We live in Paris part time (previously full time, as did my mothers side of the family), so we were excited to try somewhere that might be cute, and a bonus as French.
Our first visit when in Savannah last year was great, albeit not especially French (nor do they offer a decent selection of French whites, so don't come here expecting a pouilly fume, Petit Chablis, or most higher end wines so easily attainable in France or even New York and major cities; they simply don't have them, just basic Sancerre and Sauvignon blanc) - nor does anyone seem to speak French or have much of a legitimate French connection, but I digress. The downstairs area was quite cute, it felt very festive for the holiday season, and we enjoyed it enough to return our next Savannah visit.
Unfortunately, that second visit was not so great. Whilst the service was good, the food - both our dishes, both being fish (trout and salmon) - were legitimately drowning in grease and butter.
Some of our favorite locals in Paris are due to the quality and freshness of the fish, and that you need no grease or butter to make the dish taste phenomenal, as the food speaks for itself (often not offered if a shipment has not been very recent that week, they would prefer to not serve your dish at all than serve days old fish; particularly salmon). Sadly not at all the case here, and I actually had to ask for an extra plate to pour the deep puddles of grease into, to attempt to eat my dish.
When my dining companion wrote a review describing the experience, managements reply was to insult him in a manner which made no sense (compounded by the fact that they called him "the woman," which illustrated their utter lack of logic, understanding, and basic common sense; he had a photo and also a male name on his account, so clearly they couldn't care less about accuracy, paying attention, nor the poor quality of the meal), and in no way respond professionally, or attempt to acknowledge the feedback (which was pretty fundamental - way too much grease and butter - not nit picking).
We gave it a final go for drinks; due to the lacking wine list, I ordered a dirty martini which was fine as far as dirties go (they're fairly basic so this was not surprising), though as the service wasn't nearly as good as before (he feigned to not understand our questions - in English, he did not speak French - and when he said we must come eat here, he similarly did not take my companions feedback of it had too much grease well), can't say we'll likely give it a fourth shot.
If you're looking for a beer with friends or a typical southern wine list, this would fit that bill, and the dining area downstairs is quite cute.
If they just toned down the heavy grease or took feedback into account rather than to attack in retaliation (particularly from people living in NYC, London, and Paris itself, anywhere more well known for high end food; hell, we spend January through March in Cape Town and the fish dishes are phenomenal and greaseless in almost every restaurant there, so not a lofty goal or expectation), it has a lot of potential, but attacking those who write critiques rather than heeding feedback probably doesn't suggest they'll be altering their food or behavior anytime soon. read more
