We ate here with my daughter who was recently diagnosed with celiac disease. I had heard that they had gluten free options, and were careful about cross-contamination, but I was blown away by how helpful our server was with making sure my daughter's meal was safe. She right away inquired whether it had to be "celiac safe", and made sure that all of our dishes were labeled "celiac safe" for the kitchen, and helped us make substitutions for the items that couldn't be gluten free. This was our first experience eating out since the diagnosis, and I was nervous about how it would go, but Sushi Spot (and our very kind/helpful server) made this experience easy, and we are reassured that we won't have to completely give up eating out. Still waiting to see if other restaurants offer the same care for celiac diners. Until then, Sushi Spot will be our place to go! read more

The service was very friendly and attentive. It couldn't have been better. The ambience was also enjoyable. My kid really loved the aquariums, and he ate the egg part of his tamago sushi, which is what we expect. I only had a couple of grumbles about the food. One of my pieces of hamachi was torn and didn't look great. That's a minor gripe about presentation. The main issue was the rice. It was bland and more or less plain. Sushi rice should have some sweetness and a little tang. After all, it's meant to recreate the fermented rice from the old days before chefs learned how to make rice taste similar without taking so much time... Sushi is probably 90% about the rice and maybe 10% is the rest of what's on it. It is the main thing, really. It should not be bland. Also, their chefs had trouble forming the rice neatly, which is a skill issue. This was prepared in the back and might yield different results at the bar. For me, the real star (food-wise) was the plain sunomono. The cucumber was fresh and crispy and topped with thinly shredded carrot for a touch of color. I have eaten at many wonderful sushi spots since the 1980s when you had to order in Japanese because the only sushi chefs around in the U.S. were Japanese immigrants. I was charging my rental EV across the street, and I noticed that this place was just a couple of minutes walk away, so I decided to stop in for an early dinner. I'm glad I did. The place was clean and bright. Definitely a Japanese "vibe". I sit down at my table, and it was coming toward the end of happy hour, so I decided to order a couple of things off the happy hour menu. I started out with the "mini monsters" a smaller portion of their "monster rolls" I chose the Vegas roll. smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado & shrimp, tempura fried and topped with unagi sauce, , , and their dynamite sauce, and masago roe. . They were amazing. The tempura gave it a nice crunch, you could definitely taste the seafood, and the cream cheese and avocado played along very well. I liked the briny "pop" of the Masago, and the sauces were also very good. The dynamite sauce was not too spicy. Just enough that I knew it was there. I also had three of the grilled oysters, which also came with the dynamite sauce and the Masago on top. The oysters were perfectly grilled, you could tell that they were good quality, oysters, and again, the sauce and the Masago added to the flavor. I also liked the "greens" on top. They provided a nice pot of freshness. For dessert, I had the chocolate peanut butter mochi. The chocolate shell played very well with the creamy peanut butter ice cream . They charged me a 20% "large party" fee for my wife and I and our 3 young children! Most places only charge a large party fee if you are 6 people or over. We came to eat here after a long drive up from the Bay Area. There was no one there but they had us wait for about 15 minutes to be seated (I walk with a cane and have trouble standing). The service was very slow and the bento boxes came very late after everyone else was already done with the sushi and oysters. The kids were very fussy waiting forever for the bento boxes. The sushi was awful! The servers were all "non-Asian" and I'm assuming the kitchen staff was "non-Asian" as well because of the poor food. Very bad experience overall. Will not be returning. This is my sushi favorite place in all of Humboldt. Plenty of fish in the rolls and fun and inventive special rolls. The pieces don't fall apart between the dip and my mouth either. Don't you hate when that happens! The restaurant is always a little cold so I take my coat, but it's also great for pick up! Eating sushi spot at home is our favorite (don't forget to leave a tip still!). The salad is huge if you want a fun combination, my wife loves the oysters and knocks them back easily. So, I've never been so disappointed. We arrived approximately at 2:30 pm. The restaurant was quite full. But there was no wait. The water we were served was room temperature, no ice. There was about 30 flies in the middle of the restaurant, just hanging out. We ordered gyoza, it arrived pretty quickly. Then the sushi. The sushi didn't arrive for another 40 minutes. Like, what? I definitely ordered the wrong roll, It was underwhelming. But that isn't on them. That's on me. But also, on them. Another time I called at 11:30 a.m. to treat myself to some delicious takeout lunch. Dude taking my order had me on the phone 18 minutes. Put me on hold twice. Took all the details of my order. My name. Number. Then said chipperly "That'll be ready at about 1:15." Like that's even remotely normal. He explained that they prioritize door dash orders ahead of people calling in. No sir. The hostess took our phone number and called us when our table was ready. Good thing about the location is there are plenty of shops to browse near by to kill time during long waits. The restaurant is clean and depending where you are seated, a little cramped. The bathrooms are clean and welll kept. We got seated when the rush had just passed but service was still a little slow. The menu is pretty standard, you'll find rolls you see at any other sushi restaurant. I recommend the Bakugan appetizer! We got 5 different rolls and each one was delicious. This place is pretty busy on a Saturday night. We came at 730 and still were able to get seats at the sushi bar though. I ordered a pink lady to drink. I don't think I am a huge fan of sake cocktails. This drink was ok, definitely better than the lady's day off. I will order regular cocktails and beer from now on though. I ordered the seat salmon roll which was shrimp tempura on the inside and seared honey salmon on the outside. The rolls was really good. The ingredients were super fresh and the roll itself was flavorful enough to eat without any dipping sauces. My friend let me try one of her iron lion pieces and that was really good as well. Her roll was pretty similar to mine but had smoked salmon, spicy mayo, and masago on top. I'm not sure I could taste the difference between the seared and the smoked salmon. Service was great. Even the sushi chef was super accommadating to the things we needed. The location is ideal being that it is next to the plaza and next to all the bars. Overall, this place was good. We checked out this place when we were up in Arcata taking our daughter to get settled in at Cal Poly Humboldt . Such great sushi. We started with the gyoza and shrimp shu mai. Both were delicious. Loved their California rolls with little shrimp versus the usual pollack mix. So much better the way they make it. Also had life changing uni - we had to get 4 orders it was so delicious. I literally can't stop thinking about it now that we're back home. All the other rolls were super fresh and delicious as well, but if you like uni, theirs is absolutely unbelievable. Other orders are missing rolls and the staff are rude, argumentative and refuse to compensate me or even act like they care. Try sushi spot if you want to pay high prices for an order you might not even get and deal with rude wait staff and management. Will not be giving them my business ever again. Oh, and their whole employee wellness program that forces the public to tip them is a joke. If they wanted to give the employees more money, they would raise their staff members pay and make the wait staff split the tips with the back. Nurse told her they've been several other cases from Sushi Spot within the last few days. We've eaten here before, not had issues like this. She did not need food poisoning on top of other illnesses. With totally unique menus and atmospheres. There is something a bit intimate about the spot. They don't take reservations, so it's first come first served. The tempura rolls are well worth the wait.
