Good location. Food was hit-and-miss. Pizza and pasta were good but all the other dishes we ordered have wrong texture. Risotto's texture was like grit, overly cooked. Brussel sprouts were more like steamed not roasted. Pork chop was burnt and very very dry. Chef needs to go back to learn some basics. Service was not too good either; food was served real slow but the check was given real quick. Two of us were still eating yet the check was already placed on the table. Hard one here. We have tried again and again, and we both remember a time when this place was the bees knees in old town Eureka. But alas, they have failed us in some way or another on our last four visits. It was her birthday dinner and we ordered a lot, so here goes... Sloppy, Under and Over Cooked, some things maybe good, but nothing at all was great. three apps: Arancini - over fried to a hard crunch, a bit far for my liking.. finding difficulty in cutting it with the edge of my fork. flavor ok but way overdone. Polenta with ragu great flavor but strange watery sauce and custard-ish texture to the Polenta. in my opinion, not well thought out or tasted. Gnocchi with black truffle - under cooked, almost raw very soft, no bite. cream sauce was good but the black truffle shavings had zero flavor, I could not taste or smell the essence of truffle at all. Cesar Salad - On point and delicious actually the star of the show. which that alone is terrible. sloppy plating. Lasagne Bolognese - Not super hot or evenly heated. One half of my Lasagne was Luke warm, the cheese inside on that side still solid. Bolognese was good but not great. Carbonarra - Not traditional, small skinny pasta which was al dented, but entirely Luke warm which ruined the dish. panchetta was crispy almost too crispy, but completely lacked the deliciously creamy rich consistency of a light egg sauce that the dish requires. this was dry, awfully luke warm and dry... it should be godly, divine, gently served, with a peppery personality... we pointed it out and showed it dry and cold when asked, but the waitress soured on us after that... drinks: Negroni - was ok but not great Whiskey Sour - was served on ice after being ordered and emphasized with no ice please. we were instructed after that we should have ordered it "Up" then it would have come with no ice... Ambiance: Drunk girl cackling at the bar from before we went in till after we left. she kept going into the kitchen and talking to the staff, that was the only time the ambiance was on point. her voice was sharp, she was loud, drunk, and I could hear her after we left 40' away from the door. Whomever you are visiting back there knows better. to the waitress with the long curly hair (tara?), thank you for always giving a shit, thank you for offering to help or remedy even though you were not our waitress. you've always been a star. unfortunately we won't be back. that's $500 over 4 visits in the last 3 years. 3 yrs ago the meal was so off that when the waiter could clearly see our issues with the mains they comped the whole meal... It's just not worth it anymore. we did a whole Italian meal tonight and none of it was up to par, all of which are staples in Italian cooking... consider straying from the Italian twist on the menu if it can't be done right . training, more training, , tasting, and iron fisted supervision is what this place needs... overpromised and under delivered. We went on a Sat evening and thankfully had thought ahead and made a reservation, as those walking in had a 45 min wait. We requested a booth so our reservation was made for the Pearl Lounge, which is attached. it did seem quieter than the Five Eleven side (same entrance). cool vibe. bartender/waiter Eric was great - accommodating, totally honest about anything you asked him about the menu, great personality and always with a smile on his face. Drinks were good, filet mignon was perfectly cooked, shrimp scampi was flavorful, crème brulee was delicious and the bananas foster cake was superb. Little pricey for us, but we were treating ourselves for our 15th wedding anniversary so it was worth it. read more

Visiting family came on recommendations for a nice birthday dinner. We were seated upon arrival and ordered drinks. I chose the Scarlet Ruby - a seasonal option- and hubby ordered an old-fashioned; they were just okay. We were served a bread and butter basket--nothing remarkable with the two bread options. After many questions with our waitress, we ordered the Burrata appetizer, steelhead with lobster risotto, and Bolognese with Wagyu and garlic bread. Our selections were served promptly. The Bolognese received rave reviews, but the garlic bread was burnt. The steelhead was lukewarm and overcooked, with the edges burnt. We were not checked on once we received our food. We decided to take a chance with dessert as we were celebrating - Choose a Banana foster cake with ice cream and a flourless chocolate s'mores torte. What a mistake. The banana cake was so dense and flavorless, even worse, the torte was burnt, and you would have needed a hammer and chisel to cut into it! When we choose a night out, we almost always at least consider coming here. It is a favorite and always delivers good service and food. My personal favorite is the Filet. Tender, juicy, always cooked perfectly. However, I really enjoyed the steelhead with lobster risotto tonight! My husband always has the same thing, the Fried chicken. Crispy and delicious every time. They have good appetizers. Great burgers. I haven't had anything I didn't like. The staff is friendly and attentive. It is a little loud in some areas but not overwhelming. Located in Old Town Eureka, Five Eleven is an upscale restaurant with a casual environment and fantastic food. We had reservations for 7:30pm on a Saturday. The restaurant wasn't super full but there were a decent amount of filled tables. Service was prompt, professional, and attentive. We ordered two cocktails: a gin tarragon collins (a special) and a dirty gin martini. A small bread basket arrived to the table in short order. For food, we settled on two small plates: woodfired Brussels and polenta crostini. The crispy parmesan and caramelized onion in the Brussels were particularly good, though they could have been warmer. The polenta crostini was a real show-stopper, with delicious mushroom marsala that may have been my favorite part of the dinner. For my main, I ordered the mushroom and butter bean cassoulet. It was very good, though I will say that it didn't feel too dissimilar to something I would make for myself at home. Also a little salty for me, but in a way that was really delicious, just a little bit heart rate increasing as well. My dinner date (my mother) ordered the filet mignon because YOLO. She asked for medium rare and I would say, in my inexpert opinion, what came out was closed to medium well, maybe medium in the center. Still, she enjoyed it tremendously and had no complaints. Delicious dinner with a nice view of some very cool old buildings in an area of Eureka that has clearly seen a good deal of investment in the last few years. Before tip, it was also under $150. This place is for sure a hidden gem! We went over the holidays and were blown away by how innovative and delicious the food was. Every course was better than the last and the service was impeccable too. Finally, this restaurant is unique bc you can choose the ambiance; half of the place is a sports bar type vibe with retro booths and a wraparound bar and the other half is a romantic and intimate venue with individual tables. We chose to eat in on the quieter side and would definitely visit here again next time we're in the area! read more

We were seated quickly without a reservation (about 5:30). Our drinks were served promptly, and then basically our server disappeared for a bit. Fortunately, there was another server that kept the water glasses full, and made sure my hubby didn't need another beer. Someone else served our food, and then we did see our server again when he checked on how the food was. My hubby ordered the New York and Shrimp. It did not appear to be a New York (maybe a sirloin?). He had ordered MR, but it came out MW. He tried it as we always do and it tasted good enough to eat so he didn't send it back. It was a good flavor, just tough. We really try not to send food back, as it feels like a waste, and you don't know if what you get is going to be any better- and you end up waiting longer. If it's decent and edible, we keep it. My food was good, no complaints. I had the hamburger (no bun). It was flavorful and the bacon was amazing. We didn't get dessert or appetizers. It was a nice meal, just not one that would make us run back to Eureka to repeat. read more

Four-stars for food, Two- stars for service. Right when my husband and I walked in, we were greeted by a young woman who didn't exactly seem to be in an amazing mood. She began to take us towards the back of the restaurant when it was a beautiful day outside, we wanted to sit in the front next to the window. We asked if we could please sit in the front instead, she seemed a little bit bothered by this request? We sit down, a very nice woman with long blonde hair came around and was very good about refilling our waters, then our server came. Younger girl on the shorter side, her attitude made my husband not want to leave a tip at all! Never will I feel good leaving only 12%, but she was that bad. I don't know if something happened before we got there that put the staff on edge? But our server hardly came to our table, and when she did, she would ask us questions in a very direct way, and when we would politely thank her, zero response. We are not difficult people, we understand being a server can be hard work! That's why it sucks when we get bad service. We both got the fried chicken plates, which was pretty good, clam chowder very good, I got the cherry Bolt drink which I liked, my husband got the mango jalapeño margarita, which he said had no alcohol in it. Lol. We did think everything was very over priced, but we appreciate they are trying to clean up Eureka and give it a more upscale feel. I can deal with a rude hostess, but a rude server? Wandering around Eureka, looking for a meal that isn't the usual burgers and fish and chips. Stumbled on this place, didn't have a reservation, but they still let us in. So happy they did. The bartender took care of our table and was fabulous. She recommended some delicious cocktails with berries that were off the charts. Best cocktails I have had in a while. For our meals we got the flank steak and steelhead salmon and they were phenomenal. Best sides, cooked to perfection and delicious. I got a peach and almond cake to go which was a wonderful dessert. Arrived at Happy Hour time and informed the hostess that we did not have reservations. There were ample tables avail but she sat us in the dark ambiance side bar to the left. Tara helped us out in the bar area and got us some great food and drinks! My faves that I ate include the Soft Shell Crab Taco $6, and Green Curry Clams and Mussels $11, were so on point, just wished there was a little more rice. Wings had a nice spicy breading. My co-workers had the duck breast dinner over polenta entree and dozen oyster + taco. Both were happy! Upon leaving we noticed lots of tables were still open and they had bread to munch on. Finally got to try this place last night after hearing good reviews. Everything was delicious! We ordered a bunch of apps - raw and cooked oysters, calamari and shisito peppers, scallop and shrimp ceviche, and a bowl of clam chowder. Oysters were fresh, calamari had the perfect amount of breading and breading was light and crisp. Ceviche was fresh and light. I got the lemon brûlée cocktail and it tasted like summer. Entrees were halibut and clams and pork chop - both yummy and good portions. Didn't have room for dessert but will definitely be back to try the creme brûlée! read more

Well, it was the first night of our road trip up to Portland, and we decided to take 101 this time, so Eureka seemed like a good spot to stay. I haven't been here in more years than most yelpers have been alive, I suspect. It's a funny little town, built primarily as transit point from ships to trains. We toured around to see all the amazing Victorian architecture before coming in for dinner. It was a warm night, and they left the front door open allowing a lovely sea breeze. We were seated towards the back, which was good, because the noise level was a little lower back there. I neglected to record prices, and their online menu omits them (which really irritates me) so I'm afraid this review does not show them. Our starters: WOOD FIRED SCALLOPS: on the 1/2 shell, citrus & herb beurre blanc - 3 stars. I had debated about choosing these vs the ahi poke, and our server, who was excellent, highly recommended these. Looks like he and I have different tastes, because while the beurre blanc was well balanced and the perfect texture, the scallops were overdone. I think if they'd just seared them on top and then added the sauce they would have been better. They seemed to have cooked them in the sauce. GRILLED ROMAINE CAESAR: parmesan, croutons, white anchovy, charred tomato vinaigrette - 4.5 stars The salad was perfectly balanced and I liked the novelty of the charred tomato, though I think this probably disqualifies it as a Caesar. The boquerones were plentiful and delicious. Entrees: FISH & CHIPS: local smelt, crispy potato gaufrettes, plum tomato horseradish sauce & tartar - 4.5 stars Although this was listed as a small plate, it was just the right size for my appetite that night. I have wonderful memories of my grandma making me fried smelt, and these did not disrespect that memory, too bad Grandma never made those crispy little potato squares. I especially liked the homemade cocktail sauce BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN: sautéed greens, duchess potatoes, gravy - 4 stars I didn't actually taste the chicken, but Tim said it was well fried and juicy, but needed a little more coating and more seasoning. I did however taste the greens and they were silky, hammy, slow cooked wonders. I could have eaten a whole bowl of them! Last night was our second visit. My husband is picky about restaurants especially ones that are on the pricier side, but he loves 511. They were slightly short-staffed and told us that up front, but we didn't mind. We sat in the Pearl Lounge side where we had a comfortable view of the TV so we could watch the baseball game. It wasn't crowded or noisy in there, which we appreciated. We started with Bacon and Egg - braised pork belly with a sunny-side-up egg on top. This is the part of the pig that bacon is made from, and it is accordingly rich and fatty. So good. My husband had the carrot-ginger soup, which slightly tasted of curry and was creamy and sweet. I had the Caesar salad made from local Romaine - crisp and plentiful. I would have liked a little more Parmesan and some anchovies but other than that it was a great salad. We ordered the Bolognese fettucine and the pork chop. My husband wiped the sauce from the pasta plate with their excellent house-baked bread. I loved the grainy mustard sauce on the chop that went with the Brussels sprout-fingerling potato hash underneath. To finish we ordered a flourless chocolate torte. I would describe it as very dense and fudgy, not too sweet, and very dark and intense. They were very busy but service was good. We love this place. The service is top notch. Make reservations on busy nights. The house made bread is mouthwatering and you can't go wrong with a campfire old fashioned. The fried chicken and greens are always worth an order. They spoiled my girl with a beautiful creme brûlée on her 10th birthday. They handle food allergies with ease. So this spot Five Eleven has been through a lot of changes over the years. It was the location of the legendary Humboldt restaurant Hurricane Kate's. RIP Hurricane Kate's. After Kate's closed and Five Eleven opened the food was still interesting new American fare. This restaurant in its current iteration appears to be Italian and I wanted to like it! It was just bad. The crab agnolottis were not made fresh and did not taste like crab. Atypical shaping. The broth was redeemable but there was no way to slurp it in the unnecessarily fashion forward plate and no sauce spoon in sight..... The veal scallopini was indeed another abomination. It was over cooked, unevenly cooked, not coated evenly, and butchered carelessly. The veal was just unloved and disrespected. The rest of the dish was again a disgrace. The pasta was sad and limp. The sauce, under developed and fumed with uncooked wine. The tomatoes were not fresh and insanely acidic. The menu item sounded great but it was under executed. This is the most common problem with restaurants in Humboldt county. They over promise and under deliver but most people do not notice because the status quo is so low for moderately fine dining and the average diner has no clue what an accurate veal scallopini should taste like. Here's a little advise to management. Reduce the menu to items you can crush. Let go of unseasonal items and ones you cannot make well. Good luck. It's a pass for me for now. read more

We were in town for the weekend, and really wanted to watch the Niner game. We were told by many that the local and very popular brewery would be the place to go. We went there to a packed house, had some mediocre food, and tried to watch the game on their small screens. We finally gave up and wandered around Old Town trying to find a place that was still open at the late hour of 8:00 on a Saturday night. We saw this place and their giant tv screen and walked in. The atmosphere was chill, the host super friendly. The menu looked fantastic, but unfortunately we had wasted our dinner elsewhere. Not being hungry, but not wanting to just sit there and watch the game, we ordered the bananas foster dessert and coffee. What they brought out didn't really look like bananas foster (no actual bananas!) but it was delicious (I think a warm spice cake with caramel sauce and ice-cream.) If we're ever in the area again we'll definitely return here for dinner. read more
