Since the store on King Street is gone decided to try the one in Manoa. Upon opening the take out container, I could already tell the rice was old. It was darker than it should be, smelled and tasted old, it was also hard and completely mushy at the same time. Definitely won't be coming here again. Too bad, I liked the one on King Street. Bangkok Chef you have lost a customer. I also hope I don't get sick from the spoiled old rice that I sampled to check if my thoughts were correct. If your rice is old and gross and you don't mind sending it out just to make some money. Makes me worry about their whole menu, especially the meat products. So disappointing and gross. Thai fast food at it's best...... It's been awhile since I last dined inside of the Bangkok Chef restaurant in Manoa. Although the restaurant remained the same through the years, the biggest surprise for me was that how empty this restaurant was, on a Friday night. Where is everybody???? It was pau hana Friday and I wanted to eat Thai food, so I told my homie - Nate Y., that we should check out the Manoa Bangkok Chef, as my friend has never been to this location in Manoa before. The Manoa Bangkok Chef is sandwiched between Finance Factors & Morning Glass Coffee + Cafe. Same set up, you place your food order at the ordering counter, the wall menu is posted up behind the ordering counter. After placing your food order, you pay, then wait until the nice lady calls you up to pick up your food at the ordering counter area. My friend & I both ordered the Pad Thai noodles with Chicken. The food here is very consistent, and the food portions are more than generous. I at half of my Pad Thai noodle dish, and took the rest home to eat the following day. It's nice to see Bangkok Chef still surviving through all the challenges with competition, as well as when the Covid-19 pandemic that hit us back in 2019/2020. read more

Everyone is always so friendly when answering the phone for take out orders and dining in the casual eatery. Food portions are consistent in quality and quantity. Summer rolls with peanut sauce and Ala cart fried chicken are always a go to for a lunch or light dinner. Red chicken curry is our favorite as well as the spring rolls. Tried their takeout for the first time tonight and it was pretty good. You get a lot of food for a really good price and they were very friendly over the phone when taking orders. They were slammed with takeout orders but we were so glad they stayed open even with the tsunami watch because we were starving. We got the spicy red beef curry which wasn't really spicy, and the medium chicken panang curry which I felt had no spiciness at all. The food had a pleasant flavor but a bit too thin in consistency for my liking. I really enjoyed the chicken satay though, and I was so glad I asked for extra peanut sauce. Great location with plenty parking and it's not crowded, but has a steady stream of customers with good turnover. Yum! Walked in and ordered the chicken red curry with sticky rice to go. They have an ample amount of casual indoor seating. The workers were very nice and my order was ready in less than 10 minutes. The curry was temperature hot and they gave me a card board under my container which made it easier to carry. The curry was really tasty and not too spicy. Will be back! read more

Bangkok Chef has excellent Thai food with flavorful flavors. Portion size is good and the price is very reasonable. You can request mild if 'spicy' dishes really aren't your cup of thai tea ;-) They seem to be doing a lot more take away than dine-in service so the place can get really busy at dinner time, but still they manage to get the food out quite fast in 10-15 mins. Lacking a liquor license, they don't serve alcohol, not even Singha Beer, but you are allowed to BYOB! We ordered the Pad Ki Mao (spicy and slightly overcooked), Pad Thai (slightly overcooked, but flavorful), Chicken Fried Rice (soggy rice and not so good), Chicken Sateh (delicious with the peanut sauce too), Spring Rolls (delicious and meaty), and the House Deluxe (mango sherbet over warm sticky mochi rice which is delicious). The take out containers make the presentation not so presentable. The lady cashier was so friendly and pretty fast. The tables are cleaned for sanitation, but the flys were a but irritating. Three and a half stars. I forgot to take any pictures of my food because I was so so hungry I apologize. If I ever go back again I will take pictures. I ordered fried chicken wings and their ginger chicken. This time I ordered everything a la carte just because I got rice at home and I wanted more of the actual food. The lady on the phone was very nice and pleasant. I picked up the order and it had just come out. Excellent. Drove home and devoured the dishes. The fried chicken was pretty crispy. If the container had had holes maybe the crisp would have lasted more. The flavor of the chicken wings was pretty bland, but don't get me wrong. I love adding my own spice on the side. The cucumber with it was crunchy and refreshing. The ginger chicken was my favorite. I usually order a curry dish but decided on ginger. I was pleasantly surprised that they had nice long sticks of ginger in the dish so I chewed on those with my chicken and green beans. It was very very tasty. I think that is one of my favorite dishes, due to the ginger. The strips of chicken are thin and I read it's the breast meat so it's good. Not too dry and not rubbery either. I will return for the pictures one day. Apologies you will just have to take my word for it. The seating area is nice and spacious abs their ac hits well. Ambiance is calm and cool and chill. You can have dessert of different flavored tapioca which is a nice touch or you can buy their fried pastries. I honestly don't recall seeing a lot but I'm sure they have some. They also sell ice teas and other drinks. Pretty good. Price wise was a bit on the higher side from when I used to go years and years ago, but I understand. Rent, supplies, labor, all has increased. Recently had lunch and it tasted great as usual but it's the little things that amaze me. I had ordered spring rolls and when I got back to the office I realized that they cut a hole in the top of the takeout container to let the steam out. It keeps the rolls nice and crispy, not soggy at all. This is something small but fantastic, having a restaurant take the time to do this small thing is great service that other restaurants need to take note. read more

Of all the Bangkok Chef locations, we frequent the Manoa one the most. The one on S. King is probably closer to us but parking can be a challenge during non-COVID19 times since the lot is for a variety of businesses including the popular Sushi King and the gym (if it's still there). Parking at this location can be a tad tight as well since the lot is shared with Morning Glass Cafe and Finance Factors, but their schedules work out such that not all three are open at the same time. I found parking easily yesterday but the lot filled up quickly soon after, from people picking up takeouts, including a GrubHub driver. The restaurant can seat many but for parties with more than four have to sit at separate tables. Bathrooms are located on-site (outside the restaurant) and you'll need a key. Food taste/quality and portion size have been consistent in the (several) years we've patronized this location. Our favorites are pad ki mao (for me, it's like char kway teow -- if you know, you know) and lemongrass chicken (for the kid, takes longer to prep). We've tried all their curries and most of their stir-fries. The hubs doesn't have a favorite, but lately he's developed a distaste for eggplant (too mushy, he said, *eye-roll*), which then leaves out all the curries and stir-fries! We've also had their pho, chicken wings, and spring/summer rolls. They're all pretty good. Their prices are reasonable as well, most meals average $12. The one thing we haven't yet tried is their tapioca desserts. They have many flavors in a variety of colors, all displayed in the cooler next to the fountain drink dispenser. They also sell Thai cookies/snacks (I think). We've noticed that their takeout business is brisk even during non-COVID19 times. I like that they use reusable bento/takeout boxes instead of styrofoam or flimsy clamshell plastic containers (that cannot be reused for food purposes) some places use. We've collected so many of those and been using them for home lunches (at the office) and I've brought them (when I remember) to dinners/lunches when I expect to have leftovers. Service has been consistent as well. Don't expect service as you would from a fine dining restaurant. This is a mom-and-pop place where sometimes the cashier helps out in the kitchen and the phone seems to ring non-stop. I.e. they're human too. Yesterday, I accidentally ordered pad see ew (it's been a while!) and the lady cashier very graciously allowed me to change to pad ki mao (same price, $10.95) even though she had already informed the kitchen. (I had gone to the car to wait when I noticed my tip on Yelp!! But luckily the dish wasn't ready yet.) Overall, a solid two thumbs up from me. :) read more

I being going Mānoa Bangkok chef a long time. For awhile I do take out my complaint is the portion is smaller in the black container box.. I don't mind paying more but portion is much smaller then before in the white starfoam box. The only complaint I have is that the veggies that come with the spring rolls is now reduced to 2 leaves of romaine lettuce and the sauce. First time coming to the Manoa location of Bangkok Chef. We normally head to the Nuuanu location since it's the most convenient for us. Located just past Manoa Marketplace. Small, dedicated parking lot for the few businesses in the buliding/complex. I can see how parking might be an issue as there aren't many stalls. Bangkok Chef has been a longtime Thai favorite for our family. The quality has been fairly consistent. Yes, portion sizes have shrunk a bit and prices have risen over the years, but that's to be expected. Overall, still a good value and great option when you're craving Thai. Typical COVID protocols in place - Masks for customers and staff. Limited in-dining seating. Stay safe, go for the pick-up/take-out option. Oddly, we were asked to bring our own bag when we called in our order. Not sure if this is a cost-cutting thing or an environmental thing. I didn't mind, just never had a food place ask this before. Took my mother in law and brother in law when they were in town for the first time and this was my MIL's first time ever eating Thai food! We had her order pad thai and she ate the whole thing and loved it! She is not a very adventurous eater so we were very pleased that she liked it. We got tom kha (spicy coconut milk soup with lemongrass) which was very flavorful, and eggplant green curry which is always good. Bangkok Chef Manoa is in a word, "reliable". I know what I'm going to get before I even step out of the car in their parking lot. As a matter of fact all Bangkok Chef locations are like that. But the newness and squeaky clean feel of this location wins me over. Advice... I like the panang curry here for its simplicity. BTW, it's the same at any Bangkok chef... their consistency is a winning trait. Red curry ordered spicy is good. The spring rolls are my guilty deep fried pleasure and I order and gladly pay the up charge for extra greens and mint. I live a wee closer to the Nuuanu location, the Nimitz location is convenient for my Pau Hana commute, but the Mānoa location is my favorite. My hubs loves the Tom Yum, it's sour my taste but a small bowl always hits the spot before my teeth start hurting. Basil chicken has choke bamboo shoots, and chicken, but could use more basil. Review #25 for 2019. Just went back to Bangkok Chef Manoa last week after several years. Been to other locations recently, but they're sit-down restaurants, and I like the Manoa location's counter. Overall, I like Bangkok Chef's quality food for competitive prices. Had a meeting with some colleagues, and Bangkok Chef was a good option near UH-Manoa. The small private parking lot is shared with some other businesses, so I could not find parking during lunch, so I had to park on the street around the corner. I ordered pad kee mao, and it was DELICIOUS! I mopped down my food so fast. The portion was decent, and the flavors were so good! This is not a dish that I usually order at Thai restaurants, but I'm going to start getting it now. Drunken noodles with meat and vegetables satisfied a craving! I also like that Bangkok Chef's containers are reusable. Stoked that the restaurant is working to reduce single-use plastics! read more

Friendly staff, chill atmosphere. We've been coming here for years. Our typical order is yellow curry with sticky rice, spring rolls & tapioca for dessert. It's usually at least semi busy if not super busy--normally waiting 5-10 mins for your food. They now serve take out in nifty containers so we don't spill all the curry on the way home. This means the servings are bit smaller and the food is a bit pricier, but you can recycle the containers for home lunch or something since they're super durable. The Thai tea is delish and I like both the taro and the banana tapioca. My only complaint is that they don't have high chairs for dining in, which is problematic if you have a 1 to 2 year old. They do have booster seats but my son needs the seat belt or leg separator strap that a high chair offers, if not he falls right through. read more

Delicious!! Food is always piping hot and tastes great. Everything is easy to tailor to dietary needs since you can pick the protein with most dishes on the menu. Never disappointed with whatever I decide to try. If you haven't already, try their tapioca! They have a wider range of flavors than most other places offer. I like getting a different one each time. Before and now during COVID-19, I always order takeout from here and have always had a great experience service-wise. My go to dishes are pad thai, panang curry (red, green, and yellow are also good), and spring rolls. I have ordered each of these multiple times and the taste and quality has been consistently good. It's probably also worth noting that in my experience, nothing is spicy unless you ask for spicy, so keep that in mind when you're ordering. Parking is limited so if possible, it doesn't hurt to bring a friend to double-park while you pick up the food. Very good restaurant with seating for around thirty on tables ranging from two to eight people. The good about coming here is the food is very flavor-able and cooked freshly when you order is placed. Only took a short time to get our food at around 2:30 in the afternoon so service was pretty good. Tables were clean and regularly clean once someone left. The just ok was that this is really just a take out place. Food was served in to go plastic containers. Very nice and reusable but to go none the less. Very few condiments, only Sriracha and shoyu and very only very small to go cups. Your food comes and you go to a table. Soda is self serve. There is no table service what so ever and no reason to leave a tip. They take your order and put it on a tray for you to come get back at the counter. Wife loves the shrimp and egg plant over noodles but I thought a little pricey. I had the Pad Thai noodles and panang curry both with chicken and Tho good, I've had better from other take out places downtown. Sadly, my panang came with pork vs chicken as ordered and was fairly tough and lots of gristle and both not as flavorable as I've had elsewhere. Bangkok Chef is either a hit or a miss for me. I've been to a few of their locations. This one in Manoa seems to be the best. The food just seems to taste better. I'm sure the recipes are the same, but it could be the chef. I'm a big fan of Thai curry, especially green and panang. I like mine with seafood, but they don't offer it here. I don't really care for beef, pork, or chicken curry. With that being said, I usually order their spring rolls and fried chicken wings. Both of those are excellent! The spring rolls come with rice vermicelli, basil, cucumber, lettuce, with a sweet chili dipping sauce. It's pretty much a lettuce wrap with spring rolls. I don't order the fried chicken wings plate. I just order the fried chicken wings entree. That way I get more wings and no rice. I'm not a rice person. I know I'm a weird Asian. The wings come straight out of the fryer piping hot. The outside is crunchy and the inside is moist. My husband doesn't like seafood. He doesn't eat beef or pork either. He always gets the yellow curry chicken with sticky rice. He enjoys it. There are potatoes and carrots mixed in there. The portions are huge. I can never finish it. I always have left overs for lunch the next day. The restaurant is fairly clean with decent amount of seating. You order at the counter and pay. When the food is ready, they call your name and you pick it up. We ordered #6 Panang pork curry w/ brown rice and #40 Lemongrass chicken w/ jasmine rice. Both dishes were very good. Will be back to enjoy! First time to try the Lemongrass chicken. This review is based on delivery. What was supposed to be 1/2hr was almost 1.5hrs. Pad kee mao: Noodles were not the typical fat, chewy ones we al love. They are like chow funn. I ordered tofu and I would say it was 3/4 tofu and 1/4 noodles. I added vinegar like any good Thai would and it helped w the taste. I rarely go here as I would equate BC as the fast food to Thai. It had a decent kick so spice wise was ok. The portion seemed small for the price but it did come hot. Tofu Tom Kha: Highly disappointing. There are a lot of non-edibles such as lemon grass, ginger, kaffir lime leaves so be careful. The soup base was so watery and no coconut flavor. It did have lime notes. There was a lot of mushrooms, the type I don't like. Idk what they're called but large and slimy. Also a lot of tofu. This is the worst soup version I have ever had and will never order this again. I like the clean food, cleanliness and ease of parking (at least most times) We make the trip from our home, it's just far enough for us to be in a different neighborhood and close enough from home to not stress out. The food is consistently good and we don't wait very long to get our orders. I don't think you could go wrong by dining here. If you are like us, we normally drink water so make sure you bring your own water or container because they give you these little cups for water and you will have to make 10 trips to quench your thirst. read more

For a decent price you get a hefty amount of food! The curry wasn't as spicy as I hoped it would be! The shrimp long noodle salad was delicious! It's a winner if you like noodles, greens, shrimp, and a spicy sweet fishy sauce! The Thai tea is $3.50 and it's a decent size. It was bigger than I expected, and tasted more milky than Thai black tea. I enjoyed the chicken on the sticks! Why do I always forget about this place? It's so convenient, has it's own parking lot and is consistently good. And not to mention, very reasonable in price. Bangkok Chef in Manoa (and their other locations too) never disappoints. A couple of my favorite dishes are the chicken larb (super flavorful) and any of their curries. You can get sticky rice if that's your jam, but I prefer their brown rice. Tip: if you're scrambling for dinner, call in and order ahead. There's a complete menu in the photos here. When Bangkok chef 1st opened on Nuuanu Avenue it was amazing. Large portions, delicious curries thick and tasty. Unbeatable prices 6-8$ fo a large plate. I have gone to Both Manoa and Nu'uanu locations many times. Now there curry is watered down and the portions are tiny. For $11 you get about half of what they used to give you. I have been to the other Bangkok Chef on Nuuanu Ave and this one on E Manoa Road. This one on E Manoa is kind of like eating at your aunty's garage in a away. At least the other location was more of a take out restaurant set up than here in Manoa. Love Bangkok Chef, but this location is well, unsettling really. I prefer the other one on Nuuanu, where a former co-worker had introduced me to this place once upon a time. I recommend the eggplant chicken. SO GOOD! Once I graduated from mild to thai spicy, everything was simply awesome!!! RECOMMENDED!! But yeah, this location for Bangkok Chef was kind of hidden, if you know where you are going, this place is good for great Thai food. I was so excited and also hungry to have lunch with my son and my visiting mom that I completely forgot to take pictures. We ordered an order of a bowl or green curry, sticky rice, pork pad thai, and chicken larb. We shared all the food. Everything was very delicious. The green curry was very flavorful and filled with chicken, basil, bamboo shoots, eggplant, and spices. The sticky rice was perfect in consistancy and texture. The pork padthai had the right amount of soft pork slices and zestful flavors. The chicken larb was good but least of my liking. I would've preferred larger slices of cabbage instead the largest leaves were 1 inch cubes. The restaurant was much hotter than my preference making it a bit uncomfortable. But the price of taste of the food makes it bearable. Always my go to place for Thai Food. read more
