I will never return this place. When I asked an associate to slow down because I was having difficulty keeping up with him, he yelled at me "well I'm in a hurry!" Made a small online purchase of mahogany and basswood (on sale) at what seemed to be a very competitive price. It seemed to good to pass up, so I gave it a shot. Unfortunately, the sticker price is deceptive. If you want an exact specified amount of wood, that will cost you extra. I you don't specify, exactly, the amount of wood you want. They will adjust the amount wood you ordered, at their discretion, after receiving your card info. In my case they added 25% more wood (the more expensive: mahogany) to my order. On a small order that is disappointing, but not a major issue alone. What frustrated me most was that I was not notified of the adjusted amount until after I had received the wood. Had I been notified of the order change when my order was picked, I would not be giving such a critical review and probably would of accepted the addition charges without much fuss. What really bothered me, though, were the e-mail correspondence regarding these issues. Mostly, because they were very late. Secondly, I feel they were unprofessional. I do not think a long, fictional story, regarding my shipping notification is cute. Especially, when I don't receive the shipping notification until after I received my order. When I expressed my frustration with them - they simply forwarded me the same late, unprofessional, shipping notification e-mail: Frustrating. The 2 star rating is for the wood itself. It is of fair quality and was received in a timely fashion. But, you can find the same material at a better or equal price and I'm certain it would not be hard to find better customer service from other online suppliers. I, personally will be buying from my local supplier from here on out. Though the sticker price is higher, I actually spend less when it's all said and done (mostly from shipping). Also, I can see exactly what and how much I'm getting before I actually purchase it. I won't be purchasing from WWS online again, nor can I recommend the experience to others. read more

I'm new to woodworking so I don't have a tremendous amout of other sources to compare to, but from what I experienced I was very happy. They had exactly what I was looking for. The quality of the wood was great. Very little millling on my part. And the prices were reasonable. The best part for me is the customer service. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm still a novice so all the helpful info was super appreciated. Heck, they even saved my some money by reccomending wood that was less expensive but better for my needs (cutting board). Why are most of the great places so far from home. If customer service was food, these guys would be Limburger cheese. Three times I have been here and three times I received neither a hello nor a "may I help you?" Last time there I spent about 20 minutes there looking at various things and couldn't believe they were too "busy" to acknowledge me. There is always a stocky bearded man behind the counter. I think he has a Grizzly Adams complex. I asked him three questions in a row and his answers were no more than two words each. No, I don't know, and no.When I asked if they had 6000 grit sandpaper, he looked at me like I was from outer space. I did purchase two pieces of sandpaper there once. I thought I had cash but did not so I had to pay about $4.00 on my debit card. The guy looked at me like i just ruined his day. I was not expecting nor did I receive a Thank you or "have a nice day". It was almost a snobby atmosphere, like I was in an exclusive club I didn't belong. Since they had no answers to any questions, I asked for a suggestion, he said to try another store. High prices for items available elsewhere at lower prices. Customer service comes and goes. The worst part about spending my money there is that they ask for ID on credit card purchases as low as $5.00. If I was buying a $1,000 plus tool, that might be understandable. Why establish an uncomfortable situation over small change? Next time, if there ever is, I'll also be asking the employees for their IDs. This is my 2nd experience there and neither one was pleasant. Yes they have a huge selection of wood, even though prices are real high i think. Yeah, they custom cut it for you any either way you want, though they charge quite dearly for that. But what stinks there is their attitude when you walk through the door. There is this dude behind a counter up front, he seems to be always there. He never says hello or offers any help. Just gives you the look like you are about to bother him. He will listen to you when you ask him something but so far all the replies i got were - No, do not know, do not have, not sure, look there - if we have it we have it. No, i mean seriously WTF! These guys have an incredible selection of wood and know the ins-and-outs of how to work it. Some of my high-end design and hobby projects have required very special wood details, and WWS was easily able to discuss the jobs in a professional manner. I made a mail order with Kirk. I'm having custom furniture made for myself with an exotic wood. There were complications on getting the delivery to the destination because the people making my furniture with this wood were in the back of their business and did not hear the delivery due to their machinery. Kirk went the extra mile for me by calling UPS and sorting out when they would deliver as well as calling the destination to ensure they would be there when UPS arrived. Kirk didn't have to do this, but the customer service was a relief to me and took the anxiety off such a large purchase I made. read more

I have spent my money and time at other competitors of theirs; however, I have never been treated by such knowledgeable people as those at Wood Workers Source. Their demonstrations and supplies are as good as anywhere else, but I have found the people to be very understanding when I had a problem with a piece of equipment and information on projects I have worked on. I come from an area where woodworking trade is very common, and I find even though this is desert area, we still have some very talented people. I ust bought some wood from them online- what a nightmare! About 60% of it had knots, almost 35% of it was waste, which makes it #2 Common not Select as advertised. I contacted "customer service" fat lot of good that's done. If you have any other way to get your wood - use it. read more

Woodworkers Source is an outstanding source of very fine cabinet woods at a fair price in Phoenix. They are constantly running specials which are very good deals by any measure. Unlike some earlier commenters, i have found the staff to be both friendly and knowledgeable and willing to assist. I live about 100 miles from the Black Canyon store and have called them on several occasions and asked that they select and put wood aside for me for pick up on my next trip. I have never been disappointed. Although I have used other sources in the past, I now purchase my cabinet wood exclusively from Woodworkers Source. The combination of a vast selection from which to chose and very excellent customer service can't be beat! Don't understand some of the negative comments about customer service posted in this Yelp, my experience has been the opposite. John is the manager up there and he does his level best to meet the needs of his customers. So if there is an issue, talk to John. read more

so... try to stick to the facts... new to the store I saw some 8/4 walnut with a sticker of 'redwood club price' of $18.95. Dan helped me out and is the reason they get 4 stars. He was 2x the salesman the 'cashier' was. Super nice guy. allowed me to purchase 5' when the board was barely 9' - overriding their policy of 'you must be able to put back 48"'. Also bought 3' of 5/4. I was expecting to pay 10% more than redwood club price as that's what they say the discount is on their site. Salesman rang me up at $195. I didn't bawk as meanwhile dan was cutting my wood. Chalked it up to "ok, you would probably do better in the long run NOT doing that but... it's your show". The receipt says 10.5' at $14.99 for the 8/4. Interpret this as you will. I think that is taking advantage of someone because at no point did they say there would be an up-charge for giving me less than the whole board. Heck, I could have bought the whole board for $210 and would have had I known how they were going to ring me up. So basically they charged me 35% more. $30 a bf vs $21. My advice: get your price up front. In the end: Dan should be promoted and cashier should be enlightened. read more

I ordered 12bf of alder and although it was packaged great it arrived with 5 knots in it and seeing this was for guitar bodies I will not be able to use. 9/12 - I spoke to Michael in mail orders and he is reshaping my order and having the knotty wood picked up. i Went to the Woodworkers Source on North Black Canyon Hwy in Phoenix with a sample of the type of hardwood I was looking for. I am not an expert however I thought by going to a supposed "professional" I would be okay. I was not, Not only did they sell me an overpriced stock, because I did not know what type I was looking for sold me a much softer wood that pretty much was mushed, now that I have to start all over in my search, I can at least cross this store off of my list. read more

I ordered online from Woodworkers Source. I found their staff to not be very knowledgeable about the wood they carry. I asked how a particular wood reacted to changes in temperature/humidity and I was told that hard wood does not expand or contract. Any woodworker knows that that is not true. Additionally I was sent multiple low quality boards. When I asked about it, I was told that that was all they had left in stock. If all you have left in stock is not the high quality wood that you advertise, please call me and see if I would like to wait for higher quality stock to come in. The low quality flat sawn boards (the wood was suppose to all be quarter sawn) eventually cupped and twisted. To complete my project I had to order more wood. When the new wood arrived it had multiple gouges in it. Because of my tight time schedule, I had no choice but to use the wood and to do my best to disguise the imperfections. When I contacted WWS to express my disappointment. I was given every excuse imaginable and even told that the problem was in my woodworking skills and not their product. They argued that since I was able to use the wood that it was clearly fit for its purpose. The fact wasn't that the wood was "usable," the fact was that it came damaged and was not what I paid for. A good company would have offered partial compensation or offered store credit. All they did was make excuses. read more
