The problem I had was we called in to see if they were busy and a waitlist and when we went to ask how long the wait was she hung up already. Visiting out of town and were recommended this place, wish we would have looked at the reviews prior to coming. I had the Spicy Chicken Teriyaki which was a couple pieces of chicken charbroiled flat and dry topped with cold La Choy spicy sauce, straight from the jar. My husband tried the Spaghetti which consisted of cooked meat and no spices what so ever, beyond bland, the "tomato sauce" which was watery seemed it straight from the can. Service is as bad as it's food. We waited 10 min before server greeted us and asked for our drink order. The one star is for the view. Being ushered out in a hushed tone by the hostess because she wants to leave early... Your sign says your open till 9:30 but when I asked to be seated at 8:50pm the hostess said very quietly the restaurant was closing at 9 and we'll what did I want...she didn't want to serve us and was acting up about it. We loved this place. Great food and great service. And it's a place that has both sushi/Japanese and Italian food, so it's perfect for parties that have differing tastes. We had sushi; next time I'll probably try the Italian, since I've heard it is really good. It's also really beautiful; the view was very welcome for me, as I moved out of town after a lifetime in Humboldt County, so eating right on the bay was a special treat. Unfortunately did not have a chance to enjoy a meal let alone a drink. After 10 minutes of not receiving water or having our drink order taken, the server walked by apologizing for the wait and how she'd be over in a moment. After another 5 minutes helping other tables (which is fine), but more notably socializing....was the icing on the cake, left immediately. My friend and I had just finished dining at this restaurant and were not pleased in the least. The restaurant sits overlooking Humboldt Bay, which is lovely. We were seated at a table with a beautiful view. Our waitress politely greeted us and asked if we would like something to drink so we ordered hot tea. Meanwhile, a young woman was continuously running a carpet sweeper over the entire carpeted restaurant. At first, I thought she was cleaning up a small mishap but soon realized she was carpet sweeping the whole restaurant! Finally, the annoying back-and-forth whir of the sweeper became too much to bear. They were serving dinner and people at other tables were commenting as well. I called the young lady over and politely asked if it were necessary to be doing that during our meal and she replied her manager told her to keep busy at all times. I asked to see the manager and she brushed me off, moved to another area still well within earshot, and continued with her robotic-like cleaning. Once our waitress returned my companion asked her to please bring an end to the non-stop carpet sweeping. She became defensive and stated it was a health code requirement as a rationale. She went on to say it was an industry requirement in every restaurant she has ever worked. Yes, cleaning the floor is a requirement from the health department but NOT during meal service time. I pointed out how it was raising dust and she countered that it does the opposite. Neither of these points she raised is true and I would venture quite the opposite view would be held by the health inspectors. If a mishap occurs, by all means, clean it up quickly but you do NOT vacuum the entire restaurant while your patrons are trying to enjoy their meal! Finally, the sweeping continued but on the far end of the restaurant from where we were sitting. The most insulting portion of this exchange was having her look us in the eye and lie to us! We ordered sushi, which was fine but when my friend's bento box of tempura and sushimi arrived, the tempura was so grease-laden it literally ran out when the pieces were held up from the plate. It was literally inedible! The sushimi on that plate was soggy and also inedible. He managed to eat 3-4 things before finally just giving up and pushing aside the $32 bento box. After complaining about his meal and showing how greasy it was the waitress gave his plate a 20% discount. Grossly inadequate! She should have offered to bring him something else but instead, took about $6 off of his meal. If you have made it this far, I commend you. I just had to get this off my chest after enduring such a ridiculously unfulfilling meal for just under $100! To say the least, neither of us will ever be going back there any time soon and unless you like your tempura dripping in oil, I would not order it there! Save your money on the food. Go for a glass of wine and enjoy the view then go to a restaurant where they are not vacuuming the floor under your feet or over-charging for mediocre food! read more

I love this place so much, especially their teppanyaki! I have gone so many times and had so much fun every time. Being a vegetarian I didn't have many choices except for tofu (which I'm not a huge fan of) and grilled vegetables. However, I decided to try the tofu and I'm so glad that I did because that is the best tofu I have ever had! Also, the chef that we got was amazing and kept us entertained the whole time. Someone in my group had a little spill with the fried rice so they were very nice and gave us another one for free without us asking! I'm so glad we have a place like this in this small town and I will definitely be going back time and time again. read more

I brought my family from out of town to this restaurant because I always had good food and service there. The food was fantastic. The restaurant was very nice. the issue I came across was from the Waitress that we had. we had to remind her about my wife salad that came with the meal, My Cousin's side of fried rice, and My cousin's friend Sushi roll multiple times. None of these ever came out and my wife had to talk to the Manager to get them off of our bill. Once the waitress came with our bill I went up to pay and there she was telling her Co-worker( not realizing that I was standing there) on how we got her talked to by the manager just because she forgot a salad even though it was more than a salad. When she got my change she slammed it on the counter and told me never to come back. Over all we enjoyed the food( the stuff we got ) but the waitress was very unprofessional in my opinion. We had the vegan spring rolls, my husband had the chef's choice sashimi with house salad, I had the organic tofu teriyaki - and the chef accommodated my request of half tempura and half grilled. All delicious. Then we asked about the dessert menu. My husband ordered the tiramisu, and I decided to try the butter cake - expecting a little slice of sponge or pound cake. Oh my gosh!! Its a little round sponge type cake DIPPED IN TEMPURA AND DEEP FRIED!! -with 2 small scoops of vanilla ice cream and a fresh raspberry drizzle. Holy deliciousness batman! I'll go there again just for that dessert! Wish I'd taken pictures! Waitstaff were all great, competent, and friendly. The ambience changes depending where you are seated.. Have to say used to love it here but wow they have changed. The clam chowder was gritty as if it had sand in it but the most disappointing part was the chicken teriyaki. The sauce used to be thick and covering the chicken. Now it's basically grilled chicken with water flavored as teriyaki. Sad because they used to be soo good. I gotta say this place is odd, and saying that is being optimistic. First and foremost the thing you feel when you are going here is that it seems like a more upscale restaurant. It's by the bay, the staff are in slacks and ties, a good wall of wine at the bar (no actual liquor though?), and you feel like, hey okay, this seems like a first class place. Nope. First clue is the menu. It's a textbook. And the weirdest thing is that you realize that they are going for a hybrid style restaurant, but really? It's Italian and Japanese cuisine. I'm no chef so maybe you could pull it off if you kinda mixed and matched but nope, it is one or the other. Half the menu shows new york steak, clam chowder, penne, spaghetti or fettuccine. The other half is fried rice, chicken or beef teriyaki, and chicken katsu. And that isn't even mentioning the large sushi bar or teppanyaki area they have. What is going on? Anyways whatever, I got the katsu and GF got the ravioli. Terrible. Katsu was like rubber dough and the ravioli cold. Now for service that was also bad. Our waitress was barely ever around, and acted as if the nice fine dining trappings gave her an excuse to just blow us off. Yeah that pretty much sums it up. Seeing some of the other reviews on here makes me feel like this is not an uncommon feeling. P.S. My girl made me add that, while she too wasn't too happy about the service, that the place was crowded and that the staff was obviously running around like crazy trying to do too much. Pretty dissatisfied with my service today and won't be coming back for a long time which is a shame because this was one of our favorite places to do date nights. We got the VIP for 2 and to say the least it did not feel very VIP. We sat alongside another couple who ordered the same thing as us, VIP sub scallops for salmon. The chef gave horribly inconsistent proportions to us compared to the couple next to us who ordered the exact same thing. The thing that pissed me off the most was that he gave the couple next to us 90% of the filet that should've been for the 4 of us and us only 4 small cubes each. Shrimp and lobster were over cooked, and vegetables were pretty greasy. Worst chef I've ever had for teppanyaki grill. I was disappointed the young guy wasn't our chef tonight, his food is consistently awesome and he's never given us a crappy experience like we had tonight. It's hard to believe I have to post such a review, but... I went in tonight to get sushi for myself and the lady. We placed our order and specifically asked to replace cucumber on one of the items with something else. The lady taking the order typed in that we wanted the SHRIMP replaced... The two words are not even similar. Another lady came back to confirm and after doing so, she asked us for more money... $4.00 to correct the mistake that their staff made. Any other place in the world would have said, "Apologies, we'll take care of it!" Four dollars. In short, if you come here, make sure to check your order twice before you let the waiter/waitress walk off. Cause they're not afraid to ask you for more money to cover their mistakes. read more

Open 7 days and kind staff is a real plus. Freshness of ingredients is a bit suspect as is the norm round here, nothing that will kill you, but alot of off color ageing in the case which is not stacked n packed traditionally. Was greeted upon arrival and departure. Rolls and nigiri were soso...seaweed salad was ok, tako was dated. Miso was good. So I'm kind of neither here nor there on this one. There seems to be this thing in humboldt where we dont pass on and train traditional prepping and techniques , and things are done, decisions made are always about the bottom line, and never about the complete experience of the patron. No care is given to teach sushi cutting skill, japanese culture, or prep work, and that sorry fact is almost universal here with a few standouts but none in eureka. To say the very least we lack strong food culture here as a whole, and often it shows. Bayfront has the view, the sunset, the staff, and their tappan isn't half bad, but the sushi bar leaves much to be desired. read more

We were vacationing in the area to see the redwoods. We came across this restaurant and were impressed by the reviews. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the water front views. The staff was working hard to keep up with demand, so we had to wait about minutes to be seated without a reservation. We enjoyed a beverage and some edamame while we waited for our boat of sushi. It took a long time, because there were so many people, but it was worth it. Some of the best sushi we have had, and we get it every chance we get. I think we have to remember that restaurants have gone through so much lately. Open, then closed, then outside only. We got tuna rolls that came with Hamachi, however I'm pregnant and staying away from raw food so I asked if we could sub the hamachi for cooked shrimp, which they did...and upcharged us $5.00 for it which we didn't know until we got the bill. The shrimp smelled off and hadn't even been cleaned/de-veined. The rolls had 6 small pieces for $18 each ($23 for my roll with shrimp instead of raw fish) and worst of all it was CANNED tuna. Right under the restaurant the boats in the harbor sell fish so there's really no excuse. We've also tried the Teppenyaki, and the chefs are skilled but the food is just not worth the $100 price tag. Side note, the front door had a sign that began with "Due to lack of decent staff..." Nope not the staff. It's everything to do with a Sushi restaurant on the ocean that uses canned seafood and has "Italian" items/burgers on their menu, but blames the people that are too embarrassed to work there.
