We had a small table for two with a nice view of the bay. Didn't have to wait to be seated (it was a Thursday). Our server was very pleasant and let us know the special of the day, a halibut dish with a creamy pepper sauce. Debating between that and another dish, we asked her recommendation and she suggested the fish. So we did it. My wife and I traditionally split meals at restaurants, because they generally give you so much food, you leave uncomfortably stuffed. We prefer leaving comfortably satisfied. So we split the Arugula Salad. They bring complementary bread with a garlic butter or basalmic and olive oil. We preferred the basalmic. The garlic butter wasn't very garlicky. But the salad was excellent. They split it for us for a small upcharge. The Halibut was excellent. We had to split it ourselves, but that was not a problem for us. It was served over couscous and was excellent. A bit small to split, so we added a cheesecake dessert with ganache. Very good. We paired it all with a Cabernet from the Oakville area of Napa (where we had just visited) and it was excellent as well. Our server was attentive. The pacing of our meal was very well done. For my birthday this year, I wanted to have a trip up to the redwoods and we stayed in Eureka as our base. I found this restauraunt on Yelp and we reserved it for my birthday dinner on a Saturday night. We sat by the window and had a beautiful view of the sunset and bay. Upon being seated we were served some bread with some whipped butter mixed with some sort of seafood I believed? I forgot, but the butter was delicious. Our first round of bread however, was average at best and was very dense and doughy. The next rounds of bread were significantly better though, so maybe there's an inconsistency with the way they bake their bread in-house. I ordered the seafood penne pasta and my boyfriend ordered the king salmon with risotto. Both were "specials" and were not on the menu. However after digging into reviews here, it seems they are not so much specials since both dishes have been served here for the past 7ish years. Seafood penne pasta: I would rate a 3/5, maybe a 2.5/5. The pasta itself was not al dente which was disappointing. The "star" of this dish was supposed to be the scallop, which was severely undercooked! It was super soft and mushy. The shrimp was alright...some were overcooked. The salmon was also dry. I think the only thing I really enjoyed was the mussels, clams, and the sauce. The sauce had some curry with a small kick to it. This dish was just okay. Escargot: We ordered as our appetizer, I'd give it a 3.5/5! The escargot was a little soft but paired wonderfully with the bread. Creme brûlée: 3/5. Our waitress kindly put a birthday candle on it for my birthday. :) I enjoyed it, and it was very custardy! The downside was that the sugar on top was too burnt. I can't speak much for my boyfriend's dish, I did have a bite of his salmon and it was alright, maybe a bit too salty. The service however was wonderful and our waitress was super kind and helpful. This is a very happy four. We were seated with a great view in the front. Service was but waited a while for our entrees. We got started with some excellent butter with bread. Soup and salad came with our entrees and were mediocre. We shared a duck breast medium rare with delicious dark cherry sauce and pretty solid rice. Also shared a halibut risotto which was the catch of the day, bland until we added salt. Would definitely come again for the butter and duck breast. read more

The service was attentive and fairly quick. Right when I was thinking "this would be a perfect time for some bread to go with our drinks" a waiter was bringing out a fresh plate for us and asking if we had any questions about the menu or specials she went over. It was a smaller dining room but it didn't feel too crowded, there were about 5 other tables enjoying a meal but the volume wasn't too overpowering. I enjoyed the lighting and ambiance of the restaurant. The parking looks like it's just street parking, we were dropped off so unsure if there was a lot in the back perhaps. The food and drinks were delicious, everything was cooked well and the portions are HUGE. You could easily split an entree if you aren't feeling overly hungry, but if not plenty of leftovers. If I'm in the area again I would visit as a nice night out as prices weren't too bad but not cheap. read more

We made a reservation for 5pm today. Showed up on time & was sat immediately. Sat there for 11 minutes before anyone said anything to us. Two servers walked by us 2 times & said nothing. This place is absolutely amazing, the food and the staff saved our date night! After having our reservation canceled on us somewhere else we ended up going to Humboldt Bay bistro on a whim and getting Vanessa as our waitress. She was so amazing, super knowledgeable about the menu, and so fun and funny. We loved laughing and joking with her. The food was amazing, we got appetizers and entrées, and the crème brûlée and some vanilla ice cream, every single thing was perfect! This is now going to be a regular date night spot for us, even living all the way in southern Humboldt. The other staff, Grace and Ada are absolutely delightful! 10 out of 10, highly recommend! My husband and I went for my birthday. We were somehow listed as VIP's which was super nice-it was my birthday! Loved our waitress Marilee, on it all the time and so nice. Ordered: kumamoto oysters with wasabi cream sauce Tableside Caesar Salad Rogue River Trout on Risotto Lamb Chops (side cup of Clam Chowder) Absolutely delicious food, great table side (show) by an awesome guy for our Caesar Salad. Three things only: 1. I never use the green tops of romaine for any salad I make but if I do I chop it finer. Our salad had huge pieces of top greens. 2. Found the bay leave in my chowder..score! 3. My braised greens and potatoes were lukewarm. Otherwise, we will be back to enjoy this awesome food. read more

OMGoodness, this restaurant is, in my opinion, the best place to eat in Eureka. The menu has something for everyone from fantastic clam chowder to the best cheeseburger around, all made from fresh, top quality ingredients. It's only a few blocks from the bay so the views are nice plus it's centrally located between quaint boutiques, candy and ice cream stores, and areas to walk your K9 kids. We go there monthly and have never, ever been disappointed. Well, except when they were closed. read more

It took me a while to decide on writing this review or not. My fiance said show some grave, but I thought it's best to warn people. I (37F) originally called the bistro to reserve a Chef's prix-fix table for my fiance's (46M) birthday. I spoke with someone over the phone Feb 21st. I explained the reason for the visit and date, April 18th. We discussed food preferences and allergies, as well as budget, $100/per person. I said I don't eat pork and my fiance doesn't eat eggplant. He's a steak and potatoes kind of guy and I'm a chicken and fish with pasta kind of gal. The person over the phone said they wrote it all down and we'll see them in two months. Fast forward to the day of the dinner. It's a small location, but warm and cozy. The hostess and waitress are so welcoming and engaging. The waitress tells me she was who took my information down and we talked about preferences again. I reiterated no pork for me because that can be an issue. She assured me that wouldn't be a problem. A server comes out and he prepares a fantastic table side Ceasar salad. The best I ever had. When it was time for the entree, the waitress brings out a BBQ gamish hen with a vegetable medley with bacon. I was taken back and asked, "I'm sorry, but did you say bacon?" The waitress realized the issue and immediately apologized. She leaves the other plate for my fiance, and goes back to the kitchen. My fiance cuts until his hen, it's raw! We wait until the waitress comes back. She drops off my new plate with new vegetable medley without bacon. My fiance notifies the waitress of the raw hen. She again apologizes, and returns to the kitchen. It's my turn to cut into the hen, and low and behold, it's raw as well! I'm in disbelief. How could we possibly be served 3 bad meals at an upscale bistro? The waitress comes back to let us know the kitchen is working on a new plate for my fiance. I show her my raw hen. She's embarrassed at this point. The server from the salad comes over to apologize by this point as well. I tell the server, "let's just start over. We'll take two regular menus and order off there." I went back and forth over the menu several times, then I realized, I completely lost my appetite due to their negligence. I let the waitress know that I've lost my appetite and would like our check for the salad. She goes to the kitchen, comes back, and tells us the salad is covered and continued to apologize. I appreciate how apologetic the waitress was. Clearly there was a lack of communication between what I asked for, steak dinner for my fiance and chicken or fish with pasta for me. The pork was something I could forgive, but to bring us two dinners that were raw and not even what I asked for is totally wrong. The chef never even came out to apologize for their raw food error. We had really high hopes for this bistro. Little did they know, but my fiance and I were there to try it out the restaurant because we wanted to do a "restaurant buy-out" for our wedding reception next year November 2026. Now, due to their multiple errors, we'll never go back and we won't be recommending them to anyone we know. read more

Had our very first experience here on Friday, spur of the moment made a reservation that same day and was able to get a table for 2. The restaurant overlooks the bay and we just so happened to get a seat with a view. It was busy, but everything we ordered came in a timely manner. Every staff member we interacted with was very friendly. The crab cakes were delicious. The prawn tacos were good, could have used an additional sauce. And the Salmon Risotto was delicious! Where shall I start.I ordered Prime rib. came with baked potato and Brussel sprouts. Prime rib was so chewy I had to spit it out or choke on it. Baked potato was in the warming over for at least 5 hours before I got it. It was wrapped in foil, a sure sign of a cheap restaurant, the outside of the skin was spotted black. The Brussel sprouts were over fired and burnt. I had already started eating before I was offered butter, sour cream, for my potato, or horse radish or au jus for my prime rib. Who has to wait for those, why would I have to ask for any of those? Those are a given! The building has a handicap ramp that led to a closed wire gate with a dog. Eventually someone noticed us and put the dog away and let us in. Getting to out table I had to climb stairs. I am handicapped, apparently they didn't get the memo on how to offer accessibility. Staff was wonderful. My meal was compted but it didn't make me feel any better. Such a disappointment for the 4 star rating it got. read more

We ordered lots of dishes (escargot, calamari fries, "tableside" Cesar salad, the halbut fish special, filet mignon, rack of lamb, French onion soup, carrot curry coconut soup, crème brûlée), and everything was delicious! Presentation of everything was excellent. We got to try a few complimentary pours of wines to help narrow down our favorites on the wine list and ended up with the perfect bottle. The restaurant itself felt elegant and romantic, and service was warm, friendly and also very professional. We comfortably lingered for hours (thankfully we got an early reservation) and never felt rushed. read more

We happened on this gem hidden away and slightly off the beaten path. What a gem it was!! Vanessa attended to our every need with grace and David made the most delicious tableside Caesar salad I think I've ever had while sharing some history and lore about the building and surrounding area. While I have had good experiences at Humboldt Bay Bistro, last night was not one of them. It was not a busy night and we were seated quickly. Our server seemed very distracted and couldn't seem to remember the specials or the market prices which were not quoted to us. My dining partner ordered the halibut which was perfect. The problem was with my dish, I ordered the "special penne pasta" which should just be on the menu because it's been a special every time I've been here. The pasta was over cooked. The sauce was full of sand and stray shells and the scallop was also overcooked. I was also charged extra for a change from the soup du jour. For soup? Seems petty. For the price point offered we came out at over $120 before tip for two dinners, no alcohol, no appetizers, this is just unacceptable. For comparison, prepped halibut is available at the docks right now for $20/lb. They charged $50/lb here. While my complaint is not with the halibut, I expect more at this price. I love the ambiance but can't think about returning with such disappointing food preparation. read more

Potatoes needed seasoning. 4/5 - French Onion Soup: really good 4/5 - Pan Seared Rack of Lamb: Half-rack with honey-mint demi glace, smashed fingerling potatoes and seasonal vegetables. The lamb and sauce were very good, but the sides were meh. 4/5 - Calamari Steak Fries: tasty 4/5 - Fish and Chips: Tempura battered cod. Crispy and tender. The spicy aioli was good. 3/5 - Chocolate Torte: very rich 3/5 - Cajun Fries: better with salt added 3/5 - Cheesecake: basic and good 3/5 - Fried Ice Cream: Ice cream covered in pound cake and tempura batter before fried. Great concept. Just pretty good, though. 2/5 - Creme Brulee: We were initially very excited because it seemed to be perfectly crisped without burning. Then we found out that it had too much sugar on top and it was like a thick pane of glass. Too bad... this would have been rated higher, but the sugar was almost inedible. 2/5 - Peach Bellini: tastes like a mimosa 2/5 - 2020 Turnbull Cabernet 2/5 - Complimentary bread This place is pricey and not everything is worth it. I would recommend sticking to the entrees and avoid the extras. read more
