As much as Iove visiting Arcata... the love is mostly for the scenery and the hikes. As far as fabulous a fabulous food scene, this is not the town for it. Well, at least I thought that until I visited campground. This is definitely a five star restaurant in a small little town. Save your money and eat somewhere else. I've given this place two chances, and both visits left me feeling ripped off. The first time, we came for our anniversary. The service was mediocre, and the food didn't justify the price. The server recommended the gazelle special but never mentioned it was $175. I assumed it was priced similarly to the rest of the menu. When the bill arrived, I was shocked to find one entrée cost $175--and to make matters worse, it was overcooked and served with nothing more than mashed potatoes and asparagus. At that price, you'd expect something exceptional. On our second visit, we both ordered ribeyes cooked medium. Both steaks arrived nearly raw and had to be sent back. They cut them in half to cook them faster, which ruined the presentation. Even then, the meal was overpriced for what amounted to a steak and a side of asparagus. I'm done giving this place chances. If you're going to charge $175 for a special, your staff should clearly disclose the price before taking the order. The food, service, and value simply don't justify the cost. read more

We were well taken care of at Campground. We were staying in the area for our visit to the redwoods national park and decided on this place for dinner one of the nights. We bravely walked in on a Saturday around 7pm without a reservation and although they were all booked up for tables, we were lucky enough to grab two seats at the bar. There were two ladies working at the bar and they were very friendly, informative, and cheery. I was envious of their energy levels! For dinner, we ordered: - Bruschetta Panzanella Salad - our server gave us a heads up this is deconstructed bruschetta. It doesn't actually come on bread toasts so I'm glad she set that expectation - Vodka Cream Sauce Tagliatelle with Chicken - this was delicious and the chicken was grilled nicely with good flavor - New York Strip with mashed potatoes - this was also very good and the mashed potatoes were very smooth We ordered cocktails (the campfire & up a creek) both were great and the bartenders checked up on us often. We had a great experience and would recommend coming here. Best to have a reservation especially on the weekends but if you're a couple and willing to sit at the bar, it's worth a shot if you don't have a reservation. Cheers! read more

Went to Campground with my colleagues on a work trip. It was a weeknight, and we were seated right away. I loved the ambiance and decor, very elevated rustic. The service was good...our waiter was very helpful, it did take a while for our food to come out but we were having a good time chatting, so we did not mind. I had the filet minion and it was fantastic! So tender, it practically melted in your mouth. The flavor was delightful. I had the fried green beans for the side, as well as a wedge salad they were both alright, however, the steak was definitely the star of the show. If you're in Eureka and looking for a nice dinner out, give Campground a try! read more

Went to dinner with another couple for the 2nd time here ... Ist time the ribeye was good , but what a difference a year makes ... This time around I ordered the ribeye again ... but what was served to me was not a ribeye steak ... there was no ribeye cap or tail , no fat or marbling to the meat ... I realize a ribeye cut from the loin end resembles a New York strip ... But this was a New York steak , and not a good grade of beef at all ... My buddy Tom was a cook at OH's steak house for 20 years ... He agreed with me , it was not a ribeye steak ... You pay a lot of money here for a good steak dinner ... It was a shame that the highlight of that dinner was the wedge salad ... With exception to the entirely overcooked lardons , which I was afraid I would break a tooth on ... not worth the $100 dollar a plate dinner , we will never return to this establishment... don't waste your time of money here read more

Cozy spot one block off the plaza. Service was friendly and very much on the casual side although that's not out of place in Arcata. Be prepared to spend $$$ - the menu prices are right up there with what you'll see in SF, LA, NYC, etc. The three of us had the duck prosciutto, the beet salad, a filet mignon, the burger and the duck. The prosciutto appetizer was delicious but woefully skimpy - barely a tablespoon of the fig jam and barely a couple ounces of the prosciutto that left us with a lot of plain bread. Would be happy to pay more for a larger portion size. The beet salad was fantastic and the meat entrees were all perfectly executed although the sides could use improvement - the couscous that comes with the duck was under-seasoned and the fingerling potatoes had the opposite problem of too much salt. Seated at 7:00pm, appetizers came out about 25 minutes in. Then we sat around for another 25 minutes until our steaks came out. Their steaks are cut so thick. Didn't realise it was gonna be 30 plus minutes to make a steak medium. The steak was just ok. Would rather have gone to double a in eureka. But I had kids with me and a friend visiting. Referred by the bartender at Salt this past Saturday on your way home for business in the area, we were confronted with a hostess at Campgound who rolled her eyes when at 5 pm which is opening time, we announced we had no reservation. Great to find this terrific local restaurant as we were driving down the coast. impeccable is really the only way to describe our experience here. Good options for our children and a great selection for the adults, road weary from the fast food of the road. Stopped in here randomly while visiting my daughter at Cal Poly Hunboldt because it looked like it had a cool vibe and ended up having one of the best meals I've ever had in my entire life! All around AMAZING!! I showed up late, but they still let me keep my reservation. Started with the cheese board, 4 different cheeses which all were really good. Had the wedge salad. The blue cheese dressing was great, best blue cheese, ever!! My husband had the burger. He said it was too much flavor. I had the crispy duck breast, best duck I've ever tasted. Would not recommend the Tagliatelle pasta it was too thick chewy pasta (Tagliatelle should be wider and thinner than Fettuccine) we also had their Halibut which was delicious (the pistachio crust was a bit salty but halibut was great) Duck and was delicious. So disappointed in our meal. Well maybe it was just me because my Husband and Son will eat anything I throw at them. I ordered the scallops which were very nicely done and the sauce was nice also. But I am certain they threw frozen peas on and the asparagus was almost inedible, dry and tough. My Husband loved his lamb dish. My son loved his duck, but the creamed kale was so salty he couldn't eat it. I thought it was because he wasn't feeling the greens, I tasted them. Super salty. Overall I wont be going back. We let our server know, she said we should have said something when we were eating. Well, she didn't check on us, so I didn't flag her over. They did offer a dessert, which I declined. If this was a local taco truck or maybe a burger place, I would be fine, but they are awful proud of their food given the prices. read more

When I asked the wait staff when the food was coming she rudely said the kitchen was very busy and it would be out when it was ready. Eh. Some good, but some really not so good. My order came out incorrectly and then I was given the option to get it correctly but "or do you think it's too late now because how long it would take?" So I went with the incorrect order not wanted to wait for however long the server was indicating. The server came back maybe 1/3 of the way into our entrees to ask if we wanted desserts. She read our faces well and said, "okay, something to think about." The food wasn't bad tasting. It was hard to enjoy the evening though because of the atmosphere. It's so loud in there. Tile floors, tile/wood walls, wood seats. Everyone was yelling to be heard. The worst part is that we were by the open door and very cold with the evening air. When I asked about maybe closing it just a bit we were told that it gets hot for the cooks by the fire so they leave it open. Basically the place was not designed with the diner's experience in mind. I enjoy a special evening at a nice restaurant and don't mind paying for it. This place was not worth the money we spent. I probably won't go back. read more

Excellent brunch! A solid menu of chicken and waffles, chilaquiles and and avocado toast with pork belly and much more . I'm loving this brunch- they've got a well curated menu, and the chilaquiles--which can be hit or miss in most places- is yummy delicious with islands of avocado and chorizo and flavor that is killer. Pair it with a vodka cilantro Bloody Mary and this place will make your day. I'm a huge foodie and the Pandemic knocked Arcata for a loop, it's been a while since restaurants reinvested, hired up worthy chefs and got back to some kick ass food.
