I have held off on a previous bad review of Bureau de Postre, but now with a second 1 star experience I have to post about it. My first 1 star experience was when my wife got food poisoning and when I went to inform the chef the next day he told me she was sick all night because she probably drank too much wine. Here is the reason for my second 1 star experience from this restaurant. Went today for a noon reservation on Mother's Day. Firstly, tons of kids here, no kids menu of any sort for Mother's Day. Their option was a grilled cheese with fries, which we were appreciate for, but why would you not think to have options for kids? Fruit cup, small burger, etc. they have these options during normal operations. Second, no one answers the phone here. I called 10+ times between 10am and 11:45am to request indoor seating. By default, they don't answer the phone nor do they at tiny grocer. One of the legs at the table they sat us at was so off balance that our drinks were spilling when someone would add pressure to the table. We had kid with us, so we ended up using three napkins in full cleaning up the spilled water. They missed putting in our order so, every table around us was served before us. We didn't get our food till complaining multiple times. Even after complaining tables around us continued to get their food first. To hold the table over I asked for fries to be delivered, something that should take minutes to prep, took another 15 minutes. Our food finally showed up at 1:15pm. We asked for to go boxes and even the boxes took 5 minutes. What is going on over here? I spent $20 at tiny grocer getting so many snacks for the kids because the food was so delayed. The entire table (minus the two toddlers) ended up leaving with zero food in our stomachs, but extremely frustrated. The manager comped our meal, which was very kind of him and he expressed tons of empathy. Classy move 100% This place is expensive and they just don't have it together. I don't like giving poor reviews, I rarely do it, but given this experience multiple times it's needed. read more

I tried Bureau de Poste recently and had the vegan paillard, it was SO GOOD!! Honestly, it may not have looked like much in the picture, but the flavor was incredible. I ate every bite. It reminded me of Indian spices with a little potato vibe, almost like a samosa in a new form. Hard to explain, but definitely worth trying for yourself. I also loved that the menu had plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, plus a lot of gluten-free choices, which makes it a great spot for anyone with dietary restrictions. Another fun touch is that the restaurant is attached to a little shop with unique trinkets to browse, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. I think this place would make a perfect date night spot, you can have a great meal, then walk around the area afterward. I'd definitely come back again. read more

The food was excellent. I am really surprised by the previous reviews. We had the Steak & Frites, Eggs Benedict, Beignets, and the Smoked fish plate. It was all SO good. The smoked fish surprised me. I'm not a big fish person, and smoked fish salad/dip is often dry.... Not the case here! I really enjoyed it. The beignets were fantastic. The strawberry compote they came with was soo good. These are my new favorite beignets in Austin.... I prefer them over Epicerie! They were the perfect size, crunchy, and the flavor was complex with the berries. I will come back for these alone. I always order my steak rare and I think this was the first time a restaurant got it rare enough! A lot of times they still give you medium rare, but not here. It was perfect. These eggs Benedict was also "very good" according to my husband. Man of few words ;) The coffee was also great. The service was great also, but more of a European vibe. They won't check up on you every 5 seconds like traditional restaurants, but I enjoyed this because we didn't feel rushed. We never got the feeling they were wanting us to leave so they could flip the table. Plenty of parking in the lot as well as on the street. The patio is dog friendly! It's just very mid level food for the price point you're paying. The service is friendly and the vibe is pretty nice but that's where it leaves off. We have been a few times now and the menu items just sort of leave you wishing they were less creative if they're going to be so mediocre. Croque Madame was served open face with a burnt sunny egg (egg yolk completely torched hard and dry). Bechemel was runny rather bland and it looks like a blind person did the plating on the line. Just sloppy and rather unappetizing. The French onion soup was hardly that. It was just brother with a piece of cheese covered toasted dunked in it. The onions were neither cooked nor carmelized and overall it felt like they were trying to stretch a batch from the day before with water and some chopped onion. Flavorless to say the least. The side of bacon was $8 and seemed like the most mid store bought bacon you've ever seen. Paper thin and burnt to a crisp. And don't get me started on their terrible coffee offerings...the place needs an overhaul. read more

Oh man, I love a good French restaurant! This place did it right. I shared arancini balls, escargot, salate verte, and Halibut (the server's recommendation) and all of it was EXCELLENT. The halibut was the real standout - cooked perfectly and the sauce made me want to lick my plate. This place has a lovely patio as well, with fun decorations on the walls and pretty lighting. Normally when I stop at Dame coffee, I also stop at Sopa for a taco. I ate so much on vacation, I am trying to eat healthier to drop a few pounds I picked up on vacation. So, decided to get a healthy parfait (yogurt, granola, coconut, hazelnuts, fresh berries) at Bureau De Poste. Their website was not super clear on the hours of operation. Bureau de Poste, Tiny Grocer and a book store are all clustered together in the center of a Hyde Park residential neighborhood. Bureau de Poste does not open until 5 pm today. The shared cashier was super kind and friendly to share this information. Although I have dined a Bureau de Poste previously, I was disappointed I did get my parfait as planned. Because I was treated so well, hence I'm giving them a "4" rating. Pro tip: If you are not entirely sure what time a business opens, call ahead to confirm. read more

Stopped by to checkout the Tiny Grocer next to First Light Books. Saw they had a cafe, bar, deli section, and sit-down eating area in the store. Enthralled, I asked to see the menu and sit down. Turns out this restaurant is Bureau de Poste. There are a few tables inside, bar seating, and some patio seating outdoors. I was seated at the bar, which is just "opposite" the cafe. Wasn't too hungry, so I just ordered a snack. Pomme Dauphine. It was yummy. Basically a mashed potato fritter. With crème fraîche on top and bottom, topped with smoked trout roe, and chives. The chives are really there for color. A great combo. Could it be made even better? I suppose there's always room for flavor improvements, but the version I had was more than satisfying as a snack. Side note: for those wondering where the grocer starts and the restaurant ends--the deli prepared food is not meant to be eaten at the restaurant. I asked because I was semi-confused while searching for a snack to eat. It's unclear whether the deli is part of the restaurant or not. The cafe is weird. The staff work both on the grocer side and the restaurant side. So can I get a pastry? A cookie? Some coffee, or not? (Hint: those items are not on the restaurant menu). So if you want coffee-based beverages, you'll have to go sit on the cafe side, which is on the grocery store side. read more

Flies everywhere inside the restaurant. Absolutely disgusting conditions for a place with a $60 steak on the menu. Food was extremely bland, and took about 45 minutes to come out on a Friday. The oil on the fries smelled a bit old, and the steaks for our party were overcooked. We tried the duck leg, and it was well-cooked but not a particularly interesting preparation. Despite the high price point, I think this spot compares unfavorably to the many other restaurants nearby. The cleanliness issue is enough to prevent me from returning. read more

So excited to have found this before the holiday season. Now that that's out of the way, let's get to the food! The pomme dauphine was amazing, If you're debating, just get it. The endive salad was fresh and light. These two items alone would be a five star meal. Our table also had steak frites and moules et frites. (Big frites people) Our waitress, Andrea was an absolute delight and made our experience very special. The atmosphere was very niche and quant. Local neighborhood vibe. Adding a star after a wonderful dinner here. Came here because the line to the pizza place was long and I am so glad because this was the better meal. They now have cocktails which is a great way to start the mood. I ordered a salade vert, escargot, and asparagus with mouselline sauce. The salad was sizable enough for two but i needed my greens and devoured it. It has some fennel to give it a nice touch and the dressing the fresh greens were perfect. The escargot was buttery and it came with some bread to soak up all the goodness. The asparagus nice and a little sweet just the way it should be. I finished it all off with some Bourgogne blanc. A wonderful casual dining experience in an old post office with a little more elevated French food. Would get again: Carrots- I know I'm starting with a side... but I swear everyone raved about these. Escargot- a classic. Ask for more bread! Moules et frites - the frites are perfectly cooked and you can't go wrong with an aioli. If you like mussels, you'll be happy. Asparagus- easy to please several folks, good portion! Would probably pass on: Cheese and Charcuterie boards- while the charcuterie was of great quality, some of your less adventurous eaters may not like it. The cheese was great, but I could recreate the same board for under $5 from central market. Beef tartare- honestly I've just had better tartare at other spots in Austin that it's hard!! Would move up to the "would get again" section if I hadn't. Would def pass on: Ratatouille- sorry I'm just not a ratatouille girlie and this did not turn me into one. Hands down one of the best meals I have had in quite a while! Nestled in the heart of Hyde Park, I absolutely love how this feels like a true neighborhood gem! While there is some inside seating the majority is on the patio outside, which makes this the perfect spot for a glorious summer evening dinner. Service was a tad slow, but well worth it for the quality and quantity of food that was delivered. We did raise the little flag attached to the table to signal we needed service. It didn't work. The food was overall ok, no complaints but also no "wow" moments. There wasn't a dish that stood out as spectacular. I do want to try the steak et frites, but we were there on the wrong day. Came in for a brunch with a friend in December (2023). The ambience is nice and cute but I don't think it was worth coming in for brunch. There wasn't really anything that uniquely French on the menu so we both got a croque madame which honestly just tasted like a breakfast sandwich but $18. My main gripe was that the service just seemed to unprepared. My friend asked them if they had any tea/coffee options because there were none on the menu and the waiter seemed really confused like it was a weird question and replied they just had regular coffee. I think the coffee was also like $5 even though it wasn't even on the menu and just like drip coffee with milk? Maybe it's because we sat outside and it was right at opening time but I watched the waiters just chatting on the side while we were trying to get their attention for a while. Overall I found Bureau de Poste overpriced and nothing to be wowed by for brunch, but I'd be curious to see if the full and indoor dining experience might be better. read more

Service: 10/10. Not a fine dining venue, but the service provided by Head Chef Jo Chan and server Finneus welcomed us from the moment we arrived. In fact, due to rain, the service arrived earlier than our reservation time when Jo called us to offer us indoor seating. While I looked at the menu ahead of time, Finneus provided us with detailed and knowledgeable recommendations. From the small plate and large plate reccs, to the wine pairings and table service throughout our meal, Finneus represented the establishment well and made it so that we can focus all of our energy on our company. While it was $18 for the croquettes, the flavors, textures and presentation were well enjoyed. The French Onion Soup was not bland (as described by another reviewer here), and in fact was pretty good for the cool rainy evening. Sure, maybe not the onion soup you'd get at a 5-star French restaurant, but certainly met our expectations and was just right for what we were looking for. The Duck Leg Cassoulet was hearty, complete with three different proteins (duck, venison sausage, and beans), and the Moules Frites Postales (not the original, but the other one) had much more of a profile than other mussel dishes in the area AND served with both French bread and fries. Could have done without the side of carrots. Probably will not order again, and instead maybe add another small plate as a starter. We look forward to returning for the steak during brunch. Overall, if you're looking for a top notch French restaurant, you may have your critiques. This is a warm and welcoming neighborhood restaurant with a creative concept. On prior visits, both the interior and patio seating have been comfortable. The food has been good. On this visit, my party of two arrived at 8:18pm on a weeknight without a reservation. There were numerous available tables. The balding and bitchy fellow at the door was reluctant to seat us, apparently so they could close earlier than the posted 9pm closing time. He chastised us for lacking a reservation and then threatened us that dining here would "be a better experience" with a reservation. We left and spent our money elsewhere. read more

Overall, this place is good and offers interesting French style dishes that are not so commonly found in other Austin restaurants. However, it is not perfect. Not the real thing, duck was a bit dry, sausage was spicy which it shouldn't be, and the beans probably weren't cooked with the meat. Not a real cassoulet, not by quite a bit. This is a cute little brunch spot. It's a bit pricey for what you get on a plate but at least the food is still good and the staff is friendly. I ordered the croque Madame which is sunny side up egg, ham, gruyere cheese, on top of toast with a side of salad. I'm not a big fan of ham but the taste wasn't too overwhelming. It was a good combo and perfect portion for a brunch meal. The place has limited indoor and outdoor seating. I'd suggest to make reservations ahead of time to ensure seating. The indoor seating is also a shared space with a little grocery store and a coffee bar. Plenty to explore after! It's also right next to a bookstore, so you can easily check it out and pick yourself a good book if you so desire. Parking wasn't difficult to find. The post office is our most reliable resource for getting things from here to there, and Bureau de Poste is a cute little French bistro adding similarly reliable charm to Hyde Park. The pairing with Tiny Grocer couldn't be more perfect - an array of the finest artisanal dry goods, pastries, grab & go prepared food, and all-day coffee/wine bar, alongside a casual-yet-modern bistro angled for proper people-watching indoors & out. I'll admit my experience of Jo Chan's menu was limited, and not as enjoyable as the atmosphere. We ordered the cheese & charcuterie boards with a Salad Lyonnaise (greens for balance!). While the cheese was lovely, selections didn't make sense with the nuts and honey provided, nor was there enough bread, so the plate didn't fully come together. The charcuterie included an incredible chicken liver mousse that was heavenly with jam from the cheese board, but independently was too large a portion with (again) not enough bread. Textures and flavors didn't excite the way I had hoped for the prices on these 2 boards, despite high quality ingredients. I absolutely love a Lyonnaise with frisée, but this one came with sparse, overcooked lardons, a vinegar-y (and otherwise flat) dressing, with the poached egg lost among sadly disparate flavors. The silver lining of course was our lovely server and a phenomenal salted chocolate chip cookie with a rose infused latte. Perfect ambiance for a return to check out more involved dishes on their full dinner menu - I hear this is where chef shines. read more

This place was fantastic!!! We went for brunch and it was exactly what I wanted on a Saturday morning. I had the croque madame (which they can make without ham!) and their claufoutis. I also tried an N/A drink (which was soo good) and a cappuccino. They had 4 N/A options!!! I'm exited to go back and try more. The staff was so welcoming and the ambience was relaxing. They have a covered outdoor patio with fans and misters so perfect for a weekend morning. It's also part of tiny grocer which has so many unique items. What a gem! read more

If Yelp allowed half points, Bureau de Poste would earn a solid 3.5. I took a friend for Sunday brunch to celebrate her birthday. The pluses were the (a) charming setting, (b) fantastic patio, (c) yummy omelet, (d) ample parking, and (e) potential to be amazing. The minuses were the (a) distracted hostesses and super-rushed brunch service even thought they were not particularly busy, (b) unremarkable soup, and (c) startlingly high price point for what you get. The complex is adorable in a movie set kind of way. I'm game to return for a second visit on a warmer day to sit outdoors, try a few more menu items, and see if we just caught the team on an off-day. read more

We liked our brunch at Bureau de Poste, located in The Little Grocer, which is actually exactly what it sounds like: a grocery store (but imagine a very cute, boutique-y Austin grocery store). We had a table inside, and there's an expansive patio outside that would be great if the weather is nice. I had the eggs benedict, which was a great rendition of that classic brunch item. (My only complaint was that it wasn't super hot? Totally fine but a little odd.) I also enjoyed my mimosa, which was wonderful. We enjoyed a great anniversary dinner at the Bureau de Poste! Food was delicious, service was outstanding. We enjoyed being able to go next door to the Tiny Grocer and pick out a wine to enjoy with dinner...not that they don't have a decent wine list, they do. Started with the Pomme Dauphine, the half chicken and the cassoulet for entrees, both were excellent. We had great service and nice conversation with Paden, and enjoyed a slice of awesome GF coffee cake for desert. We used to go here regularly with amazing food and service. It seems now that Chef Chan has left everything has gotten much worse. The service was just non existent- and the food was worse. The burger felt like a warmed up frozen patty , and the duck was lukewarm and overcooked. Sad that it's gone downhill, we really used to love it. read more

Our experience was amazing - great service, great food, in the perfect ambiance. I think Bureau de Poste is far underrated. I wholeheartedly disagree with the negative (or 3-star) reviews and overall rating of BDP (as of this writing). I think the restaurant has done a fabulous job and are on point for what I understand the aim to be. Great focused classic French in an relaxed ambiance. Service was great; Loretta took great care of us. Service was paced well; slower than some restaurants but I think that's the point here. We sat outside in a beautiful setting, and enjoyed a nice long meal. I think the intent is to slow down and take in the experience. Food is right on par with what I think great French food is. We had the duck confit cassoulet and Moules frites for entrees. Initially I was thinking the duck cassoulet would be too heavy as it comes with a duck leg and venison sausage link. But, actually, it was well balanced and perfectly executed. The duck leg was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. The mussels were great as well; the broth was flavorful and not overly rich, which I think sometimes happens and full bowl becomes too much. But Mussels here was done so well. Hat tip to chef and team. We also ordered Escargot and the trout tartare. First of all, I love raw trout so this is right inline with my palette. The dish was simple; buttery from the trout and olive oil finished with a light touch of citrus. Simple and reliant on the flavor of the trout. I like dishes that highlight the flavor of the ingredients as intended. Of course we had to finish with dessert. We had the dark chocolate mousse. Outstanding. (Although I will be back to try the crème brûlée...) Btw - the simple things such as bread - it was fresh, warm, and just expertly done. Having said that, I appreciate the simple menu as well. Some reviews complained of the shortened menu and wine list but again, I understood that to be the point and appreciate the fact. I had a terrific sparkling Pinot Blanc. Didn't need another option. Bureau de Poste review My wife and I were in Austin, TX, for the Thanksgiving holidays with my family. My youngest daughter lives in Austin with her husband, and they wanted to introduce me to Bureau de Poste, which is located in a small grocery store in a neighborhood.  I don't remember ever having "classic French food." It was always something inspired by France or someone's twist on it.  I grew up in the South, and most of my food was salt-heavy. And now, I have Addison's disease, which means my body wastes salt. I salt almost everything! No salt and pepper shakers on the table. Hmmmmm.  The good thing is, we didn't need them! The Sunday night special currently is Roast and mashed potatoes. My wife and son-in-law got that, and my daughter got her new favorite, the ratatouille. I have never had cassoulet, so I ordered the duck leg and venison sausage cassoulet.  We also ordered Haricot Vert and Asparagus sides.  We each tried some of the other's dishes.  This may seem a weird place to start after all the great entrees I mentioned, but I have never really liked green beans. Many green bean dishes have overcooked green beans, or they are crunchy but have no flavor.  My intro to these was nothing short of shock. Crunchy AND tasty! Really nice with the almonds and some bacon with an amazing sauce. I would have eaten the whole thing if I hadn't been with my family, who I love dearly. It required some self-control and choices! The asparagus was also good. The thing about that is the cook on it. Not too long or too short. The perfect amount of crunch with a cooked-through spear.  The roast was so tender and tasty. It was not dry in any way and was full of flavor.  I tried my wife's mashed potatoes. They were perfectly seasoned and creamy--I would have done well with that, too! I also tried my daughter's ratatouille. WOW! What a flavor burst of tomatoes. So very tasty! My dish was so good also. Duck leg was perfectly cooked with some crisp on the outside, tender soft on the inside, and fantastic flavor. As well for the venison sausage. So good. The beans had texture yet were smooth and creamy. We got the Creme Brûlée and a Toffee dark chocolate mousse with torched meringues for dessert. The contrast between them was perfect. Vanilla sweet and that dark chocolate, caramel, toffee bite! SO GOOD! We couldn't have eaten anything else. The service was excellent as well. This review is very hard for me to write as I truly, truly really like Jo Chan and Tiny Grocer and had high hopes and could not wait to try this new place! But this review needs to be transparent. In spite of all of the 5 star reviews given on Opentable from the friends & family pre-opening....this is NOT a 5 star restaurant. At least not yet. Hopefully, in the future, but not near yet. This review is the opinion of 4 adults that dined here this evening. First of all, the presentation of the every single dish was beautiful. The menu selection is enticing. Small but covers the bases. Then comes the actual food. The trout small plate and the escargot were super underwhelming due to lack of seasoning. Mostly lacking salt on both and acid on the raw trout. Shocking. Bland beyond words. Then came the entrees. The half chicken had a beautiful presentation but lacked serious flavor....again, lack of seasoning. It was also a bit dry. The mussels entree was lacking in broth and what was there was not flavorful at all. Again, needed seasoning and a touch of acid or flavorful fat. The steak frites was ordered medium rare plus and was served rare, almost black & blue. Cold in the middle and no change of texture. The thing that surprised us most, was the au poivre! Steak au poivre is traditionally served with pan peppercorn sauce consisting of reduced cognac, heavy cream, and the fond from the bottom of the pan, often including other ingredients such as butter, shallots, and/or Dijon mustard. This had none of those flavors. The sauce actually had zero flavor but maybe a hint of butter. All 4 of us agreed. Huge disappointment. The fries were average. The aioli they were served with was good. The wine list is very short. They were actually out of the only bottle of wine that we were interested in after only being open for one day. What??!! Oh and on a less important side note, the kid's hamburger was atrocious. Dry and overcooked, plus the meat to bun ratio was way off. Our huge hamburger eater pushed through eating half and then said "I'm done. I don't like it". He filled up fries after that. The service was very good but a bit overwhelmed with tables but we totally understood. The ambiance on the patio is very nice, is spacious with a covered area and misters. Two cleans, air conditioned, gender neutral bathrooms in the patio area. We will try again, probably in 6 months or so, in hopes of getting what we hoped for this first time. Please season your food...and ask if the steak is cooked correctly. It's $48. These seem like minor things to overcome, so here's hoping! read more

Beautiful thoughtful design by thoughtbarn architects, quality thoughtful servers, master baristas, amazing pastry chef and executive chef --best omelette, hands-down -very hard to make a true French omelette they did it!! Try the clafoutis with berries and crème fraiche - just the right amount of sweetness made even lighter with berries! Great partner to my cappuccino! The other favorite at our table was the steak frites served with eggs, crispy fries with a garlicky aioli! All our dishes dishes were pretty to look at and quite filling! They have a cute dog friendly patio that's perfect for outdoor dining weather like today's! Our server, Mark was delightful and attentive! We will be back to try other dishes! read more
