Everything tasted great: the family ranked the garlic umami fries as #1, with the guava fried chicken as a super close #2, followed by the garlic shrimp, pork belly loco moco, pork belly bao, and beef mandoo ranked last, but not least. Small local favorite we shared a 3 entree plate lunch for $24. Surprisingly the fried veggie was our favorite on the plate. The fried chicken under guava BBQ sauce was overcooked. The sauce was tasty. We didn't expect the bitterness of the Lau Lau which may just be our taste but the Taro leaves imparted a bitterness into the meat which we didn't care for. Been hearing the buzz about Beastside Kitchen so have been wanting to check it out. Rather recently moved to the Eastside in Niu Valley, it's an easy access for me. In between errands ran into pickup a sampler to takeout. No combos available in the evening. Did go with the employee recommended garlic shrimp and a side order of crispy spicy kim chee tofu. It's no joke, the food is ono! Unfortunately, the portions did not justify the prices for takeout. Did enjoy the live music going on. Confirmed there is live music scheduled every night. Check their website out for schedule. Wow, the lineup is great. This night they had Sista Robi Kahakalau performing! The atmosphere inside the restaurant was upscale casual, come as you are. Most people were aloha attire dressed. Comfortable. Fun. Would I return? Probably not for takeout unless for pre-ordered bentos. Definitely for the entertainment and delicious food to dine in! Stopped by here after Toys for Tots parade. We were looking for a place where we could have some lunch and grab a couple drinks. We showed up around 12:30pm and the place was still pretty busy. The staff was super accommodating and were able to seat our group, around 12-15 people. We were appreciative of them doing so, due to us not having reservations. We were seated, and brought some water. We had a few questions on the menu, which the wait staff answered all of our questions. Food came out in a pretty reasonable time, which we were okay with. It gave us time to catch up with our friends. Because we had a large group, we were able to try a little of everything. One of our friends got the soba, which she enjoyed (almost finished before the rest of our food came out LoL). We also did a loco moco, the pork belly bao, fries, etc.... And one of our friends got their burger (this took awhile to come out from the kitchen). Overall experience was nice, with good food and friendly staff. Ok, let's keep it real. After the first time, it's been downhill ever since. Everything is just ultra salty and nauseatingly strong. Normally, I don't really update unless it's a lot better or, in this case, a lot worse. Umami Fries. First time was so good. Second time, a tad salty, but not that bad. But the most recent time, wow.... Just a salt bomb. Overly umami? MSG'ed to the max? I thought it wasn't mixed well, so I mixed it around, and it did not help at all. Too much salt and sauces. Probably could use a lot less. The skinny fries doesn't need THAT much. Hate getting rid of food, but this was an exception. Guava BBQ Fried Chicken falls into the same category as the fries. While the pieces are huge, it was just as salty and strong tasting. Being called "Guava BBQ", I could not taste any fruity taste or any BBQ either. It was more similar to Korean Fried Chicken, but with a lot more soy sauce and less sweet element. There's need to be a better balance of flavors instead of just salty. Perhaps more sweet and citrus to cut into the saltiness and heaviness of being a big piece of fried chicken. The Shoyu Ahi was a disaster. The ahi wasn't the freshest, and the previously frozen variety. The thing that bothered me was the THICK, THICK slices of onion that made up most of this dish. Should be renamed Shoyu Thick Onion Slices with Ahi. I'm not sure why thick slices are better than thin slices. It just overpowered everything, and the ahi was an afterthought. I normally like foods that have stronger flavors and taste, but this was just too, too much. I felt queasy, and definitely dehydrated afterwards. It's disappointing the food has become like this as the servers and staff are all super friendly and awesome, and the atmosphere is relaxing. No point dining in a pleasant place with unpleasant food. read more

Came in on a Saturday around 4p, to try to beat the dinner/live entertainment rush. Lots of booths and large tables available inside for larger parties. The staff were very nice, and talked stories with us throughout the meal service, even amongst a fussy crying baby in our party. As for the food, the meats were a little too salty for my palette. The recommended dishes are their famous guava bbq fried chicken ($10), the garlic umami fries ($9), and the oyster shooters (3 for $12). First of all, their chicken is consistently good. It is crispy fried, tender on the inside, and tossed in their shoyu-based bbq sauce. The fries are seasoned shoestring cuts drizzled with garlic butter, aioli, unagi sauce, and furikake. So good! Great spot for large parties! Nice to see some better local dining options on the east side. We called ahead for a reservations. They have high chairs for keiki too. Comfortable chairs. We ordered lots of different dishes such as Poke Stacks, Umami Fries, Yakisoba Pork Belly Noodles, Korean Platter, Chicken Tenders for the kids. My favorite was the Guava Fried Chicken and Crab Cakes. The first time the food was amazing, the second time it was very salty. We had to order extra sides of rice to help balance the extra salt. Drinking lots of water helped too. Hopefully next time it'll be better! There was live music both times with Shaun Gomban and then IMUA which I loved. There are two large restrooms within the restaurant. Well lit inside the entire place. We were there for lunch. Large screen televisions located all throughout restaurant. Food reminds me of Side Street Inn cuisine. We tried the Guava BBQ Fried Chicken Plate ($17.00) with pickled onions. This dish was recommended by our server. I was able to order from the children's menu as I wasn't too hungry. I ordered the chicken tenders, shoestring fries and BBQ sauce. ($9.50). It was supposed to come with a drink, but I was charged separately for a soda ($4.50). Ice tea ($4.50). Refills provided upon request. The fries were crispy and seasoned. Hubs and I went fishing, ma babysitting, so figured pick up lunch for everyone. Didn't realize, prices kinda steep...we got 3 plates, a pupu and keiki fried noodles for over $100. Visited on a Wednesday morning at opening time and I was greeted and seated immediately. I ordered the two choice combo with guava bbq fried chicken and garlic umami shrimp and chicken tenders for my son (of course I had some too). The food came out fresh and hot and the service here is great they check on you often they smile they seem happy and are nice and genuine. The chicken was juicy and crunchy and the garlic shrimp was so good my favorite it was so crispy and it had its shell on and was easy to chewy and eat. Went in on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30pm. It wasn't too busy and got seated right away. We ordered: Guava fried chicken which was 10/10 and would order again. Seasoned perfect and cooked perfectly as well. Got it with rice and Mac salad all were delicious. The fried shrimp with pickled onion as our side. I wasn't a huge fan of this as they leave the shells still on. The flavor was great but I gave it to my husband as I couldn't eat the shells. He enjoyed it! I also got the loco moco. It's is huge and they give so much food. The kids ate it up. At the end we tried the lilikoi mochi. It was very pricey at $15 for 6 pieces. I did not absolutely love it but I'm glad I tried it. Came on a Sunday night and it was PACKED. Our hostess and server notified us before seating that the food is backed up and might be a while which I appreciated - decided to stay and wait it out because the menu looked super good. We ordered: Oyster shooters - wayyy too much soy or shoyu sauce - it overpowered the flavor of the oyster. And they added too much into the shot glass to truly actually shoot it. Guava fried chicken - it tasted as though it had been sitting in the fryer too long and lost its crunchiness. The guava flavoring was not too overwhelming. Garlic Kim Chee Tofu - loved the chili oil and crunch of this. I'm so used to having warm tofu so this was a nice refreshing twist. Overall service was good - they had two larger parties that took up most of the restaurant on a Wednesday evening. The worst part about our experience here was how loud the music was. The music was so loud, I truly couldn't enjoy most of the meal we ordered because I started to get vertigo and ended up quickly finishing our meal to get out.
