I've always loved black bear diner for their pancakes, but today they had just the best service. I've recently been diagnosed with a soy allergy, after frequently having stomach aches daily... today I asked if I could just know if they add oil to the pancake mix. The manager came out, asked about my allergy, and made sure to make everything separate, said the cooks would clean off the cook surface just in case. Just ordered a pick up to go order and really horrible experience. On the weekends I like to get my parents breakfast and lunch, so this weekend I decided to try Black Bear Diner. First off, I get it's Saturday morning and probably the busiest time of the week but the gal that was doing take out orders was very unhappy. She handed me the bag and coffee without even smiling or a thank you. She even ran off so fast that I didn't even get to tell her that my father's cheesecake was missing. The younger guy was also semi helpful looking for my order too and went into the back a few times, at least he greeted me. Thank you to the other woman at the register (she had a choker necklace on). She was super helpful and even asked my name to make sure the orders that came out weren't mine, so I wouldnt just sit there....she even did this while cashing out other diners. She even helped me get the cheesecake and strawberry topping. I gave these stars to her, she needs a raise and an employee of the month award! Lastly, when opening the orders at my parents house my mother found a short/blonde hair in her scrambled eggs! Ugh...come on guys. I am so disappointed in this Black Bear after a very mediocre experience tonight. The service was unfriendly and extremely sloooooow. The lady seemed overworked as it took 10 minutes her to come over and take our drink order. Then she took the order and took excessively long to get the drinks back to us. We were ready to order but she went away again and said she'd be back to take orders. Another five or 10 minutes pass... At this point we have been here in almost a half an hour already. The she forgot to put in one of the items in the order so we had to wait even longer for that item to come after everyone else was still eating. This was our first time coming to this blackbear and I don't think we will ever be back. The sad thing is the food is pretty good once it gets out but the service was very poor today. There was also food crumbs on the floor at our table as we sat down and the ceiling fan kept tapping rather loudly as one of the strings bounced off the lightbulb. Another weird thing was they put the gravy on the top of the top half of the biscuit, which is not normal(see picture) Maybe that's the way they roll but we are used to the gravy sitting on the soft part of the biscuit. I'm sure the wait staff is overworked and underpaid but I felt like the service was lacking here for that reason will probably never be back read more

Basically no dairyfree dressing for my salad and they put sour cream container on my plate touching my ribs after I said no sour cream. Plus I said no bbq sauce but they still drowned my ribs in it. We arrived at the Gilbert, AZ Black Bear Diner today around 9:10 am. Had to wait a few minutes for Hostess to come and take us to a table, and gave us menus. After that we waited for over 15 minutes or more for the waitress " Amafis" to show up and take our order. Then another 15 mins or more she finally came back with our Hot Tea. After another 20-30 mins it seemed she brought food to another table across from us that ordered a lot more food then we did. And she brought my partner his CornBeef Hash. Then stated she would be back with my food, 5 mins later or more, another waitress brought my food. My Toast was cold, Potatoes were luck warm some of then, rest was cold and my supposedly Ham, Mushroom, Cheese Omelet was cold on edges and luke warm in the middle. But it looked like they folded over the eggs, put ham dices and one mushroom covered with cheese on top. Yes, she did comp my food, but not once came back to refill our water pots, ask if everything was fine. She came back and seen that I put my napkin over my food and pushed it away and then asked. She offered to make it again, But why would I do that and wait who knows how long and if it would of been hot. Will never go back there again, Terrible service and low quality of food. read more

We split the pancakes but they were quite bland but nice and fluffy . The eggs were fluffy and bacon crispy and thick how I like it. The staff was also very courteous. The Biggest Biscuits I've Ever Seen!!! I had never been here before and came for a breakfast work meeting. I got the country fried steak and it came with the biggest biscuits I've ever seen! Since it was a work thing I didn't take pictures show show the massive size, but they were about the size of a mans fists. The chicken was good, the service was friendly and all worked out great. This place was pretty jam packed with customers so it must be a favorite for lots of people. Maybe I'll go here again and make a more detailed review next time. read more

First time eating at this location. When you walk in they have a bunch of cute black bear stuffed animals for sale. The first thing you notice though if you're really hungry are the perfect looking pies on display. We ordered the chili cheeseburger. The burger was cooked medium which is what I ordered. It was delicious and the fries were cooked perfectly. It was a little too salty for my taste but better than no salt at all. Cecilie was our waitress and she was very attentive as well as sweet. Ordered takeout the other night...instead of getting a side of veggies like requested, they just threw in a tiny a$$ piece of corn on the cob. The strawberry milkshake was completely melted and we showed up 1 minute after the time we were supposed to pickup our meal. Mind you, my bf was really sick all day and just wanted to eat something filling. They completely forgot the lemonade that was clearly stated on the receipt on the side of the bag, so I had to go in and ask for that. When I got in the car and tasted the lemonade, it was just water. Not lemonade! So I just paid $3.39 extra for a glass of water....cool. Then when we get home, which is only 3mons away, half of the BLAND French fries were soggy and there was the smallest amount of gravy on my bfs country friend steak. Like it didn't even cover half of the 10oz steak....ridiculous! Im extremely bummed about how pitiful the service was because I refer this restaurant to so many people and tell them how amazing the food is...obviously something has changed and made the place so much worse. I went to that establishment with my parents, aunt and uncle Saturday the food was great. My issue is that we split the check when I got home I realized that both credit cards were changed the total amount of the whole check. So we double paid the tip. I had called that same night and spoke to Alexis she said she couldn't revise my check and that she would let her manager know. To this day I haven't heard anything back... I went here for breakfast several times in the last couple years and it's been good. The service has always been friendly. That last time I ate here, I got the scramble, the one that comes in a cast iron skillet with potatoes on the bottom. The potatoes were warm and looked like they'd been boiled and cup up instead of fried, and the whole dish wasn't hot, just barely warm. But it was filling and I was hungry! Another time, I had the pancakes and a Bearclaw French toast, omg, HEAVEN! Their Denver omelets are really good, too! My mom ordered ONE biscuit and gravy to-go today and wondered why they charged her more this time, as she's not a big eater and has gotten this before. Turns out she was charged for two biscuits. They gave her a HUGE bag, (so wasteful!!) and her biscuits were hard, and old, stale. I hope next time they will do better with the biscuits, when it's done right, they are soft and fluffy. We tried ordering online for delivery because we didn't want to go anywhere. We live real close to this location and I saw that the driver came directly to our house from the restaurant but the food still arrived cold which was too bad. Reading the reviews on this location that's par for the course as people get cold food in the restaurant too. The food was good and a decent portion for breakfast. The thing I did not like is you are REQUIRED to order a drink ($3) with every meal. There was no way to get out of it. I don't like buying things I don't want so I won't be ordering online again from this place. So one star off for cold food and one for forced drink orders. read more

This place is not bad. It's affordable and spacious. Me and my wife had lunch here for under $40 and that's with 15 percent tip included. Though I didn't like that the waiters were also the cashier, and our waitress only filled my wife beverage and not mine twice. I also didn't like that she would use the same glass every time. Not usually a fan of pancakes but they are irresistible at Black Bear. You can just let a bite melt in your mouth with the flavors of vanilla, butter and syrup. Went here for breakfast and it's was good. Went back a couple weeks later for dinner, and it was like walking into a different place. The staff were really rude, and our waiter kept calling me "man". What happened to "Sir and ma'am"? I ordered the Bigfoot country fried steak, and they brought me 2 small steaks instead with no explanation. When asked they said that they were out of the Bigfoot. Usually if your out of something that a customer orders you inform them and ask if they would like a substitution, you don't substitute for them. Calling your customers "man" never gets you a good tip. read more

I stopped in for brunch as I was from out of town. It was me and one other person. There was a party of 2 in front of us that got sat right away. Then a party of 1 that got sat at a booth for 2 people. When we approach the podium the hostess says, it will be a 30-40 minute wait. We expressed our shock and she says "we have about 20 2s in front of you". If that was the case, they wouldn't have sat the guy by himself at a booth for 2 - there was a diner bar he could have sat at. I'm sure the "20 2s" in front of us would have appreciated his table!! Not only were they inefficient at seating people in a timely matter, but they were rude about it - not to mention I'm pretty sure they were lying about the wait.
