I come up to Arcata about twice a year. When I do, I make it a point to come here. This is outstanding sushi with a lot of vegan and vegetarian options. I've never tried the omnivore options but there is no doubt they're just as quality as the non-meat options. The sheer variety and creativity of different flavors are undeniable! Who would have though to make a roll with almond butter and make it so damn delicious? Keep up the good work, you guys! Your staff and preparation are better than what we have in the Bay Area. The Sushi Spot is an exceptional Japanese restaurant located just off the Plaza in Arcata. Clean and professional with an enjoyable atmosphere, it has a menu priced competitively at about 18.00 for dinner. Excellent service and a pleasant experience avails itself without undue formality. Though firmly anchored in the Japanese style of cuisine, they also innovate in taste and variation. Traditional and contemporary understanding of fundamental principles exhibited both surprisingly, and well. The new menu depicts all their sushi and many dishes clearly, with photographs and descriptions in a straightforward manner. They offer their best to address dietary concerns and innovative interests, though this may be limited to within reason. While responsive and considerate, they will at times be hoping you're flexible about getting in, due to their first come first served seating. This may seem less certain but is more accommodating, as Arcata is a student town among other things. Meaning there are a fair few that have little to do with reservations. The result is that neither you nor they are left looking at a perfectly good table held aside for someone that got (ahem), distracted, especially when a short wait or quick call when your table is ready makes a perfectly suitable arrangement. The Plaza has a lively atmosphere that can be expected at peak hours, especially in popular venues such as this. Lunch avails itself from noon on weekdays right through to the Happy Hours, when things start to pick up. This may be due to the deal on tap. They open 7 days, including 4:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday. The staff seems practiced in ways of finding it a pleasure to serve. I have also read reviews that attest to the service being excellent and invariably friendly. Take out and sushi platters for parties are available. Call ahead if you are looking for prodigious amounts, no little care and work go into their arrangements. In all, it is perfectly suited for those who would belly up to the sushi bar for due consideration from the itamae, and/or get brown rice and miso soup the way it should be. Fundamental authenticity, innovative gastronomy, excellent atmosphere and exceptional value can still be found in Humboldt county. read more

This is one of my favorite spots here in Arcata. The food is delicious and I always leave satisfied!! Whenever I go the waiters are always so friendly and checking up on me. I have tried other sushi spots in the area but this one has been my favorite one. The only down fall is they seem to use SINK WATER. That is one thing I'm not okay with, if you sit in the back you can see them refilling the pitcher in the sink. Price is okay kind of high for some items. Definitely check this place out though for sushi, wish I could go more often but it does get pricy! read more

I do feel that as a food business they need to get with the changes have someone answering phone and another doing orders as there is no dine in available should be able to have 2 people up front and another phone line open that busy signal and only having one line when times are very different right now is super annoying. Be prepared even if you call in your going to wait 20 min to 30 min in a line down the street so bring music lol worth the wait yes but we don't go there as much as we would like because of this so hopefully they address this issue I'm sure they know it's a serious issue and they need to change as the community changes to accommodate these times much love read more

I was a massive fan of their food and services until the last time I ate here, in February. Oyster shots? Awesome! Sashimi? Huge and delicious. Fresh AF wasabi game? On fleek. Here's a tip (in addition to the massive one I left the server after we paid him - in cash, because we're proper criminals): IF you suspect that your patrons just dined and dashed, maybe ask their server if they paid (and tipped 28%) BEFORE (or even INSTEAD of) sending whatever Rivers Cuomo-looking MF-er out from behind the bar to interrogate them in the streets, like dogs. And maybe don't send someone who is 120 pounds, soaking wet. "We paid, but if we didn't -- what are YOU going to do about it?" My husband asked, getting in his Philly bag as I weighed the pros and cons of pulling out my knife. It turns out we have something in common! We both know how to cut fresh fish. I worked in food service for many, many years and I have seen some scary and borderline sociopathic behavior from both sides of the sushi bar. But, I have never encountered such wild ineptitude in the realm of customer service before. And that's saying something. You should be ashamed. If you have a hankering for sushi, and you're in the area, go to Sushi Tao. At least there, if the employees mistake you for a thief, you won't be able to understand it because they're actually Asian and not white, privileged "bros" who routinely send knives to a gun fight. read more

I ordered the Sunshine Roll and the vegetarian miso soup. I wish I ordered two Sunshine Rolls because it was so good and I've never had a vegetarian sushi like it. However the miso soup wasn't great. I'm not sure if it's because it's vegetarian so it's missing some special ingredient but it didn't taste right - it was pretty bland. I would go back just to order the Sunshine Rolls. My favorite sushi place in town. The SO and I decided to order takeaway last Saturday and we knew we were going in late, around 830. Asked for a seat at the bar. Ordered our food and had beers while we waited. And waited. And waited. During the near hour that we were waiting for our food, I saw our server (the bartender) come out to check up on the Giants game on television more than he did on us. Finally, the food comes, the bag which I saw readied 15 minutes earlier, though our server claimed it had just come out. Get home, no soy sauce, no wasabi, no chopsticks. Takeout is supposed to make it an easy night at home, but this wasn't the case. Called to complain about the lack of service. Food is always good here, and usually the service. we've had home delivery thru door dash on three occasions. the sushi is good. my problem is that i have never had sushi delivered without wasabi. the first time it happened, i thought a mistake had been made. after the second time, i considered that it must be a policy. so, on the third order, i asked for extra wasabi. when delivered, i discovered a very small amount of this spice. there must be a shortage of wasabi due to the pandemic. i would recommend purchasing wasabi from another sushi restaurant so you can truly enjoy sushi spot's sushi. read more

I've been going to sushi spot since I moved up in January. I went 2 times in person before COVID and have been ordering for pick up / delivery ever since. I have been satisfied every time. Any roll I get, I always like. Just a really solid sushi spot. I usually get the Spicy Tuna and Ichiban roll, but this time got the Summer in The City. Oysters are absolutely delicious and have this velvety, buttery quality to them that I have only rarely found in oysters. the sushi is always great, but the customer service still leaves a bit to be desired. You can see that some of the staff are really trying but other times it's awful. I've called before to place orders and the phone is either busy, rings and no one answers, or I get put on a never ending hold. LOUSY SERVICE OVERSHADOWS GOOD SUSHI How I wish I didn't have to downgrade this local business, but the apathetic, unprofessional service was just too much to let go without comment. First the good -- good prices, well made sushi rolls (good balance between rice and filling), nice atmosphere. Fish is fresh, and they have some fun combos. Now the bad -- really uneven service and no understanding of how to mitigate a bad situation. Started off well. We were seated at a nice table by a friendly-enough hostess. Orders were taken promptly. Small annoying things started to happen. The dinkiest amount of ginger and wasabi were brought to the table. What would have been an okay portion for one person was intended for our party of four. Our pot of green tea was not refilled with hot water, even I pushed the teapot to the edge of the table with the lid off, which is the universal sign for "more hot water please!" at any Asian restaurant. First time it happened, it's kinda understandable, but twice? Really? Then the wait for the sushi. All four in our party ordered rolls. None of them were particularly time consuming or unusual. The first two rolls came out. It took another 5 minutes for another roll to come out. Then 5 minutes go by. Then 10 minutes. Mind you, this is a not so busy night...only 3 or 4 other tables are occupied. I am looking at the waitress with a WTF look on my face. I finally flag her down and ask WTF. She apologizes and says it's almost ready. Finally after another 5 to 7 minutes, the last roll arrives. So from the time the first rolls were served, it was almost 15 minutes for the last one to be served. It was clear that we were all eating our own rolls (i.e. not family style). When she finally brings the last dish, she just puts it down with no apology or explanation. I even looked at her and not a word from her mouth. OWNER -- if you're reading this, may I suggest you talk to your wait staff? If timing is off in the kitchen, have your wait staff be proactive and apologize/explain up front. If the wait stretches abnormally long, bring over a bowl of edamame, sunomono, anything as a gesture. When the dish is finally served, apologize again or thank the customer for their patience. Ignoring the situation just makes people pissed. Would I eat here again? Yes. Would I eat here again if the service was as bad as my first visit. Hell no. read more

After eating here many times, the Sushi Spot has let me down. On Sept 30 I met 3 of my good friends here for an early dinner. As usual there was a slight wait, but it was much shorter than predicted. We ordered appetizers, rolls, and salads. I ordered my usual Tuna Nigiri and a Klamath Roll. Nigiri came out and was great. Half way through my Klamath Roll I found 2 thick dark hairs under the roll. Needless to say this ruined any appetite I had as well as those I was with. When the waitress finally came back over to see how we were doing I showed her my plate and she said "ewww, I am sorry, would you like me to bring you another one?" I declined and as we were all now pretty much done at this point with eating anything. We waited another 10 minutes for the check. My roll was not on the bill, and a simple little sad face with the words I am sorry were on it. Nothing more was said. Two of the ladies I was with, couldn't believe that they handled this in such a casual manner. It was obvious by the amount of food that was left, that these little strands of hair caused more than one of us to lose their appetites. As we left they brought it up to the hostess and her comment was what more do you want? The manager removed the roll from the bill. It was said in a somewhat hostile manner and it was obvious they did not really care. Too bad, had they been a bit more sincere with their apology I might be back... If this is the type of customer service and quality control that is becoming the Sushi Spot, like many other establishments in our little community they will be " Hair today, gone tomorrow" read more

I have very good memories of this place when I was leaving in Humbodlt county. Here I am, yelping from memory - one day I will return and eat at Sushi Spot. Not even going to lie, it's the best sushi places in Eureka, CA. Look around you, do you see any other sushi spots? Nope. I have to say with my hands down: 5 stars. Looking from the outside, there are hippies hanging out on the side of the street nearby the restaurant. The place is small, let me repeat quietly and gently - small. And loudly - very crowded and noisy. SERVICE: A very hip environment and laid back - servers are super duper nice and if you ask for recommendations- they will definitely recommend the best and what most customers order. The ENVIRONMENT goes hand-in-hand with the servers. The place is rather cool with hyped up colors that awakes you. Sushi Spot's Menu is the best menu ever! Even though moving away to San Francisco, I have never again stumble upon such a awesome menu with pictures of the rolls, sashimi, and etc.. So, you know what you're getting. FOOD: I'm day dreaming right of the sushi and I can still remember it - delicious! I'm not lying right now - everything on the menu is 5 stars and beyond! The food is still good, but i just had a poor experience with the waitress'. My girlfriend and I were there at the end of the night. We were at the sushi bar and our waitress plain ignored us. She took our orders, then the next time we saw her was WHEN WE WERE WRITING HER TIP DOWN. We were waiting for our food to come (which came quite fast, thank you Sushi chefs), and I was thirst as hell so i drank my water and my girl friends' when she leaves for the restroom. My girlfriend comes back and were sitting there, LOOKING at her, like "umm u should check on us because WERE LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU AS YOU SIP YOUR TEA IN THE BACK" Then we calmly stack our glasses closer to her so it's not even a question as to what we want. AND NOTHING. After about 2 minutes of her just chilling in the back, I bother another server to get us some water. 30 Minutes later and we still haven't seen our server. Well we've seen her, she's just chilling in the back EATING. Anyways we finish our meal. I get up and start walking to the door to leave, and our server is chatting with one of the chefs. My girlfriend waits on her chair like, oh maybe she just needs some time. NO she's just lazy. We walk over to the server that helped us with the water before, and She Rung us up. Then OUR server came over, muttered some appology, and stood THERE OVER US waiting her me to write the tip, trying to guilt me into tipping her. I tiped her 13%. I was pissed. I am still pissed.
