Great place! Food was delicious! So good we went twice on our five day trip to Savannah!!

Hi Everyone, So you're dressed for the concert and maybe your seeing and are anticipating your delight while you listen to John Cougar Mellencamp, KC and the Sunshine Band, Chicago, Joe Bonamassa, Steve Martin and Martin Short, or the Motown All-Stars (e.g. "Holy Mackerel Ethel, we have to check out the Johnny Mercer, it's got some great shows." Rolling her eyes as if to say, who knew? As she has been saying this for years, as she utters, "Good idea, Geddes.") at the Johnny Mercer Theatre that starts at 7:30 PM. But where to eat, how to get to the restaurant, and back to theatre on time for the concert while making it easy, no stress, fun, relaxing, taste enthralling, thrilling, care free, laid back, exciting, entertaining, safe, and logistically possible? Well, let's see Sweetpea. How about we arrive at 4:30 PM, and park at the Liberty Street Parking garage, right accross the street from the Johnny Mercer Theatre. Easy, check. Next we get an Uber to the Six Pence Pub. Why? No stress, check. We start our meal, with one of their adventuresome, tasty, cocktails which are all fantastic. "But how about getting to the Concert?" Right now, we're having some fun hanging out with our friends and catching up. Fun, check. Please remember Poindexter (I.e. my name for my conscience), we're not driving until after the concert is over which leaves us about five hours to recover from our cocktail before dinner, or two, you Devil you! Relaxing, check. We next get to experience eating some of the most delicious food in Savannah, GA. From the Crab Cake, to the Scotch Eggs, to the Smoked Salmon to their bombastic Broiled Portabella, their appetizers were both savory and palette pleasing. Then our companions had their outstanding, tastebud tintilating, French Onion and Chicken Noddle soups which are both made from scratch. Yea, yea, French Onion and Chicken Noodle soup, big deal. If you have not had it, I am here to tell you, there is nothing ordinary about either, as both were very delicious. We then dined on their Open Roast Beef, their Tender Pot Roast, their Atlantic Salmon all of which offered a very pleasing, tremendous taste in their own right. However, the Broiled flounder stuffed with shrimp and scallops was so exceptional, we ordered another two of these entrees so we could all share this dish as part of each of our meals. Taste enthralling, check. Please note, I did not write the words, "Pub Food" above as the Six Pence Pub's fare will thrill your tastebuds right down to the last morsel. Thrilling, check. Our Server was exceptional, timely, and personable. Care free, check. Our ambience was simply Pub delightful! Laid back, check. But then the bill came and lo and behold our friend had to stand and do a little Irish jig, or did he have to go to the bathroom?... Nah, it was the very reasonable pricing that pleased us all as we scampered to catch our Uber. No, wait a minute, we did not dine and dash. We would never dine and dash. We tipped our Server handsomely, paid our bill, and then we all scampered to catch our Uber as we were all feeling wonderful. Exciting, check. We made the show with twenty-five minutes to spare, which left us enough time to buy our lovely dinner companions a show Tee Shirt to memorialize our evening together. Our show was extremely entertaining which thrilled us all, to no end. Thanks Steve and Martin, you're the best! Thrilling, and entertaining, double check. Logic dictates that when we were able to throughly enjoy our evening while having an easy, no stress, fun, relaxing, taste enthralling, thrilling, care free, laid back, exciting, entertaining time that it is, in fact, logistically possible. Logistically possible, check. And yes, we were safely able to enjoy our ride home while we all talked about how much we enjoyed our evening together. Safe, check. Enjoyed an evening out at Six Pence. Sat at the bar and ordered drinks and dinner. Got the prime rib which was on special and the Shepherd's Pie. Prime rib was just almost overdone. Food was hearty. The Crème Brûlée was extremely light and thin in texture so we joked about it being crème brûlée flavored whipped cream. The flavor was good but the texture was off for traditional crème brûlée. Service was adequate. The space is always cozy feeling and they still had some holiday decor up which made it feel wintery even though it was an unusually warm day out today. read more

We were walking from our hotel to Forsyth Park and happened to stumble across this cute little British pub and we saw that it had great reviews so we decided to stop. The food and service were great. Our server was Katherine and she was so fun and attentive!. Would definitely recommend this place. My husband had the shepherds pie and a cup of the corn crab chowder and a beer. I had the pot roast with mashed potatoes and veggie and a glass of wine and everything was delicious! read more

My friend Matt and I decided to stop here after our sorrel weed house tour. We were feeling hungry and we wanted to have some good food so six pence pub it was we came in and immediately got the two person table by the window, it is close to the door, but you don't feel the cold of the air because it's insulated very nice. However, we did wait a little while for our server. She did drop off the menus. We got two sodas and then it took her 10 more minutes to come and ask us what we wanted for lunch. It's not really busy in the section that she's in, but I believe she helps the restaurant as a whole and she's not limited to one section. I ordered the pork roast with white rice and green beans and my friend Matt got the grilled chicken and green beans and rice . When the food came out I specifically told the server no mashed potatoes no gravy and there was gravy all over my pork. So I have to wait for my pork, which is sucky. My new pork arrived and it taste decadent. I did ask though for ketchup because I'm the type of person that wants to dunk my meat in ketchup. 10/10 read more

My shepards pie was fine - but way smaller than expected The biggest gripe was that we had several party members with celiac disease, and the server was not knowledgeable about which items were gluten free and which were not, and attempts to make a sandwhich with a lettuce wrap instead of bread returned cold meat in cold lettuce only. Went here a while back (January 2024), but I wanted to rate this place still. This was the first traditional English pub I have ever been to. I knew this place would have high hopes when this was the only establishment around Savannah with a 1+ hour wait. I was told to order the shepherds pie, and it did not disappoint. I would order this again. In addition, my drink paired nicely with the food. I found the place itself really cute. From the furniture to the wooden interior, I felt like I was transported to England. Shared the Welsh rarebit and loaded banger apps and the Ploughman's lunch during a girls trip visit. All were great. The blue cheese dressing for the salad had chunks of blue cheese, how I like it, and all items were very large and shareable. Only (really minor) complaint is that the cheddar wedge wasn't as good as I was hoping. It may be more of a mild/soft cheddar but flavor was lacking by comparison to everything else. First off, the Six Pence Pub has a great look to it. With the red phone booth outside, you just want to enter the British style pub. The cool vibe continues inside with a nice bar and plenty of beers on tap. I enjoyed my Harp! The problem here was we didn't love the food. In fact, my wife's crab cakes were burnt on the bottom. To the restaurant's credit, they did give a free drink to make up for it. I'll also say that my homemade bread pudding was excellent! Great find for us, but not unknown cuz they were packed!! Told us 20 minute wait but seated in 5. Woohoo! We started with Scotch eggs and Welsh Rarebit. Had never had either and liked them. The eggs were cold and had good relish and mustard to add flavor. The rarebit was warm and cheesy. Jess had Guinness beef is a bread bowl and it was delicious. I had Shepard's pie and wax equally awesome. The dinners were fantastic and would probably order again, even tho we like to try new things. We ended with bourbon pecan pie and again, really good. I Loved the atmosphere at Six Pence Pub. Our bartender was super nice and very helpful. Allowing us to try several beers before we settled on our choices. Four of us came here in the afternoon on a COLD day in Savannah. It was a great respite from the temps and our day of walking around. The beer selection is fantastic ! Just about every style you could want unless you prefer boring beer. I would come here just to try a bunch of the options. The food was good (not outstanding) but still very acceptable. The Shepard's pie (really Cottage pie) was good but the serving was a little small. The soups were very good and I was told that the Corned beef sandwich was excellent. I am looking forward to returning to Six Pence on my next trip to Savannah. read more

Ambiance: Very Irish like, I have recently been to Ireland/UK and it really has that UK feel. Food: Overall was good. They do not serve fried food or french fries due to some stupid regulation. The shepherds pie was ok, had better in other pubs. The burgers were good, not phenomenal. Service: We had a pretty good service despite the place being super busy. This pub is a bit off the "busy/touristy" area so it is worth coming and checking it out. read more

Who knew there was an authentic English pub in downtown Savannah? Apparently everybody, because this place was packed for lunch! The inside is very authentic and reminded me of several places we visited in London a couple of years back. The food was authentic, and i was really happy to find Welsh Rarebit, as a lot of places don't tend to offer it in the US these days. The food was good, the drinks were good, but I would definitely bring your patience, as you're going to be touching elbows with the neighboring tables. The service was good though, we had multiple servers stopping by to bring food or just check in on us. Overall it was a fun experience after a long morning of sightseeing. read more

Fun spot on Bull Street in Savannah's Historic District. As the name suggests, this is a distinctly English pub, right down to the red phone box outside. They have a nice selection of beers on tap for most any taste. The menu isn't huge but has a number of nice selections. My companion and I stopped in late afternoon and chose to eat light--French onion soup and Italian wedding soup respectively. Service was quick and friendly, and great atmosphere. read more

Very disappointed with food. The French Onion Soup was cold. The slice of cheese on top did not melt but was browed with a Crème Brule torch to the point it tasted burned. The bread bowl had the top sliced off but no bread taken out so there was a very disappointingly small amount of actual Guinness Beef. The Guinness Beef flavor was dominated by the peas, although the four pieces of beef and the larger mushroom pieces were tasty. Frankly, I didn't give this rating a one because the server was nice and the cheese cake they bought to serve was very good. The ambiance felt authentic pub like. It had a lot of wood but also a lot of noise. With all of the wood and simulated tin ceiling tiles, sounds are bounced all over the place. You don't go to a place like this if you're looking for a nice quiet spot. You go here to feel the energy of a crowded space. So I usually don't waste my time writing reviews, but I am putting the effort forth today. Yes, I am complaining. For over $90 it was a terrible rip off. Please go forewarned. read more

This pub came highly recommended but is disappointing. If you visit just spend a couple of extra dollars and order a heartier entree. I ordered the soup and half sandwich for 19.99. I do not mind paying for good food, and I know prices have gone up. Having said that if an establishment is going to charge this at least add an ample amount of meat to the sandwich, not a kiddie portion. The French onion soup had very little flavor. Opted for a cold Smithwicks beer that is usually only at Irish Pubs. The bangers and mash was good, but I wasn't expecting the gravy to be brown gravy on the sausage. Still very good but not expected. The shepherds pie was also good but not as savory as others I have had. They seemed to make it more simple for the clientele. It would have been a little better but the server, didn't seem to like serving outdoors or want to work that day. Not the friendliest but it was fine. Sat outside to enjoy the weather.
