Chef Woody makes fantastic food. I worked with him and he has always made great fresh delicious dishes. I'd recommend trying their menu.

We came up to Eureka from Oakland. Tavern 1888 is attached to their sister restaurant Fatsy Clines. When we arrived the hostess said we could sit at the bar for cocktails, but they could not serve us food. There was a large party and they have a pretty small kitchen. We were fortunate that the food service opened up and we were able to eat dinner. Food: We got the bruschetta with duck confit...the blackberry hot sauce really made the dish. The duck was smoky and flavorful. Shrimp and grits....our favorite dish....shrimp was cooked perfectly and they served it with a incredible corn salsa. Got the filet mignon which was cooked to a perfect medium rare. We got the Roquefort cream sauce..100% recommend. Cocktails: I got the Irish coffee which was well done...the bartender gave me a mini french press to top off my coffee and a lovely vanilla bean whipped cream. My partner got a cocktail made with whiskey which he loved. Dessert: We got the mini creme puff tower with a sugar twill. It was adequate. The puffs seemed like they were refrigerated and a little stale. Service: our bartender was excellent and I appreciate how the hostess and the front manager took care of us. Vibe: They had dancing in the space between the restaurants. Good for date night. read more

Wow. My wife and I went to dinner here this weekend and everything was ON POINT, which is impressive considering they had only been open 8 days. The menu made for a hard decision on appetizers, entrees and desserts. The cocktails were second to none. The ambiance was high class, elegant yet relaxed. The Filet Mignon was cooked a perfect rare, the mashed potatoes were excellent (this coming from an Irishman), summer squash delicious! This restaurant is a great addition to the Eureka culinary scene and will be a cornerstone of Old Town for years to come. Tavern 1888 is my new favorite restaurant here in Humboldt. Let's start with the atmosphere. The people in charge of the design killed it. The place is stunning. I enjoy every little detail, down to the dark colors, the moody lighting, the throw pillows, and the gold accents. Once seated in this sexy atmosphere, you get hit with the cocktail menu, which is an adventure all it's own. The tavern has perfectly curated cocktails, which are just as beautiful as they are delicious. I was swooning over my "Well Hello Ginger Rogers" cocktail that presented itself to me with a large ice cube in the shape of a rosebud. In addition, a toothpick adorned with a piece of candied ginger and a piece of candied cherry was on the rim. How fun is that? The poke tower is a must, if you're into poke. Not only was it beautiful, but it was bursting with flavor. We've been lucky enough to have kitchen staff meander to our table as we finished up to ask us how we liked the food. It gave a personal touch that made the experience itself feel more intimate. I can't wait to work my way through the entire menu! It's been fun to take friends to this spot and it has the type of wow factor people seek. Our last guests we brought proclaimed they would bring their parents back when they traveled to Humboldt from out of town. My husband loves the bison short ribs, and one evening I had a 4 cheese ravioli with crab added. Two of the cheeses were burrata and Brie and when sprinkled with the juice from my lemon wedges, it provided an otherworldly amount of flavor. I wholeheartedly love this place and am grateful for the apparent love and thought that go into every recipe. I've also had the friendliest wait staff every single time. Wow! What a find. We had one meal in Eugene and hit the jackpot. Food is fresh as can be. We asked about the aïoli and the chef came out to talk with us. They make their own mayo, their own sweet chili sauce, their own pasta. We had the scallop appetizer, which was to die for. The lemon meringue tart was fabulous too. Great ambiance in a historic building. Food was very good. My wife had the pork belly and even the polenta was tasty (I'm not a polenta fan). The lamb was very good. The Pina colada mouse was dynamite! Definitely a good choice for a "fancy" meal in humboldt. read more

I was sadly very disappointed with Tavern 1888. They started out really strong but it was all downhill from there. We got a really yummy poke tuna tower for an appetizer. This reminded me of food I had eaten in the bay and in LA. This was the best thing about our dinner though. The $50 steak was mediocre at best (not a great filet and overcooked in some parts/ undercooked in others). The shrimp and grits were also pretty bad. The food seemed under seasoned and generally bland. Finally, desserts were ok, but I've had better from Local diners. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful, but That only gets you so far when the food just doesn't measure up. Our server was very friendly, but fairly inattentive. The chef was walking around all night and chatting with people - which is nice, but based on the quality of the food and how long it took to get to us, it seems like the kitchen could have really used his help!! For a $200 meal, we left feeling very disappointed. 1 star for ambiance, 1 star for the poke tuna tower. read more

SO ENJOYABLE! We went here for a light dinner of small plates and a cocktail. We were not disappointed. We had a crab cake that was just excellent, and delicious cocktails. Finished up with a wonderful dessert of rich crumbly crust and mousse filling. Everything was wonderful, and a just-right amount. As tasty as the food and drinks were, the real stars here are the setting and the service. The room channels early 20th century, with comfy chairs and couches, a few tall tables, and rich dark colors. The bar is old-school, long and wooden. If I could give this experience more stars, I would. From reservation to dessert, it was spectacular. The bathroom was spotless. This is my first try since renovation and I was so excited to walk through those doors. Everything about this establishment is fresh. With the airy updo of the main entrance and update of a gorgeous bar space. It was so perfect with wonderfully calm lighting and top of the line table service. We were blessed to be waited on by Linnea. She was pleasant and fluent in what the establishment had to offer for the evening. She sold the Rock cod and grits as a "perfect display of our restaurants use of fresh ingredients." We also chose Dungeness crab ravioli that was rich, yet not too rich to finish the plate. Dessert was a mouth watering Pot de crème, thick chocolate mousse with a spicy ending, decadent. Nice job all around Tavern 1888! We WILL be back. read more

My husband and I decided to try this new restaurant for a date night (*reservation recommended). Holy goodness this was an amazing experience. Drink selection was incredible and the house made cocktails are phenomenal. We sat at the bar while waiting for our table and the bar tenders were so attentive and fun to chat with. The kitchen is open so you can see the food being prepared and the Chef was so approachable and accommodating. We were asking how spicy the curry dish was and he brought out an array of spicy peppers he picked up at the local farmers market to choose from. At the bottom of the menu there is a long list of local business where they source all their ingredients and wow does it show in the food quality. Once seated our server was so kind and attentive. We ordered the Bison and shishito peppers to start and wow...just wow. Bursting with flavor and so tender, it's a must try. Husband got the filet and he said it was the best he's ever had at a restaurant; melt in your mouth like butter kind of steak and perfectly cooked. I got the duck and green curry and wow! I didn't want it to end. I got the Mexicali cocoa martini for desert and we savored ever drop it was so good. If you are looking for a fun date night or a true dining experience this is a MUST. I would go here a couple times a month and it was great, a few months ago I got a red hair in my food (gross) I said somthing to the head cheif who was tall and bald and he reassured me that doesnt EVER happen and then I went again and I'm eating having a great time and than I take a bite of the salmon tower and I pull out of my mouth another long hair.
