They've definitely stepped up the customer service. I think they were just ridiculously understaffed before. Now, they answer the phone, are nice on the phone and in person, food was ready fairly quickly. HUGE improvement. Did take out b/c had to work through lunch... A co-worker and I wanted something different for lunch, so I made a reservation at Rangoon Burmese Kitchen on the corner of Nuuanu and Pauahi Streets. We hadn't been here in years; it was time to find out if they still had superior Burmese cuisine. Unfortunately, the bar was closed, and they didn't have hot tea so we had to drink cool water (not my idea of a refreshment). Rangoon has an extensive menu, so it took us a while to pick out entrees. We started with Vegetarian Samosas ($15). Crispy triangular "pillows" contained a mix of potato, red onion, green peas, and mint, spiced with masala. It came with sweet garlic, chili, and fish sauce for dipping. Yum! We shared Pork Belly with Mustard Greens ($19), Garlic Fried Rice ($18), Burmese Curry with Potatoes ($20) and added lamb ($3), and a plate of Platha ($5). The fried rice contained lup cheong, which puzzled us ... However, it was tasty and rich, not dry. The Platha were delicious, especially when dipped into the curry. My friend put lamb atop one of his and created a sort of Burmese Tostada. The only dish we didn't bond with was the pork belly. We are still trying to figure out where the mustard greens were. To us it was like a Chinese pork stir fry with onions. It didn't match the other dishes at all. The total, including tip came to $100.33. We ended up with three containers of leftovers ... Enough to make someone a nice dinner. Rating: 3.75 stars, due to the limited refreshments and the pork belly dish. This was my very first time here at Rangoon and I was pleasantly surprised. It was in the very spot one of my favorite restaurants used to be!! Walking in and looking around you can see that someone took some time to not only invest in the decor, but give an experience like feel. Having traveled to other countries, i love learning new cultures and it felt very much like that here at Rangood. The service was so attentive and sweet. Staff from the front door to the end of the restaurant were all helpful and kind. Gave our large group a warm and wemcomingbfeeling. Ok, ok, lets get down to the reason youre here, the food! This restaurant was plugged to me by a friend who likes to be worldly and adventurous (read: trying different cultural cuisines), descriptors reflecting a personality which may very well be a discussion for another day. Nonetheless, this friend steered us in the right direction as the food here stayed true to the culinary standard of Southeast Asia. My party of four ordered the platha (flatbread), the pineapple fried rice, the nan gyi thoke, the garlic noodle, the myeik pan fried noodle, the Burmese pumpkin stew, and the Rangoon tea leaf salad. All of these items were quite delicious, and also our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. These dishes, however, become the type of leftovers you might argue over. The nan gyi thoke was delightful and comforting, and we naturally had no leftovers of this. Myeik pan fried noodles tasted to me like a Burmese analogue to pad Thai, with its familiar taste profile. Everything else was also delicious and very much worth trying. The most difficult part of eating here was deciding which items to try. Let's talk about the most surprising recommendation I've got On-Island! My co-worker recommended I come to Rangoon because I told her I was looking to try something new. The vibe when you walk in is very casual with different genres of music playing throughout the meal. We were greeted by our server, Anna, who was super attentive throughout the meal. We ordered the Mango Salad, Myeik Pan Fried Noodles, Pork Belly with Mustard Greens and a side of coconut rice. We ordered thinking we would have enough to take home later but the flavors were so good, we ended up eating everything! The mango salad was so refreshing, with a sweet and salty kick with every bite, the fried noodles were savory and fresh with a hint of squeezed lemon on top, and the pork belly with mustard greens and side of coconut rice was my winner of the night. The flavors were so unique!! It's been a couple days since we visited and I still can't get the salad dressing flavor out of my head. This was the spot that was picked for my bro-in-law's birthday. Only a few of the 7 of us had dined here before. It was my first time. We made a reservation which I would recommend if you're going at normal meal times. Lots of good flavors in every bite. Our least favorite and probably the only thing we wouldn't order again was the Lemongrass Prawns. They are a whole shrimp which isn't an issue. I don't mind separating the head from the tail and they were large but we didn't like the sauce that covered them. I LOVED the eggplant curry. The eggplant melted in my mouth and the curry was delicious. I ate the leftovers for lunch that week and got to relive the experience. The salads were both good and fresh. The calamari was nice. Our other favorite was the Myek pan fried noodle. It had shrimp, chicken and calamari in it but it was just so full of flavor. If I lived closer that would be a meal I'd eat weekly. We went in at 5:00pm on a Saturday. They only had about four tables full. We didn't have a reservation but there were tons of empty tables. We sat at the bar since they said they were fully booked up all night. They turned multiple people away. We were there for about 40 minutes. They never filled the majority of the tables, they remained empty. Now on to the food, the calamari should be the star on its own, especially since there was no dipping sauces. They had grilled peppers and onions with a slice of lemon. The lemon saved the calamari. It was completely flavorless without it. I brought my own salt in case they didn't have that available, which they didn't. I ordered the Mango Curry Chicken. It had no mango, it tasted exactly like Chinese Sweet & Sour Chicken. My husband ordered Myek Chicken. It was made with very cheap pasta and again, was almost void of flavor. The bartender was amazing. Friendly and delightful and working very hard, but her female coworker with black hair was dismissive and frigid cold. I feel they are trying to be "the place to be" with an upscale vibe by turning people away and/or having people without reservations sit at the bar. If your food isn't good enough to actually make this restaurant what it thinks it is, it's just a bit sad. I would not go back or recommend Rangoon Burmese Kitchen. read more

The crispy tofu with salad stuffing was very delicious and refreshing fried tofu stuffed with cabbage and other goodies. The tea salad was another one of my favorites, fermented tea leaves tossed with cabbage, some peanuts. Fried garlic and tomatoes was such a refreshing dish. The vibes inside were mellow and relaxed, there was no pressure to order or eat quickly. The drinks were strong and tasty. We didn't have reservations but were seated almost immediately on a Friday evening (maybe the first warning sign?). I recommend making reservations if you have a group larger than 2 people. I like that Rangoon is a larger restaurant that still feels cozy. Maybe it's the decor or the fact that they always seat parties kinda close together by the door, but whatever it is, I like it. The servers here are really nice and friendly. They helped us choose cocktails that were delicious and relatively inexpensive. I came with three other people and we got a variety of things to share. I really liked the pumpkin stew, the myeik pan fried noodles and the samosas. I definitely want to come back to try other things on the menu. It all looks so good! There is street parking, but it can get difficult to find parking if there is an event going on nearby. I also like that they were open pretty late. Room temperature tap water served in a reuseable bottle is unsanitary and classless. Made me wonder how the kitchen looked like. I suggest recommending bottle sparkling or still water like finer restaurants! Tea leaf salad was refreshing but lacked taste. Burmese sumosa was overfried and greasy. Garlic noodles were hard, bit undercooked and lacked garlic flavor. Pumpkin stew tasted like it was reheated, coconut rice was perfect. Biriyani was nicely presented and tasted the best out of all the dishes. We had a lot of left overs but server did not help box them like at Dagon. Server was not very friendly and hospitable at all. Bill was $132 with 20% tip cause I am gracious however I will never return! Dagon, under the same ownership is better in every aspect of my dining experience. read more

The basil with beef and garlic noodles with beef had great flavors but the beef was tough and seemed overcooked. That's the main reason for the loss of a star. We went a couple days after Valentine's Day, which clearly cleaned them out. We initially wanted the basil with chicken, garlic noodles with pork, and coconut rice. Overall average experience here. The parking situation was not great. We had to drive around a couple of times before finding a metered street parking spot. They only had one high chair, which was being used by another family when we visited. We luckily grabbed it when that family left but had to deal with a wandering toddler until then. They have a large selection of vegetarian options and our waitress helped us by selecting a few more popular options. Yelpers raved about the tea leaf salad so we decided to try it and it was delicious and unique! It comes with crispy beans and a mix of many vegetables. We also shared coconut curry with tofu and rangoon fried rice with veggie and tofu. The portion sizes are large. I thought the dishes were overall average.
