Husband and I went on a weekend trip to Eureka and craved sushi. We found this hole in the wall sushi restaurant which has some of the best sushi I've ever had, and I eat lots from all over the world! The flavor of each roll we have is so distinct and well balanced. Service is standard, nothing overly friendly but courteous. We enjoyed their food so much we came back before leaving town.

I hate leaving bad reviews, and this one hurts because it's the only place I'll eat sushi from in Humboldt. Unfortunately this is the third or fourth bad experience with this place and i won't be back. First time I found a hair in my to go order, called and let them know, they asked me to come in to get a new one. I live 20 minutes away and I had a flight to catch so I didn't bother nor did I bother asking for a refund. Second time I get home with my to go order to find they forgot the 2 main toppings that go on my roll, eel sauce and caviar. In my opinion the eel sauce is what makes the dish. I let it go. And now for a third time, I pick up two rolls ($30 + tip), get home, just to find the same things forgotten. I specifically requested no wasabi, extra ginger like I do every single time and 9/10 times they fail to do it. It gets to a point where it's just ridiculous. The rolls have 4-5 ingredients, how can they mess it up over and over again. They refuse to refund, their solution is come back and get a remake. I don't want to get back in the car, drive 20 minutes to the next town over to get a remake of food I've been waiting for the past hour to eat. Really sad to see good restaurants in Humboldt go downhill in quality, especially while their prices continue to go up.

Small and quaint which makes it unique to the area. The rolls and sashimi were on point! Would I come again?!? Heck YES!!

Checked out this place on the way to Oregon. The sushi tasted fresh and well-made. Ordered the Salmon, Shrimp, and Spicy Tuna Roll. The service was fast and attentive, and the ambiance was very casual.

On December 23rd, my sister and I were hoping to grab sushi for lunch, but many of the Arcata spots were closed for the holiday season. We were thrilled to learn that Sushi Tao was open! This small sushi spot had a delicious array of options, great service, and quality sushi rolls. We had a great lunch there, service was awesome, and I can't wait to go back! Many people were in and out picking up orders, so it seems to also be a popular pick for takeout.

The gyoza was fresh. Nothing exciting about the flavor. The spicy tuna roll was disappointing. The rice was a little stiff, tuna was only slightly better than what u get in a store bought sushi roll. I'm shocked people in the reviews have said this is the best sushi they've ever had. Should I have tried something else? Idk But I'm pretty bummed out that it cost $25

Super tasty off the beaten path sushi place in Arcata. It's a mom n pop shop atmosphere but the food is fine dining style. We both got a roll with salmon in it, can't remember the names but they were both delicious. The Miso soup, tempura veggies and edamame are all bomb too. Made a mistake of ordering three sakis, they came in a nice size bottle with more than enough for the three of us. Portions are generous and the food is fresh. Got the seaweed salad this trip and it was great, nice roasted sesame flavor. This is now our favorite place to get sushi in Arcata

Little spot, no frills, perfect for a low key lunch. With upscale food. Food was delicious and very affordable. We had green tea along with our meal. We ordered a couple of specials and eel crunch.

Good sushi but if you order online you don't get wasabi or ginger. Kinda ruins the experience.

You've got some hot items like katsu, salmon, karaage, potato croquettes, and eggplant. I appreciate them having spam musubi, but it looks and tastes like it's wrapped in plastic and left under the heat lamp all day. Also, if you're gonna have musubi, you ought to have some sriracha, which they don't. The sushi is small and offerings are unremarkable. Appetizers are fairly standard, like inari and edamame, and miso soup, as well as some kind of kimchi. Rolls are mostly the basic California with the variety being the slice of fish laid on top of it. Only alternates are a veggie roll and a tempura shrimp roll. Soy sauce is free but you're charged extra for a pea-sized bit of wasabi along with pickled ginger. Kinda cutthroat. It's like selling hotdogs with mustard, but ketchup is extra. One standard roll, one musubi and tap water along with a tip came to $20. If you're fiending for katsu and are on a really tight lunch schedule, mayyyybe? Otherwise, I really do think it's overpriced for what it is. I don't get the comments on service. What service? Aside from the person at the register, service is nonexistent. Nobody is served at their table. Once you grab your items, the only person you interact with is the one ringing you up. No host, server, bartender, anything. So I really don't know what the initial volley of great reviews is all about. Seems thoroughly average to me.

The place was clean and bright. Definitely a Japanese "vibe". I sit down at my table, and it was coming toward the end of happy hour, so I decided to order a couple of things off the happy hour menu. I started out with the "mini monsters" a smaller portion of their "monster rolls" I chose the Vegas roll. smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado & shrimp, tempura fried and topped with unagi sauce, , , and their dynamite sauce, and masago roe. . They were amazing. The tempura gave it a nice crunch, you could definitely taste the seafood, and the cream cheese and avocado played along very well. I liked the briny "pop" of the Masago, and the sauces were also very good. The dynamite sauce was not too spicy. Just enough that I knew it was there. I also had three of the grilled oysters, which also came with the dynamite sauce and the Masago on top. The oysters were perfectly grilled, you could tell that they were good quality, oysters, and again, the sauce and the Masago added to the flavor. I also liked the "greens" on top. They provided a nice pot of freshness. For dessert, I had the chocolate peanut butter mochi. The chocolate shell played very well with the creamy peanut butter ice cream . Just a fantastic ending to a great meal. The prices at the place are reasonable, even more than this case, as it was the happy hour. . A great meal, for a good price. Thanks!

We came to eat here after a long drive up from the Bay Area. There was no one there but they had us wait for about 15 minutes to be seated (I walk with a cane and have trouble standing). The service was very slow and the bento boxes came very late after everyone else was already done with the sushi and oysters. The kids were very fussy waiting forever for the bento boxes. The sushi was awful! The servers were all "non-Asian" and I'm assuming the kitchen staff was "non-Asian" as well because of the poor food. Very bad experience overall. Will not be returning. Cost us $155 to feed our little family.

I'm hoping this helps another vegan out there, or anyone really. We came in for an early ish dinner. At the time it was pretty mellow but that was appreciated because we just needed to relax and enjoy sitting down after hiking the last few days. Something fresh and not too rich where we could take out time and not feel gross. I was curious about the soul options being vegan or not because miso usually isn't, but they had this yummy sounding mushroom and veggie broth soup with vegetables and tofu (I think it's called Kenshin jiru but I might be absolutely butchering that). GET IT! It's not too heavy but has such a great flavor, plus the fresh veggies and bits of raw tofu for protein (they accidentally forgot the tofu but when I asked my server if they could just bring it on the side for me they were super nice about it). I also got some standard edamame and avocado maki roll, both of these were "fine", they did the trick but weren't amazing. My partner had the large hot sake which he loved, and then a tuna maki roll and the omakase nigiri. Same thing with his maki, fine nothing to write home about, but he loooved his omakase. They didn't tell us what was on it but I think it was albacore, salmon, salmon roe, mackerel, yellowtail, and tuna. He said it was some of the best tasting fish/nigiri he's had in a while. Our server was great at refilling our waters and checking in making sure we had everything and was just very sweet, so we appreciated them a lot. We'd definitely recommend!
