Cuban food in Arcata! Excellent service, cocktails, food. Havana opened four months ago on the second floor of the Jacoby building, in itself a worthy adventure. Havana replaces a 37 year old restaurant! Havana is in a wide open space with a bar area on one end and dining at the other. Please ignore the mid-restaurant sections. Know you're heading to a good experience. We chose dining, which looks over Arcata Plaza. I think because we did not have a reservation we were placed at a table furthest from the windows. My son said he still enjoyed the view, so there you go. I have not recently been waited on by a person so lovely as our server Alysia P. She caught our excitement at finding the restaurant, including my son moving there recently and knowing it used to be a different restaurant. She let us know much of the history and she worked for the previous restaurant. Cocktails: Mojito and Cubanisimo two thumbs up Dinner: Ropa Vieja sandwich and Lechon Asado. My husband and I came here after a long hike in the Redwood national park, and we were starving! We looked for a place that closes late, as it was already 8:30 pm. Service was excellent - the staff were very nice, welcoming and friendly. We loved all the food! It's so delicious and the presentation was beautiful. And the vibe inside is fun and airy. The food was amazing tons of flavor and it's satisfied. I visit the area quite often. I come from on the Sacramento area and have never tried this place before. Looked good and I went to try it out tonight. To my disappointment, I stood at the hostess station for 15 minutes to be seated. 6 different servers/employees walked by and never even acknowledged me. And it wasn't that they didn't see me. For one, i'm 6'3 310lbs. Kinda hard to miss. Secondly, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM MADE EYE CONTACT WITH ME AND DIDN'T SAY A WORD! Needless to say, I walked out. We came in on a quiet Thursday night about an hour before they closed and sat in the bar. Havana's ambiance in the bar is fantastic. The old wood bar has soul and definitely deserves a group bellied up enjoying drinks, camaraderie and ceviche. Speaking of ceviche, at the bartender's recommendation, we ordered that as an appetizer and were very happy. It was a generous portion and really nicely flavored with plenty of meat. The plantain chips where a nice crunch too. For our main courses, we ordered the Camarones al Ajillo and the Caldoza Cubana. The Camarones (shrimp) were really well-flavored and super tasty, and the rice and beans were surprisingly filling for what looked like a fairly small portion. I think they got it just about perfect. I'd never had Caldoza Cubana, but it was so good. Rich, filling, tasty stew that is as good as you've ever had. It came in a covered China dish too, which felt pleasantly fancy. I'd held off coming in based on some of the reviews I saw, but I am so disappointed I did. Havana is absolutely worth the trip, and we will be back. read more

We recently had a big birthday party at Havana. We met with Shona to come up with a buffet menu for about 16 guests. It was wonderful! Appetizers were laid out while our guests arrived and mingled. Then the buffet of a very varied, delicious dinner showed up. Our guests all enjoyed the assorted dishes; many of them never having Cuban cuisine before. We stuffed ourselves but still most managed to have some of the delicious desserts as well. Our server was very attentive and delightful. Some of our guests were surprised to learn this is still a very new establishment and that our buffet party was their first. I hope they continue to offer more Cuban dishes and can make Havana really feel like Havana decor-wise in the future. I wish them success! read more

I had heard great things about Havana! I recommended to my book club that we should go there to celebrate three of the ladies birthdays. There were eight of us. We had a warm greeting and the service continued that way. Our Server was very helpful and efficient. The food had excellent flavor and was presented well. I wish I had taken some pictures. I thought the pricing was right on. I would highly recommend giving it a try. You won't be disappointed! read more

I took my family here for my fiancé's birthday, and it was the worst meal we've had in a restaurant in years. My daughter ordered the pork loin, and she was served a pork chop. My son ordered the Cuban smash burger, and it was so greasy he had to stop eating it halfway through because it grossed him out. I ordered the Cuban sandwich, and I had to fight off puking my whole drive home. My sweet fiancé ordered the $52 steak meal, and half of it was fat. My Cuban sandwich was supposed to come with sweet potato fries, and they were just regular potatoes, which ended up being the only thing that tasted decent. I ordered a Coke for my beverage, and it was flat. The carpets were old, nasty and stained. Our server was professional, and attentive. We should have left when we saw that the huge restaurant had a total of 8 people eating there, including my family. $13 short of a $200 dinner for four people. The only person who ate their whole meal was my daughter, and that was because she just finished playing a junior high basketball game. I will not be surprised if the restaurant is closed for good by the next time we go down to Arcata. read more

I am going to start by saying I don't mind paying if the food is good. This place is not worth it. The Piñas Coladas were a glass full of sugar could not taste the alcohol and the food was not high quality nor that good it felt like a food truck meal. read more

The food is very good, on this trip we just tried several of the appetizers. Fresh and flavorful. They have a good menu offering, something for everyone. The service was ok, but for a new restaurant it was good. I try not to judge a new restaurant on service because they are figuring it out still and they will. Because of the quick turn over from Plaza grill I assumed there would not be much change to the atmosphere, they made some changes to represent the Cuban flare but it still feels like Plaza Grill and I hope they have plans on making more changes to make it feel like Havana. Some though, may appreciate the nostalgia. I was happy to see they were busy. Overall, I would recommend trying Havana and I'm looking forward to trying more of the menu. I hear the cocktails are very good and I'm excited to come back and try some! read more

I finally tried this place out yesterday and was disappointed. I ordered arroz con pollo. It reminded me of soggy rice a roni with a freaking drumstick on top. I did not like my food. The service was fine, but it did take quite a while to get our food and drinks. My bill for two people to have a meal and a beverage each was $92! I will not be returning. read more

This is what Humboldt needed. I have been 7 times and every time it blows me away. The food is so flavorful and delicious. They have a great happy hour menu as well. Highly recommend trying this out. Visiting from out of town for the holiday from the Bay Area, very pleasantly surprised by the delicious food and fun cocktails. We enjoyed the croquettes, crunchy and flavorful with a sweet and smoky sauce, the ceviche, shrimp and the beef stew was satisfying and savory. Our 6 yo was delighted with the kids' menu. A lovely experience in a historic building, right on the plaza! Oh and they had a roaring fireplace to make the space that much more cozy. read more

Save your money! The food was awful. The calamari was tiny, and overcooked, with the oil it was cooked in being the only thing you could taste. The potato puree was lumpy and the pork loin cooked until all moisture was removed. One of the worst meals we have ever had. read more

The foodies up here know this is only average food, nothing special and unfortunately doesn't excel in Cuban or even Cuban fusion. Also too expensive for what you get, my son had chile relleno and no sides included- no rice no beans just a pepper and a little sauce. He ate my salad because he was still hungry. Other son's shrimp came with rice and beans (albeit in a TEENY metal cream pitcher). The service sucked, it really did. My other guests got ice in their water and I got a full glass of water that splashed all over the table as it was set down, no ice, no clean up, that bothered me. The service really was awful, the server seemed very distracted and not focused on her current table at all, she never checked in after the food arrived and the empty plates sat on the table far too long until I had to ask for the bill to get it cleared and us out of there. I like trying new places but this is one and done, I won't revisit. read more

What a terrible experience. Went there the first time to have a cocktail. Couldn't get service. They were unsure who could wait on us. They told us that they were aware that people understood that they used to be Plaza Grill and people expected that but they were different now. They were literally unwilling to close this out at the end of the night. We asked if we should just walk out and not pay. It was awkward and uncomfortable. The service was terrible. They didn't know what they were offering. They didn't know what beers they had on tap. The service was terrible. They advertise as a restaurant and a bar. We sat next to what used to be the kitchen area of the old Plaza grill. And during the 45 minutes that we sat there the only food that we saw being prepped was a salad and a couple of appetizers. The staff was unfriendly and the service was terrible. Sad and unfortunate. read more

My party and I tried their happy hour on 2/19/25 and were very happy with the choices of food and drinks in fact we decided to have dinner there as well which was very good. We loved how they changed the tables to the front of the restaurant facing the Arcata Plaza and the use of vintage dinner and serving plates as done in Cuba! The servers were very good and always available. So with that I'm giving them 5 stars for very good adult drinks, food, service and atmosphere! read more

Went for dinner tonight. When we entered the classic Jacoby Storehouse it smelled moldy deep old Humboldt mold. So gross.. Getting to the restaurant was not very handicap friendly. I forgot It's really far to walk for a handicap person. It was the Plaza Grill with some decorations. Same old plaza grill. We ordered plantain chips they were good. The green and red sauces were not great. I felt like they almost tasted like something and the whole thing was so salty. The Salsa Rosa was the best thing we ate. Very delicious. Served in a tiny metal thimble I could have had a bowl of that. Small portion thought. I needed a fork to put it on the chips. It needs a bigger bowl. And 3x the amount. .The croquettes were tasty couldn't find the ham. I expected a rice cheese ham ball but these were like fried mashed potato poppers Tasty justifying not what I expected served with 1000 island dressing. I got a Cubano it had cucumbers on it not pickle and some ranch crema something, lettuce (?), and it was cold (?) Eh. Fries were soggy and cold. The table top had a sticky weird film like old over polished wood it had a tacky stick to it. My chair was rickety. Just old. Our waitress Olithia was very nice. $100. I don't feel like going back.
