I just got back home to Seattle from a recent and careful trip to Hawaii, and have to give a special call out to everyone at Basalt - the only thing that was better than the careful attention to protective measures for COVID was their food and care from their staff! We were excited to try this place out but I'm not sure if I would come back. The service was really odd and ended really bad, and the food was a hit or miss. We asked for a table for three but the host just ignored us and proceeds to seat us for 2. Strange but maybe she's a new host and is still learning. Our server was extremely antsy and talks so fast we felt anxious for her. Instead of a comfortable Sunday brunch, I felt stressed when ordering with her which I've never gotten from a server. It's just taking the order of our food, not taking the SAT exams. But again maybe she's new too and is nervous/still going through training? I got the pork belly fried rice and we also got the charcoal pancakes to share. The pancakes were BOMB. Not overly sweet and not super dense. The sauce is a perfect balance of sweet and tart. All the berries on top were fresh and yummy. Not sure what the charcoal aspect does for the taste since they just tasted pancakes to us but the color is definitely aesthetically very cool. The fried rice was good but nothing special. The toast and the jam they came with however was amazing! Probably some of the best jam I've ever had. I was surprised that pork belly was hard/over cooked and there was a lot more rice than meat ratio because every review raved about this dish. After we got our food, it was almost as if our server just got off work and went home. No one ever came back to see how our food was or if we needed anything else. We finished eating and just sat there. Finally about 20mins AFTER we finished eating, we started to look around to see if anyone will ever come to clear or table or at least give us our check. Nope. We tried to flag down a few people but they just ignored us. 5 more mins later we were finally able to flag a server down. We asked for our check from him and he told us he would have to get our no where to be seen server. When our server finally came to our table, she acted like everything was fine and not even an apology to just leave us at our table for longer than it took us to eat our meal! Ok here it is...this place is dangerous! Do not attempt to come here with a full stomach like I did. Seriously come with an empty stomach and open mind. First off you get some breads in a basket oh yummy with a tasty butter to put on, water is quickly filled even with the carafe on the table. Since I already just eaten lunch two hours ago, I still decided to order the adobo chicken wings with crackers. Holy moly it was a really large portion...seriously like half the chicken! I had to take half home. My hubby got the Basalt burger and he totally inhaled it! Said it was juicy and cooked just perfectly. My brother got a salad but he noticed it was a bit over charred. Still ate most of it. But oh boy our fave was the hawaiian flatbread omg it was perfect pig meets pineapple. Crispy but yet chewy yum yum. As if I wasn't already in a food coma, we tried the upside down pineapple chocolate cake, it was to die for...yes I'm really in a coma now, don't wake me! Amazing service and great food. The empanadas are very flavorful. You don't really get the duck taste but still delicious. Beer battered taco was also a great appetizer. The miso cod was cooked perfectly and the mushrooms to die for even the bok Choi in the dish was cooked to perfection. Flavor wise I wasn't a fan even though I love miso but I still would give the dish a high rating based on the execution. What a great find! We have been struggling to find a nice restaurant that doesn't serve the usual tacos and hamburgers. Give their Cool Burn a try... it's a cucumber gin cooler with a little spritz of jalapeno. After a quick look at their menu, there is so much I want to try here. I ordered their crab cakes, nice and moist and the yuzu butter was amazing; their yellow and red beet salad with a super soft goat cheese, arugala, and fried shallots, and a poke trio. Their modern ahi, spicy kanpachi, and yellow tail. Each poke was served with a made to order rice crisp and I have to say the poke was pretty good. Much better than a newly established poke restaurant at a hotel down the street by a well known local chef. The fish was fresh and none of the sauces were over powering. Cocktails review only. Located inside a food court/supermarket area. This place looks really modern. The kitchen is all exposed so you can see the cooks doing their thing. This is probably one of the better premium cocktail spots in the area. The Guava Pisco sour & Hath no Fury (whiskey, sake, bitters, and lemon garnish) were tasty (the better being the hath no fury). Drinks are pricey though at $12-$14 a pop. I really enjoyed the cocktails here. My only gripe are the bartenders giving me the stink eye for having my daughter sit at the bar (I was holding her mind you). NOT SERVICE DOG FRIENDLY. You could just tell things were going south when we were interrogated about the purpose of the service dog (which is illegal). The pooch was in a pet stroller and we were sitting outside when we were informed that the service dog could not lay in the stroller but must be on the floor and there could be no water for the dog to drink. We ordered a cocktail and no sooner than that, the manager barged in and stated "do you have any questions" with a dirty stare which is code for get the hell out. Yes I do have a question. This place have the most awesome food, it's my 3rd time here, they have a great breakfast menu. The highlight one is the " Avocado Toast " & the Famous "Charcoal Pancakes " to die for. Their food pretty much Organic & that's what me & my families love, it's rare to find good organic food places in WAIKIKI & this place is the one for us. And also the menu is very reasonable. Just want to thank our waitress Sharon for taking care of us & helping us out on suggestions on their Lunch & Dinner Menu. Awesome service & awesome staff. I revisited Basalt and enjoyed my dinner in a quiet atmosphere. If you want to enjoy your dining with minimum noise and commotion. Go there at 5 pm. I love it there at that time. I love the set up and concept of the restaurant! The decor is spacious with a view of activities with the station that has food delivered for prep just before it is presented to diners. The bar activity and market action outside of the restaurant with people perusing through it. A great distraction while waiting for your meal. The best place to be seated is towards the back of the restaurant, right in front of the outdoor dining area. Ok, let's get to the run down on the dish I ordered (comparing it to what I ordered with their debut). LAMBCHOPS! Definitely a better grade. I appreciated my request for it to be cooked well done was not done. It was perfectly prepared, slightly pink! Tender and moist! The taste of the lamb by itself was som ewhat bland. BUT! The seasoning of the pureed eggplant (not literally, there was some texture), sauteed onions and asparagus with a delectable seasoning (hmmm..was there a hint of balsamic.) Put it all together with a slice of the lamb in a forkful bite, Yes! AND! Pair it with the delicious slightly sticky and garlicky rice. What I also observed, besides the quality results of their dish, is the attention to service. I observed and over heard the word "smile." The staff at Basalt demonstrated friendliness. I visited here a few years ago when I was in Hawaii and I went several times for lunch and breakfast and lunch and I recently returned about two weeks ago and took one of my best friends and I raved about it and it held up to everything. Bottom line. Horrible experience. Mediocre service. You're in Waikiki, go somewhere else more worth your time and money. We came around 8:40pm and they were about to do last call for food so we just ordered the corn chowder to go. The hostess said it would only take around 5 minutes. When it hit 9pm we flagged down the hostess to check on our order. As it turns out, our order was sitting on the counter the whole time we were waiting. The bag felt light so I check on the soup. The soup would take about 5 bites to finish and that's in my opinion putting it generously. The soup maybe filled up 1/3 of the cup they put it in. The pictures are of the CORN chowder I ordered that costs $8 plus tax. Thinking it was a mistake, I asked the bartender to ask if this was right and he took it to the kitchen. Rodd, the dining manager informed us that the chef said this is the correct portion they give and the chef is the boss and there's nothing he can do. He did allow us a refund because he knew we were shocked and obviously didn't think it was worth it for the last of the corn chowder of the night. In my opinion if you want something more worth your money, go next store to the fish shop, at least they give you a whole cup of clam chowder for $6. read more

The roasted beet salad was good, but a bit pricey for the size. My partner orders the catch of the day with a side of mashed potatoes. I ordered the black cod. The fish in both entrees was quite good. The mashed potatoes were just warm and were sent back. We then made the mistake of ordering the baked apple puff pastry. Came here for dinner on a Friday night. No wait! Yay! Promptly seated and handed some menus. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, but the whole experience was very seamless and the food was tasty so I was a fan! We liked the overall adherence to the theme..you'll notice it with the bread basket. I believe the black coloring is due to charcoal. It made for a memorable meal. We ended up ordering Duck Confit to share, and then my husband ordered the Cod and I ordered the Uni Pasta. We also got 3oz wine pours. Everything came out pretty quickly and the presentation was ON POINT! It wasn't just fluff either, I felt like every ingredient in the dish served a purpose and delivered a flavor so it was pretty darn delicious. There was substantial Uni in the pasta. Although I must say, even though I prefer squid ink linguine (I think Basalt used charcoal noodles), the taste at the end of the day is pretty similar. After all the flavor you want is of the Uni. This was a very rich dish, I only ate half and packed some to eat the next day (it microwaves well!). The Cod was amazing. It was also pretty rich, and very reminiscent of Butterfish from Roy's IMO. Unbelievable! WOW! I have been traveling to Honolulu for business two times last year before Covid shut down and now two times since re-opening. All four times I have eaten at Basalt for brunch and enjoyed it. But tonight I tried their dinner...Oh my goodness, I fell in love with the Miso Black Cod!!! I always try this style of fish wherever I go and it is truly the best I've ever had!! Melt in your mouth tasty! I also enjoyed the mixed green salad with the coconut balsamic vinaigrette, which is some of the best dressing I've ever had! Lastly, their coconut cake was light and fluffy and absolutely scrumptious!! to go along with it I chose a chamomile tea and they brought it in a French press! Very flavorful and classy! Truly, this was one of the best meals I've had in a long time!! I will definitely make Basalt my " go to " place for dinner every business trip from now on! I must also give kudos to the servers. They were delightful to chat with and made me feel right at home, even though I was dining alone. They were also very attentive and very professional! I've been on a mission to try as many new restaurants as I can, so last night my choice was Basalt. Five stars!!! Located in the new Duke's Lane and Eatery, Basalt is a casual and trendy eatery with both indoor and outdoor seating. Its website describes its menu as "global cuisine accented with local flavors." Compliments to the chefs at Basalt because every dish we ordered was excellent. I booked a same-day reservation with ease via the Open Table app. Parking is available at the new Hilton Centric Hotel (old Waikiki Trade Center). Entrance to the structure is on Seaside Ave. Once inside the structure, locate the elevators and take it to level one, which will bring you to Kuhio Ave. Duke's Lane is located to the right, about 50 steps away. Easy to find! Valet parking is also available at the Hilton. Once inside Duke's Lane, Basalt is located towards the back of the room. I was greeted warmly by both the hostess and the waiter. Service was good from beginning to end. Thanks to previous Yelp reviews, I knew exactly what to order. Appetizers: ***Half Dozen Kumamoto Oysters **** ($22) Served with 3 sauces: Horseradish, Cocktail, Mignonette. Yummmm. Cold and fresh!! I added the usual horseradish and cocktail sauces to my oysters. They were simply divine!! ***Charred Tako*** ($18) Served with tomato water, basil, arugula and fried shallots. My bf and I always order this whenever we see it on the menu. Presentation was beautiful. The tako was tasty and not tough. I thought this dish was good, not perfect. I would still recommend it. Entree: ***Uni With House Made Pasta*** ($28) Served with Charcoal Pasta, Cracked Black Pepper, Caviar, Lemon Zest. Black Truffle can be added for an extra $15. This dish was so pretty! Five stars for presentation. They were also kind to split this for us on two separate plates. The home made pasta was delicious and the portion of uni was generous. It was a little rich but not as heavy as I've tasted at other restaurants. This was definitely my favorite dish of the night! Sides: ***Baby Carrots and Cream of Corn*** Both went beautifully with the Entree. Sorry, I was too full to order dessert but will try the Halo Halo the next time. As a side note, I liked that we were given our own water carafe, which was perfect on a hot summer's night. I also liked the bread basket and the salted butter, which were a step better than most. And all the tableware was so nice and classy. Sometimes it's the small touches that make the biggest impressions on someone. My bf and I walked out of Basalt thinking: "Wow.
