I was charging my rental EV across the street, and I noticed that this place was just a couple of minutes walk away, so I decided to stop in for an early dinner. I'm glad I did. The place was clean and bright. Definitely a Japanese "vibe". I sit down at my table, and it was coming toward the end of happy hour, so I decided to order a couple of things off the happy hour menu. I started out with the "mini monsters" a smaller portion of their "monster rolls" I chose the Vegas roll. smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado & shrimp, tempura fried and topped with unagi sauce, , , and their dynamite sauce, and masago roe. . They were amazing. The tempura gave it a nice crunch, you could definitely taste the seafood, and the cream cheese and avocado played along very well. I liked the briny "pop" of the Masago, and the sauces were also very good. The dynamite sauce was not too spicy. Just enough that I knew it was there. I also had three of the grilled oysters, which also came with the dynamite sauce and the Masago on top. The oysters were perfectly grilled, you could tell that they were good quality, oysters, and again, the sauce and the Masago added to the flavor. I also liked the "greens" on top. They provided a nice pot of freshness. For dessert, I had the chocolate peanut butter mochi. The chocolate shell played very well with the creamy peanut butter ice cream . They charged me a 20% "large party" fee for my wife and I and our 3 young children! Most places only charge a large party fee if you are 6 people or over. We came to eat here after a long drive up from the Bay Area. There was no one there but they had us wait for about 15 minutes to be seated (I walk with a cane and have trouble standing). The service was very slow and the bento boxes came very late after everyone else was already done with the sushi and oysters. The kids were very fussy waiting forever for the bento boxes. The sushi was awful! The servers were all "non-Asian" and I'm assuming the kitchen staff was "non-Asian" as well because of the poor food. Very bad experience overall. Will not be returning. This is my sushi favorite place in all of Humboldt. Plenty of fish in the rolls and fun and inventive special rolls. The pieces don't fall apart between the dip and my mouth either. Don't you hate when that happens! The restaurant is always a little cold so I take my coat, but it's also great for pick up! Eating sushi spot at home is our favorite (don't forget to leave a tip still!). The salad is huge if you want a fun combination, my wife loves the oysters and knocks them back easily. Another time I called at 11:30 a.m. to treat myself to some delicious takeout lunch. Dude taking my order had me on the phone 18 minutes. Put me on hold twice. Took all the details of my order. My name. Number. Then said chipperly "That'll be ready at about 1:15." Like that's even remotely normal. He explained that they prioritize door dash orders ahead of people calling in. No sir. My first visit. The service was prompt and attentive. Our server, Nate, stayed alert but inconspicuous, which always earns an extra star from me. Our food was served promptly, and exactly as ordered I don't often eat in Sushi restaurants, but it was my friend's birthday and his pick. There were several vegetarian options available and the ones I chose were perfect. The vegetable tempura was light, crisp and fresh, with no fishy taste from being fried in used oil - also, Nate assured me the tentsuyu dipping sauce was vegetarian, which I'd forgotten to ask; the portabella roll was delicious, with really good hot wasabi and fresh shaved ginger. The hostess took our phone number and called us when our table was ready. Good thing about the location is there are plenty of shops to browse near by to kill time during long waits. The restaurant is clean and depending where you are seated, a little cramped. The bathrooms are clean and welll kept. We got seated when the rush had just passed but service was still a little slow. The menu is pretty standard, you'll find rolls you see at any other sushi restaurant. I recommend the Bakugan appetizer! We got 5 different rolls and each one was delicious. Other orders are missing rolls and the staff are rude, argumentative and refuse to compensate me or even act like they care. Try sushi spot if you want to pay high prices for an order you might not even get and deal with rude wait staff and management. Will not be giving them my business ever again. Oh, and their whole employee wellness program that forces the public to tip them is a joke. If they wanted to give the employees more money, they would raise their staff members pay and make the wait staff split the tips with the back. This place is pretty busy on a Saturday night. We came at 730 and still were able to get seats at the sushi bar though. I ordered a pink lady to drink. I don't think I am a huge fan of sake cocktails. This drink was ok, definitely better than the lady's day off. I will order regular cocktails and beer from now on though. I ordered the seat salmon roll which was shrimp tempura on the inside and seared honey salmon on the outside. The rolls was really good. The ingredients were super fresh and the roll itself was flavorful enough to eat without any dipping sauces. My friend let me try one of her iron lion pieces and that was really good as well. Her roll was pretty similar to mine but had smoked salmon, spicy mayo, and masago on top. I'm not sure I could taste the difference between the seared and the smoked salmon. Service was great. Even the sushi chef was super accommadating to the things we needed. The location is ideal being that it is next to the plaza and next to all the bars. Overall, this place was good. Ordered takeout via door dash Thursday 1/25/24 for my sick (infl-A, bronchitis) daughter at CPH. Miso soup, hamachi nigiri and spicy tuna. It gave her severe food poisoning. Still wasn't better today so when to Urgent Care in Eureka, they don't treat FP. Went to St Joe's, got treated. Nurse told her they've been several other cases from Sushi Spot within the last few days. We've eaten here before, not had issues like this. She did not need food poisoning on top of other illnesses. Five of us went to Sushi Spot, Arcata, 3/24 to celebrate my grandson's 27th b'day. Unfortunately we had Gloria for our server. Her extremely phony welcome should have been a clue. We ordered, 3 got their meals...approx 10 minutes later, one more dinner was served and I was told my dinner would be right out. I had ordered from the nightly special menu. At least 10 minutes later...the first 3 had waited a bit to eat, but I said to go ahead, they were finished before my dinner arrived. I asked for a to go box as Gloria with her fake smile brought my entree. I took 3 bites, but couldn't enjoy with my guests finished and ready to leave. Gloria did not apologize and seemed to take great delight in my disappointment. ( I did have an uncomfortable experience a couple of years previous with Gloria when she messed up my order and then argued with me re what I had ordered). I have had many wonderful meals there, with any of the other servers. In fact, we were there every Friday pm for years. Gloria is awful...at least to me and if and when I go back I will leave if she is there. Just not worth being put thru her actions again. My March 24 visit was a total disappointment. While the food was ok, the entire dining table was so sticky the menus and the chopsticks stuck to it, and the staff insisted it was clean. It was awful. I've been to so many sushi places and this was the only time I've ever had to ask the waitress the chefs name due to how awful the food came out (Shilo by the way). To kick things off I have to agree with my fellow Yelper Alex L. in regard to the name of this sushi spot... it's the most awfully fitting name they could have gone with and I'm not at all mad about it. And as I type this, I realize that it could be really weird eating fish while watching live fish swim around, but honestly, it wasn't. It was rather relaxing actually, who needs a television when you have live entertainment. Anyhoo, we decided to kick things off with some fried veggie gyoza and it did not disappoint. The portion size was perfect for two people to enjoy as an appetizer. For our main meal we decided to share three different rolls. I can't remember the names of them all, but I can say that they were all very tasty and filling. The restaurant itself is much larger than it appears on the outside. They offer a variety of seating, and it was super cozy and easy for two old friends to catch up and get lost in conversation. The staff was very friendly and the food came out quickly. Sushi Spot is an awful appropriate name considering it is literally the only sushi spot in town. It's a much needed niche to fill considering how crowded it was for a Wednesday night. And for the most part, it's a great place for a fish fix. I was seated right away at the bar with a front and center view of the Giants game. The bartender was a super nice and chatty fellow, two things I enjoy when in an unfamiliar town. I can't say my meal was perfect. The albacore in my roll was a little tough and I wasn't a huge fan of the pickled sides. There was plenty of flavor though. I especially enjoyed the tempura, which came in a generous portion, and the miso soup. It all paired well with the fine selection of beers, many regional, on tap. I ended up finishing out the game and staying until near closing and they were more than accommodating. I'd return without hesitation if back in this neck of the woods. read more
