We stopped by after dinner, because they had a bread pudding on their menu and I was on the hunt. This was a road trip in the South, and I wanted as much shrimp and grits, fried chicken and bread pudding I could handle. Even though we were only ordering one dessert with water, the service was great and very helpful. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the weather (it had been raining off and on so it was a welcome cool). We got the bread pudding, and it was unlike any I've ever had. It was moist (a must) and the raisins were plump (very good). It was topped with a lumpy custard - like a real pudding(!) with whipped cream. After checking into our hotel we decided to find a local bar or pub via Yelp that was within walking distance. This pub was about a 10 minute walk from the Residence Inn so not bad at all. We arrived a little after 9:30pm and the place was busy in the bar area but plenty of seating in the dining area. We were immediately greeted and able to secure a spot within 2-4 minutes of arriving. You can tell this is a place where visitors patronize but there are also locals who were familiar with the bartender and had history. The bartender was lively and said whatever you want to drink if I have the ingredients I can make it. Old speckled hen and tenets on tap but no other English beer options. More of a variety of Irish beers. If you are seeking your traditional fish and chips as my lovely partner was this is not the place as they do not have fries, anything battered or fried on the menu. We ordered a open faced pot roast sandwich to share and it was a generous portion, meat was tender, gravy was tasty but if expecting roast in the sense of carrots, onions, parsnips this was just meat and gravy. However, I truly enjoyed it and the mashed potatoes were not instant and very tasty and filling. We felt welcomed, cozy and they were thorough on ID's which I appreciated. My friend Matt and I decided to stop here after our sorrel weed house tour. We were feeling hungry and we wanted to have some good food so six pence pub it was we came in and immediately got the two person table by the window, it is close to the door, but you don't feel the cold of the air because it's insulated very nice. However, we did wait a little while for our server. She did drop off the menus. We got two sodas and then it took her 10 more minutes to come and ask us what we wanted for lunch. It's not really busy in the section that she's in, but I believe she helps the restaurant as a whole and she's not limited to one section. I ordered the pork roast with white rice and green beans and my friend Matt got the grilled chicken and green beans and rice . When the food came out I specifically told the server no mashed potatoes no gravy and there was gravy all over my pork. So I have to wait for my pork, which is sucky. Enjoyed an evening out at Six Pence. Sat at the bar and ordered drinks and dinner. Got the prime rib which was on special and the Shepherd's Pie. Prime rib was just almost overdone. Food was hearty. The Crème Brûlée was extremely light and thin in texture so we joked about it being crème brûlée flavored whipped cream. The flavor was good but the texture was off for traditional crème brûlée. Rolling her eyes as if to say, who knew? As she has been saying this for years, as she utters, "Good idea, Geddes.") at the Johnny Mercer Theatre that starts at 7:30 PM. But where to eat, how to get to the restaurant, and back to theatre on time for the concert while making it easy, no stress, fun, relaxing, taste enthralling, thrilling, care free, laid back, exciting, entertaining, safe, and logistically possible? Well, let's see Sweetpea. How about we arrive at 4:30 PM, and park at the Liberty Street Parking garage, right accross the street from the Johnny Mercer Theatre. Easy, check. Next we get an Uber to the Six Pence Pub. Why? No stress, check. We start our meal, with one of their adventuresome, tasty, cocktails which are all fantastic. "But how about getting to the Concert?" Right now, we're having some fun hanging out with our friends and catching up. Fun, check. Please remember Poindexter (I.e. my name for my conscience), we're not driving until after the concert is over which leaves us about five hours to recover from our cocktail before dinner, or two, you Devil you! Relaxing, check. We next get to experience eating some of the most delicious food in Savannah, GA. From the Crab Cake, to the Scotch Eggs, to the Smoked Salmon to their bombastic Broiled Portabella, their appetizers were both savory and palette pleasing. Then our companions had their outstanding, tastebud tintilating, French Onion and Chicken Noddle soups which are both made from scratch. Yea, yea, French Onion and Chicken Noodle soup, big deal. If you have not had it, I am here to tell you, there is nothing ordinary about either, as both were very delicious. We then dined on their Open Roast Beef, their Tender Pot Roast, their Atlantic Salmon all of which offered a very pleasing, tremendous taste in their own right. However, the Broiled flounder stuffed with shrimp and scallops was so exceptional, we ordered another two of these entrees so we could all share this dish as part of each of our meals. Taste enthralling, check. Please note, I did not write the words, "Pub Food" above as the Six Pence Pub's fare will thrill your tastebuds right down to the last morsel. Thrilling, check. Our Server was exceptional, timely, and personable. Care free, check. Our ambience was simply Pub delightful! Laid back, check. But then the bill came and lo and behold our friend had to stand and do a little Irish jig, or did he have to go to the bathroom?... Nah, it was the very reasonable pricing that pleased us all as we scampered to catch our Uber. No, wait a minute, we did not dine and dash. We would never dine and dash. We tipped our Server handsomely, paid our bill, and then we all scampered to catch our Uber as we were all feeling wonderful. Exciting, check. We made the show with twenty-five minutes to spare, which left us enough time to buy our lovely dinner companions a show Tee Shirt to memorialize our evening together. First off, the Six Pence Pub has a great look to it. With the red phone booth outside, you just want to enter the British style pub. The cool vibe continues inside with a nice bar and plenty of beers on tap. I enjoyed my Harp! The problem here was we didn't love the food. In fact, my wife's crab cakes were burnt on the bottom. To the restaurant's credit, they did give a free drink to make up for it. I'll also say that my homemade bread pudding was excellent! All in all, I would come back here to sit at the bar and enjoy a drink in a fun place. (I'd also make sure I ordered that dessert)! read more

Great find for us, but not unknown cuz they were packed!! Told us 20 minute wait but seated in 5. Woohoo! We started with Scotch eggs and Welsh Rarebit. Had never had either and liked them. The eggs were cold and had good relish and mustard to add flavor. The rarebit was warm and cheesy. Jess had Guinness beef is a bread bowl and it was delicious. I had Shepard's pie and wax equally awesome. The dinners were fantastic and would probably order again, even tho we like to try new things. We ended with bourbon pecan pie and again, really good. The blue cheese dressing for the salad had chunks of blue cheese, how I like it, and all items were very large and shareable. Only (really minor) complaint is that the cheddar wedge wasn't as good as I was hoping. It may be more of a mild/soft cheddar but flavor was lacking by comparison to everything else. Four of us came here in the afternoon on a COLD day in Savannah. It was a great respite from the temps and our day of walking around. The beer selection is fantastic ! Just about every style you could want unless you prefer boring beer. I would come here just to try a bunch of the options. The food was good (not outstanding) but still very acceptable. The Shepard's pie (really Cottage pie) was good but the serving was a little small. The soups were very good and I was told that the Corned beef sandwich was excellent. Who knew there was an authentic English pub in downtown Savannah? Apparently everybody, because this place was packed for lunch! The inside is very authentic and reminded me of several places we visited in London a couple of years back. The food was authentic, and i was really happy to find Welsh Rarebit, as a lot of places don't tend to offer it in the US these days. The food was good, the drinks were good, but I would definitely bring your patience, as you're going to be touching elbows with the neighboring tables.
