Gorgeous lounge at Tavern 1888, we arrived for happy hour, a narrow window. No reservation but scored a cute little table with soft seating. I ordered an aperol spritz on happy hour, husband had a blonde ale. Super reasonable drinks at $6 and $4 respectively. On the HH menu we chose a periogi, which was $5 and a fun snack. From the dinner menu, I ordered the very unique seaweed salad. It had seaweed three ways, fried crispy, slices and dried flakes. A completely different meal than offered anywhere else, it included crusty grilled plump shrimp and was full of umami flavor and nutty sesame oil. I would love to experience this dish again! I am so disappointed to hear they have closed permanently. I will finish my review anyway because I truly enjoyed this place, even for snackies. Our last night in Humboldt County. Bummed by the warm and humid weather from this summer's heat dome, we were expecting a rather uncomfortable dinner as most of the establishments in Eureka don't have AC. We were graciously checked-in early during opening at 5, even if our reservation was at 6. Very thankful for that as Happy Hour was 5-6. This tavern was dimly lit with candles, table lamps and the ambient afternoon sun offering illumination for our mandatory photos. I was highly impressed by the ornamentation. Classy and very tasteful. Started our dinner with $6 cocktails (Old Fashioned, Aperol Spritz and Cosmopolitan). Got all three apps from the $5 HH menu. Fresh Humboldt Oysters (two), Korean Beef and Traditional Polish Pierogies. We were already full with these starters, but we foolishly proceeded to get the main courses. I'd blame this on the hardworking Eddie, a Schlansky lookalike (google: Conan Jordan image). He had this tic of repeated "how're you guys doing so far" that made this family order entrees, which was unbecoming of us. Catch of the Day. Halibut with roasted brussel sprouts and quinoa. Pork Belly Al Pastor with crispy polenta Striploin with pomme puree and sauce du jour. I told this crew of three that we were finishing the medium grilled steak and opted for the other dishes to be boxed. Thought that was the end of this meal, but noooo. My wife couldn't resist the Flourless Chocolate Torte. F & D, Service and Ambiance. All 5 stars. I'm just exasperated that a public house like this is 6 hours away from home. read more

We stopped by on recommendation from our Airbnb. Looking at reviews we were excited about what we saw... for better or for worse, the menu seems to rotate, which meant most of the things that we were excited about (filet mignon, shrimp and grits, crab cakes, and pastalaya) were not listed. Not an issue, but something to be aware of, if you have your eye on something. Everything about the Tavern had an upscale feel from the atmosphere to the service including the pricing, so we went in with high expectations. Unfortunately, things fell short when it came to the food: the presentation was great and everything was cooked to perfection, but was off the mark on flavor making many things aggravatingly close to being great. The brussel sprouts desperately needed seasoning, the poke bowl black rice didn't stick and didn't change the flavor profile for the better (odd because the halibut and skewers did have steamed white rice), and they did not have horseradish (only sauce) for the oysters. Again, all of this was cooked extraordinarily well, but needed refinement. On the positive side, we did appreciate their happy hour drinks and "nibbles". The perogi was very good and the drinks were a good deal. To cap off dinner, I was a little surprised. Maybe this is the norm for California, but I wasn't expecting the default tip options to be 20%-30% AND applied after tax. I typically generous when it comes to tipping, but offering higher tip options and applying them after tax feels like they are trying to put a finger on the scales for tips. In any case, we didn't have a bad experience. We agreed to call it good, not great. We were just disappointed this didn't live up to expectations because there is so much potential. read more

I was so excited to try this new restaurant in the Eagle House! The owners of this place really know how to decorate and make an old town Victorian feel cozy. There is a nice lounge area in the front and a more intimate dining area in the back. We arrived early, just after they opened thinking we'd do cocktails & appetizers. We arrived excited to be there and we were met with a very unwelcoming hostess. With a completely EMPTY restaurant she told us we would be the ONLY people seated tonight without a reservation and then took a call right in front of us while we were waiting to be seated. Then after she hung up the phone, made us stand there waiting to be seated while she wrote her effing dissertation in the reservation book. So that was kind of a bummer. But we were NOT going to let her ruin our date night! We were seated and our server was awesome. Super friendly and attentive. Had great food & cocktail recommendations. We had the clam chowder to start, and it was more like a watery seafood stew with extra potatoes. Not that creamy chowder we were hoping for. We ordered 2 delicious cocktails. Then we had the poke tower and the crab cakes appetizers. YUM!! Both delicious. My only complaint was the plate the poke bowl was served on had all of this water on it. Maybe from the seaweed? It might have been better served in a bowl. When we left at around 7, the tables were about half full and so was the lounge. On a Saturday night. So I'm not sure what the hostess was talking about. Located below our room at the Inn at 2nd & C, the decor of Tavern 1888 is warm and inviting. Was a little dark to read the menu but that could have been because we just drove 7 hours to get here and my eyes were drowsy. Day two of our 16 day vacation. Ordered an Old Fashion and a Filet. This restaurant deserves more than 5 stars! I've been here twice now, first for prom and the second time tonight. When I heard they were closing I was so sad to lose this place. It made an outstanding impression the first time and I couldn't wait to go back. Tonight was just as amazing. The staff is so kind and attentive. The food is some of the best in Humboldt and I'm disappointed I didn't come more often. This place is truly a gem and a loss for our community. Exceptional! In town to visit my daughter (vegetarian) but wanted a really nice meal, great cocktails and wine, great ambiance & it had it all! They even had Saturday happy hour! We enjoyed their pirogies, oyster shooters, my daughter had Sicilian pasta (minus the meat) and ate it all. Her boyfriend loved the duck. My mom & I loved the wedge salad, then split the steak and lamb kabobs. (Neither of us loved the kabobs.) Ended with chocolate cheesecake and strawberry shortcake. The staff were also amazing. We enjoyed our dinner here so much. Our server was friendly and helpful. The bread and oil plate comes with 5 large pieces of warm focaccia bread, and my husband said, "that's too much!" I quickly replied, "no it isn't!!!" The bread was perfect. We had the mango noodle appetizer and it was very good and fresh. We also had the chapli kebab. We had never had this before and found it delicious! I am hoping to recreate it once we're home again. Our main was seared scallops and they were cooked perfectly. The food was delicious. The service was great. The price was reasonable. The menu has a nice variety of options to choose from, including "small" plates. The ambience was nice, a little dark, but not so much that you couldn't see your food or company. Sound was good. Not noisy like some places. They play a bit of music in the background, and we were able to carry on a nice conversation during dinner. They use locally sources/grown/raised ingredients, and they use recyclable products in their takeaway boxes. All in all a really free place with tasty dishes. The ambiance is stunning and the drinks are great. The prices are over inflated for the portions. The pierogies were more like potato pancakes and not in a good way. The lamb ravioli tasted more like mutton ravioli. I would suggest adding some simple tavern food to the menu, it is s a bar after all. This place is incredible!! Best modern/hip restaurant in Humboldt! Everything was delicious- the non-alcoholic cocktail, Sasspresso and the alcoholic Turkish delight coffee cocktails were amazing.. Entrees were the shrimp, cod and grits.. the best grits I've ever had! The mushroom vegan dinner was very fresh and good. For dessert, the lemon pound cake trifle was fabulous! This was a great find. We first went to Phatsy Klines (next door, will review them as well) and went to their sister location next door to have a couple of drinks. The bartender at Phatsys recommended the crab cakes and said the crab was very fresh. I personally do not care for crabcakes because they are always heavily breaded and have too much mayonnaise and that's all you can taste. I have only liked them once in Victoria BC (Nautical Nellie's). These were amazing! Super fresh considering the crab was alive less than a half hour before. I had dinner reservations else were but the next time I come back to Eureka, I will definitely return for dinner and wouldn't mind staying at the hotel either (very vintage). read more

Honestly though for us it just wasn't enough food for the price. We ordered the appetizer special which was bison short ribs. For $22 we got 2 small ribs. For dinner we orders prawns & grits for I think $25. It came with 3 large shrimp and about 1/2 cup of cooked grits. So if your looking for a place with good drinks and a vibe this is it. Probably the best meal I've had in decades! I wish I ordered two of my plates (New York strip loin with crumbled blue cheese and butter). Fantastic! Furthermore the staff is so warm and friendly and unpretentious. They made us feel welcomed and wanted. Danny, our server went out of her way to find drawing utensils for my special needs nephew. The chef came out and asked what he could specially prepare for my nephew since he's a picky eater (made me get a little choked up it was so nice). Just the best experience. This was our first time to Tavern 1888. We wanted a special restaurant to celebrate Mother's Day and our son's graduation for Cal Poly Humboldt. We did some research on Yelp and found good reviews for Tavern 1888. The restaurant is located in a rustic victorian inn. There is a charm to the restaurant with a beautiful decorated bar and dining room. The hostess were friendly and our server was gracious and friendly. There were a couple of specials that night - Surf and Turf and curry chicken soup. Pro's: - great atmosphere - friendly staff - pasta shrimp dish was wonderful - shrimp was cooked to perfection and pasta had a beautiful sauce - curry chicken soup was delightful - poke appetizer was good Con's: - the surf and turf entree was not up to par. The steak was low grade beef (not flavor filled) The shrimp was terrible - I've never tasted shrimp so poorly cooked. I wish they had cooked the shrimp the same way they did for the pasta dish. - we were expecting better quality food, quantity, and portions for the prices they were asking for. Overall - the atmosphere and staff were great but if you are expecting a great high end dinner it will be disappointing. It was a nice try but I will not revisit Tavern 1888. read more

Came in, having a rough night. Immediately Cassy was engaging and fun. I ordered a Paloma and it was excellent as Cassy made it exactly as I wanted it. She was interested in me as a person and a customer. Had the Pastalaya. Wow. Best meal I've had in Humboldt County. Full of flavor but not filling as a pasta. Met the chef. Kudos. Part of the lovely Inn at Second and C, newly renovated, lovely interior. Menu had just been revised, I had 2 appetizers and one main (took one home, lot of food). Fresh halibut ceviche, nicely presented with blood orange and avocado, but the lime overpowered any other flavors (cilantro, jalapeno). Halibut was very fresh, but I had to put some of the sauce for the bread to give it a kick. Bison ribs were very tender and tasty, but the roasted Brussel sprouts were too oily, though nicely crisped. Duck confit, lovely, tender and skin nicely crispy, great flavors. Lemon cake was dry and had no lemon flavor. Fortunately, there was some unsweetened whipped cream to moisten it. Service was fair, wines local Humbolt County. While the restaurant was in the hotel, I could not charge to my room, minor inconvenience, but I do not remember being told that at check-in. read more

What a wonderful dinner. The Pastapalya was amazing. Chef let us know that it was his Grandmother's recipe for the sauce. Creamy, silky sauce with a little kick. Yum. We arrived without a reservation but were able to get seated right away, however, had we been any later than the 6:30 time we arrived, I'm guessing we would have been turned away as the restaurant filled up with guests soon after. The ambiance was romantic. The server was absolutely delightful and gave good recommendations. The food portions were on the smaller side, but everything was high quality and tasted amazing.
