A simple little "food shack" across the street from target selling darn good sandwiches... it's their twist on a banh mi. I pulled up, and the lady comes out to talk to me, she asked me if I had been there before and I said I didn't. She said take a look at the menu, and I will come back to you. It turns out she was going back-and-forth between being the cashier, and taking orders. If they had a box, it wasn't working. I decided to go with the pulled pork sandwich on a baguette, I chose all of the veggies, with no cheese or avocado, which was extra price. I requested the barbecue sauce, which was the non-spicy version. The sandwich was excellent. The baguette was a very high-quality roll, the pulled pork was savory, and all of the veggies were nice and crisp. The barbecue sauce tasted like it was a vinegar based, and it had a great "Tang" to it. It provided a nice pop of acid to offset the richness of the pulled pork. I could only finish half of my sandwich, and I had the other half for dinner. The sandwich came out to $14 and change after tax, , which was reasonable for such a good sandwich. The reason I'm taking off a star, is because of the wait time. The wait time from when I pulled up till when I pulled out with my sandwich was roughly 15 minutes. That's quite a wait for a sandwich. You can order ahead online, but you still have to wait in the line to pick up your food. They do delivery, but they only do one delivery run a day at 11 AM, and so you have to get your order in on time. They shouldn't have the person running back-and-forth between being cashier, and taking orders as well. Maybe have another person taking orders. Hopefully the next time I come back, the wait won't be so long. I wish these guys would get a "brick-and-mortar." They would do very well. Thank you! read more

It appears to only be a drive thru. But, not sure. Decided to try this today and I was so happy I did so! The menu for the drive thru is clear and understandable. They list the proteins for the sandwich, give you a choice of baguette or hoagie, toppings, and spice level! Cheese and avocado are extras. We chose the pulled perk with all the veggies and super mild (got the bbq sauce on the side just in case). It was so good!! I would go back again! The person at the window was super friendly as well. I found this place on Yelp driving up the 101. I almost went to another place, but I saw great reviews for the food here. Some people said they had bad experience with the staff on reviews I saw, but I thought the guy I interacted with was pleasant & helpful. But the food! I still keep thinking about the pulled pork banh mi! The BBQ sauce and other flavors are mouth watering. It's not beautiful or gourmet - it's just damn good! Usually I go veggie, but tofu can be done horribly sometimes. I ordered both sandwiches to see - I could barely put either down!!! The tofu was firm and tasty! I would get again. It's no pulled pork - but it's solid. I will come back if I pass through town again. The smoothie (Pom-Blueberry) was delicious, too! Thanks for solid travel food. I was misled by Yelpers here. They do not serve banh mi's. The owner let us know he doesn't serve banh mi. He said because of the small space he couldn't toast the bread. I think the subs are called Asian because of the pickled vegetables. I didn't like the bbq sauce that came with our sandwich. Also he forgot to give us utensils for the tofu bowl drive through order, but luckily I had one in the car. Tofu bowl was ok - reminded me of the rice bowls I order at Jack in the Box during road trips when Asian food is hard to find. I was thinking it was going to be like the Chinese subs in SF used to get. The veggies were great but the chicken was okay and the sauce ruined it. We ordered one chicken and one tofu sub with all veges except . Honestly i feel they're bit pricey than subway. Total was $27 something without any drink. Subway 2 footlongs I got for $13. We got it spicy so spice level was good. They dont have options like in subway to add to ur sub but they've optiom for cheese. Anyways subs were ok. First: the food and drinks are delicious. Especially the pulled pork sandwich! My main complaint: they offer online ordering in which you pay online and are given a pickup time. When you arrive, the only option for pickup is joining the drive-through line - during lunch time it gets crowded and since it's not fast food it can be a *LONG* wait. Last time it took me nearly a half hour to pick up my already paid for and presumably already made food. It's frustrating! Either have a separate pick up window or discontinue online ordering. read more

The cravings for Asian food get real out here in the middle of nowhere in Eureka. I almost feel bad giving them 2 stars, but it is what it is! I definitely have experienced better. Being from Orange County where there are a TON of authentic Vietnamese sandwich places and Asian food in general, Z&J Subs does NOT deliver the same quality. The only thing they got right here is the baguette, cilantro, cucumbers, and carrots. THEY DON'T EVEN INCLUDE THE PICKLED DAIKON in their "banh mi"!! For the price of the banh mi we got here, we might as well have just gone to Subway lol. It's conveniently located across from a Target and it's a to-go place only. There is no sit down 'cause it's not a restaurant, it's literally just a little red shop in the middle of a parking lot. The girl working was friendly, so nothing is wrong w/ the service, but the sandwiches are not real banh mi. It tasted like a bbq pulled pork sandwich basically 'cause the carrots weren't even pickled. The pork was also dry and there were more veggies than meat. I am from out of town visiting Friends in Eureka. This place has the most horrible food ever and I DO NOT RECOMMEND this small restaurant. Only order drinks and not food. BBQ Beef Sub Sandwich was too sweet and too much carrots. The pork belly rice bowl is super salty. It's like eating a scoop of salt. Randomly chose this place while visiting Eureka. This is a mom and pop shop and even though it was just the two of them the service was very quick and friendly, which I regret getting the names of the two as I would like to thank them for the great customer service again. Ordered the number 3 Chicken sub and was seriously very fresh and flavorful. Also ordered and avocado melt with pork belly and it hit the right spot. Glad we decided to randomly try this spot before a 6 hr drive back home, filled us up and satisfied for the whole trip. Food was yummy! We got pork belly and another one but I don't remember! The sandwiches were HUGE, and we ended up eating the rest the next day and it was still great. The bread had the perfect amount of crunch. The veggies were slightly picked but not too much of an overpowering pickled flavor. The meat practically melted in your mouth. We also ordered a mango boba. It was creamy and refreshing and the pearls were cooked perfectly. Not undercooked and not chewy. Excellent! As others have noted, Z & J's veggie banh mi isn't quite traditional (the veggies are a bit different), but I still think it's fantastic. Some of my go-to banh mi spots in SF and Oakland often serve stale bread, and although their pickled veggies are better than Z & J's, I especially appreciate that Z & J's sandwiches are served on super fresh bread delivered daily from Beck's. I live in Eureka so visiting Z & J's is really convenient, especially after a trip to Target, but I imagine that it would be a nice alternative (and veggie friendly option) to drive thru fast food for someone who's on a road trip to the redwoods as well. read more

My new favorite restaurant in Humboldt! It's a simple drive through with a no nonsense menu that makes the BEST banh mi dat biet (Asian sandwich) you will ever have. Every option is delicious, and well worth the price. This is the best version of this sandwich I've had, and I make a point to try banh mi wherever I go. Their bread is particularly good, and the sauce will immediately make you go "Okay what's in this?!" The building just needs a new paint job and it'd have a line around the block all day. This is the first time in my life I wish I could leave a -5 review. I never leave negative reviews for a business. But then I have never been treated so disrespectfully before in my life. I am a local restaurant owner and I would never dream of treating a customer the way we were treated here today. I am beyond appalled by the rudeness and contempt from the owner himself. He then told us to come to the window. At this point I apologized for the confusion (even thou I was the one being disrespected) as he is wiping our entire order off of his little order sheet with an attitude. When we started to re-order. He again was extremely rude and very short with me. So I told him I couldn't believe the customer service I was receiving (or lack there of) . That I was a local restaurant owner and would never think about talking to a customer the way he was talking to me. As soon as that came out of my mouth he then told me I could leave and to come back another time when they weren't busy. Really? Um no, I will never be back and I can guarantee non of my friends or family will be back either. I am still in complete shock. It was so bad. I was in shock, my grand kids were upset. I took my grand kids to Ultimate Yogurt to get their Boba instead. Where we were treated like we were human and appreciated for spending our money with them. Service is quick, and you can drive through. To be clear, this place does NOT serve banh mi. It resembles a banh mi because it uses similar vegetables such as radishes, cucumbers, julienned carrots, etc. The bread is also somewhat similar to a viet baguette. However, the meats are smoked, and doused in bbq sauce. It is still nevertheless delicious. I had the pork belly sandwich, and my wife had the chicken sandwich. Both were juicy and tender. We finished all of it. The veggies offered a nice crunch that offered variety in texture and acidity that countered the fattiness of the meat. Don't sleep on the boba either. We come from Los Angeles, so we have had more than our fair share of boba. This place had delicious boba milk tea. The boba pearls were soft and squishy. The milk tea was fragrant. Probably the best that eureka has to offer. The owner is very kind, and gave us suggestions about where we could park and eat with a nice view of the bay. We'd seen this place across from the Target the last time we were in town. We planned ahead to make sure our trip coincided with the lunch hour so we could try Z&J. The subs use good fresh bread, quality vegetables marinated in great seasonings, and meat smoked on site (tofu also available). The vegetables are similar to the toppings you'd find on banh mi sandwiches: matchstick carrots, onions, cilantro. The pulled pork and beef were both flavorful and delicious, with just a little kick. I passed on the apricot-habanero sauce option--that's too hot for me. The sandwich also comes with hot Thai peppers. Those pack a punch! Cheese is also an option, but I said no. Not sure what kind of cheese they use. But the sandwiches were so delicious that they didn't need cheese. Go hungry, because the sandwiches are BIG and packed with meat. The owner served us when we drove up, and he seems to love what he does and is passionate about his products. He was friendly and chatty (it's drive-through only, but since they make your sandwich to order you have to wait a minute for your order). He said they offer catering services if you want to impress folks at your next meeting or event. I can't wait to go back for more. Prime rib Fridays sound great! read more
