Sushi Rolls

Serving consistently fresh fish and delectable Japanese plates with something for everyone. in a welcoming atmosphere, where service is unparalleled. Always worth the wait, Tomo is a cornerstone of the community, a place to see familiar faces, and special occasions for any reason, it's no surprise Tomo has been the "go-to" for exquisitely prepared Japanese cuisine and sushi on the North Coast for more than 30 years

Food: Various dishes from the special menu. Most impressive were the unagi sushi, mango roll, tempura roll, tempura Oreo and rainbow poke bowl. I do wish I could have ordered the yam batter balls. Service: The server constantly made sure to check up on us. Ambiance: Restrooms and tables appeared clean. I appreciate that there were two main seating areas to choose from when the restaurant isn't too busy. If I am not mistaken, I believe I saw fans in the ceiling which is specially helpful in the area where it gets muggy as mentioned by the person I went with.

Miso Soup and Cucumber Shrimp Salad

I found the Tomo Japanese Restaurant as I was walking around Arcata and am very pleased about the sushi they had to offer. Opening up with the miso soup and cucumber salad was a great start, I highly recommend the salad, it was fresh and crisp. The oyster shots were one of my favs for the night as well, perfect balance of citrus with the raw fish! Lastly the sashimi plate was delectable, I can't say that I was a fan of the octopus (personal bias opinion), but overall I was very happy with my dinner at Tomo.

Specialty Roll #6 $8.95

Happen'n sushi joint where all that's missing is the sake bombs. Young and loud, party crowd on an otherwise court Tuesday night. Maybe it's because Covid has so many other places shut down. Mostly groups of 4 coming in after...work/class/surfing/fishing...? Not sure there. Very casual and a good place to get your drink on with friends. Maybe not the best place for sushi. #1 special $8.75 the salmon skins comes across as delicious bacon bits. I'm a fan! Chirashi Sushi $23.95 is thinly sliced sashimi over rice. I'd like to see what you get from the Chefs Assorted Sashimi for $45.95. I hope it's more than double cuts for the price. Skipping this. Lemon Cured Salmon $4.75 for 2 price nigiri has a bright, lemon finish. Nice if you're a lemon fan. Too much for me. Hamachi $5.95 for 2 piece nigiri was buttery smooth. Good cut. Convenient to the square Happy service Good food

We went here for a family movie and dinner night. The wait was 25 minutes and so we ended up sitting at the bar. Luis was our bartender/server. He was very friendly and great service. The food was very yummy. We also had the sunomono salads, miso soup, and veggie gyoza appetizers but I didn't take photos of them. The gyoza were so good! We ordered 4 rolls. The cucumbers were exceptionally crispy and fresh. Ingredients are key to good sushi. I would definitely recommend Tomo. It's an upbeat atmosphere and kid friendly.

Tomo has such a good variety of rolls! Everything is very fresh and very tasty. Their appetizers are also always worth trying. Very neat location and full bar! Their cocktails are so good! They have really good happy hour menu items as well, daily from 4 to 5:30 I think!

Tomos has been our favorite restaurant in Arcata for a couple of decades. I've yet to find a better sushi restaurant, anywhere.

The service was good, and the ambiance was fine. But, with the exception of the miso soup and edamame, the sushi rolls were... not good.

I'm hoping this helps another vegan out there, or anyone really. We came in for an early ish dinner. At the time it was pretty mellow but that was appreciated because we just needed to relax and enjoy sitting down after hiking the last few days. Something fresh and not too rich where we could take out time and not feel gross. I was curious about the soul options being vegan or not because miso usually isn't, but they had this yummy sounding mushroom and veggie broth soup with vegetables and tofu (I think it's called Kenshin jiru but I might be absolutely butchering that). GET IT! It's not too heavy but has such a great flavor, plus the fresh veggies and bits of raw tofu for protein (they accidentally forgot the tofu but when I asked my server if they could just bring it on the side for me they were super nice about it). I also got some standard edamame and avocado maki roll, both of these were "fine", they did the trick but weren't amazing. My partner had the large hot sake which he loved, and then a tuna maki roll and the omakase nigiri. Same thing with his maki, fine nothing to write home about, but he loooved his omakase. They didn't tell us what was on it but I think it was albacore, salmon, salmon roe, mackerel, yellowtail, and tuna. He said it was some of the best tasting fish/nigiri he's had in a while. Our server was great at refilling our waters and checking in making sure we had everything and was just very sweet, so we appreciated them a lot. We'd definitely recommend!

So beware and check the weather before going and dress accordingly. It's nice on sunny days but then you have to be mindful of the UV. I appreciate our waitress getting our drinks and food out to us through the chaos of people being seated outside, then being reseated inside when room opened up, or like one table, just leaving! Their plum sake is very good, smooth and light. I also got a hot tea but that was only hot for a moment out there, the sake definitely did more to keep us warm. Their ramen bowls are now my favorite in downtown, the pork is DELICIOUS, the broth could be a drink on its own and the marinated egg has a perfectly soft yolk; it's a very pretty dish. My favorite sushi is split between the Russian roulette and the ocean queen (I think that's its name).

I left with the worst heartburn and likely due to whatever they fried it in. Golden salmon "specialty" roll. Meh. I've had a lot better at the other locally sushi places. Service: horrible. The place was 30 per cent full. It's Humboldt so I don't expect service to be quick. But the attitude of the wait person was abominable. I felt like we were wasting their time. Like they had somewhere else to be. Mind you this was 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. We saw them once again when they slapped down the check. Then they came to get it a few minutes later and we felt hurried out the door. The bus person was seen whisking food and debris off the tables instead of wiping them down. Several tables. The waiter's attitude was hurried, impatient, and not even a "how is your meal". Ambience: it was nice to be out on the deck. Otherwise nothing special. The host podium is crowded with stuff around it. It looks like they are storing things in the entrance. After hearing so much about how nice and it was, I was disappointed. I'd eat somewhere else and ride the elevator up to walk around the non-restaurant part of the rooftop to see the view. Honestly.
