As we neared Eureka, I did a search for a seafood restaurant, and Bayfront was prominent in the search results, unfortunately. I grew up on calamari in Spain, so the idea of a calamari sandwich was appealing. But, my sandwich had no calamari flavor in the generous piece of calamari steak. That was partly due to the overwhelming mustard on the sandwich. It was good mustard, but I didn't want a mustard sandwich. ... and the fries were cooked to the point of being dark. Not only was that a kitchen problem, but the server should not have brought them out. I didn't bother eating the leftovers in my go box. My husband was not very happy with his lunch either. But, the view on the water is lovely, and they feature local art. 2 stars because of the local art. read more

We popped in this past weekend wanting some sushi. The sushi rolls we ordered were decent and I wasn't expecting much after seeing a sushi place that also offers Italian food. Service was fast and pleasant. It was nighttime so the view of the bay wasn't much of a thing, but we were seated by the window. The bathroom wasn't very clean and felt off because there were no light fixtures - just bare bulbs. read more

The restaurant was not too busy the day after Christmas, so seating was pretty quick. The waiters and attendants were all very nice and polite. The food portions are rather large and we did not mind at all! The sushi was not bad and the Saba was really full of flavor. Overall the atmosphere, customer service, the food portion and taste left me pleasantly surprised as I was not expecting much after having had not so good food experiences in the downtown area. We love this restaurant and can't really understand the poor reviews. It is my husband's favorite place for sushi and I really appreciate their willingness to make modifications to the rolls I order. We always get great service, have never had any problem with getting reservations or having them honored, the ambience is relaxing and comfortable with seating outdoors and inside. We have never ordered from the Italian menu, but love the sushi menu. My husband loves the Unagi Don which he can't get anywhere else. We booked a reservation in advance for 6:00 p.m. April 17th 2025. It's my partner and i's birthday and we love coming here as a special treat to ourselves. Unfortunately, last night changed our experience for the worst. We booked for teppanyaki and evidently there was another family there that was a party of 17. That family showed up a half an hour late and the restaurant still chose to serve them. Both chefs had to tend to this family which then made every party after them over an hour late. We showed up at 6:00 and did not even see a chef at our table until 7:00. When we got the bill we expected to be comped for maybe a drink or even our appetizer, that we were encouraged to order, because of the long wait. We weren't comped anything. I'd like to say that the waitresses were hustling hard there's no doubt that they were completely overwhelmed but did the best they could. My fiance's only frustration was we were only served one drink and we're not offered for anything else the entire meal. We were sitting on the outskirts of the table which made it a little bit harder to come around and ask us for anything. Other people across from us were offered multiple drinks and checked in on. There have been a few other times that we've come here and the service has been incredibly slow, not from the waitresses but just for the food to arrive. You could tell that the waitresses were frustrated with having to serve the party of 17, because they were so late. I really feel for those waitresses. I bet their tips were impacted because of that from other tables and that's just unfair. Our experience was really frustrating and it really put a damper on our birthday! read more

Awful! Second time I've gone in the last couple months and the heater has not been working. The server commented it was 60 degrees in restaurant and we were also conveniently seated by the entrance. Such a miserable dining experience. I hate eating dinner in my coat. We noted we were uncomfortable. Nobody seemed to care. Everyone messed with the thermostat but that was about it. We had dinner here on Saturday night. I was underwhelmed. This place has no identity - serving sushi, Italian food and also hibachi style. I was extremely unhappy with my salmon - it was just not prepared well and not seasoned at all, it was so bland. Maybe it's because I just had great cuisine in San Diego last weekend but this was not the best. The shrimp tempura was ok-ish but overall the experience was not that good. First time here and first time having sushi. I got the California roll and clam chowder. Sooo good! The waitress was great, it was busy Saturday too. She brought me fresh bread instead of saltine crackers. It's a nice restaurant looking over the bay. It is expensive (for my taste) but you do get a lot of food. There was 10 of us and everyone's food looked good and had a lot. They mostly have sushi (obviously) they also have New York steak, Hamburger/fries and some pasta options. After a few days of traveling up the coast, I was craving Asian food. We came across Bayfront on multiple recommendation lists, so we knew it was a spot we wanted to check out. We called the day of and they were able to give us a reservation for the same night. This restaurant is truly located in a prime real estate spot! Like right by the water, and our table was by the window, which made for a great view and experience. We initially thought it was a red flag that there were a few Italian items on the menu, but we were too quick to judge. We did stick to the Japanese items and ordered Miso Soup, Chicken Teriyaki with Vegetable Tempura and Shrimp, the Black Kitty Roll, the Spicy Scallop Hand Roll and a few Nigiri pieces (BBQ Hotate, Escolar, and Hamachi). No joke, every item was very tasty and much better than we were expecting. The Black Kitty Roll was probably my favorite item, especially since I love Unagi, but the Nigiri were also solid and we could tell the Tempura was prepared super fresh. The only thing I didn't like was the side salad that came with the Teriyaki, and that was purely because there was too much dressing in it. People really went in regarding service, price, and food. I've never seen so many people loving or hating one place. I'm not from here so read my review from a tourists lens. Service - The host was great. She was doing the best she could with what she had. Super nice and friendly and very accommodating. As the line got longer she offered to go for people who didn't want to wait in line. Our waitress was maybe having a bad day? She was the only one managing one side so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Food - why would you combine Italian and Japanese? I don't understand it. And the crazy part is I wanted pasta. The spinach chicken was actually not bad and the bread was incredibly soft. The pumpkin ravioli was laughable. I knew from other reviews that it was a toss up so I wasn't disappointed mainly because I knew what to expect. The ravioli wasn't fully cooked and this might sound odd but my partner and I dipped the ravioli in soy sauce and it actually tasted better. That's how bland it was. Now you might wonder that was foolish of you to bother ordering Italian and you're probably right. Price - Is it worth the price? Of course not. But you're not paying for the food you're paying for the views and they'll mark whatever the heck they can because of that. Overall I definitely came to have a nice seat by the water and if that was all this place was it would get 5 stars. read more

Updated Review. We have been eating at the Bayfront Restaurant for many years. It is always an enjoyable experience. We recently had another fine and tasty experience here. The tables are well spaced to make you feel properly socially distanced from the other customers during the pandemic. The three of us enjoyed their fantastic sushi creations. We started with an order Tempura Shrimp ($14) and a large order of Hot Sake ($8) and a Seaweed Salad ($5). The Volcano roll ($15) is fantastic! The other items were delicious: Black Kitty roll ($17), Dungeness Roll ($17), R and R ($9) and a few orders of Tobiko Nigiri ($8 each). In addition to great food, the service is attentive and friendly. A visit to Eureka would not be complete for us without a meal at this restaurant. read more

My husband and I made reservations for the teppanyaki, and they didn't tell us we would be dining with 6 other people, where 3 of them were under the age of 5. One of the kids had a meltdown because of the flame, so the chef didn't do the flame (which is half the show) and then our server didn't even get us refills till the very end (was too busy singing happy birthday to a family?) wtf.. I've been here a few times and the best part of this place is the location: right on the water with big windows looking over the harbor. It's a beautiful spot for a romantic dinner or to take in the relaxing view. The restaurant has an upscale atmosphere without being stuffy. They are currently offering limited dine in service and takeout. The menu has a wide variety of moderately priced Japanese and Italian cuisine to choose from. My only suggestion is to improve the Crab Sandwich. It mainly consists of deep fried batter with very little crab. Considering there are ample crab distributors in the area, I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to source fresh crab. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. We were visiting family from out of state, and we wanted to have a nice dinner at Bayfront. We called and made a reservation for teppanyaki. We asked for a time and they told us a time later that what we had mentioned, which was fine. Gave them our credit card number. We showed up. Had us sit in the waiting area for about 15 minutes. Someone comes up and asks if we have been helped? Only for us to be told that they can't accommodate us. At this point, it's getting later and later. Most restaurants are closing. They move us to the other side of the restaurant. Not even close to the same menu. We felt rushed the whole time, vacuuming around us, cleaning up. The food was absolutely disgusting. After all said and done, we paid $350 for a terrible meal. So disappointing. 0/10, would NOT recommend. read more

Looks nice enough from the outside, especially compared to other places in the area. We went for an early dinner and we're surprised by the menu - sushi and pasta. We'd initially planned to take some for later to snack on at the hotel, but waited to order until after we'd eaten. Pretty sure we dodged a bullet. The view was the best thing to be said for this place. We are in town for my son's graduation tomorrow. Looking for a nice place to have dinner, the Bayfront Restaurant looked promising as a Japanese sushi and Teppanyaki eatery. We were walk-in customers and the host asked if we had a reservation. We said we didn't and he informed us that it would be around a 30-minute wait to be seated. He then looked away and seemingly forgot we were there. We had to ask if we could put our name on the wait list, and only then did he ask our name and a phone number with area code first. And then informed us there would only be one call to tell us a table was ready. (Since we live outside the Eureka area you would think they would attempt to keep our business) However, after almost an hour we never received a call and we left to find another restaurant to have dinner. Poor service to visiting customers is a sure way to lose business. We will not be recommending this restaurant. read more

I've been here about eight times in the past year. I have been happy about 75% of the time. And let's be clear, I only continue to come here for the sushi and the location. My go-to order used to be the sashimi sampler, but on my last visit I noticed that it Jumped in price from $30 to $42. Due to this as well as freshness concerns at my last visit, I opted for a few new things instead. The black kitty roll was amazing and the nigiri was great. PROS: The fish is USUALLY fresh. (See below) The rolls are nicely prepared and presented, and tasty. The views are terrific, but only if you get a window table. (See ambiance, below). Wednesdays have half price bottles of sake or wine!!! CONS: SERVICE: Over 8 visits, the best service I've had would be characterized as "acceptable." It's never been "good", and it's more often than not "poor." Two times I have been sat down and no one approached me for ten minutes. On all but one visit, the server did not come to check on us after food was delivered. When you finish your drink after the first bite of food and no one notices, and no one asks how the food is, or if you would like a second glass of wine... or, you have to wait over 20 minutes to get someone's attention to get a check, with empty plates and glasses sitting around, and then the check comes without the table being cleared first, it doesn't look good. Oh, and on at least three visits I was ready to order additional food or drinks, but had to wait so long and got so irritated I lost my appetite. This is also not a great business model when your customers are sitting at window seats fiddling their thumbs when there is a line of people out the door who could also be ordering food. AMBIANCE: Aside from the bay view, ambiance leaves much to be desired. The decor makes it feel like a community center classroom rather than a Japanese restaurant. Some music could help also! Especially because there are almost always loud children around. "USUALLY" FRESH?: Sadly, yes. On two occasions, the sashimi sampler I ordered came out with unwanted toppings on some of the fish. Dots of Sriracha, or thin wedges of lemon on each piece, for instance. At first I was puzzled, but I quickly learned that this was because the chef knew that particular fish was not so fresh that day. And I could tell. Definitely a turn off. Overall I will still come back because you can't beat eating sushi on the bay, but I have lost almost all expectations on service. read more

I walked in by myself and asked to be sat at a bar or a table. I was told "no" because of covid the sushi bar was closed and I was too small of a party for a table. Ok. Can I get a to-go order? There's now a line of people behind me. The hostess says her electronic station isn't working and I have to phone in my order? I left my phone on the car. I say, you can't write my order down. With attitude she says because of covid (new excuse) I can't be standing in front of her. I'm wearing a mask with a line of 10 people behind me. I ask for the manager. I say, are you telling me that your staff can't write down two items order on a piece of paper? No! I have to use my phone and app?! And finally the manager says, she'll get a me a table. Then why was I going around and around with the staff? It is a sad statement of a restaurant and a generational that staff have to be automotized to the point they dont understand how to use a pen and paper. If they can't manage this simple task, why would anyone trust them with raw fish? The hostess! What attitude! Sidenote: as I am waiting for the manager the hosting staff spilled a sushi box on the counter, shoved it back into the box with unwashed hands, stuffed it into a to go box. My first time at this restaurant and I had a great experience. The host, Skylar, sat me and explained the menu as well as ensured I had a great experience.
