First things first, it was hot in the restaurant, potentially the A/C was not working as well as it should have been or something, but it was not super comfortable. The service was good, I didn't get her name, a younger woman waited on me and she was very kind and did the best she could. The food came out super slow, I ordered empanadas to start, the waitress said they burned the first order (I appreciated that didn't just serve me overdone empanadas lol) once they finally arrived they were just unfortunately bland, and just kind of lacked authenticity. When she finally brought out my main dish, she even apologized for the wait and said "I had to go yell at them". For a main entree I ordered the French dip with onion rings, another reviewer mentioned they were the best they had had. The meat was kind of tough and dry (which is odd for a French Dip, and everything just lacked flavor. Even the au jus really had no kind of salt or much flavor to it. I really hoped after seeing how everyone else rated this place that I had found that little hole in the wall spot putting out killer food that we all long for, sadly this wasn't it.

Those are pretty good odds. They have just recently started a soft launch of their fall/winter menu, which means they are experimenting with a few new dishes while bringing back some old favorites. One of those returning favorites is the crispy cauliflower. Last time around, it was fantastic. This time, while still tasty, it had apparently filed a formal complaint against the word "crispy" because there was very little evidence to support the claim. Even the bartender agreed with me that it was somewhat misrepresented. Tip: Get the sauce on the side. It will help preserve what level of crisp that is intended for this dish. Now, let us move on to the star of the evening. The new chicken parmigiana! Holy mother of God. Butter my butt and call me a biscuit. This may genuinely be one of the most beautiful, perfectly textured, and downright delicious chicken parmigianas I have ever had. The chicken was crisped to absolute perfection, and the way they layered the marinara on top was brilliant. Rather than drowning the chicken in a traditional, liquidy sauce, they used more of a bruschetta-style topping, which gave it texture while somehow allowing the breading to remain gloriously crispy. Hands down, one of the best chicken parmigianas I have ever had. Now we just need to pray to whatever culinary deity is responsible for consistency that they can replicate this thing every time, because this one was ridiculously good. One final recommendation: split the dish.Unless you are the kind of person who considers a family-size portion a light snack, there is plenty of food here for two.

I didn't love it because it was kind of bright and not really a great date night dining area, compared to the rest of the restaurant. It made me wish I had just ordered a salad because that dressing was so delicious. I ordered the salmon which comes with butternut squash and Brussels. The salmon was fine but I did not like the brussel sprouts or the butternut squash and I did not like the glaze on any other food. I picked up my salmon and left the rest. Hubby was nice enough to offer me half of his salad because he saw how unhappy I was with my mral. That said, I'm sure that there are other people that would absolutely love that meal and that was just a personal taste of mine. Overall, this was a nice enough place, especially since Mesa seems to have bit a shortage update night type of restaurants. Service was really quick as we were sitting at the bar so they were pretty attentive. The dishes came out pretty quickly after we ordered. It was a little loud in the restaurant so it was kind of hard to hear each other but that's ok because they were pretty full so that's to be expected.

My sister and I have gone here a few times for a taco salad. What we have noticed is that the staff seems to hate their jobs. This last time we were there we placed an order to go. After we paid and got in our car we realized there was an extra item in our bag. So we went back in and the lady stood there and argued with us that we ordered this extra meal. When we very calmly tried to explain that we didn't she threw her hands in the air and stormed off yelling she would have to talk to her manager after she throws the container on the back counter. My sister and I stood there in complete shock. A few minutes later she comes up to the register throwing things yelling that she doesn't know how to do a refund and if "managers name" wants to refund he can do it himself. At this point my sister and I are completely disgusted and embarrassed. The restaurant wasn't full but a small line had formed. My sister and I apologized to the other patrons. Their response was she must hate her job. Finally, the lady came back after storming off again and threw the money down on the table yelling "this is how he wants to pay you" I am sorry we have all have bad days but this is not exceptionable. I run a medical office and help supervise 2 others. First of all if my employee needed help (which clearly she did) I stop what I'm doing to help. That as a manager is my job. Second of all if any of my employees showed this much disrespect to my patients serious actions would happen. In this day and age customer service is huge. Red Mountain Cafe is a small locally owned cafe with down home good cooking. They are in the process of updating the inside making it feel more open and airy. Their food is reasonably priced and the portions are generous. Their pies, brownies, bread pudding, are all made on site three times a week and are absolutely the best. Whole pies can be ordered ahead of time, which I highly recommend. They offer specials every day of the week, most notably their all you can eat fried and/or baked cod on Wednesdays and Fridays. The owners are from the upper peninsula of Michigan, thereby they offer a local upper Michigan favorite, pasties (pronounced paesti), a scrumptious pie dough confection of beef, potatoes, carrots, onion, and turnip. They offer a full menu ranging from a breakfast of simple bacon and eggs for breakfast to a shrimp & steak dinner. Highly recommended is their chicken fried steak, fried chicken, fish special, and chili. While these are some of my favorites, items such as their beef liver & onions, oriental chicken salad, and taco salads are just some of the favorites of regular customers. This restaurant is a very casual dining experience with friendly owners and wait staff. You can't go wrong trying it at least once. I bet you will keep going back. read more

I am a "regular" at Red Mountain Cafe. I have known the management team for several years, first at another location, and in this their third year of ownership, their changes and improvements in food, decor, service, and customer accommodation, are nothing short of spectacular. They have LISTENED to their customer base, and I see many customers who once frequented other restaurants, more and more gathering at Red Mountain with the Griffin family. Their menus are special, ranging from great Mexican and Southwest dishes to the traditional breakfast, lunch, and Friday dinner items that we've all known, but of a high quality not found in many small, family restaurants in which a customer can feel at home. They create seasonal decorations, and are particularly sensitive to needs of the handicapped, and they treat veterans such as myself with a special affection that we notice and which makes us smile. Today, I had just one of my favorite dishes, the "Dandy Salad" which contains everything that anyone might want on a bed of mixed/assorted lettuce: egg, carrots, crispy fried chicken, tomato, onion, cucumber, bacon bits, and a dressing of your choice, as well as garlic toast. We go here for breakfast. We order a short stack of pancakes (which is two pancakes) and we share it. It fills us up and it tastes good. Now, for the sake of full disclosure, neither my wife nor I are big eaters. But we don't eat tiny portions either. Our bill is always almost comically low. To be fair, is it an 'older person's place'? Yeah I'd think that was fair to say. MY wife and I aint blue-hairs yet but we like this place and not just because there are never screaming kids there and we can eat in peace like adults. But enough time has passed, and I figured it was only fair to give the place another chance. When we arrived, there was about a 10-minute wait, which I actually consider a good sign. I would much rather see a restaurant with a little line than one that looks like it is waiting for its employees to arrive. My girlfriend ordered the Meat Lovers Omelette, which she was able to customize to her liking. She reported that it was really good, so apparently the omelette and her are on better terms than I was with this place years ago. I went with the Mexican Skillet. I like my food to have some texture and, preferably, a little crunch, so our waitress, Sandy, recommended having the home fries deep-fried. Naturally, I accepted this challenge. The result was...interesting. The potatoes were definitely crispy, but somewhere along the way my brain stopped registering them as breakfast potatoes and started interpreting them as potato chips that had somehow wandered into my skillet. It messed with my breakfast senses a little. Sandy even admitted the potatoes are not always consistent, which I appreciated. At least we were all being honest about the potato situation. The chorizo was good, although it leaned more toward an Americanized version than the deeply seasoned, distinctly Mexican chorizo I was expecting. Still enjoyable, just a different flavor profile than anticipated. Overall, though, the meal was good, and there are several other things on the menu that caught my attention. That is usually the best indicator that we will be back: when I leave already knowing what I want to order next time. And now, Sandy deserves her own paragraph. She was wonderful. Sweet, personable, clearly hardworking, and attentive without hovering over us like she was conducting a federally funded breakfast surveillance operation. She checked on us an appropriate number of times, was helpful with recommendations, and genuinely seemed to care about our experience. So, after giving this place a second chance, I would say the verdict is: The past has officially been forgiven. The food was good, the service was even better, and there is enough on the menu to warrant another visit. Sometimes restaurants deserve a second chance and apparently, so do breakfast potatoes.

Birdies is very easy to find, as it is right inside the gate of Fountain of the Sun. We told the security officer that we were checking out the restaurant and were issued a placard to leave on the dash of our car. It only allows admittance for that reason, so there is no opportunity to check out the community. The place was very quiet, but the longer we stayed, the more people came in. No masks are required, or worn by staff. More of a sense of "normal" which I personally appreciate. We both ordered a BLT with fries and a Mimosa, and also asked for some water. The Mimosas were brought out pretty much immediately, which was really nice. A few minutes later our lunch was served. Unfortunately, we never got the water that we asked for, but that is neither here nor there. Lunch was delicious, the staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is very pleasant. We will be back to give breakfast another try.
