Stiff drinks, a classy atmosphere, date-worthy mood lighting, fine service, great decor, beautifully kept restrooms. The Opera Alley location is cool -- just "off-the-strip" enough to make you feel hip for knowing where it is. It's a small space with limited seating; I've only once or twice been able to comfortably sit at the bar. On Arts Alive (or most weekend nights) you'll probably be standing, but the packed-like-sardines thing just adds to the vibe. Drinks aren't outrageously priced, yet you can go all out and get designer cocktails if you want. Lots of beer choices, too. read more

We stumbled upon this bar and it did not disappoint! Really cool New Orleans atmosphere with super tasty drinks (I had the Mojito with berries). Jackson was our bartender, and even being short a bartender, he did a fantastic job with a full house on a busy night. He was quick, calm, and continued to put out excellent drinks. Fantastic local spot to enjoy boutique cocktails in a swanky/trendy environment. I went with a few coworkers while in town for business. I ordered a sidecar which was excellent. This is the kind of bar that gives you a full pour and freshly zests citrus right in front of you. The night I went they had a live duo playing drums and keyboard. They sounded great, but they were extremely loud in the small bar with hard floors/walls/ceilings. They have cool lighting around the bar and in the ceiling and they have some candles in the faux stone wall that runs the length of the seating area. Stop by for a cultured experience. And don't miss the very interesting restrooms. They are an experience on their own. read more

One of my favorite spots In Humboldt. Tiny, dark, classy. It's set in an alley, but not scary. Great lighting inside and out. Great signature cocktails and a wall filled with anything you could dream up. Live music on weekends is always decent. Can get pretty crowded but not uncomfortable if you're used to that scene. Sometimes cocktail making can take time and the wait on a drink is longer than desired. They do a great job though and work really hard. Really appreciate the bartenders! read more

Attended a "family-friendly" New Year's Eve event hosted by The Speakeasy, and was horrified to find that all drink sales were benefiting Planned Parenthood. How diabolical to ask people to bring children to an event which was raising money for an organization that kills the unborn and mutilates youth, especially when that wasn't clear beforehand. Other than a face painter, there was nothing there for children anyway, but this was also not known to me before I arrived. If you're okay with artificial hormones wreaking havoc with our endocrine systems and environment, and with delivering human babies early and intentionally alive for unanesthetized vivisection and organ harvest, by all means, go. If, on the other hand, you have decency and sanity enough to prefer not supporting these things, avoid. I am really shocked, because there are so many great charities in the area they might have supported instead of PP and few organizations would have been half as controversial, but The Speakeasy is apparently unaware of that or doesn't care who they offend. Wouldn't recommend, won't be going back. read more

Great selection on beer and martinis. The Ruby Red Slippers is my favorite. Really cute and the front door is in Opera Ally, I felt like I was in the prohibition days trying to find a drink!! Bathrooms are really clean and there are sparkles on the walls. Bartenders are friendly and know what they are doing. My only problem is I don't think they have a happy hour =( read more

This is a perfect little spot for jazz lovers. I think my pop would love this place. Performers on the weekend equipped with a full bar. Only reason I didnt give this place a 4 is because its not my jam. Other than that, I would totally recommend this place to jazz lovers. read more

A really fine place to drink. Bring friends or don't, who cares? The musicians are talented enough to please a single listener and swanky enough to get a group dancing. Tables are personal enough for close conversation but big enough to stretch out a book for study. The space is small, and the music is often too loud to understand casual conversation, but shouting at your friends is part of a show's atmosphere. If you need to escape into the cool Humboldt night after too much jazz/beer, the Speakeasy has its own little kind-of-fenced patio that leads out to a greater alley and parking lot. My only complaint? The bartenders tend to be aloof. This may be a function of the music loudness, but there is typically very little interaction even during quiet times. read more

Again my only problem with this place is how crowded it can get on jazz music nights. But hey that's the price you play for a great place with great staff, great customers, and KILLER jazz music. An excellent/interesting environment for the random traveler, who might find themselves washed ashore in Eureka. It's hidden down a side alley and not immediately obvious...nice! I've been to the Speakeasy a few times since it first opened and the last couple times have convinced me they don't need my business. This last time, a friend and I were so snubbed by the bartender (not ever acknowledged and then passed over for a group that entered way later than we did) that we left. It used to be a cool place, but I guess I am not cool enough to drink there because no one will serve me. Go to Oberon (it has as many bar stools and the bartenders are knowledegable AND friendly) or anywhere else. read more

Was on a business trip, tried a couple bars and then found this place. Needless to say, I did not go anywhere else after coming here. The people here are all very friendly. I met one of the bartenders by the name of Thor. He was super friendly and I felt like I was a part of the local scene as he even introduced me to his local friends, which was really nice. They had live music that was super funky and upbeat. I really enjoyed this place and if I happen to visit the area again, I will be stopping by. read more

The Jazz improv band was awesome, they would receive a 5-star review. But the barmaid was a snotty brat who clearly detests the idea of patrons. It was myself and my friend's first time there. And she made what I can only assume was an intentionally foul old fashioned for me. She was so rude that we left after having one drink. If I were the owner I would fire her immediately, as she was being rude to everyone who dared step foot in the bar. I couldn't even enjoy the music I came to hear because I felt so appalled by her treatment of me and my friend. We were so unnerved we discussed her and the way we had been snubbed all the way back to McKinleyville. Talk about making a strong first impression. read more

Went to Speakeasy for a gathering of a large group of friends last night and had a great time. Even though I had wine, I was able to taste a number of the mixed drinks. I wished I had started with a martini. They were huge and served well with a fine layer of ice on crystals top. The service was good, far better than what I had read about. I asked about why the bartender had to read all the recipes and she said the owner insisted on it for consistency. We'll definitely be back. read more

The speak easy is chill. The drinks are average sized and priced too high to get proper tossed, though I have done this here.. The bartenders are helpful and friendly for the most part. The best thing this place has going for it is the decor.. I dig the castle style stone wall with the candles inside of it.. makes me feel like I am getting shitty in a monastery... My favorite part of the entire Establishment is the bathroom wall art.. By far the best bathroom wall art I have ever lain eyes upon. I especially dig the ladies room. read more

The bartender was rude and inattentive. If you're not a local, best to go elsewhere. I don't mind paying $12 bucks a drink for good service and some kind of congeniality. Unfortunately, the Speakeasy just doesn't measure up in either area. Next time I'll go back to Gabriel's, 301, or Avalon for some nice ambiance and much better service - and bartenders who don't treat my drink order as an inconvenience. read more

I'm sorry but I have to rate them one star. Came in last night and was super pumped on the bar we just discovered. Great ambiance. Good environment. Seemed like the perfect place to get drinks. We stopped in and ordered 60$ worth of drinks. A round of these drinks were shots of Tito's vodka. We took sips of the shots and knew immediately that they were not actually Tito's but a lesser vodka poured into a Tito's bottle. The craft cocktails we ordered were decent..... Nothing to rave about but were good enough to order again. The wine tasted old. We were so unsatisfied that tonight we ordered shots of Tito's at another bar in town to taste test and we are 100% sure that what they served us here was not the top shelf alcohol. I've always heard of bars putting cheap booze in expensive bottles to cut cost and I never thought it was a real thing. This place apparently does it. read more

The drinks a $1-3 more expensive than other bars in the area and the inside is very tiny; However, this is a MUST. Whether you're visiting or live here the Speakeasy is for you. The cocktails, especially the specials are amazing. Go during the holiday season and you will be rewarded with mood lighting, fresh fragrance, and an atmosphere to delight the senses. The bartenders here are friendly and true mixologist! If you're on a date, this is easily top 10 most romantic establishments in Humboldt. I caution however, this is not a good place for groups. Keep you number under 4, otherwise it's hard to be able to find a pace for you to socialize. read more

Coming up from San Francisco for the holidays we found this cozy little craft cocktail bar tucked away in downtown Eureka to be really friendly, comfortable, cozy, and casual. It has the perfect mix of dive and cocktail bar. This is the 'must do' for any future trips to Eureka. read more

Very nice, classy and friendly place to come. We were iffy on the town because it seemed old and hard to find anywhere nice and comfortable. However, we stumbled upon the Speakeasy via yelp and due to the good ratings and beautiful pictures, we had to check it out. We were delighted, the music was great and the atmosphere was very New Orleans!
