The boys in the yard make this company worth doing business with. The people in the office are all stiff and impersonal stumps. I got decent enough redwood for my project. I had some 'checks', otherwise called cracks in my lumber and they gave me an allotment to cover the lumber that was damaged. If you can choke down the creepy office personnel the yard people are good folks and make doing business with this company worth the trip. read more

Stopped by for some plywood and some advice on how to complete my project. Older fellow at the counter gets up from his desk, very slowly and saunters over to me while spitting sunflower seeds out of his mouth. I asked his advice on what type of wood to use and he told me it was up to me. I asked him advice on what kind of screws to use and he told me it's up to me. Refused to give me any advice on the project. Worse than a Home Depot level experience. What happened to the days when you could go to a lumberyard and an Expert would give you Expert advice on the wood and fasteners that they sell ? Arrogant, unhelpful and spitting sunflower seeds is no way to go through life pal. If it wasn't for your guys out back and how helpful they have been over the years, I would never step foot back inside your store. This is probably why my Contractor purchased our $100,000+lumber package for our spec remodel from 84 lumber instead of Heldt, even though we only live less than a mile away. read more

It has been many years since I have gone into Heldt. My last time, the front was filled with old men who were very rude in a number of different ways-even nasty remarks about women. I said I would never good into such a backward place again. It was a throwback to the gold old boy attitudes of the 50's. Day before yesterday I needed a piece of wood that was 14" by 22". I was prepared to make another trip to Home Depot. For some reason I thought of Heldt which is just a few minutes from my home. I decided it might be time to try and be open-minded and go there. It was a better experience. The men in the back worked with me to find a quality of material that would meet my needs then cut it to my specifications. It was a positive experience all the way around. One thing to remember is this is a lumber yard, not a Home Depot. I did have to do some asking to find where I needed to go and to get help in the back. I could accept that. It went pretty quickly and the price was reasonable. read more

I'm from the east coast and I come to Heldt to just get dog food lol. Let me explain, this is the only place I could find in Arizona that allows me to purchase this food. Shipping it would cost me about $20 a bag...not paying that. So, because my dog loves the food and I love the customer service here...it's worth it. Trust me, if I wasn't happy with the service I wouldn't drive 45 minutes to get dog food I would just switch out her food. The staff doesn't talk too much but I can tell that are really nice and thorough people. This is clearly not a pet store so I appreciated the patience they had with me. When I first started ordering the food they explained the process and made sure I understood how to order and what day to order. All of that information helps a lot, I'm not wasting my time and my dog tummy is full lol!! I'm really thankful for that!! read more

This company needs new blood. The guys at the front are grouchy and very unwilling to talk things through. When you go to the back and talk with the younger shop guys now these guys are great and willing to work with you regardless of what the grouchy,crotchety old men said out front. The shop guys did exactly what I needed. Although the men up front said it "COULD NOT BE DONE!!!!" WRONG AGAIN!!! I will just go straight to the back, if I ever go back. I cannot stand bad customer service. I run a door and window shop and if any one of my employees treated a customer the way these guys up front did, they would be out the door in a heartbeat. Ordered 150 pieces of "premium select" tongue and groove 1x6, at a cost of just under $2700 including tax and delivery. About double what is was not long age. I accept supply challenges, inflation, Covid, etc. etc. We had it stained in trying to keep on a schedule, and upon inspection, approximately 25% of the wood is bowed, twisted , split , and chunks are missing. Because the wood is now stained, nothing is returnable, and there is no relief. I appreciate the fact that staining made it not returnable, but I feel like I payed for a prime steak, and received fatty choice instead. I would have been better served, and given better satisfaction after the fact at the Home Depot. If what you are selling is truly flawed, make the customers aware of that, and let them make the choice. John R read more

I must be the one of the rare ones but I had a great experience at Heldt. I went in to ask about their Penofin stains to use on an unfinished picnic bench I had just purchased. I found the fellas extremely helpful. Not only did they show me the different types of stains but they also provided instructions and tips on how to properly apply the stain. Unfortunately the bench turned out nothing like the color I chose so I am hoping I got a bad batch of stain. I plan on going back to the store and discussing it with them. After reading these reviews, I was somewhat skeptical about going there to purchase some lumber for a project. I recently moved to Phoenix from Orange County, CA where I had a terrific lumberyard within 15 minutes of my house that carried nearly everything in stock. Heldt was a serious commitment as it was a 45 minute drive each way - and an unknown commodity. However, I have been unable to find the materials I needed elsewhere, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Guess what? I have to disagree with the negative reviews. Not only were the counter sales people helpful, they were polite, friendly, and tolerant of my having to recalculate the material needs due to my having to modify my plan due to the exact products not being available. They also allowed me to roam the yard to look over their stock. Out there, one of the yard staff came over to assist. He was pleasant, knowledgeable about the stock, and offered suggestions as well. Upon completing my purchase, I needed the sheet goods ripped in order to fit them in my vehicle. Not a problem. A member of the yard staff carefully measured the plywood so I had the proper width and then cut it on their panel saw - saving me having to rip them at home. He helped me load my vehicle and I was off. So... in conclusion.... have no fear of Heldt Lumber. Nice people and a business that stocks items that you cannot find at the big box stores. Plus... the big box stores charge for ripping panels and, in my experience, they are not very careful about the cuts they make - which can cost you by having to buy additional material because one piece may end up too narrow. read more

I needed some specialty Tongue & Groove wood for a wine room ceiling and it was all special order and Depot and Lowe's. Not only did they have a bigger selection at Heldt, they also had product in stock which is good because I am an instant gratification type guy. I'm a general contractor and I purchase about 80-100k worth of Lumber per year. And I can say without a doubt that the lumber at heldt lumber company is grossly overpriced. Home Depot has better quality lumber (if you know how to pic it) that is about 40% cheaper on average . I chose heldt lumber company because I was under the impression that the wood would be of better quality, boy was I wrong. Also, if you special order a piece and you notice that it is warped or damaged once you arrive at your work site...too bad for you all sales are final on these items. I've lost a lot of money and a lot of time dealing with this company, I would strongly advise against shopping there. read more

I've only been here once. I needed some boards for my garden and I heard that the only place I could get nice cedar boards was here. The cedar boards were a special order one day order. I opted to order the redwood boards because they were somewhat cheaper. I was told these redwood boards were also a one day order. I called on Tuesday and asked to pick up the boards Friday. I went in today to pick up the boards. I paid and then I went out and the forklift guy went and got my boards for me and I inspected them. 4 out of 8 of the 12 ft. boards were warped and had damage. The forklift guy walked me over to the redwood boards that they had and there were no more 12 foot boards. I got my refund. I'm not gonna pay $21 a board for warped boards. Inspect your purchase while you are still on site. read more

I haven't used Heldt Lumber recently, but I've been a satisfied customer since 1972. They delivered the lumber and extras when I was building the addition to my home in the Coronado neighborhood in 1983-4. This was before Home Depot. Their prices were fair; the lumber was always good, and I'm just adding my two cents because I'm a writer and I just mentioned Heldt in an essay I'm doing and I Googled them for information and saw this comment page. I have used Heldt lumber for over 7 years now, they carry the lumber that is hard to locate at the big box hardware supply, located in an area where many of the homes require "specialty" lumber to recreate a correct remodel/rebuild, as far as other reviews of poor quality lumber, or too expensive. I have pulled warped, twisted, checked, fork damaged lumber from ALL building supply deliveries from every supplier I have ever worked with in last 30 years, that is the standard upgrade when having someone else pick and deliver your supplies, and if you loaded it yourself and didn't examine it closely enough...sorry. Creativity and experience is how to use undesirable wood, understand that the availability of lumber, let alone "quality" lumber is getting scarce, the lumber prices fluctuate daily and to compete against the vulture like business practices of big box stores is a challenge to any small local business. Expect that prices will be 5-10% more at boutique stores, expect that if you live in an area where humidity rates are under 15% most of the time, with mad moisture swings, this will cause a lot of unexpected results, expect that you will be working with people that will be there because they have a vested interest to make that company successful, when finding that kind of integrity is lean and far too in between in the big box stores. read more

I had received the wrong lumber for I was working on and when I called Heldt they said no problem they would replace it with the correct one tomorrow. I've used Heldt Lumber twice. One time I was building a bench (my first time doing woodwork) and one of the guys there showed me how he would design it and what tools I would need. He probably spent 20 minutes talking to me for a $15 sale. The next time was even better. I'm doing a 600 sq ft addition and my architect designed the framing and truss package all wrong. Gary (very knowledgeable and helpful) from Heldt took my plans and sent them to a gentleman named Bob to do the material take off and the truss package. Bob came out at least 2 times (once to even meet with my framer) to measure the truss package. Because my architect showed parts of the roof I didn't have...and said I had a certain type of existing roof that I didn't have, Bob designed a new mechanical plan and ordered a new beam to solve my problem. It's nice to find a small business like Heldt that takes that extra step. I honestly have no idea cost wise how they compare to Home Depot and Lowes. I do know that I had absolutely no waste (every piece of wood was in great shape and could be used), received stellar customer service (Gary and Bob both) and would use them again in a heartbeat.
