If you have never had Burmese food, you need to try it. It's sort of a cross between Thai and Indian food, but somehow better than either. The appetizers they make with yellow lentils are spectacular. I discovered this place when I had only 1.5 days left in Honolulu, so I went there for dinner the last two nights. Went there on March 21 to pick up beef Biryani and bread. Had it at 6pm and started to vomited & diarrhea at 8-9pm for over 12 hours. That night was brutal! Had to call in sick on March 22 and still feel sick after 4 days with heart burn & stomach pain. Went there few times and I love their food. Too bad I got sick from their food. Excellent Burmese cuisine located right in the heart of Honolulu! I have to thank my friend who accompanied me here for such a wonderful recommendation. My friend made reservations for us and we arrived right on time for dinner. I would highly recommend that you make a reservation as this place fills up quickly. The interior is small but cozy and very clean. They offer an array of traditional Burmese plates that include both vegetarian and vegan options. They're closed on Tuesdays which I found kind of odd, but at least they're open on Sunday and Monday! We ordered the following: -Palata -Ginger Salad -Burmese-Indian Rice -Pumpkin shrimp stew -Garlic noodles with shrimp YUP! There was a little Burmese feast goin' on at that table and I loved everything about it! First to arrive was the ginger salad. Although it tasted fresh, this was the one item that I enjoyed the least. To be fair, we went with this over a traditional tea leaf salad because I don't like tea salad at all. I know... I'm a weirdo. It's just too damn bitter my taste. We compromised and settled on the ginger salad instead. I'll admit that it tasted way better than the tea leaf salads that I've had and it was extremely fresh. It was just too ginger-y for my taste, buy my friend really enjoyed it! The palata tasted perfect! It had a nice buttery taste and a flaky consistency that made it feel like it was melting in my mouth. The garlic noodles with shrimp was a little crispier than I had expected, but the culmination of fresh garlic, onions, and shrimp over the noodles was like a match made in Heaven. The Burmese-Indian Rice was absolutely fantastic! What initially looked to be bland was actually bursting with a ton of Burmese and Indian flavors and spices and came cooked to a tee. And last but not least; the pumpkin shrimp stew! Holy mutha of GAWD! THAT thang right there... was SMACKIN, boo! Mouthwatering flavors... MOUTHWATERING! By far my favorite plate of the night. This stew was of a semi-thick consistency and filled to the brim with the most succulent shrimp. I just looooved the taste of the subtle spices. Thinking about it now has me missing the taste of it. It was dayum GOOD! I would highly recommend that you get this. Service was great! We ended up staying until right before closing, but they didn't try to rush us out. I'm a huge fan of Burmese food (especially after falling in love with Burma Star and B-Star in SF... holla!) This review comes during the COVID-19 pandemic so my boyfriend and I decided that although it would have been amazing to dine-in, we would feel safer doing take-out (I guess that means we'll just have to come back again ;-)). First off... Parking. Like all places on King Street it was bad... luckily just as we were pulling up to the restaurant, someone was leaving their street parking stall. Score! Now on to the more important stuff... Food. Three words... Tea. Leaf. Salad. I am a huge fan. Dagon's Tea Leaf Salad lived up to all of my expectations and more. My boyfriend ordered their Spicy Chile Lamb and we split their Garlic Noodles with Tofu. I'm not a huge fan of spicy food but the lamb was tolerable for me. It was great and very generously portioned. We also got their Coconut Shrimp Curry and it was so creamy and yummy - none of their entrees came with rice but luckily we had some minute-jasmine rice at home. You can BYOB! If you forgot, there is 7-Eleven across the street. Burmese food is like Thai meets Indian. Second time coming here. My favorite dish is the Dagon tea leaf salad $11.99. So tasty, healthy and love the different textures. Baya kyaw (yellow split pea fritters) $7.99 for four. Nice crunch to it. Reminded me of a falafel. Their tea leaf fried rice $6.99 was a nice compliment to dinner. Also tried the Burmese-Indian rice $6.99. Super vibrant in color with bold spices, cinnamon, cardamom with some raisins. Careful not to eat the cardamon pod. They are really potent. Basil chicken stir fry $12.99. Quite tasty and cooked to perfection. Friends got the vegetarian version: eggplant basil $11.99. Burmese lamb curry with potatoes $15.99. That was okay, I felt meat wasn't as tender and dish could have used a little more salt. Okay, so food: 5 stars, no doubt. Spicy and delicious. We got the samusas, spicy lamb, and garlic noodles. We called in our order at 11ish, and the lady said the chefs were running a hit behind and pickup would be at 11:50 (no big deal)... unfortunately it wasn't ready until 12:15 so we ended up standing around for like 25 minutes which was a bit annoying. I remember wanting to try here as a high schooler, regularly reading but not daring, yet, to post on Yelp. Unfortunately I never tried Burmese food until I came across a Burmese sushi place in South Brooklyn, oddly located between a Chinese and Russian neighborhood, with a chatty owner who lived by my college. This was a very different experience from that--I came with a friend who refused to dine in at restaurants, so we not only had to wait for all our dishes to come out at once, but had to find a place to eat too, so take my views of the food with a grain of salt since they went through a ride from town to Hawaii Kai first. The menu has a lot of stuff, and since a lot was unfamiliar it took us a while to order, and the food came out in maybe twenty minutes--not the safest area to wait around but there's lots of places to wait at least, or smoke by the bathrooms in back. We tried two pretty well known Burmese dishes and two sort of random ones. The mohinga, which was what I had in Brooklyn, was pretty different. The noodles had coagulated by the time we ate them so they were kind of in chunks, and the soup was very thin, it kind of reminded me of a very savory ramen broth but fishier, it kind of reminded me of the sumo ramen shoyu broth if you added fish sauce. Pretty good but I recall the other one I had being pretty thick with chunky of stewed fish, also with some spicey chili thing--overall more fish would be nice but it still tasted good. The tea leaf salad, which my sister thought was ti leaf salad, was very interesting--many different tastes and textures. It had delicious pieces of garlic and crunchy, earthy dried green bean-esque things, with some salty peanuts (?) and fresh tomato and jalapeno. The tea leaf itself was kind of sour, kind of like the aftertaste of matcha but more earthy and tangy. Maybe an acquired taste, but it made the salad very refreshing. We also tried samosas which were tasty, kind of similar to a samosa with a wonton-skin type exterior and some mint in the fillings which was delicious, the mint and sweet-spicy sauce was a great combination. My favorite dish was probably the nan gyi dok--I can see myself craving it regularly. It came with thick and chewy noodles, kind of like udon but more eggy, with tender pieces of pork and a sauce that was kind of like a mix between brown gravy and like a thai curry. It tasted familiar and comforting--I think the texture of the noodles is vaguely Japanese and the sauce is kind of like cake noodle gravy. I'd definitely get this again. Absolutely worth every penny. Ordered the Burmese Samosas, Crispy Tofu, Burmese Beef Curry, Pumpkin Pork Stew with Veggie & Tofu Fried rice and a side of Nan. I have never had Burmese food before; this was a first and will go back to try other things from the menu. The Crispy Tofu was a game changer for me, I didn't like fried tofu growing up but this I devoured. The Samosas were good as well but it's best while it's still hot. The meats were tender and the flavors tied well with each other. The serving is good for 2-4 persons unless you want to take some home then it's perfect for 2. Your taste buds are gonna be in for a wild ride. The dishes at Dagon are like a chameleon, it's crunchy and savory, then it's tender and spicy and everything in between. They focus a lot on spices, and I'm not just talking salt and pepper, you basic babies. My all-time favorite thing to order here is the dagon tea leaf salad. This is the version that's a tad spicy. I also really enjoyed the lamb biryani and the chili chicken. They have a vegetarian menu as well so everyone is happy. Back in SF there was a Burmese place that had a cult following and people talked about it pretty much the whole time I participated in Yelp North Bay. My friend here told me about Dagon so I bookmarked it and this week we made a dinner reservation for super bowl sunday and made it happen. Finding it was a little hard, but we got parked in their awkwardly slotted parking alley, and made our way in. The interior was bright and friendly, and despite being half an hour early for our reservation, we were seated immediately. The menu looked great, but we opted for the Appetizer Sampler ($9.99), the Coconut Curry Chicken ($12.99), the Garlic Noodles with tofu ($11.99), and for dessert the Faluda ($5.99). I was surprised at how quickly we were served the appetizer, and literally seconds after it dropped, the entrees arrived. The appetizers were good, I was most excited for the potato samosa, but it ended up not being my favorite. The fried spring rolls were decent and the lentil fritters were very good but the tofu squares were by far the best. They all came with a spicy sauce and a more sweet sauce, both of which paired nicely. Garlic and noodles are always good choices in my book, but together they are unstoppable! I could have eaten the whole order of this by myself, but sadly, I was sharing (haha!). The crispy garlic with the soft noodles was such a home run, I can't wait to eat it again. Coconut curry chicken was very good as well, with an impossibly savory sauce and well-seasoned meats. The biggest surprise hit for me was dessert. I didn't recognize either dish, but I opted for the one that had the most going on and hoped for the best. What arrived was a huge scoop of ice cream over a coconut tapioca, which topped rosewater infused mochi and fruits. This was hands down what I want to eat every time I come here, it was incredible. Biggest downside was parking, especially maneuvering getting out of the lot which looks like it should be one way, but makes you play chicken with whomever is coming the other way. What a mess. Prices were surprisingly low for the very high quality and large portion sizes, the place was clean, and the service was fast and friendly. This spot is great for good food in a casual setting. We came in on a Saturday night, and brought our own wine to enjoy with dinner (the restaurant allows BYOB!) Food: Started with sambusas for the table, and they allowed us to add one extra since we were a party of 5 and the usual serving is 4. They were so good! Hot, crispy, and really fresh potato and onion filling inside. Came with a sweet and slightly spicy sauce which went well. Then for mains, we got the lamb curry and garlic noodles with chicken. The flavor of the lamb curry was very good, had a lot of flavors similar to Indian cuisine. We ordered it with coconut rice, which is actually more of a pilaf than the coconut rice I normally have gotten from other restaurants in the past. The garlic noodles had a nice flavor, but could have been hotter. We really enjoyed the flavors, but thought that the food could have been spicier. Came here on a Sunday for dinner expecting to be wowed. It was good. Maybe I was expecting too much. 1. The service was somewhat disappointing. We had a party of 8. Felt like they just wanted us out. The thing is, there were empty tables available and no one waiting to be seated. Weren't friendly. Didnt crack a smile. 2. The food was average. We ordered both tea leaf salads. One was supposed to be made at our table but they didn't. Not a huge deal but little disappointing as I was looking forward to it. I think the best dish we had was their fried tofu. 3. Parking was easy. We lucked out. Was surprised that there weren't any open metered parking on the street on a Sunday at 5pm but that's not their fault. I feel like Burmese food is highly underrated, which is sad bc after Dagon, I definitely need more of it in my life. I always know I'm off to a good start when I have a hard time deciding what I want just because there are so many items I want to try! I'm relatively picky, so it's usually pretty easy for me to zero in on a dish I want - not here, here I wanted everything. My family and I eventually settled on getting the Burmese fish curry with salmon, samosas, and the tea leaf salad. LOVED EVERYTHING. The fish curry was super flavorful and the salmon was plentiful, samosas were perfectly crispy with just the right filling to pastry(?) ratio, and the tea leaf salad included a fresh blend of ingredients that worked together amazingly. If anything, I do feel like the curry could be spicier, but it was delicious as is as well. I really do love alllll types of curry, but Burmese may be topping that list after experiencing Dagon. Highly, highly recommend coming here if you're looking for some comfort food - after all, how could you go wrong with options that include noodles, curry, samosas, etc. Parking can be a pain, depending on the day/time so def plan ahead if you're looking to eat in. Food is still great and the taste is amazing. Mango chicken, beef kebat, Dagon tea leaf salad, garlic noodle are just a few of my go to items. Food is 5 stars all the way... The reason this time for my 3 star review is the way I was checked out. I did take out and first of all the prices have gone up ($2-3 per dish) as with most restaurants so I wasn't super surprised but the menu photos on yelp don't reflect that yet. So keep that in mind. Second, the issue that got me to be somewhat upset is when I picked up my takeout they use this new credit card pad thing and the waitress rings it up then prompts you to finish "checking out." Well after the card is run the next screen is an option for 20%, 25% or 30% (yeah you read that right 30%!!!!) TIP. I honestly didn't see an option for "no tip" since 20%+ for takeout is ridiculous, 10-15% max. So my $39 takeout turned into $47 for two dishes and an order of rice. Ouch. That's two meals worth of food so $47/2= $23.50 When I look at it like that it's not worth it... Next time I'm paying cash so I don't have to deal with that BS. read more

Hadn't been here in years and decided to celebrate signing a lease for my new office today! Ended up having the delicious Dagon tea leaf salad, and the lamb curry masala. A couple scoops of jasmine rice rounded everything out perfectly. Also it was incredibly hot today so we really appreciated the very cold yet ice cube free water that was refilled at least four or five times as we sat and enjoyed our meal. I ate here for lunch with a friend who has been to many Burmese restaurants in California, and he thought Dagon deserved three stars. Since I am not a Burmese cuisine connoisseur, and Dagon for now is the only Burmese restaurant in Honolulu, I will give it an automatic extra star. I was a big fan of the Tea Leaf Salad, my favorite dish of the three we ordered. I like the crunchiness of the lettuce and nuts, along with the unique flavor of the tea leaf. This isn't a salad you will be able to find at other restaurants on Oahu, so you have to come to Dagon to try it! We also ordered the Burmese Fish Curry (salmon) and the Basil Eggplant & Tofu. My friend thought these two dishes were a bit sweet. I did not taste any sweetness, but they weren't particularly unique to me. I have tasted similar dishes at Thai and Chinese restaurants. Towards the end of our meal we saw a huge cockroach that walked over to our table before heading to the back of the restaurant. I've read other reviews about a cockroach issue at Dagon, and it should be addressed by the owners. Having the restaurant completely cockroach free might be a challenge (it's Hawaii after all), but hiring a pest control service that fumigates the restaurant every 2-3 months might at least get rid of the large ones from regularly making an appearance while people are eating. read more

Dagon was a lovely experience, we were sure to make reservations as seating is limited and this is a popular place. Parking was available on the street with no problem either. Our waitress and hostess ( same ) checked our vax cards and IDs and got us seated she was attentive and got us water and drinks right away. We had plenty of time to look over the menu and make our decisions but unfortunately this is where things started to slow down a bit. She still did a great job but she was the only one working which seems to be the case in a lot of places these days. No biggie we weren't pressed for time but some small irritations with getting some of the items. The food was all cooked and prepared very well and tasted great, the portions we great too. I'm no Burmese expert but everything seemed very authentic and we will definitely go back again and would highly recommend Dagon to friends and family. read more

We told them it was our first time and owner came out and explained the menu to us himself. This past summer I have recently discovered Burmese food and there is really no looking back! I believe that Dagon is the sister restaurant of Rangoon (located in downtown). Dagon is conveniently located right across from Puck's Alley off of University. Food: For two people we shared 2 items - the Green Tea Leaf Salad and the Lamb Curry. Both of these items were very delicious. The tea leaf salad is an absolute must in my book. The unique combination of textures and flavors makes for a salad like no other. I especially love the garlic chips and peanuts, which add a lot of crunch! The Lamb curry dish had potatoes and was surprisingly more mild than I expected. Good for someone who doesn't like extremely strong flavors. Service/Price/Ambiance: Service was friendly and fast. The price for dishes are pretty reasonable considering the quality of the dishes - about $14-19 a dish. Ambiance has a casual feel, yet can still make for a nice date night. read more
