OVERALL
If you're looking for a restaurant and sit-down dinner, this place is overpriced given the quality of the food and service. It is also loud with uncomfortable seating. We've lived in the Savannah area for a number of years and this place is pretty typical of restaurants in the downtown Savannah area: overpriced and overrated. If you've ever eaten in restaurants in NY, DC, Chicago, LA or in other major cities you'll know what I mean. Savannah is a third tier city and one has to look hard (or be well connected) to find a 1st rate restaurant worthy of the price. FIgure $60 per person on the average if you have 1 drink with an appetizer, salad and entree'.
DETAILS
I visited for dinner with a group of 8 on a Saturday night around 6 pm. We were seated in the upstairs area just off the entrance. Initially, a hostess tried to seat all of us to two per bistro table with hard seat wooden chairs. Fortunately, several members of our group pressed for joining tables as we had several group members that were big men.
Once we were seated, a surly waitress named Betty made her presence known quickly leading to stares amongst the group raising the unspoken question: what have we gotten ourselves into? She came across more like the stereo-typical Broomhilda. One of our group members called ahead about bringing his own decades old bottle of wine. This was permissible as long as the restaurant adds on a concierge fee for handling and service --- all OK. The problem was Broomhilda spent several minutes whining about the process of opening the bottle and the difficulty of extracting the cork while casting about her opinion that the wine may no longer be any good given its' age. This certainly cast a negative pall on the group and the couple who brought the bottle in celebration of an event.
Apparently, this is a popular watering hole as it filled up quickly upstairs and down with visitors seeking drinks and appetizers. The taller ceilings in this older building are nice. However, everyone at our table found it impossible to talk to anyone other than the person sitting immediately next to them. The combination of people walking in off the street, the clatter of dishes, flatware, and talk amongst the service staff and guests, and sounds from the adjacent bar all contribute to a constant cavernous din drowning out all but the most determined screamers at our table wishing to talk to each other. Hard seat chair make this a very uncomfortable place to sit for more than 45 minutes. Seating is tight and close in the upstairs area: there's not a lot of leg room.
All of us rated appetizers as excellent. I had the Sapelo Island Clams dish in a white wine sauce. It was very good. Salads were rated as "OK". Ratings of entree's varied. I had the Salmon special. At $26 it was a waste of money. I received a thin slice of fish about 1.5 inches wide placed on top of some inedible garnish. Thinly cut leeks were on top bearing a cream sauce of some sort with the entire serving embedding in thinly sliced radishes. The leeks were tough and difficult to chew: and I love leeks. I finally gave up trying to eat them. The radishes were good. The Salmon was OK. My wife ordered a salad with steak cooked medium rare. Portions of her steak were overcooked and she didn't finish her meal. Others in our group had lamb chops and steaks. Opinions varied re quality. The seasonings for all dishes were of a nature that I ended up drinking about 8-10 glasses of water.
Service was checkered. A number of us had to stop waiters other than our own to get refills of water, missing flatware, and other items. My wife and I had to remind Broomhilda several times about refills of water. She left a drink my wife ordered at the bar for about 15 minutes, acting as if she had forgotten it even though we had reminded her twice. Several members of our group ventured away from the table for bathroom breaks and to observe the downstairs accommodations given the large crowds amassing around 7. Silently, all of us wondered if things were better downstairs than they were upstairs. Broomhilda whined because all of us were not present: she wanted to get on with dessert orders. We all opted-out.
Once we decided to pay our check and leave, Broomhilda took her time about ringing up our checks while whining about the 20% surcharge for groups of 8 or more. It took us about 25 minutes ring out. We decided to forego desserts an opt for another place in this respect. But by the time we had gotten out of there, 4 of us had had enough and headed straight home.
In summary, this appears to be a popular place to go for appetizers and wine or to hang out at the bar. I don't recommend the restaurant. read more
