We had a good time, but I was definitely expecting a better, smoother experience. The food was fine. Service was a little bumpy, including miscommunication between staff and then with the person busing our table, who repeatedly tried to take things we were still eating. I don't have any big complaints, but I'd probably go elsewhere before returning here since we have such a great variety of choices for a higher-end brunch. We had a crepe which was fine, two burgers which were good, the eggs benedict with avocado, which was fine, smoked fish tray (the best thing we had, but way more fish than we could have possibly fit onto the single bagel). The other favorite at our table was the steak frites served with eggs, crispy fries with a garlicky aioli! All our dishes dishes were pretty to look at and quite filling! I was conflicted on how I wanted to rate Bureau de Poste. It has the cutest vibe and I'd love to hang out here for hours catching up with friends. It's not way too loud or crowded like a lot of restaurants and it just feels intimate. The people who work here are also all so wonderful and make the experience so much better. That being said, I've been less than impressed with some (not all) the dishes. First and foremost, the two times I've tried the mussels, they had a super bland salt-watery sauce and I kept finding gravel in them. The poisson à la planche was really tough and under-seasoned. There are also some really delicious items on the menu! The ocean trout tartare is AMAZING and one of my favorites. The ratatouille isn't bad. The French onion soup has super rich flavors and is perfectly cheesy. And I never get to have clafoutis except when I visit my mom and she makes it for me, so I was very excited to find a place that makes in it Austin :) so overall, we had a great experience but will be avoiding those two dishes in the future! read more

Well designed interior with indoor and plentiful outdoor seating. Dinner menu was great and not overwhelming. The overall experience was pretty good. The tartare was okay, a little bit strong with the mustard taste, but it was decent. The scallop was good if you like mango sauce, escargot was good but needed a little bit of extra flavor, maybe garlic the burger was the best will come back for that. First visit here. We dined outside on the very nice patio. The Pomme Dayphine was quite a surprise of flavor and texture. The French Onion Soup was very good. Full body and full flavor broth. The bread was larger croutons which I really enjoyed because it was still a bit crunchy. The Beef Tartare was also another great surprise of flavor. I had never tried this before and now I will order much more often. However, each order will be compared to this version which is a high bar to set. The Half Chicken was very well done as the meat was not too dry or too moist which is a rare thing these days. The Steak Frites was delicious and had three different versions of sauces or toppings. The one we ordered was without any of them. The ratatouille was a bit of a disappointment. It was a bit on the bitter side. I love eggplant, Zuchini, tomatoes, onions and sauce and feel I could make a better version myself. However, everything else was outstanding!! We could smell the coffee during our dinner so we had some after with dessert. It did not disappoint and mine was decaf. Too many times we order decaf in nice restaurants and it is not good. I was surprised it was in a grocery store-- not quite the vision I had of a quaint bistro. Parking was a nightmare. The service was horrible. It is a very small place. Took 20 to get a glass of wine and 30 for a cheese board! Waitress was nice but horrible at her job. We had to wave her over several times, and she was on her phone a lot. Dinner took about a hour to get. The food was less than okay. The French onion soup lacked depth of flavor, bordering on bland, as did most everything else. What we got was a casual high-end restaurant in a gourmet high-end grocery. Atmosphere was fun. Service, friendly and attentive. The food was very simple, no frills, well prepared. We arrived early to avoid crowd, ordered 3 entrees, 3 glasses of wine, one dessert. No appetizers. No happy hour. $200+. Not outrageous , but it was a bare minimum meal -- not what I was expecting for an early bite. I might return for special food gifts or to try the mussels, but not sure this is the casual drop-by neighborhood place I had hoped for. We had a family brunch at this restaurant and were very disappointed with the experience and food. The service was okay, until the waiter told me I could not order the moules frites - they had very few left and were saving them for dinner service. I strongly recommend the front staff get trained on how to manage these types of things - that's not a five star waiter experience. The food, was lackluster. Below are the lowlights. Crepe dish: No flavor whatsoever. Nothing. Might as well be eating rice cakes. Burgers: It was OKay, but way too expensive. Should be a $17 burger and not a $23 burger. Smoked fish plate: it's just a fancy way of describing bagel and lox. I was expecting a roulette type of smoked fish preparation...but seriously just a deconstructed bagel and lox. Fries: Amazing! That's it. Verdict: good enough to maybe get fries to go...but that's assuming you are okay paying $9 for a side order of fries. read more

Beautiful, amazing place with great staff. But especially after reading reviews, this place needs to hire an actual chef that knows how to cook consistent french food. Especially if you are serving french food, you better know how to cook it. I got the opposite of what folks are reviewing here, about a half a shaker of salt in our muscles. Then 2nd time around, no salt at all and the chef didn't bother to cook the alcohol off the wine. Making me curious if that was a spite dish. Everything else was wonderful! Perfect stake, desserts amazing. Staff soo nice. Its just such a shame this makes all the hard work everyone else is doing reflects badly because they can't get in a good chef. read more

Bought a $45 box of chocolate ($5/piece) from the store - and found the chocolates bad, frankly. and after trying to return it to the store about 15 minutes after buying the box after eating 2 pieces and being really disappointed, they refused the return, didn't offer a discount or even apologies. I left the box on the counter and am now forced to challenge the credit card charge. The man at the desk said I should just do that, he thought. A really unfortunate, uninformed customer experience. You can't have the kind of clientele you have in this neighborhood and this kind of pricing and then not offer anything at all when someone buys something expensive and is unhappy. Especially for a family that just spent over $300 at the restaurant side of this place for a dinner minutes earlier. Would have been simple to offer half off or a gift certificate for future use or something. Lots of ways they could have resolved at no net cost to themselves. read more

I have to agree with Pamela R. that this restaurant is not quite ready for prime time yet. I will also hold off returning until they get their... food game up and running. Decor and ambiance they have in spades. Lovely service. We ordered the endive salad-- beautifully arranged leaves in the plate. I got excited b/c they were dark and I thought some of them had been cooked-- a nice touch, I thought, being a fan of cooked endive. But no. Just dark purple red. Not a problem, just a little less thoughtful flare to the technique than I had thought. More importantly, the salad was very light on the cheese, citrus fruit, and hazelnuts that made up the topping. It was lovely and light but there wasn't much to it. As vegetarians, we have modest expectations of main dishes at French-ish restaurants. We ordered the ratatouille and a side of carrots. There wasn't much there there. It was kind of like a bowl of spaghetti sauce with some sliced zucchini on top. Sorry! But true. Really not a main dish and not really a ratatouille. It would have been nice with a good bit of cheese -- there was none -- or maybe... something like chickpeas? Now I'm just suggesting crazy stuff that's not traditional to ratatouille, but you know, it really needed ...something. The carrots were tasty and the flavor was enhanced by a tad of goat cheese. But small. Small side dish. I was telling my husband that in Paris this dish would at least come with a bit of lovely baguette for soaking up the sauce and adding some substance when we saw the table next to us for a bread side dish. So we ordered that. Should have come with, if you ask me. And it was not a tasty Parisian baguette, sadly. Just like five meager slices of a not great baguette-like bread. I should mention the wine was nice and the sommelier came out and explained it well. But it was a $45 bottle... that given the price of basic items in Tiny Grocer and my overall underwhelmedness with the meal kinda rubs me the wrong way. Also the dessert, a chocolate mousse, was ok but not great. So... great potential. Lovely ambience. Great waiter and sommelier. There was also pleasant live music. Nice to be outside on a pleasant evening. But I won't be back until and unless the food is invested with as much care and technique and substance as the ambiance. We've eaten at Bureau de Poste 3 times now, and our first two experiences were lovely - we enjoyed the food and the service. Stand out dishes were the Pommes Dauphine, Endive Salad, Duck Cassoulet, and Steak Frites. Sadly our most recent visit was a birthday dinner for my mother - we were seated late (7:30 for our 7:00 reservation) and then felt rushed through the whole service. My mother's first choice of entree wasn't available, and the server didn't do much to offer alternatives. While we were eating our dinner, the waiter informed us it was last call for coffee service. As they cleared our plates and offered dessert, they told us it was last call for bar service. I understand that the restaurant closes at 9:00, but there were still 3-4 tables being served on the patio as we were ushered out. It wasn't as lovely an experience as our previous visits, and certainly not the birthday dinner I'd hoped to provide for my mom. read more

I met friends here for brunch and it makes for a fun day out. After brunch you can explore Tiny Grocer where the restaurant resides. The large windows let the sun in and the staff are incredibly attentive and available. I had the French onion soup which had a lovely pull from the cheese when spooning. The bread was crispy enough that it didn't get soggy and there is a bit of sherry in the soup which gives it a robust flavor. I did add salt. I also had the yogurt parfait. I did added honey because it wasn't quite sweet enough for me. The fries were perfectly crisp and hot with a nice side of mayonnaise. We shared the Clafoutis, which I felt could be just a tad sweeter, but it's good if you like something a bit tart. A touch that might be nice like many French restaurants that I would recommend, would be to serve French bread with a side of French butter and sea salt with compliments. A little detail like that would make people feel like they are getting the full experience. Overall a lovely location and experience. Went to BDP last night. Service was super attentive and wonderful. Food was a bit of a mixed game. Our first appetizer was the pomme dauphine. Magic. For entree, we had the cassoulet and steak frites. While others mentioned that the duck in the cassoulet was dry, I found it to be absolutely fine and delicious. What I didn't understand about the dish is why it was so sparse on beans. Consistency was just off for this (usually one of my favorites). Our second appetizer was the escargot which were just okay. When you have a great escargot it just pops with garlic and herbs. The protein becomes half of the story and the rest is the delicious sauce and if we're lucky, sometimes a bit of puff pastry. Deserts were crazy good, we had the brûlée and closfautis and both were delish! All in all a lovely restaurant that I hope will improve over time. Won't be going back next week but look forward to seeing how they've evolved in a few months. Wonderful evening and you will enjoy a night out here, especially on the patio. read more

Look, I've had a lot of steak in Austin. Perry's, Bob's, Vince Young's, 3 Forks, you name it I've had it. Overall, the service was fine. Wait staff were nice and friendly. No complaints on the staff, nothing over the top. As for the food. . The Beef tartar was good, an excellent delivery of a classic. They didn't try anything too inventive but delivered solid beef tartar. One of the better ones I've had in Austin, as they didn't try to use goofy bread or additions in it. Pomme Dauphine, it was so close to being great. The idea of Salmon Roe to add saltiness was a good attempt, but far too subtle. The potato mash was missing something I couldn't put my finger on. Steak Frities au Poivre. Folks, this is legit. This is hands down the second best steak dish I've had here in Austin, and the only one to top it was 250.00 A5 from 3 forks. The sauce, steak, seasoning, everything was so utterly rich and magnificent. Paired with a pale ale to cut the fat and richness, I was blown away by how well this was executed. To be honest, the dish "Steak Frites" gets a bad name here as places like Applebees has it. I would rename to traditional french steak au poivre or something, it because this is leaps and bounds above any stek I've had elsewhere, and frankly at 48 bucks it's a steal. read more

First, make a reservation!! This place is tiny but awesome. Inside the Tiny Grocer and next to a cute little bookstore is this amazing restaurant. We wanted to try a few things so we shared an app, an entree, and a dessert. The Pomme were so good I could have eaten 4 servings. The ratatouille was so tasty, but this eggplant lover would have enjoyed a bit more eggplant. The chocolate mousse was a delicious way to end the meal. We've been there for brunch and dinner - a total of four times. It's a welcome, excellent addition to the neighborhood. Hopefully it will be a neighborhood fixture for decades. We tried to share this feedback with the owners, but they don't provide an email address on their website - so they've relegated us to providing our feedback in a public manner. So our first point is that perhaps they should provide an email address on their website - so that their customers can provide feedback in a non-public manner. Our other feedback: The space and food are great and the wine/food selection at the grocer are great. But the restaurant service has some room for improvement. E.g., (1) Last week our order was chaotic and served wildly out of sequence. One waiter said they'd comp an appetizer. Another waiter said they'd comp a drink. (We didn't ask for any comps, btw.) After we paid and left the restaurant, we realized that they didn't comp an appetizer and they also didn't comp a drink - or anything else. If you're going to try to make up for a bad experience by twice offering a comp, then you should probably deliver on that - or it just compounds the disappointment. (2) During a late weekend brunch, with fewer than 50% of the tables occupied, they refused to put onions on the burger. They made it sound like it was a complicated, unusual request that would overwhelm the kitchen - when it'd actually take less time for them to add the onions that our strained conversation about them took. read more

Not worth it. Like, literally too expensive for what it is. And here's why: the concept does not deliver. The look and feel of the place says either smart bistro with a hip take on the usual fare (which is what they are trying to do, I think) or something different, delightful and surprising, like a French restaurant in a converted post office that's also a grocery store. I ordered the burger -- it's a very fair test for this type of place. Everything was lukewarm except the ice cold brick of Brie wedged between the toasted (yet mysteriously chilly) roll. Two basic patties and nothing else that I could taste. Meh frites too. Mayo on the side. I thought to ask for Dijon or maybe order another glass of the Boxt pinot, which was good. The food was overpriced, but what upset me more was that the money I spent was going to a business that clearly doesn't value its staff. My boyfriend carefully crafted a restaurant list for our first trip as a couple. I noticed he added this restaurant... must be because he knows how much I love French cuisine. Is he trying to impress me? As we studied the menu, our expectations soared. We especially had high hopes for this place considering it was also on the Austin Eater's "Hottest New Restaurants" list. I made a reservation for Friday night. We got dolled up, and headed out to meet our friends. We carefully picked some items of the menu to share. Pomme Dauphine, French Onion Soup, Duck Leg Cassoulet, and Haricot Vert. First up; French Onion soup. The biggest disappointment of them all. Each spoonful revealed a flavorless abyss. My boyfriend desperately asking for salt. Pomme Dauphine, $18 guys? For four croquettes? Really? The Duck Leg Cassoulet... such minuscule portion size added insult to injury, what sad lookin legumes stared back at us. The Haricot Vert should have been a free side. I contemplated whether this weak sauce culinary disappointment was an unintentional test of our relationship's resilience. The only thing that impressed me that night was how my boyfriend impressed my friends and the glass of Gewürztraminer he ordered. We are now planning to make French Onion soup at home ...
