but also chemicals! I was appalled, the spraying of the chemicals is toxic. It's like having a plate of food on the counter and then spraying cleaner all around the food....the chemicals obviously fall on the food. I should note, there were 4 employees there, and NO ONE in line when we arrived, but it still took a while to get out ice cream. After the cashier rang us up she made the 1st ice cream on the frosty chemical table, while the woman who sprayed the chemicals sat there talking her ear off the entire time. Meanwhile the other 2 employees were standing around chatting. If you have 4 employees and only 2 ice creams to be made then how is only 1 ice cream being made at a time?? This is ridiculous. We finally got that ice cream but then....when it came time to make the 2nd ice cream things got worse. To make matters worse, while a man was preparing the 2nd ice cream, the woman who made the 1st cream came over & literally placed her arms on the counter around the fridgerated top area where he was preparing the food & rested her chin on top of her arms with her face literally 2 - 3 INCHES from the ice cream & watched him make the ice cream, breathing all over the food he was preparing for us. This is unbelievably unsanitary!! Between the chemicals and the unsanitary practices I think I may just report this place to the health board so someone doesnt get sick. Btw, when we left we threw our ice creams away, we couldnt even bring ourselves to eat them after that...and this ice cream is not cheap, we paid about $16 for 2 ice creams. These employees need better training before working in the food service industry. This was on 11/9/19 at 5:15pm. Not too mention, during my visit prior to this one, the guy prepared the food without gloves!!! So this last experience just pushed us over the edge, this place doesnt seem sanitary or safe enough to eat at anymore between chemicals sprayed on the food, an employee literally putting her head inches from our food breathing on it and the visit before where the cashier handled money then made our food without using gloves. We've had enough, this place isnt THAT good! read more

Heard so much about this trailer, finally was able to visit a few weeks ago! So happy I did! We ordered the Oreo Speedwagon, DELICIOUS! My daughter wanted just vanilla with lots of sprinkles. The nice lady working that day paid special Attention to ask my daughter if she wanted rainbow or chocolate...rainbow of course was chosen. I watched as the lady was sure to wash and dry her hands, and put gloves on before she made the ice cream, and then she changed gloves again before the next ice cream. As a Mom during everything going on, this was terrific to see, THANK YOU. for the safety and care of this process. My daughter loved watching the whole process, and as the lady rolled the ice cream she smiled, and gave a thumbs up to my daughter so my daughter knew this was her ice cream. Very interactive even with the window down. This is the place my daughter talked about to everyone for the next few days! The lady gave us one of her cards so we will remember where to come back to( we are new in the Austin area, and this will be our " go to" for ice cream now) The flavors of everything we ordered were amazing, service was outstanding and I can hardly wait to come back and bring friends when Austin opens everything back up! The gist: tastes is good but roll is inconsistent Lots of good Asian flavors, but it is a bit pricey. It's actually not too bad, but I would recommend one order for two people, because it is a lot of ice cream and you can customize as you like. On a one-way ticket to Thailand I hopped around for three months and discovered pure greatness. Thai style ice cream was being made on the streets and I had to have it. After befriending the operators in Koh Phi Phi and Chiang Mai, I decided that doing a natural approach to this awesome treat would warm the hearts of those in my hometown, Austin.

Roasted Beets & Fresh Mint (F, E) - delicious, subtly minty, with a very creamy, mild beet flavor. I never had such a refreshing ice cream that wasn't sorbet. The mint really made a difference. I'm a huge fan of places that curate exotic flavors (a vegetable, really?) into their menu, which only increased my opinion of this place. Hill Country Honey & Vanilla Bean (E) - one of the smoothest vanilla bean ice creams I've had. It reminds me of a traditional ice milk soft serve. It wasn't the most impressive vanilla ice cream I've ever had, but it was still very good in its own right. Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil & Sea Salt (E, D) - such a great balance to the sweetness of the rest of the ice cream options. I always love little chunks of salt in sweets to cut through the sugary intensity, so this one was an instant favorite. GOAT Cheese, Thyme, and Honey (E, D) - a complete 100% hit. Probably my top, alongside the beets. My BFF said it tasted too much like a meal rather than a dessert and couldn't give it a high rating, but as a charcuterie fan, I know there are plenty of "dessert" cheeses. I mean... cream cheese, for example? But is that really a cheese...? Uhhh. Very Strawberry (F) - a clean strawberry flavor. A bit artificial, but still so great. It far outweighed the Sweet Cream w. Strawberry flavor we tasted later. Cookies & Cream (F) - I never liked cookies & cream before, but this changed my mind. It hits so hard when you get a full spoonful. Probably the only cookies & cream I would eat. My BFF's #1. Chocolate Chocolate (F) - love chocolate? Get this. That's all you need to know. Coffee & Cream (D) - oooh, reminds me of the keto coffee ice cream I had once. Would get again. Coffee notes are always great in ice cream. Was this a STRONG standout? No. But did it do its job? Yes. Sweet Cream w. Strawberry (D) - too creamy for me, not enough strawberry. My top flavors by far are: 1) Roasted Beets & Fresh Mint, 2) GOAT Cheese, Thyme, and Honey, and 3) Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil & Sea Salt. It was really interesting to see how many people came in for a sweet treat at 11 PM. The atmosphere was pleasant, parking was pretty easy, and while it never got too crowded, the place was surprisingly popular.

I must start by saying that we almost didn't wait in the long line. But, I'm so glad we did! It was delicious, and well worth the wait! I can't believe how some people give fewer stars, as we loved the experience and more importantly loved the ice-cream! We engaged the staff and they were super friendly. I have been to this place a few times and MAN is it good! It's just as fun to watch them make it as it is to eat it! Fascinating. I want one of those cold plates in my house! You should be prepared that at peak times, there can be a bit of a line but that's just because it's so awesome and everyone wants some and it's well worth the wait!! This is the most horrible business I've been to in a while. Waiting in the heat for 30 minutes just for damn ice cream and to watch the stupid blond kid on his phone constantly or messing with other people sort of working. And then there's a kid with long brown hair that had to sing to every damn song. Overall this business is trash so don't waste your time. All these 16 year old need to get fired. Wow. The staff move like molasses. Soooo slow.... By the time they put your rolled ice cream in the cup and serve it to you. The ice cream is already melted. Not the friendliest bunch either. Belgian chocolate was so smooth and was the best one! What was a letdown was the cone on top. It's so tough to chew-stale? Couldn't finish it. Lots of parking in the plaza. They don't have public restrooms. I think having a water station would be nice to cleanse the palate.
