Date night with the husband on a Saturday night live. My cocktail was amazing but food was disappointing. I had the $30.00 for 12 small smoked salmon ravioli; half had nothing in it and the other half had a thin layer of cheese but not even a hint of smoked salmon and the lemon sauce was more like lemon water. It was gross and It didn't come with bread or small salad. I will not be back. read more

I ordered Fruta De Mare. This is suppose to be 'fruit of the sea'. The sauce was tasty but the only seafood was some small cubes of rockfish (the size of 2 pencil erasers), 4 small prawns and a 1/4 cup of very, very tiny cocktail shrimp. I did get over a pound of pasta, enough for 4 people. In fact I took most of it home and it made 2 more meals. I was looking forward to clams and squid/mussels possibly crab, given the price. This was shrimp pasta with about 7 small pieces of rockfish . Just not worth the price IMO. I like the taste of their food but the portions are way off. Our guest ordered smoke salmon ravioli and he literally got 7 raviolis. He was the biggest guy in the group. His date shared her food instead of complaining. It was served in a huge pasta bowl and didn't fill 1/8 of it. They have some work to do with their menu and portion sizes. read more

The Hubbs was drawn here by the pictures in the reviews. He does better when he can see the presentation when he is trying something new. However their menu changes so the items he was looking forward to were not available. We settled on the artichoke heat fritters, which were very good. A little challenging to eat with a fork. I had the brisket ravioli which was delicious. The Hubbs had spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs were hearty and well seasoned. Service was very good. We loved the historic charm and beautful wall mural. Although there is limited seating at ground level near the bar, the better seating is on the second level. read more

We are local - and we dine out a lot. We would NEVER write a bad review about a restaurant. That is not cool. Having good food is important of course, but dining out needs to be a pleasant experience beyond the food. We are big on prompt & confident service, ambiance, etc. Make us sit and wait too long to be asked if we want a cocktail (we do)...we won't be your friend anymore... That is rule #1 - Take our drink order immediately, and bring them in a reasonable amount of time. A fail here and we don't even care if the food is good. If we don't like a place, we simply don't go back. Pamper us, and you will make a lot of money off us. Let me tell ya - after trying all the Eureka restaurants multiple times, Garbiel's is a place we find ourselves coming back to time & time again. We were visiting from Sacramento and family recommended this delightful establishment. The Marche salad was super delicious, well-prepared for each member of our dining party, and at the perfect temperature. My husband had the brisket ravioli and I highly recommend this as it was perfection. I wish I'd ordered it but used their delicious bread to soak up his remaining sauce for myself! I had the amazing soul d'jour which was a rich creamy potato soup with thinly shaved delicious beef. (I forgot the name in Italian!) our aunt had the amazing chicken mushroom Alfredo - so good! As a birthday gift, we were given a dinner at Gabriel's. it is a cute little place in Old Town Eureka. A bit hard to find as there is no signage. After we got in, we saw several others outside as perplexed as we were walking around. However, we ere cheerfully greeted and had a great table reserved for us. Our waiter did a great job throughout the meal. We chose strangolapretti as an appetizer mostly because I'd never heard of it. It's a spinach dumpling with sausage. The basil cream sauce was beautiful but the dumplings were dense. Not sure what they should taste like but I wouldn't get them again. For dinner, I chose filet minion with Gnocchi. I'd been told the gnocchi was amazing. In my opinion, the filet was tender, juicy and perfectly cooked but the gnocchi needed work. My husband got the New York Strip with mashed potatoes. His mash was amazing but the steak was overcooked. Both dishes came with seasonal veg which wee great. So, dinner was a little mixed but the dessert saved the day. We had tiramisu which was everything it should be. Gabriel's is known for making everything from scratch including the lady fingers in the dessert. The marscapone was creamy and delicious beautifully soaked with rum. I'd go back for that!! My picture taking was a bit better this time, but no dessert picture. All in all, we were glad to have tried it. 4 out of 5 and I wouldn't go back. read more

I have had Gabriel's on my radar for a while now, and the opportunity to dine here the other night finally made itself available. There are several Italian food restuarants in our community and this is one of the best. A small unassuming eatery that is deceptive as to its actual size and capacity until you walk indoors. We had reservations for 6:30 on a Friday evening and they are highly recommended on the weekends as this place is very popular. We were greeted and seated literally as we walked in because we had reservations, otherwise a waitlist was already going and the place was seriously packed. A concise menu that covers all the bases of traditional Italian faire, and an exceptional offering of small plates that are all quite diverse and my samplings were all unique and flavorful. There is a full bar here and an extensive wine menu, along with several options for beers though none on tap. My wife ordered a craft cocktail and myself a bottle IPA from Steelhead. The place was seriously packed, mutliple large tables going upstairs and downstairs was literally standing room only at the bar. This did effect the flow of service some, as it did lag a bit but with the crowd and for our area it was to be expected. Probably much different service flow on a not packed house Friday night. We plan to return on a midweek just to see. After about 25 minutes plus, our food finally appeared and it was beautifully executed and worth the little extra wait. Fresh, flavorful and a great combination of textures, profiles and overlapping components made each dish, four in all, very good. The sushi grade Ahi was melt in your mouth delicious and was the Garlic Red Pepper prawns (though prawns maybe a stress more like jumbo shrimp) was quite tasty with just a bit of heat to it and loaded with nine succulent shrimp in my serving. The garlic pepper sauce was very good. The mushroom stack with shitakes, butternut squash and gorgonzola was devine as well, and if you like mushrooms this is a sure bet. Fresh hand made pastas as well with most all of your standard options are available. Also options of steaks, veal, chicken and fresh seafoods. All in all a good meal, about an hour and forty minutes total dining time and dinner for two with drinks for under a hundred bucks with an 18% gratutity included. 4 Stars - a good place for a nice meal, but expect it to move a bit slow if its busy. First timers, here are our impressions. Saturday night, busy place, we had reservations, those that didn't had a wait time. Our host was also our waiter and busboy. He had the entire downstairs to take care of. He was very good, left him a nice tip. Seated by the door on a cold night, I don't recommend. Bread and balsamic on table was good, hot tea and coffee helped warm us up. Small plates were the Strangolepetri (sp), their spinach and chicken sausage dumplings in nutmeg sauce, very dense and creamy. The sausage was good. No garnish (?) and the garlic and red pepper prawns. The shrimp were small and overcooked, the tomato garlic sauce was flavorful. Entrees were the smoked salmon ravioli which was delicious and the fettuccine with seafood (cod, shrimp, clams and mushrooms) again the shrimp was overcooked, the cod was nice, this dish was okay. Not super impressed, but service was good and portions were correct. We will be back. Maybe try the brisket ravioli and a steak next time...the fresh pasta was very nice. I gave this place another chance after an initial horrible experience. This visit was much improved and they were very accommodating for a rather late valentines reservation. The waiter was friendly and the food was very good. My only criticism would be that my meal was very small for a 30 dollar pasta dish and I still left hungry after bread, appetizers, and entree. I will come definitely come back though and maybe the kitchen was low because it was Valentine's Day. read more

We just had the most amazing dining experience at Gabriel's. We came with a group of 15 without reservations at 5:30pm. I think we shocked them when they asked, "Really?? 15?!?!" Ended up only being 8...oops! It wasn't too busy and they were able to put tables together for us upstairs. There was still plenty of room for other patrons around us. The service was friendly and prompt. We never had to wait for any special request we made. The majority of the group was Deaf and everyone was using ASL, but that didn't scare the waiter away. In fact, he seemed excited and learned new ways to interact, take orders and ask clarifying questions. The food was delicious and hot. Dietary restrictions (ie Gluten-free) were addressed and modified when able. Freshly made in-house pasta...I could eat this everyday! A fabulous night out with friends and amazing food. Wow... what a let down. This place had decent enough reviews and we really wanted Italian food after a day of visiting the Red Woods. To start with, this review is mainly about the environment because the food was quite good considering. The bruschetta was good and the pepper shrimp appetizers were good, especially the shrimp. I had the chicken parmigiana and it was a bit burnt on the bottom but overall good, I enjoyed it none the less and the accompanying pasta and asparagus were good. My husband ordered the chicken penne pesto and he also enjoyed it but complained about the lack of the chicken since he had about 5 bits. Now onto the crappy service. When we arrived at our table our waiter came over and gave off a attitude of "why are you here"? I was torn on 3 different items and when questioned on which were better, he cut me off then switched to my husband. I just ordered the chicken parmigiana and enjoyed it. Our drink cups sat empty and he never asked if we wanted more tea or lemonade. We also had an obnoxious family that were seated right next to us who bragged and bolstered about money and cheating their customers when it seemed evident they weren't use to money at all. All in all, the food was good but the environment and surroundings made me uncomfortable and we are quickly so we could just leave. We declined all other services and left, wouldn't recommend. I don't know why exactly we were treated like we didn't belong but I have my own opinion on the matter. We live and traveled up from San Francisco and have been to fine dining establishments where we were dressed like utter bums and yet we were treated better than this place. Also had to add, the waiter didn't have basic decency... I said "thank you every time" when something arrived and he said nothing each time. Sad the service was so terrible because I typically tip 50% if not 100% for stellar service. read more

This was my first time here. WOW super delicious!!! My boyfriend and I are vegetarian and I wanted a pasta with vegetables and a pink sauce and it wasn't on the menu but the chef made it for me. The food was pretty amazing I got the salmon ravioli's with capers and they were delicious. The capers were a little intese though. I wanted to like this place, it just wasn't good. Salad was from a container & not picked through containing some brown pieces. The olive oil & vinegar for the bread was off, mostly vinegar. Tomatoes were raw & cold placed on top of the gnocchi, they should have been roasted or warmed some. The quality for the price is just not there. read more

Last week at Gabriel's, in Eureka California, I had a very poor dining experience. I don't normally follow through with making these reviews, but this experience has particularly stuck with me, and I really hope that it helps the owners and managers of this restaurant, & anyone looking for more than mediocre dining in Old Town. Upon entering, I noticed that even before getting inside the door of the entryway one of the potted evergreens was completely dead and had been for some time. We had an early reservation, and were the only ones seated in the downs stairs area. There was only one group upstairs and it was pretty quiet & not busy. We were seated in the window and our glasses already had water in them, and sliced cold, bread was sitting out exposed in it's basket. My glass of water had already sweated through, and the ice was mostly melted. Our server was young and friendly. He asked us what drinks we would like but hadn't given us the wine list or drink specials yet. We ordered the only salad they offered on the menu, it was a handful of spring mix that had not been picked through, had quite a few slimy and withered bits I had to push a side, a couple garbanzos, and Craisins sprinkled on top and a drizzle of dressing, and some crumbled blue cheese. Very basic. We ordered our meals pretty quickly and had to wait an extremely long time for them to arrive considering there were very few people that had come in after us. I watched the server, check his phone many times while working. When our meals arrived, they looked pretty good, we ordered chicken and polenta with braised greens and salmon ravioli. The ravioli was delicate and had good flavor, the lemon butter sauce was very basic and the pickled red onion garnish was way too thick and dense to truly balance out this meal. Could have used some capers or parsley to find balance. The inbone thigh meat for the chicken dish was over done, and thank goodness they gave us two pieces because they were very small. The polenta was extremely bland. I rarely salt my food, and I had to salt it twice. The onions and braised greens had a good flavor, but it was maybe two or three pieces of spinach, barely anything to talk about. During our long wait to receive our entrées, a housing, insecure individual with his big contractor bag slung over his shoulder, came in, set his bag underneath the stairs and used the facilities upstairs. I'm a compassionate person, and I don't want anyone to not get their needs met when they need to, and yet, I am a paying customer and I'm not sure why the owners and managers are allowing this activity, while patrons are dining. Not to be overly picky, but the carpet was in dire need of a deep cleaning. Also, to end on a good note, they have an extensive wine, liquor, beverage list. We did not order anything from it, but it looked impressive on paper. read more

My aunt and I went to Gabriel's last week for dinner. Gabriel's, known for its impeccable Italian food, 'signature' cocktails, great Old Town location and old-world-Italian-family-owned vibes. I'd been to Gabriel's before and found the food delicious and the waitstaff friendly. This last experience still has me reeling in open mouth shock and horror. Our experience was going well, yet unremarkable as far as dinners out go, until our entrees were brought, and a family member/owner/waiter named Maish (sp?) came to our table to visit and check on the meal. He sat down at our table with a glass of wine: Polite chit chat about the family-owned business (fourteen siblings, he told us!) turned into questions about my personal relationship status, child rearing and child bearing, and within 60 seconds, turned into a one-sided diatribe from this proprietor about an "upper echelon" and "lower echelon" of people in the world... and only the low class are breeding. He started raising his voice, becoming impassioned speaking of "co** sucking, fa**ot, goat fu**ers draining resources and breeding out intelligence." His rant left me speechless, with trembling knees, and as he read the shock on my face, he pushed his chair back. "I can't condone anything you just said. I'm blown away." I said in a calm, polite tone. He stood up, announced that I needed water, and left. Another employee took my almost untouched dinner away, and we were brought the bill-a full bill-and the waiter hovered over our table while my aunt nervously paid. Maish brought water back, filled my glass and whispered close to my ear, "You probably shouldn't come back here." "No problem," I said, as we stood and silently left, shocked and shaking, with my half full cocktail on the table. Halfway home I was dizzy--After a lot of water and a half drink. I spent the following two days dehydrated, with a headache, nausea, ended up with an IV. What was in that water, Maish? I won't support an establishment gushing hate and bigotry at the helm. read more

First of all this restaurant is romantic, relaxing private restaurant. Greeted by friendly and sweet staff. Escorted to second floor via a wide woodened stairway with a two story mural of a seascape on your right as you go up. We visited on a weeknight. As we went up the stairs we heard a beautiful guitar music filling the air with european ambiance being strummed by a young Argentine gentleman. We had the mushroom stack for appetizer which was amazingly deliscous. Then a Marché salad has finely chopped strawberries, walnuts and real blue cheese bits on a field of young mixed greens. The salad tasty, refreshing with just the right amount of dressing. Cleaned our palate to prepare for main course of seafood fettucini. The portion was very generous easily split. The fetuccini was made with homemade pasta, thin and soft and melted in your mouth, had tons of seafood, mushrooms, in a lemon wine sauce. The sauce is thin and not overwhelming like what other places serve. The Tiramiso is served cold but is delightful with a creamy custard moderatly drenched ia liquer,, ntopped with a chocolate espresso. All this with a bottle of Rombauer! read more

I'd like to recommend this restaurant to you, but I really can't. I was seriously disappointed in this place, and it was all very avoidable on their part. To begin with, the service was pitiful at the outset. It was unclear who was the host, the wait staff, or the busser. Our orders were not taken promptly, we had to ask for bread (when that came out it was cold and doughy), and then we were seemingly ignored until we mentioned the situation to the bar staff. The service picked up from that point, but it was a really terrible way to impress your business on a patron with front of house staff like that. It was clear that things were mismanaged, and I hope they can resolve the issue. The food itself was OK. The oysters we had grilled and were not worth the money. The cocktail list was fun, so there's that. Good selection of wine. The smoked salmon raviolis were tasty, and the three-meat meatloaf (pelpettone?) I liked. So, I have no big complaints about the cuisine, other than the oysters were overpriced for what we got. The layout is interesting. Big space, with an upstairs and outdoor seating. During the day, or maybe during the summer that's probably a good place to hang out. Honestly, though, unless their service picks up I would just skip this place. There are other Italian food restaurants in Eureka that do the same or better for the same price. Nothing to see here. read more
