Janna to the rescue as our favorite server had to leave, but she picks up the extra tables on a busy Thursday morning and our birthday breakfast continued with all the fine service that we expect at BBD. They are known for their large portions so there is plenty of good food. The service is friendly and they are glad to see you, it's family. This place is not bad. It's affordable and spacious. Me and my wife had lunch here for under $40 and that's with 15 percent tip included. Though I didn't like that the waiters were also the cashier, and our waitress only filled my wife beverage and not mine twice. I also didn't like that she would use the same glass every time. Went here for breakfast and it's was good. Went back a couple weeks later for dinner, and it was like walking into a different place. The staff were really rude, and our waiter kept calling me "man". What happened to "Sir and ma'am"? I ordered the Bigfoot country fried steak, and they brought me 2 small steaks instead with no explanation. When asked they said that they were out of the Bigfoot. Usually if your out of something that a customer orders you inform them and ask if they would like a substitution, you don't substitute for them. Calling your customers "man" never gets you a good tip. read more

I love me some BBD!!!! Their food is made with such great quality ingredients and the service is always spectacular. I typically get the spicy patty sausage with biscuits and gravy. U get the choice of hash browns or country potatoes. I def prefer the country potatoes and suggest them if u like ur potatoes crunchy. My husband loves the Hobo omelet. Then we share a pancake. Not usually a fan of pancakes but they are irresistible at Black Bear. You can just let a bite melt in your mouth with the flavors of vanilla, butter and syrup. I stopped in for brunch as I was from out of town. It was me and one other person. There was a party of 2 in front of us that got sat right away. Then a party of 1 that got sat at a booth for 2 people. When we approach the podium the hostess says, it will be a 30-40 minute wait. We expressed our shock and she says "we have about 20 2s in front of you". If that was the case, they wouldn't have sat the guy by himself at a booth for 2 - there was a diner bar he could have sat at. I'm sure the "20 2s" in front of us would have appreciated his table!! Not only were they inefficient at seating people in a timely matter, but they were rude about it - not to mention I'm pretty sure they were lying about the wait. I come to this area quite often and I can confidently say that I would not ever choose this as a brunch spot again. read more

We tried ordering online for delivery because we didn't want to go anywhere. We live real close to this location and I saw that the driver came directly to our house from the restaurant but the food still arrived cold which was too bad. Reading the reviews on this location that's par for the course as people get cold food in the restaurant too. The food was good and a decent portion for breakfast. The thing I did not like is you are REQUIRED to order a drink ($3) with every meal. There was no way to get out of it. I don't like buying things I don't want so I won't be ordering online again from this place. So one star off for cold food and one for forced drink orders. read more

Came in for breakfast this morning. I had the corned beef hash, and my partner had the cinnamon roll French toast. The corned beef is shredded, which is a step up from the minced cat food from a can, that you get at most other places. It wasn't seasoned particularly well though. The hashbrowns and eggs also had no salt or pepper on them. For an extra dollar, I had one biscuit with gravy. The biscuit was nice and soft, but the gravy was bland. The cinnamon roll French toast didn't come with the icing described in the menu. My girlfriend didn't care for the sausage either. Service was OK. It took a while for the waitress to check on us, and get the lack of icing issue fixed. I wanted to like this place, and if the cook would season the food, and remember to get everything on the plate, I would have enjoyed it much more. I wouldn't be opposed to going back, but with so many other good restaurants nearby, I wouldn't pick this place either. read more

I ordered the fish and chips for my Friday night dinner last night and had it delivered. It was the worse tasting food I had ever had. It came ice cold and the driver picked it up and drove it straight to me. The fries were soggy. I also got a slice of chocolate cake and that had a weird flavor. I went here for breakfast several times in the last couple years and it's been good. The service has always been friendly. That last time I ate here, I got the scramble, the one that comes in a cast iron skillet with potatoes on the bottom. The potatoes were warm and looked like they'd been boiled and cup up instead of fried, and the whole dish wasn't hot, just barely warm. But it was filling and I was hungry! Another time, I had the pancakes and a Bearclaw French toast, omg, HEAVEN! Their Denver omelets are really good, too! My mom ordered ONE biscuit and gravy to-go today and wondered why they charged her more this time, as she's not a big eater and has gotten this before. Turns out she was charged for two biscuits. They gave her a HUGE bag, (so wasteful!!) and her biscuits were hard, and old, stale. I hope next time they will do better with the biscuits, when it's done right, they are soft and fluffy. Please stop serving your old biscuits, Black Bear! I didn't give 5 stars because of that. read more

This is my favorite breakfast spot. Hands down. And guess what I discovered today? They have free delivery oct 8-14. I ordered breakfast and breakfast for dinner. I had not planned on putting on pants today, what can I say? Usually I dine in, but now that I know delivery is an option I think lazy Sunday is now extra. I love when breakfast comes on a platter. The service is ALWAYS great when you dine in. Hashbrowns are always crispy. Bacon is always thick and crispy. Biscuits are great. The pancakes are fluffy and the non regular flour ones (can't remember what they are made of) are ridiculously good, and heavy, like hold your togo contained with two hands heavy otherwise it breaks. My family has been wanting to try this restaurant for awhile now. We went today and mine and my daughter's food was inedible. Food was cold and the sauce had a weird taste. We asked for them to bring us some hot food and it was obviously at least most of it been microwaved to reheat. My daughter's chicken fried steak was so hard she thought it would break a tooth. Years ago, I reviewed the Black Bear Diner's original restaurant in Mount Shasta, California. I have a soft spot in my heart for this chain because it started essentially in my hometown's back yard, in a remote northern part of California that some call the State of Jefferson. You can see on their placemat, a black bear framed by the snow covered peaks of the extinct volcano, Mt. Shasta, in the background. I am pleased as punch that they have a franchise in Gilbert now that I am living in Arizona. The food here is some solid, stick-to-your-ribs comfort food. The portions are huge. And it has that old-fashioned diner food vibe. This has been covered in many of the reviews posted by my fellow Yelpers. However, there are some unique nuances at this diner that you might have missed... For one, they sell their own line of hot sauces. This includes Baby Burn (original cayenne), Mama Burn (green jalapeño), and Papa Burn (habañero). I am hooked on the Papa Burn, even though I'm not a huge habañero hot sauce fan. My tastes tend towards the cayenne and chipotle varieties, but this Papa Burn sauce is special. It has some serious heat from the habañero, but the best component is the infused black pepper flavor. Try it the next time you're here and you might just buy a bottle to go (like I did). The other thing you may have missed is that the Black Bear Diner serves craft beer! Hop Rod Rye Specialty Ale and Big Bear Black Stout are the two offerings they carry from the Bear Republic Brewery. I have tried neither of these, but they sound delicious! I tend to frequent Black Bear Diner for breakfast, and really haven't made beer with breakfast a habit since college. I know the Yreka, California Black Bear Diner restaurant used to serve a special label craft beer brewed at the Etna Brewery, so I was pleased to see that the beery bear tradition continues at this Gilbert restaurant. read more

We visited January 29, 2022. Table of four and everything was delicious! Highly recommend the eggs Benedict, biscuits and gravy and stuffed French toast. The restaurant was very clean. There's a wide variety of items to choose from on the menu. Our service was great!! Kaitlyn (spelling??), our waitress was great! Since I'm not a big fan of pancakes I have to tell you this place makes some marvelous pancakes. Made with real cream -you can taste the difference. Deliciousness. And they're big too. This is a darn good breakfast place so if you come during regular breakfast hours on the weekend I'm pretty sure you're going to encounter a crowd as well as a wait. Servers are usually pleasant, skilled, and efficient. Food coming out of kitchen seems to be consistent. Parking lot is iffy, but c'mon, that seems to be the only bad. We were in town for a baseball tournament & excited to try something not from our home town & saw this place on yelp. It was my husband, our daughter & his son, and we had originally asked for 2 tables, 1 where my stepson could sit with his biological mom who wanted to have breakfast with him & 1 for my husband and I and our daughter. We get there wait about 15 min & they got our tables wrong & threw all 5 of us in a small 4 person booth. I was -NOT- happy, I advised staff & they mentioned they had 1 table and we'd have to wait +45 min for a table for my husband and I with our daughter. I bit my tongue as we were STARVING after a baseball game, and sat with the "other" parent. My husband is a bigger guy so I was hanging off the side of the booth, we ordered, and waited about 1/2 an hr for food. There was no sugar for our coffee on the table and it took 15 min to flag our waiter down for some. It was busy so I tried not to be more upset than I already was, (I was fuming) as we were waiting a busser passed by and dropped a dirty fork on my leg which was hanging off the seat and the prongs went into my thigh. He quickly picked it up apologizing saying that's not right and left. I was in flames at this point, we received our food and my eggs were cold. I tried to flag our waitress down but she was busy & to be honest I just wanted to get the hell out of there & not wait for even warm food. I was pretty disappointed in this place as everything seemed so chaotic and trying to get service was rough. I try to be patient with restaurant staff & see silver lining in enriching but this was a car wreck as soon as our 2 tables weren't accommodated for. We won't be back. read more

The decor is detailed and interesting. They have wood carved bears inside and out, and even engraved in the benches. The menu is in the form of a newspaper and super cute. Food was delicious. I'd been wanting to try Black Bear Diner for a while but this experience soured me on the place. We were visiting Tempe and were pretty hungry so we decided to make the trip here to Gilbert. We were sat in a small back room due to COVID seating I assume. Not even sure if the room was meant to be a dining area as it looked sort of makeshift and temporary. The table was small and uncomfortable, but when we asked to move, the lady seating us said that's all they had. The food on the menus looked decent enough but we unfortunately didn't get that far. Flies all over. A couple of large ones buzzing around the table and for good measure, a dead fruit fly on the lemon in my wife's drink. If you want a diner experience just go to the Denny's across the street. Don't waste your time here. After waiting two hours between getting seated and waiting for our food to come out, I was so hungry I didn't care that the food was severely undercooked and cold. I Seriously. This place was so bad. We went there to have a birthday brunch for my dad and it was so devastatingly awful we couldn't even be mad or upset that his special day was off to a terrible start. It was so bad it was laughable. Soooooo when I initially thought about writing this review I did not think I would be giving this place 2 stars. I mean I really thought it would be better than that because everyone I know recommended it and suggested it. First let me say that I honestly did not like the interior and the decor. It reminded me of an old restaurant in need of a makeover. The carpet was dirty and in need of sweeping. The wait was not that bad because I called ahead. We were seated and the waitress was there pretty quickly. We ordered drinks and pigs in a blanket for the kids and took a few minutes to look over the menu. We decided on Huevos Rancheros per the waitress suggestion and the California bacon Benedict. When the food arrived the portions were rather large. Just on first look the food looked like slop. Huevos Rancheros beans were like out of a can and chorizo I couldn't even find. The tortilla on the bottom was suppose to be flat and it was burned and curled up. And oh the worst of all we're the hash browns. Soggy. Soft and bland. Honestly nothing could save this meal. The California Benedict was a little better but still not up to par. The hollandaise sauce was so unappetizing and had no flavor. The whole dish needed salt. Needles to say we did not finish either meal. As I sat there waiting for the kids to finish the pigs in a blanket I decided to try them and they were actually really good. This is the reason for the 2 stars and not 1. For a few minutes sitting there I watched the plates come out of the kitchen and everything looked burned.
