What can I even say about one of my favorite restaurants of all time--Charleston's? I absolutely adore this place for so many reasons. The food is consistently phenomenal, the service is top-notch, and the desserts are some of my favorites anywhere. Charleston's also holds a lot of sentimental value for me. My family has been coming here for years, and it's become our birthday tradition. There's something special about having a restaurant that's been part of so many family celebrations over the years. They do simple, classic meals exceptionally well. I've tried virtually the entire menu, and honestly, I've never had anything I didn't love. Some of my must-orders are the chicken tenders, spinach artichoke dip, and their croissants. And PLEASE save room for dessert--or do what I do and take it home if you're too full! The apple cobbler, key lime pie, and bread pudding are all must-tries. And finally, the Pink Diamond is my go-to cocktail. Now THAT is a true secret delicacy that I refuse to gatekeep. Charleston's has a reputation for quality, which makes this experience all the more disappointing. My elderly mother and I came in expecting a nice dinner and left wondering how nearly every part of the evening could have gone wrong. The service was inattentive from start to finish. Our drinks were slow to arrive, our server disappeared for long stretches, and no one seemed engaged enough to notice obvious problems with our meal. The food was genuinely awful. The Happy Hour chicken tenders still had large, tough tendons attached, leaving a pile of inedible pieces on my plate. The shrimp appetizer was so overcooked and chewy that we sent it back. Even after it was removed from the bill, we still spent about $60 on a meal that wasn't worth the money. When I tried to get the manager's attention during dinner, she repeatedly walked past without acknowledging us. Rather than create a scene, I waited until we were leaving to speak with her privately. Her response amounted to an apology and a promise to "talk to the staff," but the conversation felt dismissive rather than sincere. I walked away with no confidence that she cared about what had happened. To make matters worse, I observed other tables sending food back during our visit. I can't speak to their experiences, but combined with ours, it left me questioning whether there are broader quality-control issues at this location. I have a background in hospitality and management, so I understand that restaurants have off nights. What separates a good restaurant from a bad one is how they respond when things go wrong. Unfortunately, this restaurant failed on both counts. I gave Charleston's the opportunity to address our concerns before writing this review. They didn't. We're from Orange County, CA and we love the Wood Ranch and Houston's. Houston's is known for their French Dip. We learned that Charleston's is also known for their French Dip. We decided to give them a try on our drive from the PHX to our home in Queen Creek. We like the vibe inside and that they have so many booths. They have a nice menu with plenty of variety. Cody was our server and he was fun. He struggled a bit with a couple of our questions, but explained he was new; he checked and got back to us asap. He has a nice energy and enthusiasm. We ordered the French dip with fries and the Branzino fish with rice and green beans. The Branzino was a nice and healthy choice, but I thought it was a little pricey at $43. The French dip was delicious - about as good as Houston's. Winner! We took home a piece of carrot cake home which was good, but the frosting was lighter than we expected, maybe a whipped cream/cream cheese frosting. We'd like to try the bread pudding on our next visit. It was a very nice experience and we will definitely be back anytime we are in the area. read more

We have been coming here for years. My son picked here for his 37 birthday. So many reasons to come here. Favorite appetizer anywhere, the SHRIMP CARGOT in herb garlic butter, havarti cheese, hot and melted! Sooooooo good! Me and birthday boy had Chicken and ribs used to be on menu, not anymore, but if you ask for it, they will make it. So good as well. My steak eater son had the HAND CUT FILET hardwood grilled, served with baked potato and house salad, can't go wrong. Wife had rack of ribs, fall off the bone delicious! Staff here is AMAZING! Iced tea never empty! Trade mark of Charlestons. We were so full but had to get our favorite dessert to go, Key lime pie, "YUMM" and carrot cake, one of the best we have ever had. Charles Charleston has pretty good food. I had the shrimp cargo and it was excellent as usual! You can feel your arteries hardening while you're eating it because it's tons of butter and cheese and garlic prepared as though they were escargot! It's delicious. I decided to try the chicken piccata this time instead of the catfish. The chicken was perfectly cooked. However, I french fries were not hot and my angel hair pasta was room temperature and did not have a lot of sauce on it. I've had better chicken piccata, but it was still delightful. I asked the bartender to bring me some hot fries and a hot serving serving of angel hair pasta. Once that came, the meal was quite tasty. The service is good and all in all it's a solid place to get a good meal. I'm not hating on Charleston. read more

We went here for date night. The service was fast & friendly. The food was good. The don't have it listed on the menu but you can order some of their fresh out of the oven croissants drizzled with honey. They are so mouth watering. I asked for a double of their lemon drop martini and was accommodated nicely! It was so good that I got a second double! Sadly, I forgot to take pictures. We were here on a Wednesday for an early dinner. Charleston's had been on my radar for quite a while. When I suggested that we all go to dinner here, it was a unanimous "yes". The dining area consists of booths. Some are large enough to accommodate a large party, while others are two-tops. After looking over the menu, we all knew what we wanted. I decided to try the "catfish platter," which comes with fried catfish, fries, and coleslaw. The fish was perfectly fried, and the coleslaw was mildly flavored with the right amount of dressing. My husband ordered the filet which came with a salad and baked potato. The salad came with a croissant. A signature touch. Our son-in-law had the burger platter. One grandson got shrimp scampi. Another one got an original chicken tender platter, which came with coleslaw, fries, ketchup, and dipping sauces. One got a chicken parm platter. Everybody enjoyed their food. Our grandsons and their Dad thought Charleston's was worth 5 stars, as it was their favorite restaurant during our visit. SENTRY - WATCHING RESTAURANTS It was time for a re-review of Charleston's. Companion and I arrived at 5 and were seated immediately. We were going to try to eat the same menu as last time or as close to it as possible. We started off with the Dynamite Shrimp. As with the last time it was excellent. Also was the warm spinach and artichoke dip. It too was excellent though I am not understanding why they include sour cream and salsa with it as neither worked well with the flavor of the dip. We ordered non-alcoholic cocktails. Companion ordered a strawberry margarita which was quite good. I ordered the blackberry punch, which was a big mistake. The drink was cloyingly sweet and the flavor was overwhelming. After a few sips I could not drink anymore of it and had to send it back. As a non-alcoholic cocktail it was a disaster. Companion asked if they could make a cranberry margarita and the wish was fulfilled nicely. I finished companion's strawberry margarita which was decent. For main courses, companion had the baby backs which were ordered the last time. A tad overcooked but not bad. It was accompanied with excellent french fries and beans which were identical in taste to ranch beans that come in a can. The beans remained untouched after a taste of them. The fillet was not on the menu this year and instead was flat iron steak with peppercorn sauce. No baked potato anymore and no salad offered. While the steak was reasonably cooked, the smear of sauce over it had exactly by count 4 peppercorns in it. The accompaniment was garlic mashed potatoes, which were dense and without any charm at all. We had asked our waiter Matthew to make sure to include 2 batches of croissants in a bag to take home. Not only was no bread service offered to us, but the ones to take home were completely forgotten by our waiter. The burgundy mushrooms that we had last time are no longer a side dish but are an extra charge now, though the flavor is still top shelf. Desserts were the same as last time, and the quality and flavors did not change from the last time. Service was nice, but slow with the meal taking more than an hour and a half. Removing 1 star and almost removing 2 stars. This restaurant will be evaluated again in the future. 4 stars read more

Charlestons is one of my all time favorites. Big menu to choose from, so everyone can find something delicious to eat. They have the best food and it tastes fresh. The best Caesar salad and chicken piccata that I have ever had. Just leave room for a piece of their German chocolate cake, it too, is to die for. I highly recommend this place. read more

My wife and I come here periodically for the "Famous" French Dip sandwich. These days, we can split it and be more than happy. I'll usually get a bowl of soup or chili to augment my half, but it's a nice weekend lunch. I also like their salads (like Walt's Champagne Chicken) and other main dishes for dinner time -- even the meatloaf is good. The food and service are consistently good and I can't recall a time that we weren't welcomed as soon as we entered the restaurant. I think a lot of people come to celebrate things since we're usually asked at least once each visit if we are. I guess it is on the pricier side, but splitting for lunch is a good compromise for us. Because of our dietary preferences, we "build" our meal from sides and starters, and Charleston's makes that experience genuinely enjoyable rather than limiting. We typically order glazed carrots, mashed potatoes, a basket of their warm croissants, salads with the garlic dressing (which deserves its own shout-out--OMG, it is AMAZING), and a side of okra. Every item is consistently well-prepared, flavorful, and comforting. What really stands out is how satisfying and intentional this kind of meal feels. Nothing comes across as an afterthought. The sides are rich, well-seasoned, and clearly made with the same care as the main entrées. It's easy to put together a complete, indulgent meal that leaves us full and happy. And if we're feeling up to it, we absolutely add the bread pudding, which is downright delicious and the perfect way to end the meal. We were big fans of Charleston's long before we became vegetarian, and that hasn't changed one bit. The food quality, consistency, and welcoming atmosphere keep us coming back. Always loved Charlestons but went today a Tuesday something has happened to the staff, greeter never said hello just said two, we said yes, he showed us to a booth but was too small to get into instead of being helpful he said they are all like that, well we saw one that was a bit better and sat down. Then the waitress came and in a loud voice never said hi welcome just went into her menu items so fast couldn't take it in, my husband said he was sorry and wouldn't be able to retain all that, so she said what do you want to drink, we ordered drinks then I mentioned fish and she said yes they have it, then said I will wait on another table while you make your minds up. she didn't look like a waitress for this establishment more like a fast food diner with a could care less attitude, and I have had better courteous waitresses in roadside diners on long trips, we were so taken aback from the attitude of the staff members we got up and left. never again. oh and there was only about 8 people in there. read more

We've been to this location pretty frequently over the years but we had not been here for a couple of years until tonight. We recommended this restaurant two friends of ours that have never tried Charleston's before. I was pretty excited to introduce some people that have lived in the valley for a while to the restaurant. I was slightly embarrassed by what happened during the course of the meal. Have to say I really wanted to give the restaurant a higher score than a three but when push comes to shove you have to penalize a restaurant when they completely forget about bringing your food out. I would say after we ordered it took a good 35 minutes for the kitchen to send our meals out. At first I thought it was just because it was a little bit busy. We didn't have to wait to get a table when we got there but the restaurant was almost at capacity. But we did notice all the other tables around us were getting their food pretty much in the expected amount of time. Ours was just late. The waiter didn't really have a good answer for why the food didn't come out in the timely fashion either. The waiter did a great job. He was knowledgeable about the menu. The food was actually properly cooked and delicious. I do remember the shrimp cargo having more garlic though. Hate to say it. There's way too many places in this town that we can go eat and not have to wait 35 minutes for our food to come out from the kitchen. Not sure I will be going back to Charleston's in the future. read more

When I said something, I was told by my waitress that the manager said it's done that way. ok, but I didn't order it that way and waitress didn't realize that's how it done. Hubby & I had dinner here last night. We arrived early around 4:30. We were greeted & seated right away. The restaurant was clean & lights were turned down. The booths provided privacy. We ordered our usual, waters, beer & sangria. The drinks came in. timely manner. Our server was attentive. We ordered the shrimp escargot. It was good, but for $16 on the happy hour menu I wouldn't order it again. Hubby ordered the crispy chicken cob salad. I ordered the French dip with fries. We also got a piece of German chocolate cake to go. Hubby's salad was huge. The chicken was excellent! Hubby shared some of his salad & I shared my sandwich. I have never got such tender & non greasy breaded chicken! I wish they had a breaded chicken sandwich. When we come back I will definitely order the crispy chicken salad. It comes with a croissant. I had a bite of it. The croissant was delicious. It was super light & fluffy! Our daughter enjoyed the rest of it & my leftover fries we brought home. The French dip was delicious. The bread is excellent! The bread it french bread, but not like any other French bread we have ever had. It has tons of tender meat on it. I added cheese to the sandwich. My son got the either half of my sandwich I brought home. My hubby, son & I all commented how the bread was so good. We will be back, but not often due to the prices.
