Charming restaurant with relaxed, cheerful ambiance and plenty of parking. French favorites were on the menu and we sampled many. Pricing is curious as many items were well beyond normal pricing while some were excellent buys. The wines were on the high side, but there are bargains by the bottle. The Pomme Dauphin are perfect but very expensive. I'd try them once-clearly a price leader for the establishment. The Moule et Frites were well priced and ample; alas they did not get them "right." First they were aggressively salty. Returned, they came out less than fully cooked (some time in the broth cured that) and now saltless. Not sure if the chef was throwing attitude or what happened there. The Steak Frites appears pricey at $55 but it's shareable and heavenly. I'd encourage a lighter touch on doneness. Our medium rare was trending medium. The chocolate mousse was not cold enough, although tasty. The crème brûlée classic & perfect. The service was stellar. I ordered the steak frites. The fries were amazing. The steak was not. it was tough and chewy at the same time. It was obviously a flank steak which is hard to mess up. It was seasoned well just not cooked well. Wife ordered the eggs benedict and it was cold. I have NEVER sent anything back but considered it this time because it was that cold. Two people ordered the french onion soup and one was burnt, the other was good. The burger was good. Walking into a grocery store/restaurant in a former post office I once frequented was a fun concept. The indoor seating and grocery store contributed to a great atmosphere. Our waiter was knowledgeable and provide great recommendations. We enjoyed the ocean trout tartar and duck with venison sausage. We will return to check out their burger and steak frites. Maybe this is the cranky old person in me who's longing for the good ole days of quality matching value--I would've given 5 stars if the prices were about 10-15% less. read more

Lovely food, stingy iced tea We were a group of 5 for Sunday brunch. Bureau has a pleasant outdoor seating area, attentive servers, and well prepared food. We ordered eggs benedict, omlette, crepe - all very well prepared. The California's behind Bureau blundered on the iced tea. They serve half-glasses of tepid tea and do not provide refills! In Austin, Texas it is the custom to provide large glasses of tea with plenty of ice and to offer at least one refill without asking!! It's not a cocktail! Come on, Californians, if you're going to seat people outdoors in the heat, keep us cool with iced tea!​ read more

We've been anxiously awaiting the opening of this place, and it far exceeded our expectations on so many levels. Every single member of the team is dedicated and eager to make this place a success. We were seated by Gabrielle and her big smile. Shortly afterward our server Phineas arrived and we knew that we were in good hands when he eagerly offered suggestions and insights about the menu. John the GM came by to check on us several times. The array of music being played in the background and the lighting outside further contributed to the amazing atmosphere. I've always believed that the success and attitude of any team flows from the top downward, and despite the fact that they've only been open for two weeks, it's already operating like a well oiled machine. The beef tartare was truly one of the best we've ever tasted and was seasoned delicately with a clearly high quality olive oil and herbs, the carafe of rose wine is a steal, we couldn't get enough of the cooking broth for the mussels which we sopped up with French bread, the fries remained hot and crispy, and everyone was clearly enjoying themselves right along with us. This was honestly one of the best evenings we've had in quite awhile. Thanks to everyone for your professionalism, your ability to make everyone feel welcome and support in making this possible. It's certainly fantastic and clear that the chef was a Season 19 contestant of Top Chef and that a former US Post Office has been so cleverly repurposed. We're fortunate to have such a wonderful new place fully integrated into the neighborhood which we both agreed reminded us of restaurants in Portland, Oregon. We are definitely looking forward to our next of many visits because our experience was beyond belief from start to finish. read more

After reading the less than stellar reviews, I'm honestly wondering if we were at the same restaurant. We dined last night, my husband and myself, and our son and daughter in law, in from Nashville for the weekend. We ordered the endive salad, the trout tartare, the steak and frites, the mussels, and the chicken, as well as the carrots and asparagus. Everything was served with the perfect combination of friendly, knowledgeable, and professional with perfect timing thrown in. Food was both beautifully presented and perfectly seasoned. The trout was lovely. Delicate tiny bits of the freshest fish you can get without sitting on the dock after your catch. The frites were amazing and served with a simple aioli that, had I been in my own kitchen, I would have licked the bowl. The mussels were divine and swimming in a beautiful broth with gorgeous shreds of shallot in abundance. We passed on dessert only because we had been there for so long and wanted to give the staff a break, but we'll be back to order everything! I was initially a little disappointed that our post office had closed. Boy have I changed my mind!! Thank you Jo and Steph for adding this gem to our 'hood!! read more

This was mostly a bad service experience. We had read about this restaurant in Texas Monthly and were looking forward to trying it. Since we don't like to eat heavy food at night, we came for brunch. Sadly, the brunch menu was scant, and the food was not entirely fresh. Most of the dishes we read about and wanted to try simply weren't on the brunch menu. Particularly disappointing was the missing chocolate mousse but most everything else mentioned in Texas Monthly was missing as well. The French cremant, a sparkling wine, was served in a white wine glass instead of a champagne glass. The dessert crepe was cold and stale. The service may have been the worst I've ever had in Austin. Nothing like Cipollina or Josephines, not even close to the worst experience there. We saw our server disappear behind the outside bathroom with her phone. We watched another couple that went on the wait list as we were being seated eat their food while we still waited to be served. She wasn't available most of the time we were at the table. Many times we called other waitstaff to help us, which began to annoy them. She didn't know the answer to our question about their specialty drink. She failed to mentioned that if I bought the 3 oz. (Kid) burger, it wasn't a smaller version of the adult burger but a flat, dry, tasteless piece with different cheese on a full bun and no condiments or arugula. No, they didn't have mustard even when requested. Neither did she notice I couldn't eat it. The kitchen delivered the food, but there was never at any time a curtesy check to see if we needed anything, say, salt, pepper, mustard. She stayed gone so long, we couldn't get drink refills until almost finished and ended up leaving it behind. Austin has wonderful restaurants so don't expect this one to stay in business long. This was my husband's birthday dinner. We went in with buoyant spirits and left disappointed in a mediocre meal with clueless service and apparently no management. A disappointment all the way around. Husband ordered the pork chop, which appeared to be a very generous serving (pork chop covered entire plate), but was mostly fat and severely undercooked. The carrots hiding under the pork chop were tasty. My ratatouille looked pretty, but lacked flavor and vegetables. It was mostly tomato sauce with a few veggies thrown in and NO flavor. so bummed by the worst service monday night. I have been here a few times before and the food has not blown me away but the patio vibe is so great I was hoping my friends and fam would enjoy. We waited an hour and a half for any food to come after having to ask to order one hour in. It was not that crowded. When I went to speak to the manager about the wait after an hour and a half I was told that the are not a fast food establishment and the wait was because we changed our party size from 4 to 8. ( I had called to make sure this was ok. ) Mind you for of us were children so not even 8 entrees to prepare. An simple apology for the wait and perhaps asking if we needed anything in the mean time would have gone a long way but apparently we were the problem for wanting to spend our time and money there. Love having a place in the neighborhood. Food was good-big hit was the French onion soup. Try it. Tad expensive for what you get. Challenges: very noisy on a cold evening (hard to hear across a table) and, unusual for these times and Austin, no carry out is allowed. Even many fine dining places have this option and places equal to this one (eg chez Zee) almost always do. Love the idea of crepes but an ice cold crepe wasn't what one expects. Came to Bureau de Post for dinner and was so impressed. The food and service was amazing. You would never know this place just opened. We had the Pomme Dauphine and endive salad to start. The trout roe on top of the pomme dauphine was delightful! The endive salad was such a delicious start out our meal. Perfectly refreshing and balanced. For our second course we had steak frites and duck cassoulet and both dishes were so delicious! We had crème brûlée with an espresso for dessert and it was exactly what we needed. Agree wholeheartedly with what John L. says below. I don't write reviews normally, but the food was so incredibly bad for what it is that I had to write something. Baseline: the food is completely underseasoned and overpriced. Got the crepe, and I'm convinced anybody could make a better crepe than that. One medium sized crepe with flavorless whipped cream and some raw fruit inside. If you're getting a sweet crepe then it should be at least somewhat sweet. Shockingly bad, and it's $14. I've never sent something back, and I regret that I didn't. Got the croque madame, too, which was slightly better but also underseasoned. Maybe other stuff on the menu is fine idk. The space is nice, but I'm still never coming back. read more

Has great potential but they really need to figure out seasoning/flavor, portions, and execution. The trout tartar needs more citrus and salt. its basically chopped fish, lacking flavor. Both mussel dishes have good flavor but need to be at least twice the size. Their entree mussel portion is a joke. No french bistro would serve that small size. They have also served multiple unopened mussels in such small portion on two visits. I hope they take the lack luster reviews seriously and tweak some things. I think people want to see this place do well given its location. Right now its just way over priced for the quality/flavor (lack there of) and portions on certain dishes (mussels). read more

I was very pleased with the meal and service. The ambience is neat with the grocery store, and the patio situation is great. The escargots is on par with other fantastic French restaurants I have dined at, the ribeye was perfectly prepared med-rare. Finneas was our server and recommended to put the Au Poivre on the side, I concur and appreciate the recommendation. The Endive salad was refreshing and a great way to prepare the palate for the rich entrees. I have read through other reviews and folks need to understand that this is a spot where you can dine casual or formal, would be a great early date spot or a place to have an evening out with the wife. I was so glad that the Bureau de Poste opened in Hyde Park. We live in the area and really wanted to like it. However, we went for Sunday brunch and the experience was lacking, subpar. The crepe was flavorless, the bacon cold, the coffee bitter. I saw that other diners had meals that looked more appetizing so I will give it another try. I really want to love this restaurant. The space is lovely. Wonderful outdoor patio and connection to the Tiny Grocer. Service has improved substantially since the opening. The food just isn't great. French onion soup was served warmish with congealed cheese. The burger is two little patties which are thin, flavorless, and expensive for what you get. I had such high hopes, but we left disappointed. We showed up right on time for our Tuesday evening reservation. The host informed us that we couldn't be seated right away because several reservations before us were late due to bad weather. Our table was ready but they didn't want to overwhelm our server by seating us right away. So instead of waiting at a table, we stood around waiting in the grocery store. It was a bit off-putting. Once seated, we started with the Pomme Dauphine. It definitely had potential. The smoked trout roe on top was delicious, but the croquette was bland, under seasoned, and cooked slightly too long leaving a bit of a burnt taste on the tongue. The steak frites also had potential. The fries were good, and the steak was tender but very under seasoned - maybe not seasoned at all? We asked for au poivre, but ended up with herb butter, which did not lend any additional flavor to the steak. The venison sausage in the duck leg cassoulet was the star of the show. The duck itself was tender, but dry and very, very bland, as were the beans. Collectively, our savory dishes were very disappointing. The caramel dark chocolate mousse was a winner! It was rich and delicious. But, the chantilly cream on top was runny and not sweet at all (by definition, chantilly cream should be sweeter than regular whipped cream). One other small detail affected our experience. There was a wayward cassoulet bean that landed in the middle of the table during the sharing of our entrees, along with various other crumbs. It was never cleaned up...not when the server took away our entree, or delivered the dessert menu, or brought spoons for dessert, or brought out the dessert. So many chances to tidy up, and none taken. I finally asked for an extra napkin and covered it so we wouldn't have to keep looking at it during dessert. :-) For the price, we definitely expected higher quality food and service. Sadly, I don't think we will have dinner here again. read more

After 2nd visit, less impressed. 'Hood needs a good restaurant, and French Bistro sounded great. Hit and miss on the menu. The French Onion Soup is great, the escargots are good, the traditional moules frites are big and good. The scallops -3 divers scallops in a bed of pureed squash- were pretty tasteless. The pommes dauphines, 4 little mashed potato Swedish meatball size deep fried balls with a little trout roe on top for $18- were tasteless. The cassoulet had a duck leg confit, no thigh attached, excellent but too small for $34, and a marginal venison sausage thrown into a pretty tasteless white bean and carrot hodgepodge. Theyd run out of the Sunday Special, roast lamb, unfortunately- only 8 portions. Service is above average, bottled wine decently priced. Im worried that the supporting lease-holder, Tiny Market, wont be able to carry itself, and the place will fold for lack of venue before they hopefully iron out the bugs. More yuppie giftshop than n'hood convenience store. Wish them luck. No Chez Nous. read more
