Went back to beastside kitchen and tried to Umami Fries. This was probably my favorite dish I've tried so far. But it's just too expensive for my budget. I'll give an extra star because service was consistently good and the Umami fries is a unique side dish where the fries are crispy brown with delicious sauce on it. We have been to Beastside Kitchen several times. It's a welcome addition to East Honolulu's restaurant selection. They always seem to be busy when we go and the waiters have always been friendly. It's in the Niu Valley Shopping Center so parking is easy. For some the reason the food is a little too flavorful for my taste. I've had several dishes, the garlic shrimp, guava chicken, umami fries, and spicy tofu (the spicy tofu is my favorite dish so far.) I know that we will return since my husband absolutely loves the seared ahi, so I'll try some other dishes on the menu. read more

Showed up to order take out and I was told 15min. 2 groups of ppl sit to dine in and after 20min I notice they're getting their food to the tables and yet I haven't gotten my order. I heard about this location from our tour guide on the Blue Line of the Waikīkī Trolley yesterday. He pointed it out to us from the trolley. The location is in a shopping plaza. The inside had unique decor but is welcoming upon entering. The hostess was was quite informative on the types of food they have, their bestsellers, and the dishes that put them on the map. We ordered the Guava BBQ Fried Chicken, Garlic Umami Shrimp, and Pork Belly Umami Fried Rice. The Guava BBQ Fried Chicken was tasty but fried too hard for us. I didn't taste the guava at all so that was a little disappointing. The Garlic Umami Shrimp most of the flavor and seasoning was on the shell of the shrimp and not the shrimp itself. The flavor was amazing. I would just love more of it on the shrimp as I bit into and ate the shrimp. The garlic flavor was consistent throughout. Pork Belly Umami Fried Rice was simply amazing it had so much flavor. Tender pork belly fried with premium rice, house Umami sauces, white and green onions topped with furikake and Umami aioli. Casual restaurant with lots of tables and a menu with items that can be single orders, and mixed plate option with some of their more popular foods, or family-style plates. Staff is attentive and friendly. Of all the food we had (read more below), the one I'd order - but in a different way - is the pork belly. The pork belly was flavorful and tender especially with the pickled onions, but the bao dish had too much sauce. Cons: Food was disappointing, especially with such good reviews. We ordered the furikake fries, pork belly bao, and the mixed plate with the guava chicken and the garlic shrimp. The latter three are the most popular items, according to our server. Items with sauces were overly sauced, so therefore, quite salty. The guava chicken was over cooked. The shrimp had to be peeled, so I peeled away all the coating on the outside. Rice was dry. After a scenic trip to Sandy Beach, we stopped by Beastside Kitchen for lunch. It's a great casual spot offering Hawaiian and Pacific Rim dishes, along with a nice selection of cocktails. The restaurant is located in a small strip mall next to Kings Food Market, with plenty of parking available. The interior features a laid-back, casual decor with booths lining the walls and tables in the center. There's also a small stage at the back of the restaurant for live music, adding to the relaxed atmosphere. Although it was a bit busy for just one waitress, she was fantastic--friendly, attentive, and quick to recommend some local favorites, which we eagerly ordered: Guava Fried Chicken - Moist and flavorful with a subtle hint of guava. A few pieces were unfortunately dry, possibly overcooked or reheated. Garlic Prawns - Cooked perfectly--crispy, buttery, and rich with garlic. Pork Bao - Add a slice of pickled onion and the first bite is outstanding: savory, juicy, and tender. Just don't let it sit too long, or the bun may get soggy from the pork juices. A hidden gem on the east side of the island! I seen this place so many times on social media and decided to finally come out and try it! I'll make this short and sweet! Service: Very friendly staff! When we came it was early they had just opened, so it wasn't crowded at all, we got seated right away and served right away as well. Food: The pastele nachos were delicious, the Ahi was super ono, and the pork belly was surprisingly really good as well. We walked in on a Sunday night around 8pm since the restaurant next door had a wait. I've gone before for parties and gatherings where it's been pupu style so we decided to stop here for dinner instead. We were greeted and seated right away. The drinks were good and you can't go wrong with their fries. We also ordered a kimchee fried rice with egg and the guava fried chicken. The fries and rice came first and chicken a little later. I'm not sure if it was because it was late or an off day but the rice was slightly undercooked and hard with every bite, there was also very few pieces of kimchee in it. The chicken was good but for it coming out last, some pieces were cold while others were hot so I'm not sure if some were sitting out. The portions are large and prices are reasonable. I just wished the quality of the food that came out was a little better. Overall I would go back to maybe try their breakfast or another gathering. read more

Took the whole family to Beastside Kitchen for brunch for the first time. The reviews were great and so we were very excited to see if the food lived up to what we read. Good news, it did! The storefront is located in a small shopping strip and easy to find. Lots of parking outside and we were even able to drive up and drop off our elderly family member right at the front door. The decor inside is simple and local family style which brings about a nice relaxed environment. Sometimes these kinds of casual places can have bland food but the food was incredible. Our dishes took a while to come out. Apparently they had a large catering order going out right before our order. But the staff were really nice and were attentive to us the whole time and kept us smiling. They really took good care of us from our keiki to our kupuna. The kids loved watching football on the big screens set up in each corner. Each and every one of us loved our food! I got a two choice mixed plate with the Garlic Umami Shrimp and the Crunchy Garlic Kim Chee Tofu and oh man, it was so ono! The sauce mixed into the rice and I couldn't stop eating even after finishing the main dish. The garlic shrimp had a nice crispy outer coating with tons of flavor and cooked to perfection. The tofu is uncooked but goes perfectly with the garlic kim chee topping which is loaded on top. I loved the crunch that was mixed in. Hubby got the loco loco and he said it was tender and flavorful. If anything he'd want a bit more umami to the gravy but he ate it all up and said he'd order it again. Grandma got the pork belly and it was tender and had large portions of meat. We were all eyeing it. It was a giant portion and she finished it off! She chose the picked onions and mac salad to go with and both were really excellent. The onions were crisp and added a good punch of zing to the dish. Our kids loved the tempura fish (toppings on the side) and the mini dawgs. Every single one of us at the table raved over their fries. We treated the kids to the brownies as well and they were hot with the perfect amount of ice cream on top. Recently went to Beastside Kitchen on a Wednesday evening around 6:00 pm and ordered "family style" so there were a number of choices to choose from. The Kalbi was tender and very tasty; the fried shrimp were big, juicy and very delicious; the kim chee fried rice was very tasty and to top it off the fried chicken was tasty and flavorful beyond words. The portions are large so bring your appetite, the service was very friendly and helpful and the ambiance and live music was also excellent. I recommend Beastside Kitchen and plan to go back very soon. read more

Went for breakfast and they now open at 7am! Had the adobo fried rice and companion ordered the Kalbi and eggs. Kalbi was sliced and soft with great taste. Adobo was tasty/ soft and nice pieces in rice. Great meal so went back for dinner next day. Lettuce wrap had shrimp and great flavor. Side salad was nice greens with nice papaya vinaigrette. Plenty parking in the private parking lot. We were seated in a minute or so. We ordered a Pastele Nachos for an appetizer. Guava BBQ Fried Chicken and a Pork Belly Loco Moco for our lunch. The appetizer came out first. Then shortly after our lunch plates. The food looked good and tasted good. FYI: the macaroni salad had a slight pickle juice taste to it. The service is friendly and fast. The ambiance is casual. It was too much food to eat for lunch. We both took home the leftovers to eat for dinner later. Amazing!!!!! Came here for our Christmas luncheon on Christmas Eve. They were available and able to seat 11 of us. Food was ONO, service seemed glitchy. My wife and I needed to run some errands in Hawaii Kai and stopped in for lunch here based on some Yelp searching. My wife ordered a Liliko'i Iced Tea to start, which was extremely refreshing. I couldn't decide on what to have, so I asked our server. She recommended the fried chicken and the garlic shrimp, which are their signature dishes (as well as the BBQ Pork Belly). Both were incredibly flavorful and cooked perfectly. The accompanying mac salad was killer. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and will likely stick to this order when I undoubtedly return. My wife ordered the furikake ahi, which she loved. She commented that the aioli and the toppings complimented the fish perfectly. She was a big fan. We, a party of five, were there for lunch last Friday. The waiter was top notch. He was there to refill water, let us order on our time (neither rushing us or letting us sit for long stretches of time), made recommendations (so we ordered family style) and even offered to slightly alter menu (like letting us know if we ordered the bar which normally came in fours he would make it five) and checking on us after the food was served. Granted it was a slow day but he was the only one on duty during lunch. The food was ample and tasty. We had the guava chicken, shrimp, Asian salad and noodles. Even with five there was plenty left over for us to take home. The guava chicken was deep fried, boneless and very moist (and yes, I have had thighs that were fried and very dry). So I assume the chicken must have been marinated in the guava sauce overnight. The shrimp was crispy and well seasoned. The salad was nicely balanced-I usually don't like onions but their pickled onions added a bit of tang and spice. And the noodles seemed to have a bit of everything- including the pork that would have been in the bao. What I appreciated was that the waiter allowed us to pick our table. Even if he knew it wouldn't be crowded, he was kind enough to push two four tops so that what would normally be an eight top for the five of us. As with every weekend, our family goes in circles on Sundays, trying to decide where to have lunch. We almost ended up at one of those chain restaurants, but I hopped on Yelp and looked for someplace we had never tried before. We decided to try it since we were at Kahala Mall and Beastside Kitchen during my search. It was worth the extra 10-minute drive. It was pretty quiet when we walked in, probably after the lunch rush. Our server, Laura, was very kind and helpful with the menu. It was our first time here, so we asked for suggestions, followed her recommendations, and decided to follow the family style. We ordered the guava chicken, umami shrimp, fried rice, french fries with umami sauce and furikake, and pork bao buns. All of it was delicious, but our absolute favorite was the shrimp. We just couldn't be polite, as everyone had their eye on the last piece on the plate. Our daughter won - she grabbed it and said, "Well, if no one is going to eat it, it's mine." Laura was great about checking on us and refilling our drinks. But what impressed me was when I ordered a Prosecco, I mentioned that I preferred sweet beverages. Without asking, Laura went the extra mile and brought a little cup of lilikoi concentrate "just in case you need to make the drink sweeter." It was the perfect added touch that made my meal. To round off the meal, we decided to share the yuzu sorbet. After all the local grinds, it was the perfect way to clean our pallets with some cold and refreshing. We left with smiles on our bellies and some leftovers. We almost forgot because we were so full. Because it's in a small shopping center there's lots of free parking and better yet, you can go in with your rubber slippers, shorts and a T-shirt. Did a take out order around 1130am and was glad to see wasn't too busy. Had a few families seated inside. This was my first time here so I didn't know they had such a nice dining area. I ordered the furikake ahi on the suggestion of person who took my order and I'm glad I did! They were right, furi ahi is where it's at! So this, to me, is a beautifully done rendition of ahi katsu. Similar sauces- spicy aioli and unagi or teri sauce and a nice fry in it. The ahi was done well, not dry or over cooked which is common. The difference was the pico de gallo on top. Even if the ahi was dry had so much stuff on top I would have been fine with it. Not too much where it overpowers the ahi flavor but enhances it quite nicely! I got pickled onion on the side and THAT was on point! So many places get this classic side dish wrong so I'm beyond stoked to see it done right. Good onion flavor, tangy, little bit spicy (not too much!) and little bit sweet. Went perfectly with the ahi. I will be bringing my family back for a sit down meal very soon. I overheard one of the staff (maybe one of the owners) talking to one obnoxious customer (sitting inside 20 minutes and had to listen to him cuss and talk so loud about how he could beat someone up smh) the staff member was kind and engaging. Would I have known there was guava in the marinade? Perhaps due to a touch of sweetness I attribute to a guava. My only issue is it will be a mess since peeling is required. Parents will need to help the kids with this one...it was finger lickin good! **** Kalbi Short Ribs- marinated in a familiar Korean BBQ sauce. Served cold and topped with a generous blend of finely chopped toppings of Kim Chee, green onions, crunchy garlic sauce and a spicy chili oil that was deliciously light and bursting with unexpected flavors hitting my taste buds! **** Pork Belly Umami Fried Rice , huge mound of flavorful perfectly cooked rice with an egg prepared any way you want, resting on top. This portion was more than enough for 4 of us. I enjoyed each and every dish we had. The service was friendly, helpful, timely. Experience makes a world of difference. Our server had tried pretty much everything on the menu so could make valid suggestions. The setting is inviting, they post a monthly calendar listing the schedule of live local entertainment. The only thing I would suggest, is to have their piped in music turned down a bit.
