Returned again for the first time in a long while. Wow! I'm sure glad I did. Our appetizers (vegetable gyoza and korokke) were fantastic, and I appreciated they were served ahead of the main selections and one at a time. We got the rainbow roll, the crispy spicy roll, the negi hama roll, and a special crab roll topped with crispy salmon skins that I can't remember the name of. All were delicious! To kick things off I have to agree with my fellow Yelper Alex L. in regard to the name of this sushi spot... it's the most awfully fitting name they could have gone with and I'm not at all mad about it. Way to own it! My friend and I were seated right away at a nice little bar area in front of a beautiful fish tank. And as I type this, I realize that it could be really weird eating fish while watching live fish swim around, but honestly, it wasn't. It was rather relaxing actually, who needs a television when you have live entertainment. Anyhoo, we decided to kick things off with some fried veggie gyoza and it did not disappoint. The portion size was perfect for two people to enjoy as an appetizer. For our main meal we decided to share three different rolls. I can't remember the names of them all, but I can say that they were all very tasty and filling. The restaurant itself is much larger than it appears on the outside. They offer a variety of seating, and it was super cozy and easy for two old friends to catch up and get lost in conversation. The staff was very friendly and the food came out quickly. Sushi Spot is an awful appropriate name considering it is literally the only sushi spot in town. It's a much needed niche to fill considering how crowded it was for a Wednesday night. And for the most part, it's a great place for a fish fix. I was seated right away at the bar with a front and center view of the Giants game. The bartender was a super nice and chatty fellow, two things I enjoy when in an unfamiliar town. I can't say my meal was perfect. The albacore in my roll was a little tough and I wasn't a huge fan of the pickled sides. There was plenty of flavor though. I especially enjoyed the tempura, which came in a generous portion, and the miso soup. It all paired well with the fine selection of beers, many regional, on tap. I ended up finishing out the game and staying until near closing and they were more than accommodating. I'd return without hesitation if back in this neck of the woods. read more

Five of us went to Sushi Spot, Arcata, 3/24 to celebrate my grandson's 27th b'day. Unfortunately we had Gloria for our server. Her extremely phony welcome should have been a clue. We ordered, 3 got their meals...approx 10 minutes later, one more dinner was served and I was told my dinner would be right out. I had ordered from the nightly special menu. At least 10 minutes later...the first 3 had waited a bit to eat, but I said to go ahead, they were finished before my dinner arrived. I asked for a to go box as Gloria with her fake smile brought my entree. I took 3 bites, but couldn't enjoy with my guests finished and ready to leave. Gloria did not apologize and seemed to take great delight in my disappointment. ( I did have an uncomfortable experience a couple of years previous with Gloria when she messed up my order and then argued with me re what I had ordered). I have had many wonderful meals there, with any of the other servers. In fact, we were there every Friday pm for years. Gloria is awful...at least to me and if and when I go back I will leave if she is there. Just not worth being put thru her actions again. The food is great and I've never had a problem with any of the other employees there, in fact, I've enjoyed talking with them. My advice is, beware of GLORIA! read more

Highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar. The chefs were interactive and made the experience complete. Fish was super fresh and the custom creations from the chef were a small but massively appreciated touch. A must go if you are in the area and enjoy sushi. read more

Wow. I was incredibly disappointed by everything I tried and entirely confounded why people like this place? Could the locations be that different? The unagi was gross, the rolls were gross, the rice was somehow both over cooked and undercooked. All-around one of the worst meals I've ever had, and most of it ended up in the trash. It was desperately mid. Our friends drink tasted like windex and sadness. Some fish was okay and some fish was pretty questionable. The waiter shook us down for a bigger tip as we were leaving. I was soar and tired my muscles needed to revitalized I came here with my lady friend, she ate tempura yams, and drank my miso soup, So if you take your lady friend, just know there will be no miso soup, left. Best rolls around. We love the Sushi Spot for its very interesting rolls. The Crispy Spicy roll (deepfried tuna roll) is amazing, as are the Moonstone, Iron Lion, and the Caterpillar. We always love coming here. One thing to note is that the service is slow so please come when you have plenty of time for lunch. One other thing -- the Spot was very cold when we were there last week (waitress said that only the manager could adjust the temperature -- the a/c was on when it was 65 degrees out -- go figure) -- so bring a sweater. read more

This is always our first stop for dinner in Arcata. The sushi is awesome! We really gorged this time. It isn't exactly kid friendly but my kids survived. Ha ha. My wife and I came in for dinner and they would not accept her Mexican ID. Waitress, Kate, made an excuse that it is not accepted by ABC but that is completely wrong and not what the regulations say at all. We asked to speak to the manager and he was not available to address the blatant racism by Kate. Pure discrimination by kate against my wife and we will not be going back. She wouldn't even look at my wife when she offered to show her the place where her birthdate is located on the ID. Terrible look for Kate and the manager of this place. Sushi is ok (not great-just ok) but the service is completely awful. I went there for lunch the other day, and was sat by the greeter. What's worse is the place was barely full and that it took them more than 10 minutes to get service. As I got up to leave.(because it was taking too long) they asked me if I needed anything and I said no. this is the third time that I've eaten at this establishment and I could tell you that if the owner knew how business was run at these stores, he would not be very happy. read more

Bad Sushi. Don't normally write negative reviews, but so many things wrong with this place. Arrived at my pick up time but order wasnt ready for another 10 min. This wouldn't have been a big deal if the sushi was amazing but.... I've had quality sushi so I'm baffled at what they serve at this place: - Brown over ripe avocado - Tiny miniscule shrimp instead of large shrimp which I highly doubt is fresh - Dried out ginger - Cooked salmon instead of raw salmon in sushi - Masago when I asked for none and my receipt showed that. We threw most of this in the trash after we tasted it, and would have returned it for a refund if we weren't already heading north out of town. Los Angeles is a hard act to follow when it comes to sushi. Sushi spot does it's best to serve up decent fresh fare. As so often seems the case in Humboldt, we need to look for consistency--in the quality of the fish served, portions, service, etc. Unfortunately with the to-go orders chopsticks or soy sauce might be missing or some little dish of sauce hasn't been included. We don't know whether to chalk that up to being in Humboldt or what. But we do have to say that we appreciate the Creativity that goes into some of their dishes, and that it's usually really delicious. We wish that they would serve smaller roles so that we could try more kinds. It's also the case that the hot food is not the strong suit here if you want hot food, try Tomo. read more

The Atmosphere: It's cramped. Seems like a very trendy place that hosts a lot of college students, so of course squeezing in as many patrons would be in their best interest, not necessarily the customer's. We were seated right by the door in a small corner, I kept hitting the room divider with my elbows, and my small purse barely had a spot let alone my body. The Food: The food is comparable to most sushi places in this area. I didn't feel like it offers anything special, but it need taste like the fish was fresh and other ingredients. My only gripe about the food is that the sushi rice we were served seems hard and old. but the sushi vinegar made it edible. The Price: I'd say the price is a little much. I'd rather go to other sushi places maybe in Eureka for the same price range. As far as value, I think it is lacking. The Service: The server we had was great, when she actually had a chance to come around. I'm not really sure if they are spread thin across the whole restaurant or if they just suck. Our server was very friendly, that's pretty much all I can say that's positive. We waited to water refills for a while, and for her to come around so we can request plates on eat on. All in all, this sushi experience wasn't bad but wasn't great. I wouldn't recommend this place out of all the places in the area, but it will do in a pinch. read more

We've been regulars at Sushi Spot for years. Tonight we ordered takeout. All of the fish (sake, ahi, and hamachi) in the rolls and the butsugiri tasted bad and smelled fishy. We ended up throwing most of our $90 order out. read more

Sushi snob from LA here. Every time I eat at a sushi restaurant in a different locale or small town I get nervous. Everything was perfect. Ordered miso soups, the creamy shrimp cocktail, the rainbow roll (which has shrimp inside instead of crab, which I loved!), spicy tuna roll, moonstone roll, and salmon sushi. When the rolls can I knew we ordered too much food because each was 10 pieces. And we ate EVERYTHING. I am painfully full as I write this. For desert, we had local ice cream from Arcata Scoop. Some of the ice cream ice ever had in my life (they have a local shop which we got ice cream from as well). read more

Mmm, Sushi Spot. Why you so good??? Honestly, the first time I came here, I was not impressed in the least. My waitress was in an incredibly bad mood and ended up giving my order to another customer. After about an hour of waiting I inquired about my food and she claimed that she had already given it to me. I ended up leaving without anything because I was on a time schedule. The next time I reluctantly came back with a friend who swore by Sushi Spot. We sat at the bar watching the sushi chefs, who were super entertaining and made our food really fast (They hand you your rolls directly! Yay, no confusion). There are so many rolls to choose from. I usually order their Vegas roll and the spider crab roll. If I'm not ordering sushi, I usually get their tempura basket or their curry topped with chicken katsu. The curry portions are HUGE, so come hungry! The price range is pretty fair--its not the fanciest sushi in Humboldt, but it's not super expensive either. Plus tea is on the house. Really lovely presentation overall. I go quite often now and have never had a problem with the staff ever since my first visit. In fact, the waitresses are extremely attentive and very friendly... So after having dined here at least 5 times I have to update this review. I am not really that impressed with this place. Last several times I came in the place was hot, like sweaty-damp air-hot! Yucky.... Today I sat at the bar and the sushi behind the glass just looked sort of dried out... but what really brought me back to updating this review was the fact that AGAIN I was late coming back from lunch this has happened every single time I ate here for lunch, I have to stop letting others suggest where to eat when I have limited amount of time. For one roll each and a bowl of miso we where there over an hour.....Again waiting for the check for way way too long, today there was less of an excuse as the place wasn't packed even at lunch hour. The waitress was wiping down tables while customers waited to be served and checks to be processed- there wasn't yet anyone waiting for a table though,...sort of seems obvious what priorities where out of order. I couldn't even get her to make eye contact with me, she seemed out of it or to just be plain ignoring us. From now on I would rather eat at Sushi Tao if I am in Arcata. The menu might be smaller but the fish seems to be better quality and for certain the service is better and faster! read more

The sushi chefs specials is the reason I come here, creative and often very unique. The twists on adding little ingredients that completely change the flavor and creates a sonic boom in my mouth. I love the use of shisho, mango, cilantro, honey sirracha with fairy high grade fish. I wish there were more specials with Oysters especially since they are local and fresh and their my favorite with an Asian spin. The house sake is delicious!! They serve local Eel River Organic IPA. The service could be better all around the restaurant but especially at the front when you first walk in, sometimes it detours me but once I sit down I'm super happy I did. There is usually a line out the door and for some reason they refuse to take reservations. I have also been there one time, saw my name on the top of the waiting list, then an employee with her mom came in and was seated before me. I even said to the girl "I think I was here before her" and they came back "Oh no, they have been waiting a long time"!! I'm very very happy to report that weekend dining at Sushi Spot is no longer mythology. Recently remodeled, this place is now super comfy. The staff are generally awesome, friendly, and accommodating. As far as food... If quality and cut of sea fare matter to you... This is the only game in town. In a coastal community with a decent ocean fishery, this is literally the only sushi site that conveys this fact. This is our go to spot for lunch. Their food is always good and their service is friendly and great too. We are picky when it comes to Japanese food and especially sushi, and they do a good job here. It's not quite the caliber that you'd get in the bigger cities like San Francisco, but in our opinion, it's the best sushi on the north coast. We enjoy experimenting with their daily specials menu. They are creative. On their regular menu, we especially like their bento boxes. Just a tip: they get really busy during lunchtime. We eat here all the time and love their food. It's great that they deliver via DoorDash for when we're busy and can't make it there for dine in or to pick up takeout. We also appreciate that they strive to use sustainable seafood and that they offer brown rice sushi. And yay for gluten free tempura! Yummy and healthy!
