Edamame
Chun M.

Boy, we hadn't been to Maile's in 15 years! It is at the east end of Oahu in a Hawaii Kai strip mall and we find ourselves here again. That previous time, we had stopped in for lunch and they had some really good lunch specials. I remember the Thai Loco Moco had really good flavor with ground pork (instead of beef) topped with a fried egg over rice. This time for dinner, the 3 of us over ordered because we came in time for happy hour, so got a few extra appetizers. The fried calamari was extra crispy with a thai chili dipping sauce. I was really surprised by the edamame. It's not just plain salted like at Japanese restaurants. This Thai style has a heavy garlic oyster sauce that was really tasty. The sauce would be great on the jasmine rice! The green papaya salad was refreshing but the spicy was a little much, even though I asked for medium heat. For entrees, our eyes again were bigger than our stomachs because the portions are generous. The Chicken Massaman Curry was not too spicy and I love drenching the sauce over jasmine rice. We also had the Thai Fried Rice with Shrimp and the Spicy Seafood Combo. The fried rice was great and the seafood combo did start very spicy but the heat built up to a good burn.

Having Thai lunch in Hawaii Kai. Was recommended to try this Thai restaurant by Costco. Walking in we where greeted right away and fitted. Ambiance is classy but yet comfortable because we where dressed in shorts. Ordered the red curry with sticky rice, spring rolls and the soy cheese fun. Red curry: Tasty and mild with coconut milk. Spring rolls: Came hot with roman lettuce, cucumber, mint and sauce. Crunchy and tasty. Just enough filling. Chow fun soy: Nice flavorful with broccoli. Pros: Alot of food and tasty. Cons: Kinda pricey. For just the two of us. Three dishes and two Thai coffees. Can out about $100 include tip. Would I go back? Maybe.

Pork Larb
Ken P.

We've been regular takeout customers at Maile's Thai Bistro and have always loved their food -- consistently flavorful and well-prepared. Unfortunately, our most recent order was completely different from what we've come to expect. We ordered the Thai lechon and the pork larb, both of which are normally excellent. This time, though, the lechon, the few pieces in the dish seemed breaded, with an oily, soft texture and almost no meat inside -- mostly fat -- and it lacked the usual sauce and flavor balance that make the dish so good. The pork larb, while looking similar, was extremely salty, watery, and missing its usual brightness and spice. It honestly tasted like a completely different recipe or chef. We're not asking for a refund -- just wanted to share this feedback in case something changed in the kitchen or preparation process. We really hope this was just an off day, because Maile's has always been one of our favorites, and we'd love to see it return to the quality we've known and enjoyed.

I got there probably around the last time I was able to be seated, but the staff were very friendly. The order did seem to take a little bit longer than I would've expected, but they were still pretty busy considering it was like an hour before closing. The Thai tea was nice and fresh + not overly sweet, the salad was so delicious, the drunken noodles were flavorful, and the sticky rice was soooo good. Would recommend and go back if I visit again.

Street parking can be a little tough to find depending on when you go, but there are designated parking spaces/structures nearby which made it manageable. Overall, a solid spot for Thai and Lao food, and I'd be happy to come back and try more from the menu.

Noodles were cooked fine, broth came out piping hot. Not that spicy but so rich in authentic flavor! Added their spice in the side and it was amazing! Generous portions of crispy pork (they pan fry it before), some meatballs, and fish balls. 9/10 Pork Pad Thai $17 - Same amazing crispy juicy pork. Noodles were incorrect/not typical. They use pho or the thin rice noodles for their pad thai. Despite that, the noodle texture was still good: chewy bouncy noodles that soaked up the sauce very well. This, however, will probably be my first and last visit. The place is cute enough, with a large back garden area where I chose to dine. Service was also great. I appreciate the little button at the table that I could click for service. The food, however, was mediocre at best. My friend and I ordered the pad Thai with tofu, ginger chicken, chicken satay, and pork larb. The pad Thai was the best dish, but it was very tomatoey, which I did not expect. The chicken with ginger had very little chicken. It was mostly julienned vegetables, including celery which I do not care for. The chicken satay was kinda dry and most certainly needed the peanut sauce to make it palatable. The larb was very dry with very bland flavor, served on one lettuce leaf and a wedge of cabbage. How am I supposed to eat that? All of it was quite disappointing, especially for the price point. As I was eating this meal I remembered the Thai food truck at the end of Ward, where Fisherman's Pier used to be. Now THAT was some good Thai food. I guess that was the best thing about this meal-remembering where I could get really good Thai food-so that the next time I'm having a craving, I can go back over there...I hope it's still there.

I just looked today and it is now closed until June 5. Maybe they are doing renovations. We came for Mother's Day. I was a little nervous because it's been years since we have eaten here and it appeared to look like a lot of tourists eating here. I'm Thai and I was wondering if I was going to be disappointed. I remember the food being OK so I kept an open mind. I decided to order something I normally would not which is the clay pot crab with glass noodles. it was OK. The crab didn't have a huge prominent taste and glass noodles are just meh to me. We also ordered the crab fried rice which was exceptional. I would definitely order that again. There was so much flavor in the rice. I also ordered a yum salad with tofu. That was also good. I loved the chili lime dressing and the added cilantro made it taste even more fresh. The lettuce leaves were huge though. I'm not sure why they were the size of a hamburger patty. It made for eating the salad challenging and messy. My kid had the salmon curry. She loved it. She doesn't handle spice so she asked for a level 2. Level two was spicy for her but she was able to eat it. Being Thai I did not feel it was spicy at all. But it did have a little bit of heat. The Mr ordered the crispy garlic chicken. It was a huge plate of it. He said it was good. He also ordered beef masuman. I will say that the portion seemed tiny. He said it was also good. I actually was pleasantly surprised this time around as I remember coming years ago and it was just OK. About the music. I did read lots of comments about their music Choice. It's not classical but jazz. To my astonishment it was extremely loud. The music Choice was not the issue but the loudness of it. I'm not sure if they tried to make it loud to sound like live music or not. We couldn't even talk to each other because we would've ended up shouting. That's really our only complaint.
