Up from SF on business looking for some hearty food after a long day of work. Saw good local reviews for The Kitchen and decided to drop in, and boy are we glad we did! Everything is local, fresh, and delicious. The combo meal seems like a "light lunch" consisting of soup, salad, and a sandwich. However, don't be fooled. It's hearty enough to satisfy even the healthiest of appetites. The house salad had a strong zesty kick to it. The chowder was perfect. The sandwich was dense, moist, flavorful, and filling. And the blonde on tap was just what I needed to wash it all down. Owner/Chef Jacob does it right, and has an entertaining personality to compliment the meal. In his own words, "Jake was way too comfortable at home in his own kitchen." And that's what it feels like. Sharing a high quality home-cooked meal with family. We come up to Humboldt yearly. We are always on the lookout for new places and new businesses. We tried this place on a whim. The place is very clean and staff friendly. The menu is pretty simple. The food was mediocre at best. I tried the chicken caprese sandwich. The chicken was good...but the cheese was not melted. My wife had the Cesar salad..average. The clam chowder was good. The chef has talent. I hope they consider paninis or croissants. read more

Well, we had an interesting evening dining here for sure, LOL. I'll spare most of the details, but basically it involved the restaurant attempting to close almost an hour early. The worker (owner?) was kind enough to stay open when we called to verify (we had parked outside and the restaurant looked closed), but then proceeded to give another two guests who walked in just before us (without calling) a really hard time for just walking in (like everyone else does, right?) - I think the guy thought he was just being funny, but it doesn't take much to recognize thinly-veiled jokes. The meals are a bit odd, pairing plain bagels with popcorn as a side (no substitutions), but we couldn't find anything else open, so we just made it work; everything tasted fine though, and we enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant, particularly the music and the art for sale. NOW, for the owner...all I can say is, you should know by now what kind of business you've gotten into. It's just running a restaurant, not running the country; having to serve customers and wash dishes is all part of the process, LOL. And between the four of us (our party and theirs), we brought in probably about $60 worth of business in that last hour...so....don't close early! And leave THE BEAR antics for THE BEAR ;-) Nevertheless, The Kitchen is a unique little spot, and I hope they'll continue to evolve and thrive in Arcata...just don't close early ;-) read more

If you have not tried this place, you need to check it out ASAP! Everything is made local and fresh daily. The clam chowder is one of the best here on the north coast and the taco with mango sauce is amazing and to die for. The people here at The Kitchen know how to treat their customers and are amazing... Give me good service. You gotta try it. read more

Special at the kitchen on Friday nights is barbecued ribs and they're huge and delicious came with mashed potatoes fresh carrots and brussel sprouts. We asked Jacob what they had for dessert and he said cookies or banana blueberry cake and he could add his girlfriends caramel sauce on the top, OMG what a fantastic dessert. Price is extremely reasonable and Jacob is a total delight. Also, there was a two-man band playing like music in the background it was perfect and for a Friday night highly recommended. read more

Was walking by and saw their homemade pretzel buns in the window, they looked amazing so I stopped in to check it out. Great atmosphere and good music playing. The guys working were super friendly and the owner recommended I try the limited time tacos. I was blown away, best tacos I've had in a while. I'll be back for the bbq sandwich on the pretzel bun. So I'll say overall the experience was OK and maybe I came in with a little bit too high expectations of the food. It looked really good and fresh, especially when traveling. Finding something that's good and doesn't cost an arm and a leg is tough these days. Well ill say the best parts were the Clam Chowder it came hot and had nice chunks of clam and potatoes. The soup was also rich and creamy just everyrhing you'd expect from a well prepared Clam chowder. The Ceaser Sandwich was pretty good the Ceaser dressing they use is made in house and is really unique and delicious. In general the food itself was fresh, prepared well, and delicious. A couple weird things was the popcorn. Honestly, IDK why they have popcorn as an included side I would rather just have some salt and vinegar chips. I also felt the sandwich was a little small for the price paying 15 bucks for 2 slices of chicken lettuce and cheese on a bagel bun seemed a bit much. What knocked off 2 stars though was the creepy attendant who seemed high on the job. He kept insisting on trying to speak the most broken spanish to my wife and in general, made her very uncomfortable. My niece even noticed everytime he came by our table he was always staring at her and in general ruined the whole experience. We were ready to leave as soon as we finished our food. read more
