Sushi spot is always crowded. People waiting outside for twenty minutes to be called to go inside this restaurant where servers are coming and going, nearly crashing into you in a hurried pace. Mediocre sushi. Not too many vegan options, but you can substitute their tempura (has egg) for just the same veg steamed. I've eaten here a few times in the past two years. Each time I've enjoyed it, but today was especially exceptionally deliciously delightful! My friend and I sat at the sushi bar where Dan (not Japanese) set us up royally with his artistic, palate-popping creations. The server was also adorable and attentive to our needs and scooted around the dining room with grace and purity... I believe she enjoys working here and I'd come back to Sushi Spot just to see her sweet smile again. Fresh Uni on Mondays and Thursdays.... Good rolls, nice cuts of fish, small intimate yet loud, fun little spot to eat. Be ready to wait on a busy night, this place gets slammed. Put your name down and give them your number and go get a drink. They will call you when your table is ready. I like to call ahead so I can get a gauge on how long the wait will be. My recommendations are: Kani crunch, Trinidad, Vegas Roll, Hamachi sashimi, Hamachi shooters if they have them, and of course the Uni. It's always nice having them in their own category on the menu so they are easy to locate for non fish eaters. This review is for Sushi Spot's vegetarian items only. I've been here a few times and have yet to review! Sushi Spot usually has a waiting time of 20 minutes or more, but my most recent trip, my friend and I were able to get a table right away (granted it was a Tuesday evening). We were seated right away by our waiter Teddy who was an excellent waiter as well as conversationalist. He made us feel very comfortable without being overbearing or intrusive. My friend and I got a pot of tea to start off with. It lasted the whole dining experience, and they offer it on the house. It's really cool that they brew the tea loose leaf, which you can watch steep if you take the lid off the pot. I got the vegetarian Miso Soup as an appetizer, which was perfect. Just the right amount of soup to warm my belly. I ordered the Tempura Yam roll and my friend got the Kani Crunch. They must have sliced the individual roll pieces in half because I have never received such a large roll before! I really enjoyed how big it was because it allowed me to enjoy every bite without having to focus on chewing with my full mouth. The yam was very crunchy, not soggy, and the veggies tasted fresh. I loved my roll and ate the whole thing. It was well worth the $5.95 price. My friend's Kani Crunch roll was HUGE as well. It looked very decadent, covered with a creamy sauce and fish eggs. She said it was delicious. I don't know if the $13 price for one roll was really worth it, though, but that is just my opinion. For dessert, we ordered the Red Bean Mochi. It came out on tiny plates with tiny forks and one piece of mochi on each. I was surprised there was only one piece per person, but I did enjoy how quaint the presentation was. Started with grilled oysters and then house special rolls "iron lion, summer in the city" then house favorite rolls " plaza roll and spicy tuna." My favorite was the iron lion. So, I'll start by saying I sat for 30 minutes before anyone took my order. Didn't have my phone out or my menu open (the usual things waiters look for in someone who's still looking) still no service for half an hour... Having heard good reviews I was ok with the wait if the sushi was phenomenal. My fiancé and I got 3 rolls in total which took 15 minutes to get to us even though they were fairly quick and easy rolls to make and the raw fish I expected to be cold was room temperature... More than a little worrisome... When I asked what was up they said it was training day, even though it was Friday afternoon. Poor business thinking on their part. Thoroughly unimpressed. This restaurant has delicious food, normally good wait staff, and is clean! It is now open for lunch on weekends, which is a welcome change. Open lunch through dinner on weekdays (very convenient hours during the week). The food, vegetables and fish are fresh. Nice menu selections with daily specials. This is not a large restaurant, so there can be a wait. They do not currently take reservations. We go early on the weekend or off-hours during the week to get quicker seating. Looking forward to their second location in McKinleyville. Upgraded review Dec 2013: Changing four stars to three. I still go here quite often and still like the food, but not as happy as before. Main reason: Cleanliness, odor and sometimes inconsistent service. It seems they clean the tables haphazardly and with sour smelling rags. This has happened several times now and I am worried about the overall cleanliness. Arcata locale changed hours and is not currently open for lunch on weekends. First, let me start by saying that this is a good place to take someone to introduce them to sushi, especially if they're skeptical or nervous to try it. They have a lot of rolls that are mild in flavor and not "too crazy" but also have plenty that are full of flavor and out of this world. If they don't like fish, they likely will after eating here (and yes there are some non-fish choices on the menu) This is one of my favorite sushi places, mainly because of their smoked albacore. They have the absolute best smoked albacore I've ever eaten and they're cheaper than any of the other sushi places around. I'll be moving out of state soon and this will be the one restaurant I miss most. Also, I've never had a problem with the staff and I eat there very often, both Arcata and McKinleyville. Arcata spit- not so far in McKinleyville ! So inconsistent! Always come with friends and order the same 5 or so rolls and the first few times were so good but unfortunately it's never been the same. The rice increases, the fish and cream cheese inside decreases and the sauces on top sometimes are a mere drizzle. You shouldn't have to order a side of sauce on the side and be charged for it. Just put the correct amount on the roll like you used to! Add all that up and it makes for flavor lacking- dry sushi! If you're spending 13 dollars on one roll I wouldn't expect that to be happening. We aren't ordering the California roll or a simple cheap roll. We get the honey crunch, crunchy salmon,Klamath, summer in the city-things like that. Delicious! I had the seaweed salad, miso soup, pork gyoza, Unagi Crunch roll, and the Easy Street roll. Everything was really good and tasted so fresh! The Easy Street roll was something I've never had anywhere else before.. it had Unagi, deep fried yam, and I think avocado if I remember correctly and it was absolutely phenomenal! And the price was REALLY cheap too, at least compared to what I am used to paying for sushi down in the Bay! I will definitely be going back here for my future sushi cravings. :] read more

Boy I was really expecting better here. I travel for work and was in Arcata for the night so I decided to try out one of the 3 sushi joints I found on Yelp. All 3 had similar reviews so I asked the front clerk at my hotel which one to go to and he said that Sushi Spot was the place to go. Evidently it was because there was a 20 min wait when I got there (always a good sign). Now let me explain my 2 stars. The restaurant is a very nice restaurant. Looks fairly new and is very clean (although I did not check the bathroom). The server was wonderful and was always filling my water glass the moment it was getting a little low. The sushi chefs were nice guys and always smiling. However, when it came to the taste of the food I was quite disappointed with the end result. The presentation was good but the taste was just not appetizing at all. I ordered the Rainbow Roll and some Nigiri Salmon (both my "go to" orders when the local rolls dont look tasty to me) and unfortunately I would not order either one of these items of sushi again. ADDICTIVE! There's something about this sushi that gets me crazy -- it's wrapped perfectly, is rolled in little spicey and crunchy and fried things, and has fresh and juicy fillings. OMG. Ever since they opened, my favorite roll has been the Klamath Roll. It's nothing fancy just some salmon katsu with avocado covered by spicy mayo but it is a classic. I was excited to see that they expanded a few months ago into what used to be the pizza place next door. It was amazing not having to wait for an hour to get a table anymore. The same friendly staff have been added to along with a bar area including a screen to watch football. They do need to add more sushi rolling staff if they want to keep up with the increased sushi orders though. I hope they will get on this soon. read more

Great food, long wait. Dined in once, couldn't tell if the food was good or if I was just very hungry due to the long wait. I called in my order the next two times. I was told 40 minutes, so I wait an hour before driving there. Still had to wait another 30 minutes the last time. It's good sushi. I don't mind a 60+ minute wait, just tell me it's going to be that long so I don't have to sit and hear the arguments between staff members. Always love the sushi here. You can get a great date night dinner for under $30 (without drinks). The first time came here my boyfriend and I sat at the sushi bar. We got our rolls but it took a little longer than we had expected, about 15 mins and the restaurant wasn't nearly full. The two times I've gotten take out from here, the service has been meh to say the least. I was told on the phone it would be about twenty minutes, both times, and I always arrive about 5 mins before they say it should be ready and I always end up waiting an extra ten minutes. This place gets 5 stars in my book! I went here for a friend's birthday with he and my boyfriend a couple weeks back. The wait was pretty long without a reservation, we had to go down the street for a drink to wait because even the bar was packed! After we were finally seated, however, I saw why this place was so popular. We ordered three rolls to share, between the 3 of us, as well as some individual tasting-size portions of some of the menu items. The ones I remember specifically were the Trinidad roll and the unagi sampling sized portions. We also ordered a bottle of sake to go with our meal. Everything was delicious! The Trinidad roll had smoked albacore, avocado, shrimp, and Larrupin sauced drizzled over it. The unagi rolls were wrapped around sushi rice, with tobiko caviar mixed in as well. Service was excellent. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and friendly, recommended our sake to us, and brought our food out very quickly. Sushi Spot is the best sushi in Arcata. But don't get excited, that's not saying much. Problems: 1. If you phone in an order, they bump your order as needed for in house orders, so don't expect to have it ready even if you wait longer than the time they quote you. Once you get there, they scramble to finish it, so you will be waiting more time, and anything hot will have got cold, and worse, your nori on some rolls may be gummy and softened because they may have made one roll 40 minutes ago, and the other rolls as you wait now. 2. If you eat there and order sushi plus a kitchen item, like a katsu for example, you will almost always get your sushi first, finish it, wait, be ready to pay the bill and go, and then the katsu shows up. This really sucks when one person in your party didn't get sushi and everyone did, because they have to wait and wait and eat quick while everyone else is ready to go. Common issue. If the line is big, we go to Tomo, even though it is not as good. I think the problem seems to be that they are always one person under staffed, or that the manager is disorganized. The hostess says no, because they "don't do that," but they accommodated us (it was already 9pm) and pushed the tables together, after I voiced how ridiculous the policy was. We did get some warm tea while we waited, which was nice. The saving grace for this place was the price and the quality of fish and the rolls. It may be my desperation for some sort of sushi to satiate my appetite, but I have yet to find better sushi in Humboldt. When I finally got the rolls home I opened them up to find at $4 a piece their avocado rolls in fact contain BARELY ANY AVOCADO.
