I am dumbfounded by the negative reviews lately. We came with a group of five and had a very sweet and funny server, her name (according to our receipt was Khun S). She was very friendly, patient, and offered answers to our questions. She brought the food out quickly and explained everything. She was very attentive and made sure we were happy with all dishes. The food was yummy too. We had samusas, fried tofu, Dagon tea salad, mango salad, shan noodles, pumpkin stew, fried rice, and mango curry. A ton of food for the five of us and it was only $119! It could have had more samosas and less of the fritters as well as a different sauce. Good dish to share for the table. - garlic noodles with tofu (4/10): nothing spectacular about these. There's no strong garlic flavor. The crispy tofu nuggets are quite dry and needed to be soaked in the sauce. - coconut vegetable curry (8/10): this was one of the better dishes that we ordered. It came to the table piping hot. It had a good mix of vegetables with broccoli, eggplant, and peppers which were also cooked well and not mushy. The base itself was creamy and filled with warm spices. - nan gyi dok tofu (10/10): my favorite dish of the lot! It combines coconut curry and rice noodles into one. Must order WOULD I GO BACK? Yes. My vegetarian guest never had Burmese food and I haven't been here for awhile so we came in around 7pm. Restaurant was full with only 2 table left so we sat ourselves at the closest one to us. The server greeted us with menu and a water carafe. Looked at the menu and ask the server for suggestions. Started off with the vegetarian egg rolll and tea salad. The tea salad was amazing. It had so many texture, crunchy and crisp with a very light dressing giving it a totally different taste than any other salad. When I was lucky to bite into the garlic chips, the nutty pungent was instaneous adding to the flavor of the already great dish. The vegetarian eggs roll were also wonderful. Lightly fried but not greasy at all. It was steaming hot served with a sweet sauce which was good. After we were done, she bought out the food all at one time just how I like it. Vegetarian curry was generous portions of large cut of veggies simmered to perfection. Veggies weren't overcooked, with a slight hint of curry. Eat it with the coconut rice and you will smile. It's like taking a bite of almond joy! Lol I had to disappoint my friend by adding lamb to my pumpkin stew. The stew tasted like my mom's cooking. The meat was fork tender, and the stew was hot and a so flavorful. Definitely, paired great with the biranyi rice. The girl at the cashier packed salad in a separate bag away from the hot food. Thoughtful and nice. Started with the sambusas. They are deep fried I realize but they shouldn't ooze out oil when I hold them, right? The filling was mostly bland. Burmese food boasts of flavors which are definitely missing. Got the tea leaf salad. I order tea leaf salad whenever at a Burmese place and I love this dish. It was bland. Lacked seasoning. And the tea leaf mixture was very bitter. The Nan Gyi Dok (with chicken) had very little chicken to begin with. The addition of crispy noddles isn't bad. Rice noodles are a tad thick. It isn't a bad dish per se but I was hoping to get wah more flavors than what I got. The chilli lamb was nice and spicy. But the lamb pieces could be juicier and better quality. They were very rubbery. There was a ton of spices and so the heat kinda made up for it. They asked what rice I wanted with the lamb and gave me options of white , brown , or Indian flavored. I opted for the Indian flavored. It's pulao/ish and costs 7$. They used basmati grains I think (or some long grain rice). Tbh the lamb and rice were our favorites, relatively speaking. We REALLY enjoyed our meal at Dagon. This was one of the locations we tried when indoor dining was once again allowed in October and it was such a fantastic choice :) FOOD: We ordered the spicy chili beef, garlic noodles, homestyle fried rice, and their palata (pan-fried multi-level bread). I've never had Burmese food in my life and I loved every single thing I ate this night. Especially the palata - everyone must order this because it will blow your mind. SERVICE: We visited Dagon on a Saturday night around 6:30 pm. Thankfully, there was a table available - we had no idea we should've made reservations but we got lucky this night. They only had one server working this night and it was a little difficult to place our order, ask for more water, order more food, and ask for the check. This was the only thing that turned us off; the server was friendly but she just seemed so preoccupied taking phone orders, bussing tables, taking orders, seating guests, etc. LOCATION: Dagon is a small location with less than 10 tables right now. I have been looking for a good Burmese restaurant in HI. Dagon was just ok. The tea leaf salad and samusa were good. The chicken pumpkin stew had two small pieces of pumpkin and the flavor was watered down. We were urged to order the pineapple fried rice which was not good, (I should have followed my instinct and declined!) The service wasn't great: friendly enough, but not polite and didn't seem to care. The price point is way too high for the food quality, ambiance, and service. We will not go back. read more

I recently tried Rangoon Burmese Kitchen and decided to try Dagon, their sister restaurant. There is a lot of overlap between the menus, and I ended up buying almost all of the same things I had at Rangoon. My friends and I came here for dinner around 5, but free street parking doesn't begin until 6. We went inside to exchange coins, but the lady told us to just park on the side for free. There are a few stalls in the little driveway between Kokua Market and Dagon. The dishes here are made to share, so we ordered three entrees, bread, and an appetizer. This was way too much food for three people, so we ended up taking home leftovers. Here's what we got: Burmese pumpkin stew - super delicious, loved all the vegetables Palatha - I don't know how to describe this, but it is the best bread in the world. It's kind of like naan, but it's really thin, crispy, and buttery. We got it as our carb for the stew, but it's great to snack on on its own. Garlic noodles - the flavor of these noodles were amazing. Loved the amount of garlic on it and the garnish. The texture of the noodles was also great. Tea leaf salad - when I went to Rangoon a few weeks ago, everyone liked this the most, but I couldn't get myself to like it. However, I gave it another chance and really liked it. I just needed to pick out the jalapeños. There's a lot of crunch and texture to the salad. Appetizer sampler - this came with everything and was pretty good. The spring rolls were probably my favorite - it was flavorful and came fresh out of the kitchen Our waitress was friendly, and I'm pretty sure she was working at the other restaurant too. The only questionable thing was the water. I don't know why mine tasted funny, but my friends said theirs was fine. I love this restaurant and will definitely be coming here more often! Each weekend during this strange year, we look forward to trying new restaurants for take-out. Recently, we finally tried Dagon, the only Burmese restaurant maybe in the entire state. Burmese food shares flavors with its neighbors; if you like Indian and Thai, you'll probably like Burmese. We had delivery and tried three dishes: a red curry fish, creamy chicken curry, vegetarian spring rolls, and plenty of rice. The flavors are complex and delicious; it was fun to have two very different dishes. I absolutely loved the chili sauce that accompanied the rolls and used that on most of my food. There were some negatives to our experience, but they won't stop us from ordering again. I felt the portion sizes were very small for the price. As the food is rich and flavorful, we had leftovers, but they didn't stay fresh due to the additions in the sauce. I feel like the experience would be much better actually eating at the restaurant, and finishing the food fresh. Hopefully we'll have the opportunity to do that soon. In the meantime, if you're looking for something different, Dagon is a great place to try. read more

COVID-ERA takeout review... I headed here in the pouring rain. It was the perfect weather for a warm, flavorful Burmese meal. Chicken Pumpkin Stew Very mild, lightly spiced, TONS of chicken thigh pieces, mine only had a couple bits of kabocha squash. Not sure a lot of people would complain about that. A touch oily for me (probably because I got so much meat!) but not enough to be an actual problem... Dagon Tea Leaf Salad One of two tea leaf salads they sell, this one had a much vaguer menu description as a "traditional mixture." Having had the other one before, I gave this one a try. It was already tossed and much more funky and garlicky. Still that delicious, bitter, sharp flavor and all the glorious crunch of the nuts and lentils. It was even still crunchy when I ate the leftovers the next day. Yum. Coconut Rice! It's not listed on some versions of the menu but this was the standout of my meal. I came here for the first time pre-COVID with a friend and was anxious to share it with my family but they were not too excited. Finally it was my turn to pick our Sunday take out so I choose here and had my list ready. It was a long list but they suggested more dishes so we added on 3 or 4 more dishes (we like leftovers). The meal was delicious and my family insisted unanimously that they deserve 5 stars. Listed are our favorites - coconut curry with beef- beef was so tender and the curry rich and delicious kind of a mix of beef stew and curry. We will probably do a double order next time Vegetable coconut curry- for our vegetarian. First time trying out this place and it's pretty good! They have a similar menu to Rangoon. The food for the most part were tasty. The only downside from the experience is they did not have chicken and pork for any of the noodles we want to ordered. We tried out the Burmese curry with lamb (4/5), pumpkin stew with pork (5/5), garlic noodle with tofu (4/5), Shan noodles with tofu (5/5), tea life salad (3/5), and the split pea fritters (2/5). I did not like the tea life salad that much. It was quite bland. The split pea fritters were too dry, kinda a disappointment. The parking situation is only street parking. read more

Went to Dagon for dinner on 10/13/2023 and our party of 6 was charged $189.25 which included a 20% tip. Food and service was good until I paid the bill and did not know that tip was collected TWICE! The server did not inform us that gratuity was automatically added to our tab before my credit card was charged. The restaurant uses a handheld credit card reader that flashed the tip screen for less than a second, bypassing the tip option so I thought tip was not included. The bill was not provided before hand and I did not receive the receipt for the charge by text until we left the restaurant. We proceeded to give the waitress a $40 cash tip which she happily accepted not informing us that tip was already included. She basically got a $70 tip on a $152 tab! Disappointed that the server did not inform us before accepting the cash tip knowing she imposed 20% gratuity on the tab! read more

First of all the parking is street metered before 6pm or try the alley way which is shared with a apartment building about 7 stalls, but the customer parking sign is graffiti out! Server that night was definitely tired or not in a good mood but did her best to put on a smile towards the end. The food is hands down Burmese tasty and my favorite was the smooth palates bread with pineapple fried rice and curry. The seating was a little close and can't help but hear your neighbors chats at times. I requested music be changed to traditional music like Burmese right ? apparently the Burmese owner likes jamming island style music that whole night... kind out of place vibe. Before this whole stay-at-home order happened, I was challenging myself to try different restaurants and cuisines than what I was used to. I invited my cousin and her boyfriend to dinner and we picked Dagon! The pictures on yelp looked delicious and luckily we're a bunch thats down to try new things! I made a reservation a few days before we went - I would recommend reservations as it was really crowded when we went! Dagon is located across Sushi King & Glazers Coffee complex. They have a few parking stalls hidden in the back. If you're lucky, you'll find a few when you turn right into a dead end alley thats connected to these apartments. They have reserved stalls maybe half way through the driveway. Unfortunately, when we got there, parking was impossible to get in that tiny lot. I found a nearby street stall and my cousin parked at the building with Raising Canes. I arrived early, so I checked in but it seemed like all tables were full. The servers were really nice, but I was a bit annoyed that they didn't have my table ready for me. We had to wait (not long), but I would've expected that they would have kicked out the party before us so that our table would be ready when we got there. Honestly, for a Thursday night it was super crowded, even at 7:30 PM. Now onto the good part - the food! We started with the burmese tea salad and an appetizer platter. The appetizer platter came with a burmese samosa, vegie spring rolls, fried tofu, and a yellow split pea fritter. Since some things only came with one or two pieces each, it was hard to split three ways. But a nice starter to try different things! Not sure if I would order again, but it was a nice introduction to our meal. I think my favorite dish was the Dagon Tea Leaf salad. I would go there just for this dish. It's unique, filled with flavor, healthy, and did I say delicious?! The portion is nice and big, and it's really just a great dish. This is an absolute must at Dagon. For our mains, we ordered: Tofu Fried Rice, Palata (pan fried bread kind of like a fried pita but lighter), Pumpkin Pork Stew and the Burmese Lamb Curry. The fried rice was good - similar to a fried rice dish you can get anywhere with a slight different flair. It accompanied the curries really well. The bread was very oily. I think I would prefer a more dough-y bread to soak up all the sauce in the curry. Both curries were delicious but very meat heavy. The sauces were also very runny compared to Japanese curry. The lamb meat was so tender and the sauce was much more salty than the pumpkin dish. The pumpkin curry had a slightly sweeter taste and was a bit chunkier from the pureed pumpkin. I enjoyed both but I'd want to try others on the menu before deciding my favorite. We were stuffed at the end of the meal and had some leftovers to take home with us. To finish our meal, we got one of each of the desserts on the menu - the Sago Pearls in Coconut milk and the Burmese Faluda. The desserts reminded me of a Southeast Asian dish. If you like pumpkin, I would get the Sago Pearls in milk! It was just the right amount of sweetness as the pumpkin counterbalanced all the sugar and sweets in the dish. Overall, I would say our first time to Dagon was successful! It is BYOB, so next time you can see me there with a bottle of wine! I'll be back to try more dishes! read more

Been to the main restaurant downtown that was unforgettable so decided to come here. I always get the same thing, but it was awesome!! I was disappointed that they hired a waitress with poor customer service skills... i've seen her at the Indian restaurant down the street who was just as cold and rude then. Just one of those people who don't seem happy and forget that they are the face of the restaurant they work at. I will most likely return for the food, but I sincerely hope that the owners take a close look at the tatted waitress with glasses.... Great food, unpleasant experience. read more

Deserving of 5 stars, I stopped in 2 times before writing up this review. Dagon is a Burmese restaurant that's been on King St for awhile now. Its one of those places that you always drive by but may not have stopped in. One night the girls and I wanted to try something different so we stopped in and so glad we did the next time we brought our men in just so we could order more food! We also dragged in some of our reluctant teenagers and they really enjoyed it too! I'd say Burmese food is a little similar to Thai and Indian food fused together, it was so flavourful and you can control if you would like it mild or spicy. I was able to call ahead and reserve a table for 9 when we ate there. IT's BYOB! After coming here 2x and eating a ton of food, I would highly recommend the Dagon Tea Leaf Salad, Coconut Curry Beef over a side of coconut rice, and palata. The teenagers really enjoyed the pineapple fried rice, garlic noodles and basil chicken. Everything that we ordered was delicious but the sauce in the Coconut Beef curry was amazing and was mopped up with rice and Palata till the bowl was empty! It was our first time dining at Dagon & had various dishes. The tea leaf salad and palaef ? (bread ) stood out and were the best and amazingly delicious. However, it would be nice if the ambiance/condition of restaurant were cleaner instead of smelling old & mildew odor . And if there was more available parking . Difficult to find street parking in that area and there's only few parking stalls in very small , one way parking lot . The menu posted on Yelp needs to be updated to reflect entire menu not just partial . And it would be great if they were open earlier instead of 5pm - especially for takeouts. read more

Wow really delicious food! I've never had Burmese food before so I wasn't sure what to expect, but a friend of mine wanted to try out this restaurant. We went on a Friday night at 6 PM. It's a small restaurant so reservations are a must. Parking is a bit crazy here. The restaurant has only two designated stalls and there is not much street parking. Good luck finding a stall! Now onto the food. We ordered the Dagon tea leaf salad, garlic noodles with shrimp, beef curry, samosas, and jasmine rice. Everything was really tasty. What a surprise! My favorite was probably the Dagon tea leaf salad which was definitely different than anything I've ever had. Really a nice mix of different flavors, I don't know how else to describe it. It's also very crunchy. The garlic noodles with shrimp and beef curry were pretty good, but I also really enjoyed the samosas. Service was friendly, but a bit slow. Once the food comes out, nobody comes back to check on you and we had to ask to have our water refilled. Our waitress then asked us if we wanted to try their signature dessert, which we agreed to. We waited and waited for the desert, about 20 minutes later she told us that they didn't have any more dessert which seem like a long time to wait for her to find out that they didn't have any left. At the time, there was no sign on the door so we peeked inside. There were people inside that saw us, but there was an employee that was outside to let us know that they were closed for lunch that day... I was disappointed because we drove all the way from the west side to eat here, but ended up going to their sister restaurant. Came back for dinner and got a bunch of things. My brother ordered the coconut beef curry, which he liked the best out of the 3 entrees. I think it this a good curry for someone wanting to step out of their comfort zone a bit. My bf got the pumpkin pork stew because he couldn't get enough of it from when we went to Rangoon. This stew is a MUST try. Different from what we usually get, but it was a good random entree the first time we tried it (thumbs up). We never tried a fish curry so I ordered the Burmese fish curry. The fish didn't have taste, I thought the curry was going to be more tomatoey...bleh. I'm glad we tried it, but will probably never order that again. We'll just stick to pork and beef. Of course we got the Dagon tea leaf salad, sooo good. Pretty much the only salad I like. Lol. We also got the pineapple fried rice. Pretty good, has a little tang to it. Fried crispy and stuffed with salad. Refreshing! We did get two kinds of shrimp and the Chile shrimp is deliciously spicy (we got medium spice). Garlic noodles are addictive. Here is the low down: Parking: Street parking on King Street or right before their restaurant there is a side street with two stalls. Lots of street parking though so no problem. While looking for a place to eat in the entertainment book, and because there was an empty metered stall, we decided to give this place a try , and I'm glad we did. Lamb kebat - 5 stars - $14.99 I loved the mixture of strong spices in the sauce of the lamb. This was the best dish of what we ordered. It says spicy, and it had a nice slight burn in my mouth, which was perfectly mixed with the sauce. Will definitely order this again. Coconut curry beef - 4 stars - $14.99 - the curry had a different delicious flavor to it, with large pieces of stewed meat, but the meat was a bit chewy and hard. Mango shrimp - 4 stars - for $15.99, the shrimp was fresh, and the mango sauce was extraordinarily fruity, but it didn't match the other bold flavored dishes. !Burmese Indian rice - 5 stars - for $6.99, this bowl of colorful rice was flavored with cinnamon, peanuts, peppercorn, and other ingredients that tasted it very flavorful. Palatable - 3 stars - i didn't think this flat oily 4 inch pancake tasting flat bread cut into 4 pieces was worth $4. Service - 4 stars - service was a bit slow, but the woman and what looked like her daughter, were very nice. Waters were filled. To think that I only came across Dagon after searching for "vegetarian" or "mostly vegetarian" on Yelp... preposterous, I know! I've had Burmese chicken biryani before, but nothing could have quite prepared me for how impressive Dagon was. We started off with two appetizers: the Burmese samusas and golden fried tofu. Wow! If those were the only dishes we ordered, I would have been completely set to give 5/5 stars. The samusas are incredibly flavorful and crunchy. The tofu was stuffed with sprouts and other various veggies, topped with a mild, sour dressing. So interesting and tasty. For entrees, we ordered "family style," and tried the Pan Tay noodles, eggplant salad, Burmese-Indian rice, coconut rice, and a coconut-based curry with an assortment of vegetables (broccoli, onion, carrot, bell pepper, etc.). While everything was delicious, I especially enjoyed the eggplant salad. When I saw thinly sliced veggies within an almost glob-like eggplant mixture, I was quite shocked at the appearance. Don't be fooled... that strange salad is one of the best salads I have ever had! And I'm really not a salad person. It was a little savory, a little sour, and a little spicy... such mild flavors that worked in harmony. After I visited Dagon, I was telling everyone about the great meal I had there. The flavors were unlike anything I've ever tasted before. If you've never had authentic Burmese food, I would highly recommend Dagon. Love this place and come here all the time! They are usually very consistent with great flavors. Musts for me are the burmese tea leaf salad and chili chicken (or shrimp). Usually get 3-4 things and do family style so I've tried a lot on the menu... I havent run into something that wasnt good! read more

I went here for the first time trying Burmese food to celebrate my birthday with some friends. We went on a Friday night around 7pm, which was super busy and street parking was limited, since there was no parking lot. I definitely recommend booking a reservation ahead of time. At the time, there was one server, I went ahead to write down the order on my phone on my "notes app" so it would be easier for them. Service: Quick Parking: Limited Reservations: Highly Recommended I definitely recommend getting the appetizer sampler, dagon tea leaf salad, crispy tofu with salad filling, Burmese fish curry with red snapper, and pineapple fried rice with shrimp. (*** = favorites) Apptizier sampler ($14): Samusa, baya kyaw (pea fritter), vegetable spring roll, and golden fried tofu. Best for sharing with groups to try various things for some hot, fried food! - Dagon Tea Leaf Salad: So flavorful with a mix of sweet, citrusy, and mild spice that makes the salad very refreshing. Been here 5+ times now and things have gone downhill since my last review. My boyfriend and I went to celebrate his birthday and both ended up getting food poisoning. I became nauseous with stomach pain the next day and was sick all day and it hurt when I tried to eat anything. My boyfriend also had a stomach ache the next day and his nausea set in the day after. I got the tofu noodles which was a mistake. It tasted sour but I wasn't sure if that was how it's supposed to taste. My boyfriend tried some of my noodles and also said it tasted weird. Also the service has always been weird. The last time we came, it was empty except for one table and I asked to sit by the window but she made us sit in arms length of the only other table that was there. Also the salad didn't taste as good as it once did and got a lot smaller. I will not be coming back here. I am trying to get in contact about the food poisoning but there is no answer. read more

My family just loves this place. Hands down, our favorite is the Burmese pumpkin stew with pork. The onion, garlic, pumpkin and ginger really meld together into a wonderfully fragrant sauce. I wish I knew their secret to such a wonderful dish! We always get it with a side of paratha to dip into it. Other than that, we prefer the tea leaf salad to the Dagon tea leaf salad because it's slightly more refreshing and less salty. But both are fun salads! And the kauswe coconut chicken noodle soup is tasty and hard to find in Hawaii so we always order that here. Be sure to call ahead and reserve a table because the little space fills up quickly. read more

Not a clean environment. Has a small fly in my cup of water. The fly probably got in to the plastic cups. Tea salad was ok, wasn't as great as expected based on reviews All food was 6/10 and service was slow but it seemed like they were understaffed. We went on a Sunday night. [3.5 stars] Another type of cuisine in the books! Pretty healthy too! PARKING/LOCATION: Street parking. The restaurant is along South King Street near UH, so parking can be a headache. AMBIANCE/INTERIOR: Casual. The restaurant is a little cramped and can get noisy. FOOD/DRINK: BYOB! We brought a wine.. they provided us with a bottle opener and plastic (what?) wine glasses. We first ordered the tea leaf salad, with its constituent ingredients separated on the plate. The salad was mixed before us by the waiter. The salad tasted very good what with the diversity of toppings, but it was quite crunchy.. so much so that eating it was a bit of a jaw workout. We next ordered the samusas, which were delicious. My favorite dish of the night! The samusas were followed by the spicy chile lamb, which was HOT. I can usually tolerate spicy foods, but couldn't handle this dish. There was a decent amount of lamb, but the lamb was rather tough and chewy. We didn't order rice, so the potato filling of the samusas helped dull the spiciness of the lamb dish. SERVICE: The food took awhile. We finished the salad long before the samusas and spicy lamb were served. There was some confusion re the samusas so they had to redo our order, but we were surprised that even the lamb took some time. OVERALL: Pretty good. Service is super slow. Food was ok but nothing special. The flavors on the tea leaf salad were good and pineapple fried rice was good too. Fried tofu was ok and overhyped. Very dry and they don't have any good sauces to supplement the food. They don't have a spice scale so all the food is standard and a bit bland. For the wait and the money, this one can be skipped. read more

Pushed us to order more food. - Some pieces of the fried bread was burned black but she still served it to us. - Other dishes were just ok - No splitting of our bill I left feeling like I wish we chose a different place to eat. This place has gone way down since my last review 5 years ago. From roaches behind the pictures that will make a run for your plate, to unfriendly service and food that just tasted flavorless and nothing like before. We went again last Friday night and it was AMAZING. So amazing I forgot to take pics of half our food. It's BYOB! Score! There was 4 of us so we were able to get a few things (which I recommend so you can try more plates) and we did it family style. We got the tea life salad (amazing) for an appetizer. Also got coconut rice (pictured). We also got the chicken and fish Burmese curry. Both was super yummy. We had the option of cod or mahimahi for the fish curry and we chose cod. We also got a nan like flat bread which was great to dip in the curry. Last we got the garlic noodles. I would get every dish again. Can't wait to come back. Service was good. There's a bathroom outside around the corner. Parking is hard but we found street parking luckily! We've been to the sister restaurant Rangoon but we had a better experience here/ maybe cause it's byob lol read more
