Great tiny bar with lots of charm. Friendly people. Lemon drops were perfectly mixed, not too sweet. We happen to have dropped in on their blues night. Live band (can't remember their name!), two women playing sax, one of them was lead singer, lead and bass guitar and drummer, all were good. They seemed to have a certain following, I don't believe there were more than 5 people under the age of 60 in the crowd, but it was so entertaining! One senior couple sashayed and swayed, dancing to the rhythm holding each other tight, they were good! There was a tiny woman all dressed up in a pretty blue dress, her hair perfectly styled. She wore sparkly blue boots. She looked like a Faerie princess. So beautiful. I'm sure she is ageless but perhaps around 80 in human years. We stumbled upon this place by accident, and what a great find! Hidden in an alleyway is this cool speakeasy. The drinks were delicious, each handcrafted with care. The bartender was so cool...very friendly, and helpful. He gave us advice on drinks and things to do around town! Great ambiance, and I was even told they have live music most nights. Cute place but we truly do enjoy the "Speakeasy" experience and this was not that. The bartender was friendly and serviced patrons in a timely manner. There was also live music playing outdoors while we visited. It seems like a place enjoyed by the locals (we were there on a Thursday at 8 pm, right after sunset). Ppl were friendly and seemed to know each other. Which provided a warm atmosphere. I don't know if they offer food / bites because we were there just for cocktails! read more

I started going to this bar about 9 months ago, I became friends with Tim and most of the rest of the Opera Alley Cats, and I very much enjoyed going there every Tuesday night for the music and some drinks. Sadly the manager of the bar noticed that I go barefoot after all this time, and refused me service claiming health codes and liability, sadly both of these excuses get used way too often and are both incorrect. The first time she told me this while I was inside watching the band, so I decided fine I will not spend any more money but will go when the band is outside, then she told me I couldn't be there barefoot outside either! It's a shame, I made great friends, spent easily 50+ a week, and this is how they treat good customers with lies over their own fears of being barefoot. It's very sad that such a great chapter in my life has to come to an end over something so pedantic to a business. read more

I came here one night with a friend to grab a drink and I really enjoyed myself. The bar is rather small and they have a live jazz band playing nightly? I believe, so it can feel rather tight in there when everyone is trying to sit or stand to watch the band. I've actually try to come here once before and it was too full so I ended up going elsewhere. That's a good sign that they always have patrons though. The bar has super interesting wall decor and painting. The bathroom here is insane. It's painted from top to bottom and has won some fun awards. The vibes in here are really nice. As for drinks, they have a good menu. Many of the drinks on there caught my eye, but the blind tiger won. The drink is cucumber vodka and elderflower liqueur with muddle blueberries and lemon. The drink looked amazing when the bartender was making it. When he went to pour the drink into glasses, he strained all the muddled blueberries out. The drink tasted pretty much like cucumber with a touch of lemon. I was a little saddened by this. The drink was still ok but I wish it had some of the blueberries still in the drink or some blueberry puree added to give it a little more blueberry flavor. Next time, I will be trying the ruby slipper. Overall, fun place. I will be back. read more

For a place called the Speakeasy you think that they would make excellent craft cocktails, but they do not. When I watched the bartender pour vermouth straight into the shaker instead of coating the glass it was awful not to mention neither of the martinis we ordered were cold Both of them were extremely raw tasting and awful. A vaguely New Orleans-themed bar in Old Town Eureka, The Speakeasy is a small space that usually packs in quite a crowd to see the live shows. Part of the magic is the fact that this place is so tiny, and the music will be heard no matter what. Any band with more than two people is going to be bumping into tables, which makes the experience that much more intimate. If you like jazz and music and small venues, this is a good choice. No food to speak of, but the drinks list is pretty original and always changing. In a world of beer bars, this place keeps the NOLA vibes alive with real cocktails, and a nod towards unconventional ingredients. read more

This place is super cute! I was so excited to go. Loved the dj. But the bartender was so rude to me and all of my friends. All we did was ask what martini he recommended because we saw on the wall that they have been awarded for their martinis. He looked us up and down and told us "all of them. Tell me when you're actually ready." And completely disregarded us. Never mind that there was only one martini on the menu. Then he started yelling at us that even if our one friend didn't get a drink they still need to be carded. I don't have a problem with showing our ID's but he was literally screaming at us angrily. I can understand the stress he was under but I would probably never go again as I felt like we weren't welcomed. A smile goes a long way. The Speakeasy is a very small and intimate setting. It is almost always packed, so you might want to plan on standing! There has always been live music going on any time I've visited, which adds to this place and it's charm. Their drink menu hosts a variety of fancy cocktails, that are curated with love. All the drinks I've had there have been rather strong too, so definitely worth the price! Due to the volume of the live music, I wouldn't say that this is a good place to sit and mingle. If you're on a bar crawl and looking for some fancy drinks, this should definitely be one of your stops. On any given weekend in old town Eureka, there are lots of fun little shops within a very close vicinity to the bar, especially during Arts Alive. Despite the small size and this place being overcrowded, the bar service is always top notch and fast! read more

I've been here a handful of times with friends and each time I have been, it has been fairly crowded. The interior is unexpectedly fancy compared to the outside! The interior is also very small, so prepare to either sit at the bar or wait around for a table or booth. There are two booths to sit at and then maybe two or three tables with chairs and the bar has stools to sit at. The Speakeasy often has live music at night which really helps set the tone. One of the walls has lit candles on it- que romantico! My favorite part about this place is their star-lit ceiling. It has a very classy and unique feel to it. Prices are average for an upscale Eureka bar. About $8-$13 for a fancy cocktail. The bartenders are all friendly and attentive, and the bathroom is always clean (be sure to take a look inside- I think they won an award for most creative bathroom at one point). The Speakeasy is a chill place to sit and catch up with a friend or two. Just don't bring the whole group cause you'll likely have trouble finding comfortable seating. read more

Speakeasy came highly recommended by our concierge. I found it a quaint and unique experience but not quite what I was expecting for the name. It's well lit. And there was no secret knock, no clothespin or secret word required. The decor was average although I see they have an award on the wall for bathroom decor. Bathrooms have a mural reminiscent of New Orleans. The drinks were good. My husband had a drink with whistle pig rye ($11) and I had a glass of Pinot noir ($8). The bartender was personable. If I lived in Eureka I would actually live inside this bar. Jazz + chill atmosphere + drinks = my kinda place. This said, the bartender we had makes one hell of a watered down martini. It looked real big but it tasted practically like water. So we had one unhappy drinker in our mix but I stuck to my usual gin on the rocks and was not disappointed ($7 for Henricks on the rocks with a twist). If you're looking for a bar to kick it at one night, this would be my first (and most likely my only) stop in town. read more

Anyone who visits Eureka should come here - though you may end up not going anywhere else! My wife and I found this place by chance on a foggy night where all we could see was a green illuminated sign in a small alley. The waitress we had was really knowledgeable about the history of the town, cute, and filled us in on things as she made our drinks. It seemed like a real local type of spot as well as some neighbors dogs would wonder in to say hi from time to time and the passing vagrants outside would stop to pick up trash outside and offer to sell jokes or magic tricks for 50 cents. The Opera Alley location is cool -- just "off-the-strip" enough to make you feel hip for knowing where it is. It's a small space with limited seating; I've only once or twice been able to comfortably sit at the bar. On Arts Alive (or most weekend nights) you'll probably be standing, but the packed-like-sardines thing just adds to the vibe.
