I was surprised that they were not busy for the last day of restaurant week because the food and service here is always great. . Maybe some people dont know that they validate parking for 2 hours at the parking garage on Seaside by Ross. (The ramp that goes up, at Hyatt Centric Waikiki Hotel.) . Our waiter Garrett was very attentive and knowledgeable about this year and last year's Restaurant Week Menu. Also when my rib eye was undercooked he was very speedy about fixing it for me. (It was very rare when I asked for medium rare.) And when it came out again it was tender and perfectly cooked. . My favorite was the macadamia desert. But I really love their bread which we didnt receive this time, not sure why. I'm not sure what kind of bread it is but it's a deep purple sweet bread and I look forward to those little rolls every time we come here. . Basalt's is located in Dukes Lane Market and Eatery. There's several other places to eat inside this large warehouse. Basalt's is clean and modern looking. It has a large bar that I wished I could partake in but I had the kids. There's a nice seating area outside but my party sat inside. The menu was simple and the favorites were marked. I ordered the avocado toast and it was the prettiest piece of toast I have ever seen. The egg was runny and the avocado was seasoned well. It was a delicate looking dish and not heavy. It was a good snack. Oh and damn that prime rib melt was so good I would never share it with my family if they asked for a taste. That dip on the side was just perfect for the melt. read more

This is review is based on the breakfast items. Came back here to try their breakfast menu. Basalt is open for breakfast daily from 7AM - 10:30AM. We arrived there at 7:30AM. Restaurant was empty aside from one party. Not surprising since it was quite early for most people to be up. We were seated immediately, and service was welcoming and friendly as usual :) FOOD: Granola with Greek Yogurt ($9.00) - LOVED the house-made granola. I could eat this stuff by the bag. Sweet, crunchy, fresh granola. yummm. It had a strong taste of vanilla, which I particularly like.There were only some fresh fruits atop the granola...maybe some more fresh fruits would've been nice to go with the granola. I also enjoyed the thick yogurt and silky almond milk that I got to mix into the granola, making it into a parfait Smoked Beef Brisket Corned Beef Hash ($16.00) - .Kinda expensive for what you get. I really liked the seasoning of the meet and potatoes. Loved the potatoes, but around half of the chunks of meat in the dish had a lot of fat on them...I found myself trying to just bite what little meat I could get on the piece of meat/fat. The meat is tender. I just wished there wasn't so much fat. Loco Moco ($14.00) - The fried rice was good. Eggs were perfect. Gravy was tasty. But the beef patty was on the tougher/drier side. :( I want to try other items on the menu, such as their vanilla-orange brioche french toast and mochi waffles. Hubby and I stumbled on this place towards the end of our stay on the island. It was so good that we came twice, once for breakfast and the. I the evening for dinner on our last night. The service is so wonderful and warm. When we came in the evening, we got a seat outside and right in front the guy doing the music for the evening. He was so good and very cool to watch him do his set while we enjoyed our meal. Hubby and I decided to the do the sunset pee fix menu and we chose all different items so we could try everything out they had to offer on that set menu. The timing and portion of each plate was perfect. We both enjoyed every single dish that we got too. By the time dessert came, we could barely finish them! Everything right down to the coffee was so delicious. We truly enjoyed our last evening here on the island and plan to come back again and looking forward to it too. First off, Brittany made this experience the 5 stars that it deserves. This unexpected bar in the middle of a market felt like I was drinking some high-end fancy schmancy cocktails in New York. Her mixology was absolutely on point. My party of 4 all ordered different cocktails from the really great happy hour menu, and each cocktail got a 10 out of 10. We didn't order food when we first sat down at the bar, even though happy hour was only on for 12 more min. With literally 30 seconds left in happy hour, Brittany came back to ask if we wanted to quickly sneak in a food order, so we did. Highly recommend this little market bar, its cocktails and the toganashi fries. And make sure you give Brittany a good tip:) read more

The food is excellent. I would recommend especially the duck empanadas (I thought I didn't like duck until I tried these--the avocado sauce adds a nice creamy coolness) and the burger (great quality, simple hamburger where the patty shines). But the food wasn't the only reason my husband and I came back four nights out of our seven on the island. We sat at the bar each night and had the most delicious drinks and the best company in Ben, John, and Leo--our bartenders. Great conversationalists who would come to chat when they had a spare minute or four and made some delicious drinks--try the Silver Monk if you want a cool cucumber and spicy jalapeño concoction, or a whiskey sour if you want one done right (ask for it the old fashioned way). This place is fantastic - definitely the best new hidden gem of Waikiki! First, parking. You need to come up Seaside and park in the Hyatt Centric parking center. They validate for 4 hours of free parking. The restaurant is located on Kuhio Ave on Duke's Lane. You walk in and it's like a mini Eatly (NY). There's a gelato bar, coffee bar, bakery, wine store, etc. Basalt is located I the back. Everything we had was great. I especially loved the beet salad (golden beets!) Waygu steak pupu. A great place for a casual and classy birthday breakfast! Our group ordered a variety of delicious breakfast options, but the stand outs were the Charcoal pancakes and the Avocado toast. (I know what your thinking- cuz I was there too, but don't knock it till you try it!!!!) Breakfast was Bright and Gorgeous! A feast for the eyes and palette! It was a bit confusing at first but once seated everything went smoothly. I started off with a guava mimosa for my girlfriend and a pog mimosa for myself, nothing like day drinking! Looking over the menu I was focused on their specials and the pancakes stood out for me. I've never heard of charcoal pancakes before and the avocado toast sounded delicious as well. When the food finally arrived that was the most beautiful avocado toast I've ever received. The arrangement/presentation was something to admire! The flavor of the charcoal pancakes was delicious and not to sweet which was perfect for me. The avocado toast had loads of avocado and the toast was toasted nicely. My wife and I were doing a staycation in Waikiki and decided to eat at this place on a Sunday night. The reviews seemed suggest that this place was OK. However, I found out the hard way that you really shouldn't trust reviews in Waikiki. We ordered the Uni Pasta, Baby Bok Choy, Fries, and a Tomato Bisque. I chose the uni pasta because I've had it elsewhere and liked the concept. The pasta tasted OK, but nothing as good as I have tried before. However, what came later was terrible. About 6 hours later at 4am in the morning, I woke up with terrible stomach pains and severe nausea. I ended up with projectile diarrhea and vomiting for about an hour. You can imagine the anguish of clinging to the toilet at 4am in the morning while on vacation. I called the restaurant the following morning and explained my experience to the manager on staff. He said that he would inform the chef, and have the GM call to follow-up with me the next day (which was Labor Day). I waited... no call, no response. In fact there was no follow-up at all the entire week after. So, can I say with 100% certainty that it was that meal that gave me food poisoning? Probably not because we did have other meals that day. However, my wife and I shared basically all other dishes, and this was the only dish I ate solely on my own. Also, one can surmise that, because this restaurant is not a sushi restaurant, the Uni Pasta is probably a less-ordered dish, which could result in Uni stocks being kept longer than is safe (it is also an expensive ingredient that a chef would be reluctant to throw away). Also, I have no food allergies to speak of and have eaten around the world without problems. Regardless though, the response to this incident was appalling, and shows the type of ownership/management this place has. [Update 9/12/17]: After leaving my belated review, I was contacted by management, who then verified that my health was OK. They did their disclosures, etc etc. The take away is that I'm thankful that there was a rapid response. I leave it up to Yelp to decide the validity of my report. read more

The food was amazing. One of the best we had on our trip. My friend had a the pork chop and I had the shrimp risotto. Servers were nice and attentive. Price is comparable to many other restaurants in Waikiki. The only downside was the ambience. The outdoor seating is right next to a driveway (alley?) and was only separated by plants so during dinner, you hear the car, see the headlights, and smell the car exhaust. I think if they put a solid barrier in addition to the plants, that might help improve the ambience. Regardless, I would recommend this place and look forward to returning. read more

I'm glad that they're open however I wasn't flattered with the food or service. I was able to place my phone order in a very timely manner & arrived to pick it up about 10 minutes later. The person at the hostess stand greeted me & I told him I was picking up a phone order. He asked for my name, then said the hostess would be back & walked away without any further assistance. When I placed the order I asked for utensils & lots of ketchup, but when the hostess came, gave me my order & took my payment, there were no utensils or ketchup. Luckily I checked it before I left because there was nothing in there even though I had asked for it when I placed my order. Oh, and I guess ordering utensils does NOT include napkins. I ordered the basalt burger with bacon medium cooked to go. Usually when I order to go I know that my burger will probably be a little more well done since it sits in the container for awhile before I eat, however, my burger was more on the medium rare side which I absolutely hate. The bun was extremely soggy & they put a thousand island dressing in it which I didn't like at all. Needless to say, in a time like this where restaurants are hurting for business you'd think that they'd at least try to give good service. Basalt doesn't even attempt to make you feel welcome. I had to knock off one star only for the uni pasta. :( Me and my other half had quite great expectations for the uni pasta. Usually it's a cream based pasta, however the one here was not and was really oily! I'm not even sure what the sauce was for the pasta, it was peppery (which didn't complement very well with the uni), and the caviar was a bit scarce. (Won't order again). It just wasn't what we were expecting. If your thinking of a cream based uni pasta, this is DEF not it. I think about it, and still a bit disappointing. Maybe we just got one that wasn't up to par, but dishes should never have an "off" day especially for a nice restaurant like this. However....everything else was great. Everyday is happy hour from 3-6pm They also serve $2 oyster shooters which were kuwamoto - with ponzu, wasabi tobiko, shoyu and siracha. Delicious! Happy hour menu is also good. Well drinks are $7 Craft cocktails $8 (very delicious!) Craft beers are $5 They have an assortment of appetizers such as cheese plates, charcuterie, poke assortments, pork belly buns (with charcoal buns), etc for $10 and under! Last night was my second trip here and it won't be my last. They have the best Happy Hour burger I've found in Waikiki and definitely the best price. This place is one high quality food experience overall. The Toga Fries may be the best shoestring fries I've ever had especially with the sauce they use for their burger. I couldn't stop eating them until they were gone either time. Their alcohol selection is great too. Last night I tried the Happy Hour chicken wings dish and it was a large portion of three big wings. I was definitely satisfied afrer a long day of playing on and around the beack. It's a Duke's restaurant and lives up to its name. Located down a back alley behind the beach drive, it was a great accidental find when searching for the shopping booths that were once located at the International Market Place. Basalt was pretty cool. Kind of a gourmet takeout. I had the rotisserie duck, my son had barbecue chicken pizza. My duck was surprisingly good. The meat was soft and tender, not sitting on skewers all day and drying out. I've had a lot of duck that came out too salty. But this was not the case. The half duck was also surprisingly plentiful. Came to Oahu for Christmas vacation and chose to dine here with their prix fixe Christmas menu. We split the courses, and weren't disappointed with any of it! The hostess was not very present, but was kind when she showed up to seat us. Overall, I'd love to return and try their regular menus! Ate here on the last night of our stay. Fantastic food, Paige was our server and she was super nice, and it was awesome to find this hidden gem away from the craziness of the Waikiki scene. I worry it's a little too hidden to survive but the pasta, pork chop and pork loin were all 5 stars and the quinoa shrimp and hummus were both really good apps. We didn't like the chaos of Waikiki but if we ever get back I will go to Dukes marketplace and pop in to Basalt for dinner. read more
