We have been to this restaurant at their old location and their new location. We have had a wonderful experience each time we have eaten here. They have delicious food, wonderful service and we love the beautifully thought out decor. Although we loved the old location and miss the piano they had there, the new location is a little hidden gem located in Sunny Brae. They have a beautiful bar and a lovely outdoor area with heat lamps! They play pleasant music at a good volume. The atmosphere is just right at this restaurant! The deviled eggs are cooked, just right. I find this a dish where they are often too dense. But this restaurant does an amazing job with them. We went tonight for my birthday and everyone loved their food. My cocktail was delicious and the staff even brought out a yummy dessert birthday surprise for me! We stumbled upon this restaurant starving and not caring what was on the menu. When we arrived, service was a bit slow even though the place was empty but we didn't mind much and shared some lovely conversation. Carriage House has small town charm vibes and overall, we enjoyed our food and had plenty of leftovers! My friend ordered the braised short ribs and I got a margarita pizza. Had the opportunity to try the new Carriage House for a soft "dry run" opening. The new owners and staff were all busy and professional. They were slammed upon opening and worked their way through the first hour and a half of chaos, steadily and always making sure everyone was happy. Once the initial wave of people passed they got into their groove so to speak and the remainder of the evening while I was there was smooth and very relaxed. New interior layout for this newest eatery in town is cozy and inviting with a comfortable arrangement of a few two and four top tables and chairs, along with a few seats at the bar. Started with the deviled eggs and the haricrots verts small plates, both were very good and enough to share. Next the smoked tune rillette its was very good, the smoked tuna made for an interesting twist to this tuna spread with toasted crackers. Last, the dirty martini shrimp and my favorite dish of the night. Loaded with succulent shrimp, olives, and pistashios with a lemon oil drizzle. It was delicious. Finally, dessert the corn mousse was sweet creamy and full corn flavored a nice finish. A '19 Brassfield Estates Pinot Noir to go along with it all, made for a great meal. This is true to form Nor Cal slow dining. Take your time and enjoy the experience. One star is for the convenient location for me. This is most definitely not an Italian restaurant, despite the exterior banner. It's American food with some Mexican & French references thrown in. The only good thing was the cocktail. And not true for everyone in my party, just me. Menu is not very interesting and is extremely limited if you don't eat meat. Food was not impressive, prices were FAR too high, given the quality. Service was lackluster and inattentive. Two people came in & asked if they could sit outside. Response was blunt "no" and they were directed to an inside table. The place wasn't busy and there was room outside for them. Won't be going back or recommending. Not even for a cocktail at the bar. We frequented the Carriage House when it was in downtown Arcata, for special occasions several times a year. The interior ambiance was elegant but cozy, the food was delicious and carefully plated, and the cocktails were amazing. The Carriage House has since moved to Bayside, and appears to be under new ownership. The result: the new location is in a strip mall with windows that look out into a parking lot. The interior is full of neon signs and a huge television, and is generally drab. The food is slopped on plates and tastes subpar. The service is...fine, but nothing compared to the standards set by the previous location and staff. And yet, the prices remain the same at upwards of $40/plate. WTF!!! Went to a date night dinner on a Saturday. We had not been there for a few months, but both enjoyed it the few times we had gone. First bad sign, empty, at 6, on a Saturday. Second, menu had changed, (I then remembered seeing a change in ownership sign a couple of months previously ) Ok, new ownership, menu still had one or two main stays from before. How bad could it be? Well, bad enough for me to get an app just to let the ownership know how crappy it was. Salad was meh,a salad, heirloom tomato app was big and clumsy, was again meh. Sign number three that it was complete crap was the waiter asked if we wanted to box our app and salad and then boxed it up, and set it on the table next to us, instead of taking it in the back. Weird. Main course was horrendous. Penne pasta vegetable was a shit show. Steamed vegetables on pasta noodles, clumped Parmesan bullshit. Pasta water in the bottom of the pasta dish. School cafeterias are better. Short ribs on mashed was trash, pathetic little ribs with little actual meat that was tough to get off the bone, and was over cooked dry and tasteless. What the hell happened!!!! We lied and said our movie was starting and we needed to leave. Gave the food to a homeless guy and my wife ate dinner at the Movies, a hot dog. $156 in total, including tip, (not the kids fault he just works there) waste of money. Terrible, no good, Humboldt County bs. We used to like going there, the food was good, atmosphere was great, drinks were nice. A slightly elevated dining experience (especially for Humboldt County) that was easy and accessible. Even had a live piano player on weekends, a touch of class. Whoever took this place over has ruined it, and I expect it will be year another empty storefront in Arcata. Not to mention they have the nerve to have the papers/peoples choice award for best new restaurant hanging in a couple of places, when CLEARLY that was from the previous owners work. Gross. Ten months ago I wrote a 5-Star review (below). Now I'm revising it down after a recent experience. The original chef has moved on and ownership is changing. The food COULD be really good, but it seems like the staff simply doesn't care. There was only one other couple in the place and yet our plates were tepid when served (chicken and beef dishes). Overall current observations: - The room is a bit cold and having the door to the back area wide open created a draft. - While friendly, the staff was more interested in chatting amongst themselves than checking on their customers. - The food has gone downhill. What were previously wonderfully crispy smashed potatoes are now just smashed. The chicken was OK but uninspiring. And while the Caesar Salad was good the Heirloom Tomato dish could have used more tomatoes. Would really like to see them succeed but they need to improve! [Original Post] Delightfully delicious! This is a really pretty restaurant with a limited menu. It would be a great place to get drinks like on a first date where you want something intimate and romantic but still informal. We ended up just having appetizers because the only entree with protein was the braised short ribs as they were out of the chicken and the others were udon noodles. The appetizers were delicious-- a chicken liver mousse and deviled eggs. The cocktails are interesting too; my boyfriend got a tequila based one that had pickle juice. Sorry to say we had 2 terrible experiences at the Carriage House. 1 We had 6:30 reservations and were seated at that time . Took 5 mins for a menu 10 mins to order drinks another 10 mins to order food. Got our drinks 20 mins after seated got our Caesar salad 40 mins after seated and that's it never got our other food orders and had to leave for a show at 8 pm at 7:50. Restaurant 3/4 full only. 2 We figured we would try again thinking they had an off night so we gave them a second chance. Reservations at 8 pm. Or waitress was very good but as soon as we sat down we were told they were out of the 2 dinner entrees which they only offer two. We had Delicatta squash which would be taken off the menu. Cut in rings and poorly spiced it would be something you do at home for your kids zero creativity . The carrots for 18 were a c minus, the udon noodles were supposed to have sausage in it but did not . The only thing that was good was the Choc dessert . Sorry but won't be going back 2 strikes out is enough for me and over 100 dollars spent. read more

Really was looking forward to the new location in sunnybrae. Very disappointed! The seating was cramped. Kept getting bumped into as people went to the restroom. Service was terrible. Food was mediocre and Bland. The restroom was dirty and uncleaned. We were there shortly after opening so this meant it had not been cleaned prior to opening. Ambience was weird. Did not feel classy at all. Terrible experience. Probably won't be going back nor can we recommend unfortunately. read more

The ambiance is great and the chairs were quite comfortable. The drink menu is fun with a variety of choices from original staples to cocktails with fun names and a unique twist - it was hard to decide which one to try so we ordered a few to sample. For the food, every dish we had was fantastic and would highly recommend the shrimp, the deviled eggs and the heirloom tomato salad. We couldn't decide on one dessert so we tried them all and I can't pick a favorite. The dark chocolate cremeux was exquisite! I've eaten here a coupe of time now, once on a busy Friday evening (had to sit at the bar) and one on New Year's Eve, which was a multi-course pre fix menu. This place is expensive for Humboldt but worth it. Both times the food was excellent and the service aimed to please. This is a small place, so don't expect a table on a busy night. But despite its smallness it packs a pretty decent-sized menu and a full bar with an interesting cocktail list. You could order anything; everything we had was obviously prepared with care. Presentation, flavor, temperature, all good (even if a little delayed). What surprised me was how good the desserts were, because I could see how small the kitchen was and yet they managed to pull that off too. Hats off to the carrot cake. read more

The new location is pretty crammed and is probably better for some cocktails with friends rather than a nice dinner. Tables are small, paper menus are dirty with sauce from former patrons, no longer serving steak, and only two front of house staff to serve probably 8+ tables including a bartender and a server. The staff was good even though they were definitely overwhelmed but the food was mediocre. We got the fish Nicoise and the vodka pasta which was okay but we won't be going back. The clam chowder was delicious but it came with slices of toast that seemed like store bought sourdough. The total was probably about $140 which I'd rather spend at a location with better quality food & atmosphere. The lemon drop and espresso martini are great but I think it would be cool if they did some more infused cocktails to match the high class atmosphere of the restaurant. Overall : tons of potential but the expectation does not match the reality OR the price. read more

I recently went back to Carriage House, I was shocked. The menu is still very expensive, but has dramatically dropped in quality. $18 for heritage tomato with ricotta on a slice of baggett? Deviled eggs? No sign of the creative things we saw 6 months prior. We tried the braised short ribs again - they were terrible, they appeared to be more like a chuck roast cooked in a crock pot drizzled with a wine reduction, than what we saw the first time. It was loud the entire time we were there - and not because of a crowd - it was noise coming from the kitchen - what is that about? Phenomenal dishes and great service. Meal was an exceptional experience and surpassed my expectations. We tried everything on the menu except two main meat entrees they ran out of that night. We went a number of times under the original ownership, but the new owners need to focus on elevating the service and the food. Service was poor. The table next to us waited for menus for close to 20 minutes. We barely got a hello and had to ask for numerous items during service. The staff wasn't attentive or interested in the customers. The new food items were one note and some of the same appetizers as the last menu, are now flavor less. The atmosphere hasn't changed, which is the one positive . I really wanted to like the ownership change as the owners own another local restaurant, but for the amount of $ they charge, they need to step up their service and food game. I know it's not the Bay Area, but come on, pay attention to your customers, don't bring one roll for two people, check on customers meal, ask if they'd like dessert or another drink, improve the food, be nice, pay attention to details....we won't be back unfortunately, food and service not worth the high price tag. read more

Precocious and expensive. We arrived 4 minutes early for our reservation, in the rain, and received "We're not open yet." to which my wife said, "it's raining and cold; can we please come in?" They let us in and after four minutes we were seated. The menu is sparse. There are no meals, only individual dishes. I ordered the chicken my wife ordered the delicada squash. We shared our dishes which arrived an hour later. The chicken was good. The squash, at $23, wasn't very tasty nor plentiful. The napkins were very large, though. We won't be going back. I think their staff should print out their resumes and pass them around town. They won't be open long. read more
