Ordered the mango dango roll and miso soup from the menu and then asked if we could go off menu to enjoy the sushi bar. All of our nigiri bites were fabulous. The owner/sushi chef said he had personally smoked the salmon that day and I asked for it lightly seared - it was my favorite bite of the night. Well curated fish, excellent service. Thursday night 2/19/25 6:30 PM table for two

We came to this place after a long drive. Everything is so delicious! This little place has a very charming ambience. All the staff are welcoming, friendly and professional. We would be back again next time we come to visit the area.

I've eaten a lot of sushi in my life and I can confidently say Tanuki's Den is on another level. Jake consistently creates the most original, well-thought-out rolls I've ever had. Every bite feels intentional and perfectly balanced. The Friday night omakase is an experience you can't miss. The space itself is small, cozy, and welcoming, it makes the whole evening feel intimate and special. You're not just eating sushi; you're part of something unique. I've been to big-name sushi spots like Nobu and other top-tier restaurants, but Tanuki's Den truly rivals them all. You can tell that there is a lot of passion and care that goes into every dish, and the service makes it feel like you have your own private chef for the night. If you love sushi and want something extraordinary, this is the place.

Yamarito was delicious! Fast and friendly service. Small indoor eating area. Miso soup was really good as well. Great spot for lunch since it's quick. Wishing they had less packaging for their wasabi, ginger & soy sauce. Otherwise a great new spot to check out in Arcata!

Not only is the food here relatively affordable, but the portions are generous, and the service is the most friendly I've experienced in this area. The servers and staff are genuinely good humans who I enjoy seeing each time I eat here. You can get plenty of mediocre food all around this area, but Susukino is one of the places I feel confident my money will always be well spent. The restaurant has a swanky, cool vibe. The food is fresh, creative, and authentic. You can't go wrong. I think a lot of people who go out to eat "ramen" are used to what comes in the plastic bags, and are expecting that consistency and high salt level. This is not that ramen. This is as authentic Northern Japanese as it gets (my family is from there. Just overall, I'm so glad these folks are here. They're doing it right.

We ordered the Chinese Style Lamb Stew, Cheese Corn, Kung Pao Vegetables, and it came with a side of banchan. Every single dish here was absolutely delicious and piping hot! We ended up ordering a second plate of banchan because it was so good. The daikon radish had the most satisfying crunch and the others- cabbage and bean sprouts were very well pickled too! Cheese corn was sweet and honestly a good pairing with the very soury/ pickled soup. The kung pao vegetables would have definitely fooled me if I wasn't told it was mushroom. The batter holds on the oyster mushrooms just like chicken does. Well seasoned. Service was very impressive - there was a single waitress serving lots of tables. She had amazing recommendations and really seemed like she knew what she was doing. Very kind and attentive the entire time. Would love to return.

The pan fried chicken dumplings were from Costco, the spicy beef ramen left much to be desired and had an extremely dry egg. And then my friends chow mein came out half way through our meal (they forgot), had no veggies and was sweet?? They kind of attempted to fix it, so we were willing to let things go. That was one thing, then as we were waiting for them to pick up our card to pay, our server, Mira, loudly complained to her coworker about us sending the food back and how we were "pissed" (we weren't, until she started almost yelling about the situation to her coworker). Extremely unprofessional. Makes us second wanting to return in the future.

That was such a great experience that I stopped in again on a similar road trip in 2019. Fast forward to 2026. My husband and I were taking that same route and made sure that Arcata and Salt were on the itinerary. I was looking forward to the amazing risotto I'd had in the past! I was disappointed to discover that the location, the vibe, and the menu have all changed. That said, we still enjoyed our meal. I ordered the Market Salad. It was fresh and the dressing was light and delicious. It was large enough to share. Not realizing how large the salad would be, my husband also ordered the calamari as an appetizer. It was cooked perfectly with a light breading and it wasn't not greasy at all. For our main course, we split the Salsiccia pizza. It was the perfect size for us to share, especially given the appetizers we had. The amount of toppings were on the sparser side, but that just might be the nature of that pizza. Side note on the service: Our server was friendly enough but she was not very familiar with the menu. I asked if I could substitute the lettuce in the Market Salad for romaine and she didn't think that was possible. I explained I didn't want field greens and/or big leaves and she assured me those were not used in the salad. She said she thought it was iceberg and it was chopped very fine. With that, I ordered the salad. When it arrived, it was actually bibb lettuce that was left in relatively large pieces. At least it wasn't field greens! In their new location, they have a great patio. If I were a local, I think this could be a great place to hang out and enjoy their crafty cocktails. But since I'm not, I don't think I'll be back to Salt.

I left with the worst heartburn and likely due to whatever they fried it in. Golden salmon "specialty" roll. Meh. I've had a lot better at the other locally sushi places. Service: horrible. The place was 30 per cent full. It's Humboldt so I don't expect service to be quick. But the attitude of the wait person was abominable. I felt like we were wasting their time. Like they had somewhere else to be. Mind you this was 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. We saw them once again when they slapped down the check. Then they came to get it a few minutes later and we felt hurried out the door. The bus person was seen whisking food and debris off the tables instead of wiping them down. Several tables. The waiter's attitude was hurried, impatient, and not even a "how is your meal". Ambience: it was nice to be out on the deck. Otherwise nothing special. The host podium is crowded with stuff around it. It looks like they are storing things in the entrance. After hearing so much about how nice and it was, I was disappointed. I'd eat somewhere else and ride the elevator up to walk around the non-restaurant part of the rooftop to see the view. Honestly.
