We are long-time fans of the plaza grill. We've been going there since the '90s. And we really appreciate everything that was done during the pandemic for our community by the plaza grill folks.. So we're super excited to have folks from the old plaza grill trying to make a new experience in the Jacoby storehouse. So in that vein, here are a few suggestions for improving our experience. In our party we had a number of folks that are eating with particular dietary restrictions. The current paper menu that's handed to you doesn't provide any information about how to eat food that's either gluten-free or dairy-free or vegan etc. When we went to make our order online, it was super cool to be able to order some things without cheese, without croutons or without bacon etc. We would very much have appreciated an opportunity to write a note to say that particular dishes needed to be free of particular allergens. Also, in the salads, there wasn't an option to ask for dressing on the side or dressing without dairy etc. A simple oil and vinegar option would have been nice. The side salad option doesn't provide an opportunity to say without croutons either. We found the food tasty. The soup was a little salty, but super tasty. The portions for the meat dishes were large. People left with to go boxes. We really like the plaza grill and we love the Jacoby storehouse. The servers were friendly and helpful. However they did not inspire confidence around Celiac friendly food. When asked if they had gluten-free options they responded yes and then started discussing vegan options which did not convey knowledge about the need of food to be gluten-free. We hope your new approach is successful! Hope these ideas for improvement are helpful. read more

I'm newer to the area so trying this place for the first time tonight. What a treat! We arrived early for dinner and found they have a happy hour with great bites and drink prices. (Tues-Sat 5/6 pm) Because I have a small appetite, we didn't partake in the appetizers, but will plan to come sometime soon just for the happy hour menu. I had the BBQ brisket dinner, which was tender and flavorful, and served with tasty seasonal vegetables and great whipped potatoes. My husband had meatloaf which came with the same sides as well as gravy. Portions for both were very generous - easily two meals for my husband and likely 3 for me. Dessert was tempting as I'm a sucker for crème brûlée and I heard the chocolate torte is good as well. No room for it this time, maybe on my next happy hour visit. Brussels sprouts soggy. Cottage pie was way over seasoned. Burger was decent but fries were limp. We were exceedingly polite and friendly and gave constructive feedback. We were refunded on the sprouts but when we gave polite feedback about the entrees, the wait staff replied that no one else had complained and slinked away, never to return. There did not seem to be any one overseeing the food or waitstaff. We have been coming to Plaza Grill for over thirty years and they have always been solid. The food last night was edible but not good. I'm giving them a low rating mostly due to the attitude of the waitstaff. Acknowledge constructive criticism politely with at least a sincere apology or offer to give feedback to the chef. The chef might also want to be checking what he's sending out of the kitchen. We know you can do better. It's a beautiful building with great atmosphere and decent food generally speaking, so hopefully they are just working the kinks out since they recently reopened. read more

Had a horrible dinning (wouldn't even call it dinning) experience. You order and pay beforehand at the counter for food and if you want something to drink, besides water, you have to order and pay at the bar. And why pay when ordering? What if I want to add deserts and coffee? I would have to pay again. Unacceptable! read more

Came here on a work trip during Halloween. The atmosphere and service was great. The staff was all dressed up in costumes which made the kids their excited. There was a lot of meals on the menu that caught my eye so I ordered some appetizers. I ordered some awesome Fried Calamari, and Mac and cheese. Our group shared a great tasting chocolate cake. The food is a little bit on the pricing for my liking but I would come back for the food I ordered. read more

Service was fantastic! The cocktails tasted a bit watered down for our tastes. My husband got the Cajun pasta with nothing else since there wasn't an plant-based option. We wish we saw more vegetarian options, especially on the protein side. Not every vegetarian wants to eat a beyond burger. I ended up getting the Brie raspberry apple slaw with the beyond burger. It was quite flavorful. The ambiance felt a bit dated but has potential to be a cool spot especially since the location is on the top floor of a big building in the Arcata Plaza. read more

Old times feel to the place. Burgers are robust. Simple menu done uniquely well. I definitely recommend trying it if you're in Arcata. They also have decent vegetarian options. We had an absolutely fantastic dinner at Plaza Grill! My husband ordered the Coconut Risotto with Mahi, and I had the Grilled Halibut--both dishes were perfectly cooked and full of flavor. We also shared the Beet Salad with Cypress Grove Goat Cheese, Spiced Nuts, and Granny Smith Apples, which was super fresh and delicious! The Scallop Appetizer was another standout, and both the Havana and Mojito cocktails were incredibly tasty. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made the experience wonderful. Love Plaza Grill and always run into old friends. Tonight, I ran into two old friends, which made the evening extra special. The awesome and original Wallace & Hinz Bar is the classic. Wedding Anniversary weekend get away. Decided to try Plaza for dinner. Ambiance was nice. Loved the remodel of an old building with period decore. Food service was excellent. My husband ordered a basic margarita with mid level blanco tequila and I ordered an old fashion Knob Creek liquor. Both were very unbalanced each time they were served (we ordered two each) and neither tastes consistent with the previous. Management might want to consider training as both cocktails are basic bartending 101 and considering the price of each it's absolutely expected a necessary. My meal was good but a little heavy on the sauce (not necessarily needed for scallops) in my opinion. My husband ordered Brisket BBQ. Unfortunately it was extremely dry even with the layer of BBQ sauce. Was really disappointed in the overall food experience. Could be the small kitchen and large dining area lends itself to a lot of precooked prep then quick warm up when ordered, which doesn't work well to most meats. Just my opinion but if you go don't expect the food to measure up to the service and ambience. read more

Fun place!!! We arrived early as I had a five year old and I wanted to beat the rush. We were probably the second table seated. Our waitress was having an off day, but food was good. We ordered a shepherds pie and a beet salad with chicken and sweet potato fries. The beet salad wasn't quite what I was expecting. In my mind, a beet salad would be heavy on the beets and less greens. This was mostly greens with about five thin slices of beets. The waitress mistakenly didn't hear me ask for chicken on the salad so I had to wait for the protein. By the time it came I just had it boxed up. Also my grandson wanted sweet-potato fries and they came out after all the food 5 min-10 min later. Again food tasted great everyone was very friendly and always smiled. I'm a sucker for historical locations. The Jacoby's Storehouse building does not disappoint. If you go when the shops are closed you can still walk through and enjoy the beautiful interior of the building. Plaza Grill has a beautiful bar and a comfortable dining area with plenty of space between tables. It was clean and inviting. We waited no longer than a minute for the hostess and between that time had two servers greet us and let us know someone would be with us shortly, Our table was nice and we had water and bread with a beverage order in a few minutes. The drinks and calamari were an excellent start to dinner. I ordered the Halibut, my husband had a steak (it was massive), and our daughter had the kids chicken meal. Everything was DELICIOUS!!!!! The kids meal was honestly like a regular meal. The ingredients were fresh. The dessert was decadent and I'm dreaming of that chocolate cake right now. Our server was great! I have been coming here for a good 8 years now. The place has been in a slow decline, and now it has finally hit rock bottom. Even the coloring crayons for kids are spent. My wife and I both ordered salads and they had more blue cheese on them than lettuce. What happened? I use to love this place. Service was great and always has been. We were in town for a day and night. After our meetings, this was the place we decided to go. I had my guests from Thailand with me. We arrived, with no reservation and they quickly sat us. Friendly staff to begin with. Waters were given to all six of us. Three out of those waters had lipstick marks on the glass and had a bug inside. They were quick to replace them. That lake tells me, employees are not checking before serving. We provided bread, the bread tasted old! It came with butter and oil and balsamic. However, how are we suppose to spread the butter without silverware? The place itself has an older ambiance. The rug smells like old mess halls. Food looked delicious on the menu. A few ordered dinner, I myself ordered wings and Brussels sprouts. Brussels sprouts were drowning in Balsamic Vinaigrette. The wings lacked flavor and so did the Buffalo sauce. I'm half I didn't order any of the $45 and up plates. The cool thing, they accommodated our requests because we had vegans and people that doesn't eat pork. One of my guest from Thailand, who ordered Scallops, found HAIR in her food!!! Disgusting! My guests from Thailand owns Hotels and Restaurants. This was embarrassing. I understand things happen, but no! There are proper ways in being the kitchen! That ruined it for us. Our server was the manager -- she was cool. She tried her best. Unfortunately our last visit to this restaurant was the worst experience ever. We wanted to splurge and order a ribeye steak with grilled mushrooms cooked medium with a twice baked potato and green beans. When our food arrived and placed on table by someone else beside our waitress, she quickly left. I tried my Potato and it was cold. Then moved onto the steak. Under cooked and full of stringy fibers non chewable fat, gristle. We waited for our waitress to return and it took some time so our dish was un edible. She did offer a different steak but to much time had passed and we were done. If we couldn't eat our meal in the first place for various reasons, it should have come off the bill. Nope only 20% on a meal that went in the trash. You have lost our business for good. I hope you read this so the next time something happens like this you will do better on giving a full refund on a meal that had two bits out of it.. read more

We keep making the mistake of returning here. Yet each meal we leave sorely disappointed. Tonight's experience i will rate only on the food, as covid times are tough and make each dining experience difficult. My well done burger was nearly inedible, but i was so hungry after waiting an hour i are it. It was burnt badly, black on both sides. My partners meal of alfredo had little sauce and tasted microwaved and insta noodles from a box. Were committing to never return. They're food stinks and their menu is horrible. Wow..what a pleasant surprise is all I can say. I haven't been to the plaza grill in years, and I'm quick to write a place off, but I have actually been missing out. It was a Thursday, sunset, during dinner service. And everything just went right. Starting with our server, who's name was Dani. She was in hustle mode as it was the rush, but she took the time to get down to our level for a sec and actually discuss her opinions on the days offerings, as we had inquired. Deciding on a round of "newfashionds" and the short rib a appetizer we couldn't have been steered in a better direction. Her demeanor was bright and informative yet not at all pushy. For how busy it was , she made time for us. And that short rib? Delicious. The roasted garlic mash was amazing and the roasted beef it's crown..fricking royalty.. Now I was worried. First dish out and drinks were a hit? Usually there is a miss right around the corner.. but no... out comes our side ceasar, fresh and inviting. Then my chowder.and the ball dropped..seriously I'd go here just for the chowder it's that good. "I Should have got a bowl",i lamented. Then the entrees. She had the black and blue burger medium.. on point. I ate half of it.lol..I had the Shepard pie, they had me at "fillet mignon and ribeye ground"... and it did not disappoint. She ate half of mine. Dessert suggested was chocolate cake and ice cream and if anywhere this was where it could mess up bad, but surprise! It was great. A large portion fit for two, deliciously fluffy,we ate it all! Then came the bill..dinner and two rounds of drinks came in at under a hundred..unheard of..wow..it wasn't life changing but it was great, hands down great. High four stars for me. I came to celebrate a birthday and had semi-high hopes for this restaurant. I had seen photos that made it look nice and inviting, I had heard fairly positive things about it, but I was sorely disappointed. The ambiance was nice, but could not disguise their overly seasoned food. The first thing we ordered was their duck confit. This is usually supposed to have a smooth taste and it was anything but that. It was extremely salty and the best part of that appetizer was the pickled veggies that came with it because it cut through the immense taste of salt. Then we waited for half an hour to get my plate of fettuccine Alfredo with prawns and their $7 burger for Burger Week. We had gotten there within the first 10 minutes of them opening and ended up leaving at 6:20 PM. NOT because of us enjoying our food and talking, but because they took so long to get our meals out to us. 10 other customers received their meals before we did. (There was only 2 of us!) By the time our food came I was starving and scooped a big forkful of pasta and was let down. It barely had any flavor and only came with 4 prawns. For a dish that cost nearly $30, I did not think it was worth it at all. As for my partner, he enjoyed his $7 burger and his plate of fries that cost an additional $4. Now, I'm not a penny pincher and don't mind spending a few extra bucks for a nice dinner, but this $4 plate of fries came with less than 15 fries! For those of us who appreciate a nice dinner when we see one, I think you'd be better off eating somewhere else. read more

It pains me to write this review because we really used to love this place! But this is our 3rd or 4th visit in a row that it has not been up to par, and this was by far the worst meal we've ever had here. The menu used to be great, pretty extensive and a good selection of choices from comfort food to salads and lots of great appetizers, and the house breads were always fantastic. They truly had it dialed in for quite a few years. It was a good value and one of our go to places the whole family loved. They have had a couple new menus over the last couple years, with the selection becoming smaller each time and the prices going up. They just put out another new menu and apparently have a new chef. Honestly this new menu is not nearly as appetizing as the previous ones and once again the prices rose. $22 for fish and chips that were $16-18 before is a turn off and now they also charge for each side including salad with entrees. And the wonderful bread is no longer, replaced by dry, bland biscuits with a caramel Cajun butter that we don't relate to at all. Bring back the bread!!! Biscuits and caramel Cajun butter definitely don't pair well with much on the menu, and having a Caesar salad with them instead of the great bread they used to serve is not enjoyable in the least. We tried the corn bread in a pan as we love good corn bread too and we couldn't even eat one piece it was so bland, dense and unsatisfying. Bar none the worst corn bread we've ever tasted! Anyhow I could get into more detail but suffice to say after years of really enjoying the plaza grill as regular customers we probably won't be returning again. It bums me out too cuz this was a great spot in a sea of mediocrity around this area, and now it's over. In my opinion the new menu is a fail and the new chef is not a very good match for this establishment. If this is the new direction the owners are moving in they are in for a rude awakening. They took good and made it mediocre and pricey with less options. Business is already down due to the weed economy and I don't see it picking up soon either with the direction the Plaza has moved in. After waving a 20 dollar bill to get his attention, I asked what beer he had on tap. He waved his hand in front of the beer tap handle and said "These" and walked away. 4 minutes later he came back. I finally got my answer. I ordered a beer and a Bloody Mary. No napkin, no olive, no celery and very little vodka. Next drink was suppose to be a Cape Cod. Of course no lime. Awww so sad that the bad reviews were right. Mediocre food, well the oysters were the worst I ever had. Small and we're not shuck from the bottom shell so it was hard to eat with ppl watching. The friend calamari was really tough and dry. Specialty drinks were delish but not strong. The servers seem to have this sense of I'm working in a fancy place attitude except for the one I had. PG is one of my family's favorite restaurant. The food is always good the staff very friendly. One night I was torn between a few dishes I hadn't tried yet and asked our server Olivia what she would recommend. The salmon (a special that night) was one of the best meals I've ever had.
